Failure To Communicate: A Method To Improve Osha And Fsis Collaboration In Meat And Poultry Plants, Ty Haralson
Journal of Food Law & Policy
In its 2024 annual report, the GAO recognized the overlapping functions of the Occupational Safety and Health Administration (“OSHA”) and the Food Safety and Inspection Service (“FSIS”) in meat and poultry plants and how the two agencies have failed to effectively collaborate. Although both FSIS and OSHA have vested interests in ensuring healthy environments in meat and poultry plants, the administrative agencies have not developed a thorough approach for collaboration.
Created after the passage of the Williams-Steiger Occupational Safety and Health Act of 1970, OSHA’s primary responsibility is to “ensur[e] safe and healthful working conditions . . . ” in …

Ghosts Of Agri-Food Policy: The Lost Years Of Jamie L. Whitten, 1910-1949, Jonathan Coppess, Bobby J. Smith Ii
Journal of Food Law & Policy
On October 22, 1994, the 103rd United States (“U.S.”) Congress enacted legislation naming the United States Department of Agriculture (“USDA”) headquarters building in honor of U.S. Representative Jamie L. Whitten of Mississippi, a member of the Democratic Party. At the time, he was the longest-serving member of Congress, serving from a special election in November 1941 through his retirement on January 3, 1995. A few months later, Whitten died on September 9, 1995, leaving his name on the only departmental office building on the National Mall in Washington, DC. Etched in stone on the massive, imposing structure with a Roman …
Breaking Down Barriers To Giving: Policy Reform Needed To Protect Donors, Volunteers, And Food Charities, Ally Depriest
Breaking Down Barriers To Giving: Policy Reform Needed To Protect Donors, Volunteers, And Food Charities, Ally Depriest
Journal of Food Law & Policy
Charitable organizations often depend on public support to fulfill their missions. This is especially true in the charitable food system, a network of nonprofit organizations, including food banks, pantries, and meal programs, which provide no-cost food to those in need. Within this system, volunteers, donors, and food charities each play an important role, such as donating surplus food, directing traffic at food drives, stocking local pantries, and preparing and serving meals at soup kitchens. Together, they provide both hope and nutrition to those in need. Without this public support, many food charities would be unable to operate. Encouraging public participation …
The Soil Crisis In Modern Food Systems: Rethinking Agricultural Land Use, Antonia Moure Richard
The Soil Crisis In Modern Food Systems: Rethinking Agricultural Land Use, Antonia Moure Richard
Journal of Food Law & Policy
Feeding a larger world while preserving the resource that makes agriculture possible—soil—poses a governance problem. By 2050, food systems must support 9.8 billion people even as prevailing practices continue to degrade soils that are non-renewable on human timescales. Technological fixes (e.g., vertical farming, hydroponics) may complement production, but they cannot substitute for soil at scale. The question that follows is simple: are current uses of soil compatible with the future needs of food systems? This article argues that without a shift in governance, short-run productivity gains are achieved by drawing down the soil asset, thereby undermining long-run food security and …

Closing The Gaps: Reforming Maryland Controls On Veterinary Antimicrobial Distribution, Samantha Capaldo, Kerry Mcclaughry
Closing The Gaps: Reforming Maryland Controls On Veterinary Antimicrobial Distribution, Samantha Capaldo, Kerry Mcclaughry
Journal of Food Law & Policy
Antimicrobials have been used in livestock and other food animals in the United States (“U.S.”) since the late 1940s. An antimicrobial is “[a]ny natural, synthetic, or semisynthetic substance that can eradicate or prevent the growth of microbes,” including “[a]ntibacterial, antifungal, antiparasitic, and antiviral medications.” Antimicrobial use in food animals is subject to a complex statutory and regulatory framework at both the state and federal levels. Antimicrobial use in food animals has been widely criticized for contributing to antimicrobial-resistant bacterial infections in humans. In response to this criticism, the U.S. Food and Drug Administration (“FDA”) and several states, including Maryland, have …

Supersymmetric Quantum Fields Via Quantum Probability, Radhakrishnan Balu
Supersymmetric Quantum Fields Via Quantum Probability, Radhakrishnan Balu
Journal of Stochastic Analysis
The super version of imprimitivity theorem is available now to describe global supersymmetry of systems using the representations of super Lie groups (SLG). This result uses the equivalence between super Harish- Chandra pairs and super Lie groups, at the categorical level, and is applicable to super Poincaré group and generalizes a smooth SI to super context. We apply the result to build supersymmetric quantum fields. Towards this end, we set up a super Fock space of a disjoint union of super Hilbert spaces which is equivalent to super tensoring of boson (even) part symmetrically and that of fermion (odd) part …

Pricing Variance Swaps Using Extended Heston Model, Semere Gebresilasie, Mulue Gebreslasie, Indranil Sengupta
Journal of Stochastic Analysis
Abstract. In this study, we introduce a variance swap for the underlying asset utilizing the Heston model, incorporating a long-term variance that is treated as a stochastic function of time. We develop a closed-form solution for the variance swap under this framework, where the log returns are driven by a compound Poisson process. Our analysis of historical data reveals that long-term variance is not constant; instead, it fluctuates over time, reflecting market dynamics more accurately. By integrating this time-varying long-term variance into the model, we achieve an improvement in prediction performance of approximately 60%. Furthermore, we perform model calibration using …

Assessment Of Dihedral Angle Contribution To Roll-Stability Derivatives Using Datcom And Vlm Methods, Tarik Hassan Elsonni, Emad Qasem Hussein, Balsam H. Abed
Al-Farahidi Expert Systems Journal
This study investigates the lateral stability of a fixed-wing aircraft through the roll-moment stability derivative (C_lβ ), treated as the primary indicator of dihedral effect and overall roll stability. A coupled DATCOM-based analytical formulation and lifting-line/VLM modeling framework has been used to quantify the influence of the key geometric and aerodynamic parameters on the roll-stability derivative. Specifically, the influences of dihedral angle, angle of attack, and sideslip have been explored separately, followed by geometric factors such as aspect ratio, taper ratio, and sweep angle in a systematic way. It is observed that there is an increase in the dihedral angle …

Connectivity and data delivery latency in vehicular networks are strongly affected by the high dynamism of vehicular traffic, which depend on many random factors. Under the inevitable constraints imposed by road paths and free-flowing vehicular traffic conditions (e.g., low to medium vehicle density, high mobility, high speeds), these networks suffer from fast topology variations that lead to frequent disconnections. Consequently, communications experience increased data delivery latency. Establishing a connection between source and destination vehicles depends heavily on vehicle density along the road. UAV assistance becomes more necessary as vehicle density along the road decreases. Moreover, when a road segment is …

Strengthening reinforced concrete (RC) elements is vital to rehabilitate aging infrastructure and adopting modern standards. While conventional designs focus on axial, shear, and bending forces, torsional moments become highly effective in specific beams. This study employs finite element analysis using ABAQUS to investigate effective strengthening strategies for enhancing the torsional performance of RC beams. Two strengthening systems, ferrocement and Textile Reinforced Mortar (TRM), were examined using two-sided and three-sided wrapping configurations. The numerical investigation evaluated torsional capacity, twist response, and crack propagation, with results compared to an unstrengthened control beam. The findings indicate that both strengthening techniques significantly improved stiffness …

Solving Some Heat Problems In The Sense Of The Non-Conformable Fractional Derivative By Using Modified Fourier Transform, Sami Injrou, Wadii Ali
Solving Some Heat Problems In The Sense Of The Non-Conformable Fractional Derivative By Using Modified Fourier Transform, Sami Injrou, Wadii Ali
Al-Farahidi Expert Systems Journal
In this paper, we present two new concepts in Fourier analysis: the Fourier series and the Fourier transform in the sense of non-conformable fractional calculus. Some of their main properties are proven. Using this new Fourier series, new approximations of some functions are given, a frequency spectrum of a signal is plotted, and several cases of the heat equations involving the time non-conformable fractional derivative are solved and graphically presented. Furthermore, the introduced new Fourier transform is used to solve a homogeneous space-time non-conformable fractional heat equation.

Two-phase fluid flow is widely encountered in petroleum, chemical, nuclear, and energy applications. Computational fluid dynamics (CFD) by ANSYS Fluent 17.2 has been employed in this work to simulate the rise of a single air bubble through stagnant water at different temperatures (0 °C, 25 °C, and 50 °C). In addition, a user-defined function(UDF)was developed and implemented to incorporate phase-change behavior and temperature-dependent properties. This study investigates how the buoyancy-driven bubble dynamics will be responsive to changes in liquid viscosity, surface tension, and density. The results demonstrated that increasing the temperature of water enhances the bubble rise velocity significantly; the …
