Places are at once inhabited by various individuals who are themselves members of diverse communities and whose experiences of the same everyday living environment can vastly differ. Everyone lives in some place, but not everyone is fortunate enough to feel as if they belong to that place, as if that place is their home. According to José Medina (2017), those who inhabit a place they are unable to make their home experience a unique form of displacement, that of being displaced within a place. This, he claims, is a problem for everyone—not just for those experiencing displacement within …

The Effect Of Tio2 On The Electrochemical Performance Of Sb2o3 Anodes For Li-Ion Batteries, Kithzia Gomez, Elizabeth M. Fletes, Jason Parsons, Mataz Alcoutlabi
Mechanical Engineering Faculty Publications
Antimony (Sb) and its composites have been recognized as potentially good anode materials for lithium-ion batteries (LIBs) due to their relatively high theoretical capacity of 660 mAh g−1 and to their low cost. However, Sb-based anodes suffer from a high-volume change during the lithiation/delithiation process that results in capacity fading and anode degradation after prolonged charge/discharge cycles. To address this issue, Sb2O3/TiO2 nanocomposite electrodes can be synthesized and used as anodes for LIBs with high capacity and good electrochemical stability. In the present work, TiO2@Sb2O3 composites with different (TiO2:Sb2O3) ratios of 0:1, 1:1, 1:4 and 3:1 were synthesized and directly …

Two major challenges, high cost and short lifespan, have been hindering the commercialization process of low-temperature fuel cells. Professor Wei’s group has been focusing on decreasing cathode Pt loadings without losses of activity and durability, and their research advances in this area over the past three decades are briefly reviewed herein. Regarding the Pt-based catalysts and the low Pt usage, they have firstly tried to clarify the degradation mechanism of Pt/C catalysts, and then demonstrated that the activity and stability could be improved by three strategies: regulating the nanostructures of the active sites, enhancing the effects of support materials, and …

Sorbitol-Electrolyte-Additive Based Reversible Zinc Electrochemistry, Qiong Sun, Hai-Hui Du, Tian-Jiang Sun, Dian-Tao Li, Min Cheng, Jing Liang, Hai-Xia Li, Zhan-Liang Tao
Journal of Electrochemistry
The unstable zinc (Zn)/electrolyte interfaces formed by undesired dendrites and parasitic side reactions greatly hinder the development of aqueous zinc ion batteries. Herein, the hydroxy-rich sorbitol was used as an additive to reshape the solvation structure and modulate the interface chemistry. The strong interactions among sorbitol and both water molecules and Zn electrode can reduce the free water activity, optimize the solvation shell of water and Zn2+ ions, and regulate the formation of local water (H2O)-poor environment on the surface of Zn electrode, which effectively inhibit the decomposition of water molecules, and thus, achieve the thermodynamically stable …

An Optimization-Based Monte Carlo Method For Estimating The Two-Terminal Survival Signature Of Networks With Two Component Classes, Daniel B. Lopes Da Silva, Kelly M. Sullivan
Industrial Engineering Faculty Publications and Presentations
Evaluating two-terminal network reliability is a classical problem with numerous applications. Because this problem is #𝖯-Complete, practical studies involving large systems commonly resort to approximating or estimating system reliability rather than evaluating it exactly. Researchers have characterized signatures, such as the destruction spectrum and survival signature, which summarize the system's structure and give rise to procedures for evaluating or approximating network reliability. These procedures are advantageous if the signature can be computed efficiently; however, computing the signature is challenging for complex systems. With this motivation, we consider the use of Monte Carlo (MC) simulation to estimate the survival signature of …

Data-Driven Viewpoint For Developing Next-Generation Mg-Ion Solid-State Electrolytes, Fang-Ling Yang, Ryuhei Sato, Eric Jian-Feng Cheng, Kazuaki Kisu, Qian Wang, Xue Jia, Shin-Ichi Orimo, Hao Li
Journal of Electrochemistry
Magnesium (Mg) is a promising alternative to lithium (Li) in solid-state batteries due to its abundance and high theoretical volumetric capacity. However, the sluggish Mg-ion conduction in the lattice of solid-state electrolytes (SSEs) is one of the key challenges that hamper the development of Mg-ion solid-state batteries. Though various Mg-ion SSEs have been reported in recent years, key insights are hard to be derived from a single literature report. Besides, the structure-performance relationships of Mg-ion SSEs need to be further unraveled to provide a more precise design guideline for SSEs. In this Viewpoints article, we analyze the structural characteristics of …

Sociocultural Environment And Agency In Identity Construction Of English Language Teachers, Bharat Prasad Neupane , Phd
The Qualitative Report
Identity is an emerging field in educational research focusing on how teacher education programs, training, reflective practices, and short-term interventions impact the identity negotiation of teachers (Gautam, 2018). However, this study reports how different levels of sociocultural environments influence teachers and what initiatives they take for professional development and identity construction. Drawing on Wenger’s (1998) notion of communities of practice and Norton’s (2013) investing, this study sought to uncover the interchange of the development of learning communities and teachers by investigating the life history of four secondary-level English language teachers derived through informal conversations and in-depth interviews. Teachers’ life stories …

Credit takeover in a leasing financing agreement can be carried out in accordance with the provisions of the financing agreement, namely with the knowledge of the leasing party or finance company and must be carried out based on the legal provisions of novation. However, in practice, credit takeovers are often carried out without the knowledge and approval of the finance company or also known as underhand credit takeovers. This paper will discuss the case of Decision No. 3/Pdt.G/2019/PN. PgP regarding an unofficial credit takeover that resulted in the detention of the car's BPKB, even though repayment has been made by …

Indonesian law, originating from the Dutch law, includes the lawsuit for Perbuatan Melawan Hukum or PMH, which originates from onrechtmatige daad in the Netherlands. Despite undergoing developments, PMH in Indonesia still focuses on compensation for parties experiencing losses, in contrast to the concept of the Law of Torts in England, which aims not only to provide compensation but also to prevent future trots and deter perpetrators. A notable difference lies in the consideration of the perpetrator's intention, where PMH in Indonesia does not take intention into account, while the Law of Torts in United Kingdom incorporates the perpetrator's intention as …

Agreement as a personal guarantee places oneself in a quite risky position. As regulated in Article 1820 of the Civil Code, a personal guarantee is obligated to pay off the debts of a debtor who fails to pay their debts. However, in carrying out the agreement, a personal guarantee is given a privilege based on Article 1831 of the Civil Code in the form of the right to demand execution of the principal’s beforehand. Furthermore, Article 1832 paragraph (1) of the Civil Code which regulates the relinquishment of personal guarantee’s privilege indicated the possibility of personal guarantee being …

The Logical Reasoning Dilemma Of Llms: A Mapping Deficit In Representation Acquisition, Yiling Wu
Theses
Currently, Large Language Models (LLMs) based on the Generative Pre-trained Transformer architecture have made breakthroughs in multilingual language processing tasks and performed similar language processing capabilities to humans. However, their performance in dealing with tasks involving reasoning, especially logical reasoning, show significant shortcomings. In this paper, we argue that logical reasoning competence requires a certain type of representation acquisition capability. Based on this, in order to assess whether LLMs have the potential to overcome the shortcomings of their logical reasoning competence in their subsequent development, this work compares the representation acquisition processes of humans and LLMs. This comparison reveals that …

The performance of small-scale propellers was experimentally measured at low advance ratios and Reynolds numbers. The propeller diameters range from 14 to 19 inches, with all propellers having the same pitch value of 12. Using a thrust stand situated in a low-speed open-circuit wind tunnel, the propeller thrust, torque, and angular speed were measured at various freestream velocities. The results from this study offer insights on the performance of small propellers at low advance ratios and low Reynolds numbers. Propeller performance results at these conditions tend to be limited in the literatures. At the same pitch value of 12, the …

Effective Vocabulary Instructions In Kindergarten Through Third Grade, Allison Ericksen
Effective Vocabulary Instructions In Kindergarten Through Third Grade, Allison Ericksen
Masters Projects
This project proposal explains the lack of research and emphasis put on vocabulary instruction in kindergarten through third grade. There is a vocabulary gap between students who come from low SES and high SES that puts students at a disadvantage when it comes to reading, since 60% of comprehension is tied to vocabulary (Stahl and Nagy, 2005). However, the gap is often not addressed until later grades when it starts to be more necessary to comprehend what they read in order to learn. Teaching vocabulary in the younger grades will help prevent the gap from growing too large for those …
Resisting Exploitation: A Study Of Karen Joyce Warren’S Ecofeminist Ethic In The Selected Indian Movies, Kogila S
Theses and Dissertations
According to Warren, “The exploitation of nature and animals is justified by feminising them; the exploitation of women is justified by naturalising them” (EPWP 27). Women and nature have the same right to live independently. They are not meant for exploitation. However, patriarchy has long exploited them.
The changes are happening only in the ratio, not in the act of controlling. This research aims to study the undervalued state of women and others in nature concerning Warren's eight features of ecofeminist ethic in Indian movies, namely Harish Ram L's Thumbaa (2019), Amit Masurkar’s Sherni (2021), and Rathindran Prasad R’s Boomika …

This study uses the agent-based modeling technique to discover propositions on innovation diffusion that are empirically testable. It finds the adoption rate is positively related to (1) the size of the population, (2) the degree of heterogeneity in consumer learning in the population, (3) the degree of heterogeneity in consumer innovativeness in the population, and (4) the fit-in- desire in the population for innovation. This research adds insights to the innovation diffusion literature and lays the groundwork for future empirical research.

Coastal erosion mobilizes large quantities of organic matter (OM) to the Arctic Ocean where it may fuel greenhouse gas emissions and marine production. While the biodegradability of permafrost‐derived dissolved organic carbon (DOC) has been extensively studied in inland soils and freshwaters, few studies have examined dissolved OM (DOM) leached from eroding coastal permafrost in seawater. To address this knowledge gap, we sampled three horizons from bluff exposures near Drew Point, Alaska: seasonally thawed active layer soils, permafrost containing Holocene terrestrial and/or lacustrine OM, and permafrost containing late‐Pleistocene marine‐derived OM. Samples were leached in seawater to compare DOC yields, DOM composition …

In this paper, we present a digital twin approach to the enhancement of traffic signal performance monitoring and congestion identification using automated traffic signal performance measure (ATSPM) systems. The objective of this effort is to use the high-fidelity microscopic simulation engine to generate simulated traffic signal events and connected vehicle data and allow the ATSPM systems to generate various traffic signal measures of effectiveness (MOEs) for a forensic traffic signal evaluation. Real-world ATSPM systems are driven by the traffic signal logs generated during operations. Therefore, they are primarily applied to traffic signal operations in the field. However, traffic signal design …
