Graduate Theses, Dissertations, and Problem Reports (ETD)
Progressive Rod-Cone Degeneration (PRCD) is a peripheral membrane protein predominantly expressed in photoreceptor outer segment (OS) disc membranes with an unknown function. Several mutations in Prcd are implicated in Retinitis pigmentosa (RP) in humans. The most common “cysteine to tyrosine” (C2Y) mutation in Prcd leads to progressive retinal atrophy in multiple dog breeds and RP in humans. Canine models harboring the C2Y mutation in Prcd show disorganized OS structure with greatly attenuated photoreceptor OS renewal rates. Recent studies show defects in the photoreceptor nascent disc flattening in the absence of Prcd. However, it is unclear how OS discs eventually …

Leds For Controlled Environment Agriculture: Leveraging Light To Optimize Crops, Tristan D. Sanders
Graduate Theses, Dissertations, and Problem Reports (ETD)
Indoor agriculture is a growing industry with many of its benefits being recognized. Light emitting diodes (LEDs) reduce production costs compared to traditional light sources. LEDs emit narrow bandwidths of light that allow growers to easily change the wavelengths plants are being grown under by using different combinations of wavelengths. Manipulating the light that plants are grown under is a method to change their physiology which is the basis of this thesis. The goal of the first two studies was to investigate how different light spectra can be used to enhance the nutrition content, growth, and morphology of kale and …

Ready Oer Not: Engaging Teachers With Student Identity Through Open Pedagogy, Emily Helton
Graduate Theses, Dissertations, and Problem Reports (ETD)
This research project centers on in-service K-12 teachers’ experiences of a continuing education course about open education resources (OER) and how to use them in ways that support students’ ability to use identity resources while engaging with disciplinary learning experiences. Using a qualitative design-based research approach, I sought to both improve the course and examine how teachers took up the ideas from the course in their planning and teaching. While OER are valuable resources for K-12 teachers in and of themselves because they are free and often available in easily adapted formats, their licensing typically allows edited versions to be …

Electronic cigarettes (Ecigs) have replaced smoking within the last decade as the preferred nicotine delivery system because of their advertising to the younger populations. Marketing has sold the idea that use of Ecigs are safer than smoking and this messaging has resonated with youth and other vulnerable populations such as pregnant women. Despite over 2.8 million children under 18 (Annual National Youth Tobacco Survey) deciding to vape, there is little information about what this will do to the next generation. Further, it is that same population that will soon reach an age when they will want to have children. There …

A Randomized Need-Supportive Intervention With U.S. Youth Hockey Coaches, Diane Benish
Graduate Theses, Dissertations, and Problem Reports (ETD)
Coach behaviors impact several essential athlete factors such as the quality of athlete motivation and psychological functioning and yet, many youth coaches remain untrained in motivation and athlete-centered principles. This study’s aim was to explore the efficacy of a need-supportive intervention on youth hockey coaches’ attitudes toward, and reported use of, need-supportive and/or need-thwarting approaches. Participants included 25 youth hockey coaches randomly assigned to an intervention or delayed control condition. Grounded in Self-Determination Theory, the intervention included four sessions within which coaches learned how to adopt need-supportive coaching strategies and reduce need-thwarting tactics. A mixed-methods approach guided the evaluation of …

My work examines the duality of living in Appalachia and cherishing its picturesque environment; while being complicit in its ongoing destruction via industry and resource extraction. Composed of my own photographs and selections from the Farm Security Administration archives, this body of work presents a vision of the region that’s purpose extends beyond value judgments. Rather, it considers the manmade and natural environments of Appalachia holistically, each one integral to the experience and understanding of the other. Following the same aesthetic choices I make in my professional practice as a photojournalist, I blur the boundary between art and documentation. In …

Graduate Theses, Dissertations, and Problem Reports (ETD)
This dissertation examines the history of the evolution of United States international education policy from 1900 to 2024, employing document analysis methodology to explore key themes that have shaped its trajectory. The study utilizes Cooper et al.'s (2004) Four-Dimensional View of Policy theory (normative, structural, constituentive, and technical) to analyze the complex interplay between diplomatic objectives, economic considerations, national security concerns, immigration, internationalization of higher education, and international students in the United States. The research traces major policy shifts from early initiatives like the Boxer Indemnity Scholarship Program to post-9/11 security measures and recent administrative changes by examining primary sources …
Evaluation Of Fungicide Sensitivity And Forms Of Resistance Of Selected Diaporthe Species In Soybean (Glycine Max L.), Bijula Mankara Sureshbabu
Evaluation Of Fungicide Sensitivity And Forms Of Resistance Of Selected Diaporthe Species In Soybean (Glycine Max L.), Bijula Mankara Sureshbabu
Plant Pathology
In U.S, Diaporthe species caused yield losses of 0.2 million metric tons in soybean in 2022. Quinone outside inhibitor fungicides carry high risk of fungicide resistance and may use for managing Diaporthe. In this study, isolates of D.aspalathi, D.caulivora and D.longicolla from 16 U.S. states were tested for their sensitivity to azoxystrobin. Significant effect of isolates (P<0.05) was observed on effective concentration at which mycelial growth was inhibited by 50% (EC50). The results showed the presence of sensitive Diaporthe isolates in soybean to azoxystrobin. Moreover, resistance to stem and seed infection by D.longicolla was evaluated in 39 soybean accessions. Significant effect of genotypes was observed on disease severity of stem and seed infection (P<0.05). Correlation between disease severity of stem and seed infection was non-significant. Results indicate defense mechanism against D.longicolla during stem and seed infection may differ. These findings indicate need to determine alternative fungicide chemistries and develop Diaporthe-resistant soybean varieties.

Light-Assisted 3d Printing Of Continuous Carbon Fiber Reinforced Thermoset Composites, Md Zahirul Islam
Mechanical Engineering and Applied Mechanics
Polymer 3D printing has become an emerging manufacturing technique, due to its design flexibility, however its application to produce structural components is still limited due to the poor mechanical strength and thermal stability of most 3D printed parts. Because of the superior mechanical strength of carbon fiber, 3D printing of continuous carbon fiber reinforced thermoset composites have recently been studied overcome this barrier of mechanical strength and thermal stability. Light- curing based 3D printing of continuous carbon fiber shows a promising potential, however this process also has limitations in making custom object due to fiber loop creation as the nozzle …

Mass Political Murder: What And Where Is The Hate?, Clark Mccauley
Psychology Faculty Research and Scholarship
This article explores the meaning and importance of hate in intergroup conflict, especially in conflict that moves to genocide or politicide. Review of controversies in defining hate leads to definition of hate as an extreme form of negative identification that includes perception of bad essence. Negative identification is inverse caring for others, as seen in studies of schadenfreude and gluckschmerz. Studies of dehumanization suggest that two forms of bad essence can be distinguished: evil human (entitativity essentializing) and infrahuman animal (natural kind essentializing). Studies also show that those who essentialize more are more ready to punish indiscriminately all …

The Ubiquity Of Time In Latent-Cause Inference, Dan-Mircea Mirea, Yeon Soon Shin, Sarah Dubrow, Yael Niv
Psychology Faculty Research and Scholarship
Humans have an outstanding ability to generalize from past experiences, which requires parsing continuously experienced events into discrete, coherent units, and relating them to similar past experiences. Time is a key element in this process; however, how temporal information is used in generalization remains unclear. Latent-cause inference provides a Bayesian framework for clustering experiences, by building a world model in which related experiences are generated by a shared cause. Here we examine how temporal information is used in latent-cause inference, using a novel task in which participants see ‘microbe’ stimuli and explicitly report the latent cause (‘strain’) they infer for each …

Mortality Index Of Drosophila Melanogaster, Following Traumatic Brain Injury, Megan N. Ashworth
Graduate Student Dissertations, Theses, Capstones, and Portfolios
Traumatic brain injuries (TBI) are associated with immediate and long-term consequences that can be divided into primary and secondary injuries. A primary injury results due to the direct damage inflicted on the brain by the hit, whereas a secondary injury takes more time to manifest due to the cascade of molecular events that lead to cellular damage and death within the brain. This study analyzes mortality as a secondary injury following traumatic brain injury in the presence of a human neurodegenerative genetic risk factor, APOE ε4. The High Impact Trauma (HIT) device developed by Katzenberger et al. (2013) was utilized …

Research has shown that automation, carpooling, and electrification combined in a mobility on demand framework have the potential for theoretically large emissions reductions. However, less research has been done regarding consumer preferences and behavioral responses to this vision of transportation of the future. In this paper we use choice experiment data collected from an online ride-hailing survey to quantify consumer preferences for these technologies. Our results suggest there are major barriers to consumers’ willing to ride in such vehicles. We find that respondents require large discounts to ride in driverless vehicles or to carpool with other passengers, even holding ride …

Objective: Feedback facilitates learning by guiding and modifying behaviors through an action-outcome contingency. As the majority of existing studies have focused on immediate presentation of feedback, the impact of delayed feedback on learning is understudied. Prior work demonstrated that learning from immediate and delayed feedback employed distinct brain regions in healthy individuals, and compared to healthy individuals, individuals with traumatic brain injury (TBI) are impaired in learning from immediate feedback. The goal of the current investigation was to assess the effects of delayed vs. immediate feedback on learning in individuals with TBI and examine brain networks associated with delayed and …

We consider the problem of jointly enhancing the network throughput, minimizing energy consumption, and improving the network coverage of mobile networks. The problem is cast as a reinforcement learning (RL) problem. The reward function accounts for the joint optimization of throughput, energy consumption, and coverage (through the number of uncovered users); our RL framework allows the network operator to assign weights to each of these cost functions based on the operator's preferences. Moreover, the state is defined by key performance indicators (KPIs) that are readily available on the network operator side. Finally, the action space for the RL agent comprises …

Psychedelic Expectancies And Post-Traumatic Stress Disorder Symptoms, Samantha Gomez
Electronic Theses & Dissertations (2024 - present)
Millions of Americans struggle with posttraumatic stress disorder (PTSD) every year. Though typical treatments work for some, patients often drop out of treatment. Given that patients are often retelling their traumatic experiences, or confronting stimuli and situations that are relevant to the experience, psychotherapy for PTSD can be psychologically demanding and intensive. These factors provide a further understanding for the high rates of PTSD treatment attrition. Psychedelic assisted psychotherapy (PAP) is a potential option to mitigate these concerns. Preliminary research on PAP has revealed effective and promising results. However, questions about PAP and their public perception remain. Furthermore, treatment expectancies, …

The COVID-19 pandemic has brought sweeping disruption and changes across healthcare systems. Examining how these changes have impacted surge capacity and capabilities is necessary to plan for future co-occurring surge-creating events in hospital Emergency Departments (EDs) and Intensive Care Units (ICUs). While there is extensive research on patient surge management, no study has looked at how the presence of a prolonged surge would impact the healthcare system’s ability to handle a concurrent acute patient surge. This study seeks to demonstrate the need for comprehensive planning for co-occurring patient surges in New York State using hospital capacity data from Health and …
