Oxygen Removal From Coal Mine Methane By Vacuum Pressure Swing Adsorption, Chi Wing, Alex Tsang Jan 2024

Oxygen Removal From Coal Mine Methane By Vacuum Pressure Swing Adsorption, Chi Wing, Alex Tsang

Department of Construction, Environment and Engineering

The aim of this study was to develop a safe, efficient and environmentally friendly method for the treatment of coal mine methane (CMM) in order to achieve its efficient utilisation as an energy source while reducing the safety risks and environmental issues associated with it. Oxygen removal from a model CMM, which contained about 37 % CH4 and the balance air, was carried out by vacuum pressure swing adsorption (VPSA). Two commercial carbon molecular sieves, CMS1 and CMS2, were used as adsorbents, in which CMS1 has higher selectivities of O2/N2 and O2/CH4. To ensure the safety of the oxygen removal …

Valorisation Of Food Waste Into Bio-Based Polyurethane Rigid Foams: From Experimental Investigation To Techno-Economic Analysis, Chi Wing, Alex Tsang Jan 2024

Valorisation Of Food Waste Into Bio-Based Polyurethane Rigid Foams: From Experimental Investigation To Techno-Economic Analysis, Chi Wing, Alex Tsang

Department of Construction, Environment and Engineering

Food waste (FW) constitutes a significant portion of municipal solid waste and thus requires proper treatment. A ‘waste-to-wealth’ concept, in this case, urges the valorisation of FW to produce value-added products, given that such waste contains significant quantities of diverse nutrients. While most of these efforts have been focused on the recovery of carbohydrates, this paper introduces an FW biorefinery scheme to valorise FW lipids (FWLs) into bio-based polyols for polyurethane rigid foams (PURF). Considering economic viability, cost-effective dosages of enzymes for FW hydrolysis were first investigated. Subsequently, the obtained FWLs were converted into biobased polyols through stepwise epoxidation and …

Thermogravimetric Characteristics And Evaluation Of Products During Pyrolysis Of Camellia Oleifera Seed Residues, Chi Wing, Alex Tsang Jan 2024

Thermogravimetric Characteristics And Evaluation Of Products During Pyrolysis Of Camellia Oleifera Seed Residues, Chi Wing, Alex Tsang

Department of Construction, Environment and Engineering

To investigate the potential of Camellia oleifera seed residues (COSR) as sources of bioenergy, a systematic evaluation of pyrolysis behavior for COSR was conducted. For pyrolysis kinetics and thermodynamic analysis, Coats-Redfern (CR) model was employed based on thermos-gravimetric (TG) experiments. As heating rates increased, the TG curves and the temperature peaks of the derivative thermo-gravimetric (DTG) curves moved to a higher temperature due to a lag phenomenon. According to kinetic analyses, the activation energy (Ea) was 95.40–107.97 kJ/mol. With using the obtained Ea, thermodynamic parameters were calculated, including pre-exponential factor (A), enthalpy change (ΔH), Gibbs free energy change (ΔG), and …

Study Of Microalgae Biofixation With Bacteria Carbonic Anhydrase For Carbon Capture And Utilization, Chan Cho Yin

Department of Construction, Environment and Engineering

Climate change has been significantly affecting human activities due to the accumulation of greenhouse gases, such as carbon dioxide. Biofixation of carbon dioxide (CO2) has been investigated to reduce the atmospheric CO2 level and slow the rapid increase in the global temperature. Carbon capture and utilization (CCU) can be performed by either physio-chemical or biological methods. The latter takes place in ambient temperature and mild conditions, such that there is no need for high pressure and high energy consumption nor hazardous chemicals. Biofixation by microalgae has been utilized to capture CO2 and the microalgae biomass collected after the process can …

Potato production in East Africa is seriously impacted by the potato cyst nematode (PCN), Globodera rostochiensis, where it has been recorded in at least three countries. In Kenya, it is widespread in all major potato-growing regions, often at very high densities. Consecutive cropping of potato on the same land and a sub-tropical climate have influenced PCN biology. For example, unusually large cysts have been regularly recovered. We have analysed the biological properties of these ‘giant cysts’. The giant cysts contained more eggs than those recovered from UK fields. Egg size did not differ from UK populations and there was no …

Time And Change: A Meta-Analysis Of Temporal Decisions In Longitudinal Studies, Helen Hailin Zhao, Abbie J. Shipp, Kameron Carter, Erik Gonzalez-Mulé, Erica Xu

Management Faculty Publications

Longitudinal research has grown in popularity in the field of management and organizations. However, the literature has neglected to consider the important ways in which researchers' temporal decisions can influence observed change in longitudinal studies. Researchers must make a set of temporal decisions to capture change, such as the temporal precision of the hypothesized form of change, the selection of a sample that is expected to exhibit the change, the choice of variables to be measured repeatedly, the frequency of measurements, and the time interval between measurements. However, these decisions typically are based on "educated guesses," which makes their effects …

Role Play Or Real Play: A Quasi-Experiment In The Counseling Classroom, Elke Schmeling Jan 2024

Role Play Or Real Play: A Quasi-Experiment In The Counseling Classroom, Elke Schmeling

On The Influence Of Private Stimulus Magnitude When Reporting Private Events, Christian T. Hickman

University of the Pacific Theses and Dissertations

The nature of private events provides challenges to developing a scientific understanding of the conditions under which humans learn to describe private events. Replicating and extending procedures from Stocco et al. (2014), we further evaluated the conditions under which verbal responses come under the control of private stimuli. Given that some participants vocal responses came under the control of public stimuli in Stocco et al. (2014), we implemented more subtle public accompaniments with all participants to reduce the likelihood of public stimuli acquiring control of participant’s verbal responses. Further, we systematically manipulated the visual clarity of the presented stimuli using …

Why Would I Read When The Game Is On?: Reasons Adults Give For Reading Or Not, Emmy C. Nelson Jan 2024

Why Would I Read When The Game Is On?: Reasons Adults Give For Reading Or Not, Emmy C. Nelson

Honors Program Theses

This thesis dives into the ideas of why people read and do not read, beginning in their childhood years. Many different factors add to why people choose to read or why they choose not to read. School plays an important role as to why people choose to read because reading is not necessarily a natural process since it is different from learning how to speak. Reading has to be taught and understood fully in order to read independently, understand the material, expand ideas, and connect with the reading. Without this, individuals can become “poor” readers or have a low reader …
