Khazar Journal of Humanities and Social Sciences

The article is devoted to the study of homonyms in the poetic heritage of Mawlana Jalal al- Din Rumi from both lexical-semantic and Sufi perspectives. The main purpose of the research is not only to determine the linguistic structure of homonyms but also to reveal their esoteric and mystical layers of meaning in the light of Sufi philosophy. In his works, Rumi skillfully employed polysemous words to create poetic-aesthetic beauty while simultaneously expressing profound meanings that illuminate the spiritual world of humankind. In the course of the study, homonyms were classified according to syllabic structure, and the functions of monosyllabic, …

The Evolution Of The Demonic Figure In Turkic Literature: A Case Study Of Huseyin Javid's Iblis, Lutviyya Asgarzade Oct 2026

The Evolution Of The Demonic Figure In Turkic Literature: A Case Study Of Huseyin Javid's Iblis, Lutviyya Asgarzade

Khazar Journal of Humanities and Social Sciences

This study explores the theological and mytho-philosophical concepts of God-Demon, Angel-Demon, and Demon-Human – legendary and religious-abstract constructs deeply rooted in Eastern mythology and Islam. While primarily focusing on Huseyn Javid's drama Iblis (The Devil), the research addresses the archetype of the Devil across cultures: his creation, his origin as an angel, his rebellion against God, his expulsion from Heaven, and his subsequent cosmic mission. According to religious traditions, Iblis (Haris/Azazil/Satan) was commanded to bow before humanity but refused out of pride, leading to his condemnation to Earth, where he continuously tempts mankind toward evil. The demonic image …

The Symbolic Plane, Embedded Narrative Structure, And Simile Network In The Story Of The Bedouin Arab And His Wife In The Masnavi, Nihat Değirmenci

Khazar Journal of Humanities and Social Sciences

This study analyzes the story of the "Bedouin Arab and His Wife," found in the first book of Celâleddîn-i Rûmî's Masnavi, through the dimensions of narrative techniques, symbolic fiction, and simile structure. Utilizing a text-centered qualitative analysis method, the research examines the multilayered structure of the work, which deviates from linear storytelling and employs embedded narrative and frame story techniques within modern narratological concepts. In the context of symbolic fiction, the processes through which the characters transition from the manifest to the allegorical plane are analyzed, identifying the Bedouin as "reason" and his wife as "self." The narrative emphasizes …

The Metaphor Of Intoxication In Sufi Poetry: In The Example Of Rūmī And Nasīmī (Comparative Study), Rashad Hasanov, Jokha Alharthi

Khazar Journal of Humanities and Social Sciences

This article examines the metaphor of intoxication (sukr) in the poetry of Jalāl al-Dīn Rūmī (1207–1273) and ʿImād al-Dīn Nasīmī (1369–1417) within the framework of Sufi metaphysics and comparative literary analysis. It explores how the symbolic language of intoxication articulates complex ethical, cognitive, and ontological ideas, particularly in relation to the motif of the ʿAhd-i Alast (Primordial Covenant). Selected examples from Rūmī’s Mas̱navī and Nasīmī’s Turkish divan are analyzed in order to examine the interplay between mystical experience, divine manifestation, and poetic expression. Situating these metaphors within the broader context of Persian and Turkish-Azerbaijani Sufi traditions, the article highlights the …

Light And Sama As A Common Language Of Sacred Architecture: A Comparative Reading Inspired By Rumi's Mysticism, Shabnam Golkarian

Khazar Journal of Humanities and Social Sciences

In the tradition of Islamic mysticism, light symbolizes the singular divine truth and circular motion expresses the human journey from multiplicity toward unity. In Rumi's thought, these two elements are not merely sensory phenomena but ontological structures of the spiritual journey, where light corresponds to presence and awareness, and sama represents the return to the center of truth. This article aims to explain the role of these two concepts in shaping the spatial expression of sacred architecture and examines how light and circular movement, rooted in Islamic mysticism and especially in Rumi's teachings, appear as a ``shared spiritual language'' in …

Rhythm As Ontology: Rethinking Rūmī'S Concept Of Samā Between Sufi Praxis And Contemporary Performance Theory, Ghadir Golkarian Oct 2026

Rhythm As Ontology: Rethinking Rūmī'S Concept Of Samā Between Sufi Praxis And Contemporary Performance Theory, Ghadir Golkarian

Khazar Journal of Humanities and Social Sciences

This article reconsiders the role of music, rhythm, and samāʿ in the thought of Jalāl al-Dīn Rūmī by moving beyond their conventional classification as symbolic or auxiliary elements of Sufi spirituality. While existing scholarship has predominantly framed Rūmī's intellectual legacy around metaphysical love, ethical universalism, or mystical pedagogy, rhythm and embodied movement have been mainly treated as representational or secondary devices. This study challenges that tendency and argues that samāʿ in Rūmī constitutes an ontological domain in which being is disclosed through movement rather than conceptual abstraction.
The article's originality lies in its theoretical repositioning of samāʿ as a mode …

Azerbaijani Enlightenment At The Turn Of The 19Th–20Th Centuries: East–West Intellectual Dialogue And Cultural Modernity, Zohra Aliyeva

Khazar Journal of Humanities and Social Sciences

This article examines the Azerbaijani Enlightenment of the late 19th–early 20th centuries as representing a distinct intellectual formation that emerged from sustained dialogue between Eastern traditions and Western modernity. It argues that Azerbaijani enlighteners did not merely obliviously assimilate European Enlightenment ideas, but actively reinterpreted them through the prism of local cultural, religious, and socio-political frameworks. Drawing on a comparative East–West perspective, the article analyses the philosophical writings, literary texts, and satirical journalism associated with such intellectuals as Mirza Fatali Akhundzadeh, Hasan bey Zardabi, Jalil Mammadguluzadeh, and Mammad Amin Rasulzade (Georgeon, 1996; Habibbayli, 2014; Swietochowski, 1995). Methodologically, …

Human Security Or State Security? Afghan Refugees And Policy Dilemmas In Pakistan, Saad Zakria, Azmat Ullah

Khazar Journal of Humanities and Social Sciences

Between 2008 and 2022, Pakistan faced a complex policy dilemma in managing Afghan refugees, balancing humanitarian obligations with national security concerns. After hosting Afghan refugees for more than four decades, Pakistan's approach gradually shifted from humanitarian accommodation and regional solidarity to securitization, stricter documentation, border controls, and repatriation efforts. Analysis of secondary data shows that many refugees experienced legal uncertainty, limited access to education and healthcare, poor labor conditions, and pressure to return despite instability in Afghanistan. Simultaneously, Pakistan confronted genuine challenges, including terrorism risks, irregular migration, economic burdens, declining international assistance, and pressure on public services. The study argues …

Islamic Hijab As A Border Of Cloth: A Critical Spatial Theory Perspective, Latifah Abdulgani Abdulrahman Bin Nafisah

Khazar Journal of Humanities and Social Sciences

This article presents a comprehensive analysis of the Islamic hijab, transcending traditional interpretations that often focus solely on political, cultural, religious, or gender dimensions. This study aims to provide a deeper understanding of the hijab through the application of critical spatial theory. It also fills this theoretical gap by providing a theoretical overview of the hijab with reference to Henri Lefebvre's concept of the spatial triad and Edward Soja's concept of Third Space, mainly. Using a conceptual and interdisciplinary strategy, the research combines the idea of sacred space in Islam with contemporary spatial theory to create a holistic understanding of …

Optimizing Marination Methodology, Holding Temperature, And Holding Time To Upgrade The Physicochemical And Sensorial Attributes Of Japanese Quail (Coturnix Japonica) Breast Fillets, Naveen Uduwawithana, Ruvini Mutucumarana

Turkish Journal of Veterinary & Animal Sciences

The aim was to optimize the effect of meat marination method (unmarinated, tumbling, injection, and immersion), holding temperature (4 oC and 8 oC), and holding time (4 h, 8 h, and 12 h) on the physicochemical and sensorial properties of Japanese quail (Coturnix japonica) breast fillets. Ninety-six deboned breast fillets (mean weight ± SD; 10 g ± 2) from 42-day-old unsexed Japanese quails were marinated. Injection marination showed the highest uptake (p < 0.05). The method × temperature × time interaction (p < 0.05) was significant for cooking yield, meat pH, hardness, cooking loss, and surface color lightness (L*). The highest pH (p < 0.05) was reported when the unmarinated control was retained for 8 h. Tumbling marinated meat when held for 12 h at 8 oC yielded the maximum cooking yield (60.3%). The cooking loss was minimal in unmarinated, tumbled, and immersion-marinated meat when held for 12 h. Irrespective of the temperature, 4-h holding time caused the minimum meat hardness in all four treatments. Tumble-marinated meat when held for 12 h at 8 oC resulted in the minimum cooking loss, hardness, and lightness (L*), as well as the maximum cooking yield. Meat when held at 4 oC for 4 h following injection marination had the highest scores for color, aroma, marinade penetration, flavor, and overall acceptability. In conclusion, quail breast fillets when tumble-marinated and held at 8 oC for 12 h were the best in terms of overall meat quality. Quail breast fillets held for 4 h at 4 oC following injection marination were rated highest by the panelists.
