The Role Of The Symbol In The Formation Of Plot, Günay Aghamuahmmed Garayeva, Melake Agasaf Elyasova-Rajabova

Khazar Journal of Humanities and Social Sciences

Along with its own component of the plot, the symbol can be considered as one of the active components in its construction, development and illuminating (clearing). The symbol, which initially acts as an image, realizes the dynamic development of the artistic text, the process of bringing the language components together and realizing the idea. In the article, the role of the symbol, which has a multifaceted and complex function within the plot, in the construction of the literary text, in revealing thoughts and ideas, and the author’s object and purpose is considered. At the same time, image-symbol relations, the function …

The Reinvigoration Of The Organization Of Turkic States Amid Ongoing Geopolitical Unrest And Economic Uncertainty, Vusal Guliyev

Khazar Journal of Humanities and Social Sciences

The recent regional events and the geopolitical consequences of the RussoUkrainian war have had a profound impact on the dynamics among Türkiye, Azerbaijan, and the Central Asian Turkic states (Kazakhstan, Uzbekistan, and Kyrgyzstan). This shifting geopolitical landscape has been the catalyst of collaboration and integration for these countries under the Organization of Turkic States (OTS), an intergovernmental organization that aims to foster cooperation among Turkic-speaking nations. Being established in 2009, this emerging bloc has pursued a relatively low-profile policy on geopolitical issues in the past decade. However, after years of relatively little activity, things have started to change drastically due …

An Analysis On The Image Of Nato In Türkiye, Mahmut Fevzi Cengiz, Özkan Avcı, Erhan Orselli

Khazar Journal of Humanities and Social Sciences

Considering its geographical location, strategic importance, and geopolitical depth, Türkiye’s NATO membership plays a significant role in current regional and international developments. Besides, Türkiye's military and economic strength, trained human resources, geographical location, and extensive maritime and land borders represent a strategic potential to contribute to NATO's efforts in maintaining regional security and stability. Nevertheless, Türkiye’s membership in NATO is discussed by some allied countries. Türkiye's national security policies are also not always in line with other NATO member countries. This causes relations to fluctuate. The course of relations also influences Turkish public perceptions of NATO's organizational image. The primary …

Stuck At Home: Does The Virtual Office Stifle Creativity?, Andrew Heng, Roy Y. J. Chua

Research Collection Lee Kong Chian School Of Business

Remote work boosts flexibility but may stifle creativity. In her office one day last summer, Charlotte Christ, a 27-year-old marketing executive with the German office of one of the world’s leading automotive suppliers, did something she doesn’t think she could really do at home even though she often works there. At the office, she fell into a random conversation with a colleague, and together they came up with new ideas for her marketing campaign on how to offer incentives to the company’s target audiences, truck drivers.

Redefining Nationalism And Patriotism In Iran And Azerbaijan: Exploring Fathali Akhundzade's Modernist Perspective, Muharrem Bagir Jan 2024

Redefining Nationalism And Patriotism In Iran And Azerbaijan: Exploring Fathali Akhundzade's Modernist Perspective, Muharrem Bagir

Khazar Journal of Humanities and Social Sciences

Fathali Akhundzade emerged as a preeminent figure among Muslim intellectuals and modernists of the nineteenth century, whose intellectual legacy profoundly impacted societies in Azerbaijan, Iran, and Turkey. For the first time, he proposed various concepts and ideas, including Islamic Protestantism, alphabet reform and modern education, as well as nationalism, ideas that are still controversial. Among his ideas, those regarding religion and patriotism have been more controversial than others, so that many scholars have offered conflicting interpretations of his ideas. For example, many in Iran consider him the founder of Persian nationalism, while others primarily in Azerbaijan and Turkey portray him …

Audiovisual Translation: A Case Study Of What We Wanted, Evren Barut, M.Cem Odacıoğlu, Fadimə Çoban

Khazar Journal of Humanities and Social Sciences

This study examines the English and Turkish subtitles of the German Netflix film Was Wir Wollten based on its dubbed version. In the film, main characters Alice and Niklas speak Standard High German (Hochdeutsch), while Christl communicates in South Tyrolean German, a distinct dialect, with her husband Romed and their children. To highlight cultural contrasts between the families, Saran Digital Studios, responsible for the Turkish subtitles and dubbing, made a notable localization decision: they replaced South Tyrolean German with Aegean Turkish in the dubbed version. According to interviews with Saran Digital Studios and Netflix officials, various Turkish dialects, including the …

Linguistic Quips As The Soul Of Satire In Abu’S Subversive Political Cartoons, Neha Khurana Jan 2024

Linguistic Quips As The Soul Of Satire In Abu’S Subversive Political Cartoons, Neha Khurana

Khazar Journal of Humanities and Social Sciences

The effectiveness of satirical political cartoons, especially in times of strict censorship, may be explained through their use of linguistic quips that complement the brevity and immediacy of the visual medium well. Several techniques within linguistic quips may be understood through the theories of Henri Bergson and Arthur Koestler that are drawn upon in this paper. However, it is through an analysis of the subjects and objects of these linguistic quips that we understand the subversive nature of the laughter produced through these quips. Linguistic quips, in addition to providing at least a minor, though inconsistent, protection from censorious authorities …

Contested Landscapes: The Origins And Consequences Of Rhode Island’S Land-Grant Institutions (1862-1892), Jenny Sullivan Jan 2024

Contested Landscapes: The Origins And Consequences Of Rhode Island’S Land-Grant Institutions (1862-1892), Jenny Sullivan

Open Access Master's Theses

The Morrill Act of 1862 granted states thousands of acres of federal land, or land scrip for those states that did not have sufficient available public land, for the development of higher education institutions throughout the United States. Rhode Island was granted 120,000 acres of scrip to be located, sold, and then invested in stocks to create an endowment. The mismanagement of this allocation caused Rhode Island to earn the lowest cents/acre payout from the scrip lands. Land dispossession occurred on many levels, over many years, and the scars of these historic policies are still seen and felt today. However, …

Characterization And Dynamics Of Beach-Upland Transition: Insights From Southwestern Rhode Island, U.S.A, Bess Points Jan 2024

Characterization And Dynamics Of Beach-Upland Transition: Insights From Southwestern Rhode Island, U.S.A, Bess Points

Open Access Master's Theses

Ocean coastlines, including barrier systems, are important environmentally and economically, providing valuable habitat as well as key infrastructure for communities and coastal resilience. Oceanfront relief, including foredunes, varies along coastlines and serves as the first barrier to ocean-driven wave and surge damage. Forecasted increases in storm frequency, intensity, and sea levels are anticipated to enhance coastal erosion, and as a result, the beach and upland transition areas are likely to continue to undergo changes. The land-sea transition is variable along the New England coast with a mixture of sedimentary and rocky coasts, hardened structures, and a geology that reflects its …

Nitrate Contamination In Two California Groundwater Basins: What Creates Disparities?, Catherine Protiva Jan 2024

Nitrate Contamination In Two California Groundwater Basins: What Creates Disparities?, Catherine Protiva

Scripps Senior Theses

Nitrate contamination is a major problem within California groundwater basins. A form of nitrogen, nitrates leach into groundwater aquifers from the surface where they remain for many decades. The most common source for the contaminant is agricultural sources like nitrogen fertilizer. Consequently, the problem is concentrated in regions of the state with a history of large-scale agricultural production. When water is pulled from contaminated basins and used as drinking water, the nitrates can cause serious negative health consequences, most commonly methemoglobinemia, also known as blue baby syndrome. In this thesis, I will examine what factors contribute to a region’s ability …

What's Up With White Women?: Anti-Feminist Resistance To Second-Wave Feminism And The Rise Of The Conservative Woman, Sadie N. Matz Jan 2024

What's Up With White Women?: Anti-Feminist Resistance To Second-Wave Feminism And The Rise Of The Conservative Woman, Sadie N. Matz

Scripps Senior Theses

A staggering number of White women voted for Trump in 2016. Why did this demographic, whose racial and gender identity so closely resembled that of the Democratic candidate, deny themselves descriptive representation in the Oval Office? A closer look at the political history of feminism and anti-feminism reveals that these results should not have been surprising. The sexual liberation movement of the 1960s, the fight over the Equal Rights Amendment in the 1970s, and the rise of neoliberalism in the 1980s cultivated an environment that made political conservatism attractive to White women of the 20th century, priming White women …

Diagnostic Utility Of The 23-Gene Expression Profile Test For An Atypical Intradermal Melanocytic Proliferation, Etan Marks, Anais A. Badia, Matthew S. Goldberg

GME Publications

Ancillary tests such as immunohistochemistry (IHC) and gene expression profile (GEP) testing may be needed to arrive at a definitive diagnosis for some atypical melanocytic neoplasms. A 34-year-old male with a family history of melanoma presented with a large, heterogeneous melanocytic lesion on the cheek. Histopathological review of two biopsies revealed an atypical intradermal melanocytic proliferation with spitzoid features without ulceration or regression. Scattered mitotic figures were identified. In addition to performing SOX10 IHC, PRAME and HMB45 staining highlighted weak, patchy positivity that was stronger in superficial, pleomorphic melanocytes (Ki-67, 5-7% mitotic rate). Based on these concerning but ambiguous IHC …

Collection Data: Sharing, Discovery, Inspiration, And Innovation, Angela Yon

Faculty and Staff Publications – Milner Library

In recent years, the traditional use of digital collections as surrogates for the physical has shifted to a paradigm of viewing collections as data suitable for computational use and novel research methods. The burgeoning collections as data movement is gaining momentum among galleries, libraries, archives, and museums (GLAM) worldwide. Strategic initiatives, experimentation, innovation, and inspirational learning are occurring as digital libraries and digital humanities progress and work to develop sustainable approaches for collections as data programs. What is the position of collections as data in an ever-changing information landscape of open access, linked data, and shared data of cultural heritage …

Librarians Discuss Textbook Affordability As An Equity Issue, Robert L. Butterfield, Christa Perez Bailey, Kendra Lake, Adriana Poo, Mitchell Scott, Allia Service, Rachel E. Scott

Faculty and Staff Publications – Milner Library

Librarians working in academic settings have taken different stances on providing access to materials assigned in courses. Although libraries have long offered course reserves, adding course-assigned materials to permanent library collections has been discouraged for a variety of reasons. A number of events and considerations—including COVID-19 campus shutdowns, growing online degree programs, increased support for student success, availability of open educational resources (OER), and new e-books licensing models that support multiple users—have made library provisioning of assigned materials, commonly referred to as textbooks, more mainstream. Despite differences in their scope, approach, and workflows, many library-led textbook affordability programs share the …

Editorial: Open Access: One Goal, Many Pathways, Rachel E. Scott, Michael Fernandez

Faculty and Staff Publications – Milner Library

How better to celebrate the one-year anniversary of Library Resources & Technical Services (LRTS) becoming fully open access than an issue chock-full of insights, experiences, practices, and data on open access in library settings? The work published in this issue aligns with several of the obstacles we encountered in making LRTS open and available to all. Namely, despite two decades of growth, open access publishing remains fraught with misconceptions, unrealized benefits, and logistical challenges. In library settings, open access poses opportunity and uncertainty in equal measure and brings to light competing demands for resources. The complexities and expenses …

Performing A Comeback: Assessing The Biography Of Alma Mahler Via Youtube Performances, Rachel E. Scott Jan 2024

Performing A Comeback: Assessing The Biography Of Alma Mahler Via Youtube Performances, Rachel E. Scott

Faculty and Staff Publications – Milner Library

The life and work of many nineteenth-century women composers cannot be satisfactorily studied or understood due to a lack of documentary evidence. In the case of Alma Mahler, however, it is not a lack of manuscript materials or biographical accounts that preclude the appraisal of her legacy, but rather the sheer volume and often contradictory nature of accounts. Although her early life writing emphasized the importance of music, she later downplayed her identity as a composer and emphasized her role of patron of the arts and muse to “great men.” I would argue, however, that if biography is a tool …

An earlier diagnosis of autism spectrum disorder might lead to an earlier intervention, yet knowledge and awareness of autism spectrum disorder in Latin America and Caribbean Countries are limited. A later autism spectrum disorder diagnosis has been associated with negative consequences, as it might imply later access to services. This study aims to identify factors associated with the age of autism spectrum disorder diagnosis as reported by 2520 caregivers of autistic children from six Latin America and Caribbean Countries. Results indicate that on average, caregivers were concerned about their child’s development by 22 months of age; however, the diagnosis was …

Hypermodern Affect, Political Orientation, And Conspiracy Theory Ideation In The Age Of Postmodernity, Rachel L. Anderson Jan 2024

Hypermodern Affect, Political Orientation, And Conspiracy Theory Ideation In The Age Of Postmodernity, Rachel L. Anderson

Scripps Senior Theses

Recent scholarly undertakings have aimed to demystify an increasingly salient issue that threatens to disrupt cultural, political, and social domains: conspiracy theory ideation. Underpinning injurious right-wing political coalitions, anti-vaccination campaigns, out-group derogation, and, in drastic circumstances, instances of genocide, conspiracy theory informs myriad anthropogenic movements that jeopardize pillars of democracy and scientific reasoning. Intending to reveal the psychological predictors of conspiracy ideation, the present study will examine the utility of individual perceptions of societal marginalization, feelings of loneliness, belongingness, and authoritarianism in predicting the endorsement of conspiracy theory ideology among rural populations via a cross-sectional online survey and subsequent hierarchical …

Narco Service Provisions In Tierra Caliente: La Familia Michoacana, Los Caballeros Templarios, And Los Zetas, Itzel Mendoza Jan 2024

Narco Service Provisions In Tierra Caliente: La Familia Michoacana, Los Caballeros Templarios, And Los Zetas, Itzel Mendoza

Res Publica - Journal of Undergraduate Research

This article analyzes the mutual relationship of dependency between civil society and narco cartels in Tierra Caliente, focusing on civilian experiences in Michoacan, Guerrero and el Estado de México. This paper will examine the functions of La Familia Michoacana, Los Caballeros Templarios and Los Zetas through community service provisions and cartels’ governance. Additionally, socioeconomic factors of Tierra Caliente will be examined to determine which types of communities lend themselves to cartels to provide community provisions as I argue that socioeconomic factors drive cartels’ operations and behaviors.
