Flicking Fibres: Microfibres Act As Sensory Disruptors In A Marine Crustacean, Ari Drummond, Alexander D.M. Wilson, Lucy M. Turner, Mark Briffa

School of Biological and Marine Sciences

Anthropogenic inputs to the environment—including microplastics and microfibres—are global stressors known to impair multiple facets of organismal biology. However, the effects of these pollutants on sensory structures remain critically understudied. Sensory systems mediate organism-environment interactions, and pollution-derived impairment at these interfaces may cascade through bioprocessing, from information acquisition to behaviour and ultimately fitness. Microfibres, in particular, pose an additional threat, potentially physically obstructing sensory organs and chemically interfering with sensory processes. Using an invertebrate model of sensory biology, Pagurus bernhardus, we tested whether dryer lint—a complex, heterogeneous mix of treated microplastic and cellulose fibres, and other anthropogenic contaminants—acts as a …

History ETDs

The early diaries and letters of Charles Francis Adams (1807-1886) reveal, contrary to previous scholarship, a passionate and sensitive young man engaged in multiple social activities with male and female friends and family, as well as enjoying licentious and respectful personal relationships with women. CFA was strategic with whom he was friendly or reserved, rooted in his hostility towards “hangers-on” and “hypocrites.” CFA also read widely both fiction and non-fiction with an affected sensitivity consistent with his desire for a literary-oriented life, the latter most reflected in his later curating his forebears’ papers. CFA’s early life experiences led CFA to …

Twenty-Four-Hour Intermittent Fasting Extends Lifespan At The Expense Of Fecundity In Daphnia, Meridith L. Smith May 2026

Twenty-Four-Hour Intermittent Fasting Extends Lifespan At The Expense Of Fecundity In Daphnia, Meridith L. Smith

Undergraduate Honors Theses

Dietary restriction (DR) is a well-established intervention for extending lifespan, yet the specific efficacy of intermittent fasting (IF) and its associated trade-offs remain under-explored in many Daphnia magna. This study investigated the effects of three IF intervals—2h, 24h, and 48h—on the longevity and fecundity of two clones of Daphnia. We hypothesized that longer fasting intervals would significantly extend lifespan at the cost of reproductive output, consistent with the disposable soma theory of resource allocation.
Our results demonstrate that 24h IF significantly increased longevity relative to ad libitum controls, even outperforming caloric restriction (CR) by reducing late-life mortality. In …
