Open Access Theses & Dissertations

This project looks at the unique circumstances of ethnic Mexican students in West Texas following the Brown v. Board of Education decision in 1954. It reveals intentional school segregation in the West Texas cities of Midland, Odessa, Pecos, and El Paso and utilizes various court cases that took place between 1950 and 1980 in the Lone Star State to highlight the ways that the federal mandate neglected Mexican children in the Southwest. It includes archival sources, historical litigation, educational records, and oral histories to piece together a historical narrative that has been overlooked.

Progression Of Black Women In Tenure Ranked Positions, Unique Givens

Electronic Theses, Projects, and Dissertations

The intersectionality of race and gender affects the progression and experience of Black women in tenure-ranked positions in higher education. As Black women navigate the tenure process, they encounter systemic issues while fulfilling the criteria of teaching, service, and research. Black women's experiences while obtaining and maintaining tenure-ranked positions in Southern California reflect the discrimination, biases, lack of respect, and value of their roles and contributions to academia. In addition, Black women are being challenged more and questioned regarding their abilities and roles by peers, students, and academic administration. Research studies in the past have demonstrated the underrepresentation of Black …

However, the Coachella Valley, an area located in Southern California, has received little attention from the literature on homelessness. This study sought to understand the phenomenon of homelessness in the Coachella Valley, mainly its causes and means of prevention. Taking a …

Non-Binary Identity Within Competency Training For Mental/Behavioral Health Providers: A Systematic Review, Alexis Mcintyre May 2024

Non-Binary Identity Within Competency Training For Mental/Behavioral Health Providers: A Systematic Review, Alexis Mcintyre

Electronic Theses, Projects, and Dissertations

This research project aimed to identify the level of inclusion of the identity “non-binary” within LGBTQ+ competency training for mental/behavioral health service. Non-binary has become more widely used within the last decade as LGBTQ+ identifications evolve and become more open. Existing research shows the need for mental/behavioral health services within this community, as well as the biases and misinformation that providers hold about gender identity. This study utilized a systematic review of peer-reviewed articles discussing research on conducting LGBTQ+ competency training for staff providing mental/behavioral health services to look for education on non-binary identity.

Effects Of Voluntary Removal On An Immigrant Family, Miriam Jimenez May 2024

Effects Of Voluntary Removal On An Immigrant Family, Miriam Jimenez

Electronic Theses, Projects, and Dissertations

This study explores the effects on the family system when undocumented parents voluntarily leave the U.S. to gain legal status while their children remain behind. This study looks into the financial, emotional, and relational burden caused by the separation in order to gain legal status. This information is important to find possible alternatives and resources that can help families who go through a similar situation. There is an estimate of 1.1 million undocumented immigrants that can be led to leave the U.S. to gain legal status and spend years in their home country, which could potentially mean separation of families …

Research Review: "Evaluating The Kidcope For Children In Active Duty Military Families", Institute For Veterans And Military Families At Syracuse University

Institute for Veterans and Military Families

The study aimed to replicate the factor structure of the KidCOPE in children from military families (N=2256, ages 7–12). However, no prior factor structure could be replicated. Exploratory and confirmatory factor analyses revealed a 2-factor model, but it was not confirmed. This suggests limitations of the KidCOPE as a valid measure of coping style among military children.

Development Of Novel Immobilized Copper–Ligand Complex For Click Chemistry Of Biomolecules, Rene Kandler, Yomal Benaragama, Manoranjan Bera, Caroline Wang, Rasheda Aktar Samiha, W.M.C. Sameera, Samir Das, Arundhati Nag

Chemistry

Copper-catalyzed azide–alkyne cycloaddition click (CuAAC) reaction is widely used to synthesize drug candidates and other biomolecule classes. Homogeneous catalysts, which consist of copper coordinated to a ligand framework, have been optimized for high yield and specificity of the CuAAC reaction, but CuAAC reaction with these catalysts requires the addition of a reducing agent and basic conditions, which can complicate some of the desired syntheses. Additionally, removing copper from the synthesized CuAAC-containing biomolecule is necessary for biological applications but inconvenient and requires additional purification steps. We describe here the design and synthesis of a PNN-type pincer ligand complex with copper (I) …

Effect Of Simulated Gastrointestinal Digestion On Antioxidant, And Anti-Inflammatory Activities Of Bioactive Peptides Generated In Sausages Fermented With Staphylococcus Simulans Qb7, Hongying Li, Hongbing Fan, Zihan Wang, Qiujin Zhu, Jianping Wu

Animal and Food Sciences Faculty Publications

Dry-fermented sausages are a good source of bioactive peptides, whose stability against gastrointestinal (GI) digestion determines their bioaccessibility. This study focused on evaluating the effect of peptide extracts from sausages fermented with Staphylococcus simulans QB7 during in vitro simulated GI digestion, including peptide profi les and antioxidant and anti-infl ammatory activities. Peptides present in sausages were degraded during digestion, with molecular weight reduced from > 12 kDa to < 1.5 kDa. Besides, the content of amino acids increased from 381.15 to 527.07 mg/g, especially tyrosine being found only after GI digestion. The anti-infl ammatory activities were increased after GI digestion, however, the changes in antioxidant activities were the opposite. A total number of 255, 252 and 386 peptide sequences were identified in undigested, peptic-digested and GI-digested samples, respectively. PeptideRanker, BIOPEP-UWM and admetSAR were used to further predict the functional properties and intestinal absorption of the identified peptide sequences from GI digestion. Finally, 18 peptides were discovered to possess either antioxidant or anti-infl ammatory capacities.

The Sonatine For Flute And Piano By Pierre Louis Joseph Boulez, And Its Contribution To Modern Day Flute Performance, Myles Roberts

Dissertations

Following the Second World War, Pierre Louis Joseph Boulez developed a less-than-ideal reputation for his strong views within the modernist movement, and the reaction to his Sonatine for flute and piano reflected these polarized feelings. The Sonatine was initially written for the French flutist Jean Pierre Rampal, who after a failed negotiation with Boulez, refused to premier it. The work was finally premiered by Jan Van Boterdael and Marcelle Mercenier in Brussels in 1947, and the first performance of the revised version was held in Darmstadt in July 1956, by the Italian flutist Saverio Gazzelloni. Gazzelloni’s performance had the audience …

(Wp 2024-03) The Dynamic Temporal Sequence And Reflexive Adjustment Behavior: Foundations For A Behavioral Alternative To Optimization Theory, John B. Davis

Economics Working Papers

This paper discusses the difference between mainstream and heterodox economics in terms of philosophy’s distinction between two types of temporal sequences governing events: the static, truth-tenseless before-after sequence and the dynamic, truth-tensed past-present-future sequence. Mainstream theory and optimization analysis employs the first. However, Aristotle showed long ago this implies fatalism. Heterodox explanations employ the second, which I argue implies people reflexively adjust their choices over time in a combined backward-looking and forward-looking way that rules out optimization. Central to this explanation of behavior is how uncertainty about the future is connected to uncertainty about the past. I show this can …

Impact Of Medicaid Redetermination On Underserved Populations In Region 7 States: A Review, Brianna Parr

Capstone Experience: Master of Public Health

When the COVID-19 Public Health Emergency ended in May of 2023, Medicaid began the process of redetermination across the states and returned to its original eligibility rules. Because of this, the healthcare status of many Americans was affected, resulting in the loss of healthcare coverage for millions of people. Of those who have lost coverage, children make up almost half of the total. This paper assesses the negative effects of Medicaid redetermination on children and other underserved populations in communities across the four states in Region 7 (Nebraska, Iowa, Missouri, and Kansas) and identifies programs that these states can implement …

Disabilities And Snap Work Requirements: A Scoping Review, Jacquelyn Platt

Capstone Experience: Master of Public Health

This scoping review aims to assess if the criteria to determine Supplemental Nutrition Assistance Program (SNAP) work requirement exemptions provide equal access to individuals with disabilities (IWDs) using a modified PRISMA analysis framework. IWDs applying for SNAP must meet at least one of three requirements to be exempt from work requirements, but these requirements may be disproportionately burdensome for them. SNAP has a long history of expanding food security throughout the U.S., benefiting millions of families. Almost two-thirds of SNAP participants are children, older adults, or IWDs. Children and older adults are exempt from work requirements and IWDs may be …
