Compressor Rotor Joints And Interference Fit Study, Isabela Jimenez, Aubrey Perez, Isaiah Guerrero, Jireh Velasquez
Compressor Rotor Joints And Interference Fit Study, Isabela Jimenez, Aubrey Perez, Isaiah Guerrero, Jireh Velasquez
Mechanical Engineering
Solar Turbines need a comprehensive study on the effects axial and radial inference fits have on turbine compressor rotor stiffness. The aft weldment of the compressor has press-fit dowel pins and pilot joints to connect one weldment section to another. These fits need to be assessed through a finite element modal analysis, as well as practically tested through modal impacts to investigate how the fits affect the stiffness of the turbine’s connected weldments. The experimental data will be used to validate the finite element analysis (FEA) model.

Forged Carbon Fiber Adventure Project, Timothy Villafana, Victor Javadoff, Nathan Pittiglio, Cooper Starr
Mechanical Engineering
Forged carbon fiber compression molding remains a relatively under-researched manufacturing process. While there are documented processes online, the options are few and far between. Our sponsor and case-study user, Dr. Mello, tasked us with the goal of researching and developing a process for forged carbon fiber compression molding through means of modifying his prototype of a bike pack handlebar cradle (figure 3). This prototype will allow us to create tooling which will be used to manufacture a handlebar cradle that can withstand larger loads and more extreme environments using our developed process. A handlebar cradle is a structural support for …

The objective of this project is to design an innovative potable water dispenser capable of safely delivering hot, ambient, and chilled water on demand for human lander missions. The system will support astronauts’ hydration and food rehydration needs while minimizing mass, power, maintenance, and contamination risks in microgravity and partial-gravity environments. Current spacecraft dispensers, such as the International Space Station (ISS) system, provide only heated water and have limited temperature control, cleaning accessibility, and microbial resilience. Building on NASA heritage designs and lessons learned from the ISS Potable Water Dispenser, this project advances a lighter, simpler, and more energy-efficient concept …

Mechanical Engineering
Our sponsor, David Royce, built an initial e-bike chopper prototype and desired an improved, next generation version. Our team designed and manufactured an electric bicycle to achieve the rugged visual style of a classic chopper motorcycle while improving stability and usability. The team built a functional E-Chopper prototype using a 4130 steel frame, custom dropouts, a long front fork, wide rear tire, ape-hanger handlebars, and prebuilt electric components such as the battery, hub motor, controller, throttle, and display. The design focused on reducing excess weight, improving frame rigidity, and meeting California e-bike regulations.

Buell Motorcycle Extended Swing Arm, Joseph Camuccio, Riley Clark, Vincent Sclimenti, Tristan Turcios
Mechanical Engineering
Buell motorcycle riders, including our sponsor Rick Lasko, need a way to easily and affordably manufacture and replace their swing arms with extended versions (4”, 8”, 12”, and 16”) that maintain the stock Buell aesthetic while also meeting the safety standards required for performance-intensive applications, such as drag racing. Each extended swing arm must be just as safe, strong, and rigid as the original swing arm. Currently, there is no convenient and affordable solution to this problem, which is why our sponsor, Rick Lasko, wanted a validated, repeatable manufacturing process and design that would allow riders to safely and consistently …

Design And Implementation Of An Intelligent Wearable Health Monitoring System Using The Shimmer Platform, Christopher Tu, Rafael Martinez
Computer Engineering
This report goes over the wearable health monitoring system that we built that uses an activity classification system to tell what you are doing real time. We used a Shimmer3 sensor to collect accelerometer data and streamed it via Bluetooth to our laptops where we processed the data and ran a machine learning classifier to detect if someone is resting, walking or running. We collected our own data to train the Random Forest classifier that we used from scratch and ended with 98% accuracy. The system has a live dashboard implemented into it that shows sensor data and the current …

Emotional Support Through Ai: Venting To Artificial Intelligence Or A Perceived Human May Offer Comparable Emotional Well-Being Benefits, Meilan Hu, Jerlyn Q. H. Ho, Claire Ng, Shermaine S. M. Wong, Andree Hartanto
Research Collection School of Social Sciences
Artificial Intelligence (AI) chatbots are increasingly being explored as sources of informal emotional support, with emerging evidence suggesting that venting to these systems can reduce negative affect. Yet, it remains unclear whether such benefits depend on the responder's perceived identity. Given that emotional relief from venting often hinges on perceived authenticity and emotional validation, this study investigates whether the emotional well-being benefits of venting differ when users believe they are interacting with an AI chatbot versus a human, even when responses are content-matched. In a pre-registered experiment ( N = 279), participants were randomly assigned to either an AI-assisted venting …

Agnosticism and atheism are often grouped simply as nonreligious identities, yet emerging research highlights their distinct psychological profiles and social implications. Among these distinctions, collective narcissism—characterized by strong attachment to one’s group, exceptionalism, and grievance for recognition—offers a framework for understanding identity processes in both nonreligious groups. We examined whether agnostics and atheists exhibit collective narcissism and its forms (agentic—focused on exceptional effectiveness; communal—focused on exceptional morality) similarly to believers. We explored crossdenominational variance in agentic and communal collective narcissism levels relying on data from 77 countries (N = 3,570; 1227 agnostics, 2343 atheists). Agnostics and atheists from secular countries …

“Megadeal” Subsidies, Local Spillovers And Corporate Innovation, Yoojin Lee, Shaphan Ng, Aruhn Venkat
Research Collection School Of Accountancy
We examine whether the largest place-based, firm-specific corporate subsidies (“Megadeals”) awarded by state and local governments affect local firms’ innovation. First, we document that 1) subsidy firms innovate in the subsidized county and 2) subsidy firms bring inventors from other counties into the subsidized county, consistent with subsidy firms generating new knowledge locally. In our main test, we use a stacked cohort design with stringent fixed effects to document that local firms increase patenting following a Megadeal. Cross-sectionally, effects are increasing 1) in subsidy firm innovativeness, 2) in the technological closeness of subsidy firms and local firms, 3) when subsidy …

Abington Jefferson Health Papers
The Global Initiative for Asthma (GINA) report and national and international guidelines have shifted away from short-acting beta2-agonist (SABA)-only bronchodilators as first-line asthma rescue therapy, recognizing that both bronchoconstriction and inflammation underlie the increase in symptoms preceding an exacerbation. Instead, the GINA Committee supports strategies to reduce inflammation, such as anti-inflammatory reliever (AIR) therapy (as-needed, low-dose inhaled corticosteroid [ICS]–formoterol or SABA–ICS for symptom relief) and single maintenance and reliever therapy (SMART) or maintenance and reliever therapy (MART; i.e., ICS–formoterol used as both maintenance and as-needed rescue therapy). This narrative review discusses the rationale behind the move toward AIR and SMART …

Sunflower (Helianthus annuus) productivity is highly dependent on pollinators, yet the effects of climate on pollination services and crop yield remain poorly understood. In this study, we investigate how temperature gradients influence flower-visiting communities, pollination services, and sunflower productivity across Europe and Northern Africa. We conducted standardized two-year (2022 and 2023) pollination exclusion experiments across 36 sunflower fields spanning a broad climatic gradient, from temperate regions in Slovenia to arid conditions in Algeria. We found that sunflower production (seed set, seed number, and oil content) relied heavily on insect pollination. However, this benefit declined with rising temperatures, likely due to …
Imagination And Its Mirror, Rubén Vega Balbás
Imagination And Its Mirror, Rubén Vega Balbás
Artículos científicos
The mirror exercise is a basic exercise in actor training. Mirrors are ubiquitous in dance halls. Theatre has been considered metaphorically as the glass where society gazes itself. From a philo-sophical perspective, the main question addressed here is: «How does reflectiveness concern imagination and performance?» This article in-quires on both sides of the mirror about the transmutation of ideas into images and the reverse, exploring whether physical bodies can perform subtlety. Drawing on Foucault’s heterotopia, Merleau-Ponty’s phenom-enology of perception, Deleuze’s monism, the Sufi concept of barzakh(Ibn ’Arabi, Corbin), Tantric pratibimba, and Taoist mirror-mind, the study gathers several transcendental philosophies into …

Environmental DNA (eDNA) has emerged as a powerful tool to support the conservation of threatened species. The sawfishes are one of the most imperiled vertebrate groups, with all five species classified as Critically Endangered on the IUCN Red List of Threatened Species. Owing to their toothy rostra, sawfishes are easily entangled in a wide range of fishing gear, with mortalities in fisheries and loss of habitat driving global declines. The Largetooth Sawfish, Pristis pristis, historically had a circumtropical range, but has experienced severe declines in geographic range and abundance. Viable populations are thought to be confined to northern Australia, but …

Background: Missing appointments delay treatment affecting patient outcomes and healthcare resource utilization. Adherence to scheduled appointments has not been studied in patients with HPV-related oropharyngeal squamous cell carcinoma (HPV-OPSCC). Methods: We collected data from 36,690,000 scheduled medical outpatient encounters at the University of Kentucky Health Care from 2012 to 2021. A total of 36,579 of these encounters were from 334 patients with HPV-OPSCC. We performed regression analysis of no-show appointments by demographics, tumor characteristics, and insurance factors. Results: The no-shows rate for appointments was significantly higher for the HPV-OPSCC cohort (4.6% vs. 2.2% p < 0.001). The HPV-OPSCC cohort missed 36% of their appointments. Black, Hispanic, younger, those who have ever smoked and patients with advanced tumor stage all had statistically significantly higher no-show rates (p < 0.01). Conclusions: Treatment delay impacts cancer treatment efficacy and no-show appointments burden medical systems. Further research into targeted interventions is needed to lower barriers for attending appointments.

Assessing Rural Homelessness: A Mixed-Methods Case Study, Matthew Lyons, Ashley Feierstein, Christy Storey, Akilah Hairston, Jonathan Jones, Jada Brown, Sarah H. Cross
Journal of Rural Social Sciences
Rural homelessness represents a significant public health and human rights challenge, but research on homelessness in the United States has predominantly focused on urban settings. This case study describes a mixed-methods assessment of the prevalence, causes, and consequences of homelessness in a rural county. Through both surveys and interviews with stakeholders from multiple sectors (including both service providers and those experiencing homelessness), we built a rich picture of the scale and experiential dimensions of homelessness within the county. Here, we present our research methods, the main findings of each primary data collection arm, and the actionable conclusions drawn from the …

Rural Communities Transformed By Immigration Raids: A Community Of Capitals Perspective, Diego Thompson, Silvina Lopez Barrera
Journal of Rural Social Sciences
In 2019, communities of Central Mississippi experienced large-scale immigration raids. Past studies on immigration enforcement operations show that these types of events have significant consequences. Despite this scholarly evidence, little is known about the effects of large immigration raids and local responses in rural communities. Given the ongoing initiatives to carry out mass detention and deportation of immigrants, learning more about these events and the communities affected is paramount. Based on data from semi-structured interviews, this study uses the Community Capitals Framework to examine how large immigration raids have transformed communities. Results show that the raids had negative consequences in …

Behind The ‘Lettuce Curtains:’ Rural Homelessness In The Salinas Valley, California, Allison Evans
Journal of Rural Social Sciences
Rural homelessness remains under-researched despite its prevalence outside the city. This research note presents preliminary findings from a case study in the Salinas Valley, California, examining how rurality—particularly its statistical definitions and socio-cultural conceptions—shapes homelessness policy formation, resource allocation, and local politics. Semi-structured interviews conducted in spring 2023, alongside document analysis, explore rural homelessness in this unique context. Findings suggest that rural homelessness is highly salient to local politicians and policy-makers, particularly since the COVID-19 pandemic, with service clustering in Salinas and other regional towns with more progressive policies. Challenges include housing diverse unhoused subpopulations, especially migrant farmworkers, and confronting …
