A Menu And Its Implications On Filipino And American Culture, Caitlyn Begosa
A Menu And Its Implications On Filipino And American Culture, Caitlyn Begosa
SOURCE Explore Program
I analyzed a collection of menus collected from around 1950s to 1960s from the Kay Shaw Nelson Papers. I decided to focus my research around a menu from the Philippines. From here, I analyzed the graphic design and word choice of the menu to come to the conclusion that it was targeted towards an American or English-speaking tourist audience. Then, I researched the history of food tourism in the Philippines and how it helped flourish the country’s economy. Although the Filipino menu from Nelson’s collection inspired the brunt of my studies, I also noticed the small amount of Asian menus …

The Impact Of Institutional Support On African American Male College Students: A Phenomenological Analysis, Samuel Leron Speed
Doctoral Dissertations
This study is a powerful call to action for higher education institutions to recognize and address the unique challenges of African American male college students. Through a qualitative phenomenological approach grounded in Swail's (2004) Framework for Student Success, the study sheds light on the institutional factors that impact the lives of these students. The research design utilized semi-structured interviews with seven African American male participants, and the analysis reveals codes, clusters, and themes that emerged from their narratives, providing valuable insights into the impact of institutional support on their lives. The study highlights the importance of peer support, the challenges …

Species Delimitation Of Slimy Salamanders, Plethodon Kisatchie And Plethodon Mississippi, Across The Lower Mississippi River, Brock Hunter Stevenson
Master's Theses
Species are fundamental units of biodiversity yet delimiting species can be challenging. Slimy Salamanders of the Plethodon glutinosus species complex are a classic example of cryptic species for which species boundaries and relationships have proved difficult to determine. Once thought to be a single species ranging across the eastern United States, protein analysis revealed high genetic divergences among geographically distinct groups of populations, leading to 16 species being recognized within the group. Two of these species, the Louisiana Slimy Salamander (Plethodon kisatchie) and the Mississippi Slimy Salamander (Plethodon mississippi), are closely related but occur on opposite sides of the Mississippi …

An Assessment Of Training Needs Of Records Management Personnel At The National Archives Of Zimbabwe, Tinashe Mugwambi, Samson Mutsagondo
Library Philosophy and Practice (e-journal)
Assessing the training needs of staff is important as it enables organizations to identify skills gaps and so effect remedial action to bring about productivity, efficiency, and effectiveness. This study used the case study of the Records and Information Management section of the National Archives of Zimbabwe (NAZ) to identify areas where skills and competencies lacked, the reasons why there were skills gaps as well as mitigation measures to deal with the challenge. Without such an exercise, organizations continue to falter and fail to deliver as expected. The study used the organization-task-person model as its theoretical framework. The model propounds …

International Law Studies
Critics of the unwilling or unable doctrine suggest that it could undermine the United Nations collective security system and argue that it requires an unacceptable ceding of a State’s territorial sovereignty. Increased reliance on the doctrine following the terrorist attacks of 9/11, particularly in relation to the use of force against ISIL in Syria since 2014, has caused the doctrine to face significant scrutiny. The purpose of this article is to ascertain whether the unwilling or unable doctrine has reached customary international law status. If found to be the case, the doctrine would confirm the right of States to act …

In this study, we proposed a novel Multi-Fused Residual Convolutional Neural Network (MFR-CNN) with Auxiliary Fusing Layers (AuxFL) to diagnose various types of brain tumor MRI images. The MFR-CNN was designed to handle four specific cases, namely glioma, meningioma, pituitary, and healthy brain images, obtained from reliable Kaggle databases. Our proposed model integrated three state-of-the-art models into a single feature extraction pipeline, incorporating partially frozen and truncated layers. This strategic fusion enabled the propagation of robust features and improved diagnostic performance without incurring significant computing costs, unlike most existing state-of-the-art models. Moreover, the MFR-CNN effectively mitigated overfitting and performance saturation …

Structure-Based Targeting Of The Nemo:Ikk Interaction For Canonical Nf-Κb Inhibition, Amy Kennedy
Structure-Based Targeting Of The Nemo:Ikk Interaction For Canonical Nf-Κb Inhibition, Amy Kennedy
Dartmouth College Ph.D Dissertations
The NF-κB pathway is important for cell survival and proliferation, inflammation, and innate immunity, and its dysregulation is a common theme in many cancers, autoimmune disorders, and other disease states. The protein-protein interaction between the scaffolding protein NEMO and the kinase IKK in the NF-κB pathway represents a compelling target for selective NF-κB inhibition because it occurs only in the canonical branch of the NF-κB pathway. Disruption of the NEMO:IKK interaction has been established for decades in the literature as a safe and effective way to selectively inhibit overactivation of the canonical branch of the NF-κB pathway. The benchmark in …

A Poetics Of Entanglement: The Enmeshed Creation Of Interrogative Space, Phil Spotswood
Theses and Dissertations
This dissertation theorizes and deploys a poetics of entanglement as a creative practice for questioning relationality and its role in meaning-making. The dissertation includes a critical preface that explores a poetics of entanglement by analyzing poetry by gay cis male US poets whose work is thematically linked by their creative disruptions of the feeling of shame. The dissertation’s creative chapter is a collection of original poems titled It Bears Repeating; the poems deploy a poetics of entanglement to open questions in the shamed body. The dissertation concludes with considerations for how a poetics of entanglement might be taught to undergraduate …

Acquired hemophilia A is a rare condition characterized by the development of autoantibodies against coagulation factor VIII. It often initially presents as serious bleeding in the absence of risk factors and carries high morbidity and mortality if not diagnosed early. Due to its rare nature, data is limited, and guidelines are primarily based on expert opinion. Here we present a case of an elderly patient with severe gastrointestinal bleeding found to have activated partial thromboplastin times, plasma mixing studies, and coagulation factor activity levels consistent with acquired hemophilia A. We hope to bring awareness of this rare disease and promote …

Boerhaave syndrome (BS) is a rare clinical diagnosis associated with a high morbidity and mortality rate. Diagnosis of this condition is usually delayed which can lead to a very poor outcome. The timing of presentation and time to management plays a very important role in the prognosis and selection of the management method. With the advances seen in therapeutic endoscopy, many authors have been exploring the possibility of shifting the focus of management from surgery to interventional endoscopy. We present a case report of a patient presenting with BS that was successfully managed endoscopically. We also reviewed the literature on …

Gout can potentially be diagnosed clinically and treated, if classical symptoms are present. In some cases, gout and osteomyelitis can have similar presenting signs and symptoms and it may be difficult to differentiate just on clinical presentation, routine laboratory workup and imaging like radiography or ultrasound. Arthrocentesis can be crucial in such scenarios to differentiate the two entities as missed opportunity to treat infectious etiology can have detrimental outcomes. We present a case of patient with ankle pain and swelling treated as recurrent gout, as there were no risk factors for osteomyelitis. Arthrocentesis confirmed the diagnosis of osteomyelitis and patient …

Coronary artery anomalies (CAA) define a wide array of congenital abnormalities that stem from the origin, course, and distribution of coronary arteries. CAAs can lead to severe complications such as arrhythmias, myocardial ischemia, and even sudden cardiac death. We describe the case of a 58-year-old female who presented to the emergency department with chest discomfort and shortness of breath and received a workup for acute coronary syndrome. She underwent a cardiac catheterization, which incidentally found an anomalous left anterior descending artery with a right sinus of Valsalva origin, an absent left circumflex coronary artery, and a dominant right coronary artery …

Patients with cancer are at risk for thrombotic complications due to a hypercoagulable state. However, the benefit of prophylactic anticoagulation is unclear in many subsets of these patients. For the first episode of acute thromboembolic disease (VTE) in patients with active cancer, anticoagulant therapy is administered for at least three to six months. Herein, we present a 31-year-old female with active, recurrent stage IIIa classical Hodgkin lymphoma (CHL) (nodular sclerosis), previously treated for proximal upper extremity deep vein thrombosis (DVT), presenting for evaluation of shortness of breath and eventually diagnosed with bilateral pulmonary embolism (PE) secondary to a right atrial …
