Impact Of Organizational Stressors On Stress Among Foreign Construction Workers From Nepal, Khursheed Ahmed, Mei-Yung Leung, Wenqian Yang
CIB Conferences
The construction industry in developed regions relies heavily on foreign labour. Working in a new environment exposes these workers to unique organizational stressors that can deteriorate their well-being. Specifically, Nepalese Construction Workers (NCWs) face distinct challenges that may lead to severe physical and psychological stress. This study, therefore, aims to identify the critical organizational stressors and their impact on the stress of NCWs. Based on a conceptual model, a questionnaire survey was adopted to collect data from NCWs. In order to investigate the relationships among stressors (i.e., ethnic barriers, lack of acceptance, insufficient authority, low reward, and unfair treatment) and …
The Impact Of Commute Length On Safety And Wellbeing In Uk Construction Workers, Amy Brandreth, Billy Hare, Kenneth Lawani
The Impact Of Commute Length On Safety And Wellbeing In Uk Construction Workers, Amy Brandreth, Billy Hare, Kenneth Lawani
CIB Conferences
This paper, contributing a small part to a related PhD, uses a systematic literature review approach to examine the impact of commuting on fatigue, safety and wellbeing among construction workers. Eight empirical studies were analysed using Braun and Clarke’s thematic analysis with three themes being identified: commute length, long working hours and commuting vs staying away from home. The results indicate that commutes can far exceed the UK average commute length, and this, combined with long working hours, reduces sleep opportunities. However, staying away from home introduces lifestyle and environmental factors, such as diet and exercise, which may also impair …

Reliability Of Human Point Of Work Risk Assessment Vs Artificial Intelligence Risk Assessment For Construction Health And Safety, Kenneth Lawani, Billy Hare, Michael Tong, Farhad Sadeghineko
CIB Conferences
The significance of construction workers being involved in Point of Work Risk Assessment (POWRA) cannot be overemphasised. It is a quick, on-the-spot assessment performed by workers before starting a task, focusing on the current conditions and any hazards identified. There are anecdotal claims that AI is capable of providing robust risk assessment similar to or better than those developed by construction workers if adequate prompts are provided to the AI tool. However, there is no credible evidence to support these suggestions. The aim of this paper is to explore the reliability of AI generated construction project risk assessment vs human …

CIB Conferences
The level of awareness of occupational health hazards (OHH) in construction falls below that of occupational safety. This raises concern over the effectiveness of OHH interventions, specifically the quality of training provided to construction workers. Continuous exposure of workers to OHH has long-term implications on construction workers’ wellbeing as these are not easily detected. The aim of this paper is to explore the development of OHH training interventions. This study develops a prototype 3D simulation training to accentuate the consequences of workers’ exposure to construction OHH and how to mitigate such OHH with the right training. The core gameplay adopts …

The Effectiveness Of Health And Safety Practices On Peaking Power Stations, Nkosinathi Ndlovu, Claire Deacon, John Smallwood
CIB Conferences
Peaking Power Stations (PPSs) are required to undertake maintenance known as ‘outages’, on a regular basis. Injuries occur during general maintenance and outage activities. Such injuries in turn result in managers at PPSs perceiving health and safety (H&S) management as ineffective. The effectiveness of H&S management systems, particularly accident and incident reporting mechanisms, is critical for enhancing H&S performance in high-risk sectors such as power generation. Poor H&S performance could further result in lower production, higher insurance costs, and a detrimental financial impact on the economy, forcing workers to retire early with persistent disabilities. The aim of the study reported …
