Do We Really Have The Right To Breathe Clean Air?, Rebecca Bratspies
Do We Really Have The Right To Breathe Clean Air?, Rebecca Bratspies
UC Law Journal
Setting environmental standards involves judgment calls about what level of protection is “adequate,” what technical measures are “feasible” and even what level of pollution is consistent with “clean air, clean water and a healthful environment.” On his first day in office, Trump drove a truck through those judgment calls by repealing all the executive orders related to racial justice, environmental justice, and climate change that had been guiding agency exercises of discretion. Since then, his Administration has done its best to gut environmental protections—repealing long-standing regulations and abandoning customary decision practices. Overall, the Trump Administration has created a regulatory void, …
Global Tax Decluttering, Shu-Yi Oei, Diane M. Ring
Global Tax Decluttering, Shu-Yi Oei, Diane M. Ring
UC Law Journal
Major global players—most prominently the Organisation for Economic Cooperation and Development (OECD) and European Union—have recently begun advocating that countries “declutter” their tax systems to tidy up, repeal, or eliminate pre-existing domestic anti-abuse tax rules. The reasoning is that these country-level rules are now duplicative or burdensome in light of a new global tax agreement spearheaded by the OECD and G20 and multilaterally agreed upon in 2021 by over 140 countries. Yet, this new multilateral regime is still in the process of being rolled out and is entirely untested.
In this Article, we examine this recently emergent “tax decluttering movement” …
“The State V. The State:” Feuding Prosecutors And The Battle Over Post-Conviction Concessions, Dana Bazelon
“The State V. The State:” Feuding Prosecutors And The Battle Over Post-Conviction Concessions, Dana Bazelon
UC Law Journal
One of the persistent questions of criminal law is how prosecutorial authority is allocated among different sovereign entities: Courts and scholars have wrestled time and again with questions of how criminal enforcement power should be divided between federal and state law enforcement. But the balance of power between state and local prosecutors has received far less attention, in large part because, until recently, the allocation of authority has been remarkably consistent: The overwhelming majority of state law enforcement power, by statute and by custom, has been concentrated in the hands of local prosecutors. In most states, state attorneys general have …
Transgender Rights Federalism: Protecting Gender-Affirming Care In State Courts, Julia Hunter
Transgender Rights Federalism: Protecting Gender-Affirming Care In State Courts, Julia Hunter
UC Law Journal
In United States v. Skrmetti, the Supreme Court rejected a landmark equal protection challenge to Tennessee’s ban on gender-affirming care for minors. In doing so, the Court substantially hindered or, at worst, entirely foreclosed federal equal protection challenges to gender-affirming care bans. Many Americans consider the Supreme Court the final arbiter of their constitutional rights. For decades, they would have been correct—when the Court was consistently expanding fundamental liberties, there was little incentive to look elsewhere for protection. But in eras of federal rights retrenchment, state courts have shown a willingness to step forward and interpret their constitutions independently and …
Capital Without Contribution, Saamia Aziz
Capital Without Contribution, Saamia Aziz
UC Law Journal
The United States offers immigration pathways based on economic contribution, yet this principle is applied inconsistently across employment-based (EB) visa preference categories. While the EB-1, EB-2, and EB-3 visas require immigrants to demonstrate exceptional ability, advanced education, or labor market necessity, the EB-5 investor visa grants permanent residency solely in exchange for capital. This Note argues that this inconsistency exposes a deeper flaw in U.S. immigration law: an incoherent and unequal definition of “economic value.” By treating capital as a sufficient basis for citizenship—without requiring skill, integration, or verifiable public benefit—the EB-5 program reveals how U.S. immigration policy privileges wealth …

Flicking Fibres: Microfibres Act As Sensory Disruptors In A Marine Crustacean, Ari Drummond, Alexander D.M. Wilson, Lucy M. Turner, Mark Briffa
School of Biological and Marine Sciences
Anthropogenic inputs to the environment—including microplastics and microfibres—are global stressors known to impair multiple facets of organismal biology. However, the effects of these pollutants on sensory structures remain critically understudied. Sensory systems mediate organism-environment interactions, and pollution-derived impairment at these interfaces may cascade through bioprocessing, from information acquisition to behaviour and ultimately fitness. Microfibres, in particular, pose an additional threat, potentially physically obstructing sensory organs and chemically interfering with sensory processes. Using an invertebrate model of sensory biology, Pagurus bernhardus, we tested whether dryer lint—a complex, heterogeneous mix of treated microplastic and cellulose fibres, and other anthropogenic contaminants—acts as a …

Cultural Dimensions And Ethical Perceptions Of Tax Evasion In The Digital Tax Reporting Era, Renna Magdalena, Henny Cheirine
International Conference on Business and Management Research (ICBMR)
Tax evasion is still a significant challenge for Indonesia's state revenue. This study examines how Hofstede's cultural dimension affects the ethical perception of tax evasion in Javanese MSME owners to overcome the gap in understanding of cultural factors that affect tax compliance behaviour at the individual level. In the context of a tax reporting system that has been fully digitised through e-filing and online applications, it is important to understand that the existence of technology does not necessarily remove the moral rationale for fraudulent acts. A quantitative survey was conducted on 112 MSME owners. Using validated instruments, the study used …

International Conference on Business and Management Research (ICBMR)
In an era defined by volatility, uncertainty, complexity, and ambiguity (VUCA), public sector organizations face increasing pressure to innovate. This study examines how ambidextrous leadership influences innovative work behavior (IWB) among civil servants, with psychological ownership (PO) serving as a mediator. Using a quantitative approach, data were collected from 152 structural and functional officials within Indonesia’s State Finance Organization (OKN) and analyzed using PLS-SEM. The results indicate that ambidextrous leadership has a significant direct effect on IWB. More importantly, psychological ownership mediates this relationship through two distinct pathways: promotive PO strengthens IWB by fostering confidence and proactive contribution, while preventive …

Beyond Bureaucracy: Entrepreneurial Mindset And Ai Readiness As Drivers Of Business Model Innovation In Blu Business Units — A Conceptual Framework, Ahmad Nurholis, Muhammad Rifky Adzakie
International Conference on Business and Management Research (ICBMR)
This paper advances a conceptual framework that examines how entrepreneurial mindset (EM) and AI readiness interact to shape business model innovation (BMI) and financial performance (FP) within Indonesia’s profit-oriented Public Service Agency (BLU) business units. As hybrid organizations, BLU business units must simultaneously fulfill their public service mandate while pursuing revenue generation, creating a unique context that demands stronger theoretical grounding. The framework draws on New Public Management (NPM) principles and the Dynamic Capabilities (DC) perspective to argue that an entrepreneurial mindset stimulates BMI both directly and indirectly through enhanced AI readiness. In turn, BMI is positioned as a driver …

International Conference on Business and Management Research (ICBMR)
This study examines the impact of sharia compliance on stock price crash risk, controlling for company fundamental characteristics, among firms listed on the Indonesia Stock Exchange from 2021 to 2024. Panel data was analyzed using a dynamic panel model (System GMM) and crash risk is measured using NCSKEW and DUVOL. The results show that Sharia compliance significantly reduces stock price crash risk when measured using NCSKEW, while its effect on DUVOL is insignificant. This finding is consistent with the robustness check using the two-step System GMM, suggesting that Sharia principles can be a mitigating mechanism for extreme crash risk. These …

Ride-sourcing services (i.e., ride-hailing and ridesharing)—represent one of the fastest-growing segments of the sharing economy. Although their success fundamentally depends on customer engagement, scholarly reviews have often focused more on operational and technical developments than on customer behavior, satisfaction, and loyalty. This study examines the evolution of ride-sourcing research during the COVID and post-COVID period (2020–2025) through a bibliometric and content analysis of 297 journal articles retrieved from Scopus. While earlier reviews often emphasized operational and technological aspects, this analysis focuses on customer-centered perspectives such as adoption, satisfaction, loyalty, and attitudes.
The findings show a substantial increase in research output …

ABSTRACT
Introduction: A strategic method of evaluating the economic impact of tourism across regions while taking into consideration Indonesia's geographical and socioeconomic diversity is to divide tourist destinations according to the reasons for travel. Background Problems: This study introduces an integrated statistical framework to assess the economic impact of domestic tourism in Indonesia, emphasizing regional heterogeneity and evolving travel behavior. Research Methods: A novel clustering approach is developed based on travel motivations—rather than geographical proximity—utilizing hierarchical clustering in conjunction with time series analysis and ANOVA techniques. The time series analysis identifies pronounced seasonal trends and fluctuations in spending, influenced significantly …
The Voice As A Coordinated Bodily System: Embodied Learning, Anatomy, And Vocal Pedagogy, Ge Hope Tian
The Voice As A Coordinated Bodily System: Embodied Learning, Anatomy, And Vocal Pedagogy, Ge Hope Tian
The Transdisciplinary STEAM+ Journal
This reflective article examines the limitations of control-based approaches in traditional vocal training and proposes a shift toward understanding the voice as an integrated, coordinated bodily system. Drawing on personal experience, the author highlights how common instructional language - focused on outcomes such as resonance, support, and projection - often leads singers to apply excessive effort, resulting in tension, inefficiency, and vocal strain. By distinguishing between localized control and whole-body coordination, the reflection illustrates how sustainable vocal function emerges not through muscular manipulation but through balanced, dynamic organization of breath, posture, and sound. The author traces a transformative learning process …

The Secret Science Of Songs. Created By All Children Everywhere, Paul G. Morehouse Phd
The Transdisciplinary STEAM+ Journal
This field article introduces The Secret Science of Songs, a research-informed, practice-based framework that reconceptualizes songs as powerful, transdisciplinary tools in early childhood education. Drawing on over 40 years of classroom-based action research alongside established findings in cognitive science and music perception, the framework argues that young children’s engagement with songs is rooted not primarily in performance skill, but in their innate capacity to perceive and process auditory patterns in music and language. These pattern-based experiences constitute a rich aesthetic and cognitive domain through which children construct meaning, long before mastery of melody or verbal precision emerges.
