“It Is The Greatest Shame In The World”: Tomás Cerdán De Tallada’S Pioneering Analysis And Critiques Of Jails In The Spanish Golden Age, Riley Emerson Carney Jan 2025

“It Is The Greatest Shame In The World”: Tomás Cerdán De Tallada’S Pioneering Analysis And Critiques Of Jails In The Spanish Golden Age, Riley Emerson Carney

Undergraduate Theses, Professional Papers, and Capstone Artifacts

During the 16th century, prisons as we know them did not exist in Spain nor in most of Western Europe. Jails, as a temporary place to hold criminals before their trial, did exist but were quickly filling up with a wave of new criminals and debtors. This system of jails was poorly organized and poorly understood until Tomás Cerdán de Tallada wrote his treatise Visita de la carcel, which was the first in Spain to analyze the system of jails as a whole, and one of the first to offer criticisms of the system. Core to Cerdán’s understanding …

‘Who’S Your Daddy?’: Ddradseq Parentage In Broodstock-Offspring Pairs Of Diadema Antillarum In A Population Restoration Initiative, Bianca R. Rosendahl

Undergraduate Scholarship and Creative Works

In the early 1980s Diadema antillarum, or the long-spined urchin, was hit by a catastrophic mass mortality event across the western Atlantic and Gulf of Mexico, inclusive of the Florida Keys. The cause of this die-off event was likely triggered by a pathogen or environmental stressor that decimated native populations by up to 98%. The species has not yet fully recovered and is struggling with recruitment success which is why it may benefit from an ex-situ recovery program. In this study, I used single nucleotide polymorphisms (SNPs) to identify genetic variation and analyze parentage in a captive population of …

Undergraduate Scholarship and Creative Works

This paper explores the intersection of digital inequity and biomedical healthcare access in the United States, positioning the digital divide as a structural determinant of health. As telehealth and digital platforms become central to care delivery, communities lacking broadband infrastructure, digital literacy, and affordable internet access face compounded barriers to equitable healthcare. The study introduces five critical dimensions—access, availability, adequacy, acceptability, and affordability—as a framework for addressing these disparities. It proposes the Rhizomatic Digital Ecosystem Framework to guide national and local interventions, emphasizing the need for public investment in broadband expansion, digital education, and affordability programs. By treating digital access …

Chronically Online: Apportioning Liability In Social Media Litigation Based On User Engagement, Rebecca Vangelos Jan 2025

Chronically Online: Apportioning Liability In Social Media Litigation Based On User Engagement, Rebecca Vangelos

Fordham Law Review

The average American teenager spends nearly five hours on social media every day. This result is by design: social media platforms like Instagram, Snapchat, and TikTok deploy persuasive technologies—including infinite scroll, personalized content recommendation feeds, and dark patterns—to capture and retain teen attention. These intentional design features exploit adolescent vulnerabilities to foster social media dependency. Accordingly, a growing body of scientific evidence links the extensive use of social media to the teen mental health crisis in the United States.

Despite these negative effects, social media companies have largely evaded accountability for the harm they have caused to teens. Recent lawsuits …

Writing Back To Empire: Anticolonial Petitioning And Decolonisation In Postwar British West Africa, 1945–1960, Bright Alozie Jan 2025

Writing Back To Empire: Anticolonial Petitioning And Decolonisation In Postwar British West Africa, 1945–1960, Bright Alozie

Black Studies Faculty Publications and Presentations

This article reexamines petition writing as a strategic form of anticolonial resistance and negotiation in British West Africa between 1945 and 1960. Focusing on Nigeria and the Gold Coast (now Ghana), it argues that petitions – often regarded as apolitical or ineffective – were in fact deeply political texts through which colonised individuals asserted rights, challenged imperial authority, and participated in shaping decolonisation discourse. Drawing on new archival petitions, colonial correspondence, and administrative records, the study analyzes how a wide range of African actors – including trade unions, veterans, women’s organisations, and youth groups – appropriated colonial bureaucratic norms to …

Electronic Theses and Dissertations

This thesis examines how Guelel Kumba, a Senegalese Fulani griot, chef, and musician currently residing in Oxford, Mississippi, incorporates West African cuisine and music into his daily life in the South. This profile study asks: How does Kumba's performances and cooking translate Fulani heritage into Mississippi's blues and soul-food scenes? The research employed observation, secondary sources, purposeful semi-structured interviews, and a documentary.

Kumba views tradition as an arsenal, preserving its essential rhythms and flavors while reworking family recipes and tunes to suit local tastes. Customers can eat, listen, and interact their way into shared history at his food truck and …

The Mathematical Struggle: A Peer’S Review Of Mathematics Education, Joshua Brobst Jan 2025

The Mathematical Struggle: A Peer’S Review Of Mathematics Education, Joshua Brobst

All Student Scholarship

This paper explores the perceived bias against the mathematics (math) discipline. Specifically, it will explore the concept of math anxiety (MA) and why the broad idea of the apparent negativity towards math is so pervasive. The paper does so through two different avenues; the first approach being a literature review of the data and arguments from psychology and math education journals that have been previously published. The second method provided is one performed specifically for this thesis in which data from a University of Southern Maine (USM) MAT 100 course was collected from student responses submitted at the end of …

Immature (Data) Privacy, Yutang Hsiao Jan 2025

Immature (Data) Privacy, Yutang Hsiao

Buffalo Law Review

Sharenting, a combination of the words “sharing” and “parenting,” is a double-edged sword. It can cut both ways because even though it benefits parents by being a source of support and fostering community, it harms children in various significant and nuanced ways. While the world blames parents for sharing too much of their children’s data on social media, other actors also play a role and should share the blame. In this Article, I argue that the most fundamental question sharenting raises is in what ways children’s privacy is violated, and who commits the violation. Social media, as one of the …

The Role Of Communication In Environmental Awareness According To Circular Economy Stakeholders, Alejandro Carbonell-Alcocer, Juan Romero-Luis, Manuel Gertrudix

Artículos científicos

In order to make the transition from a linear to a circular economy, unprecedented measures are required from all social actors. Communication plays a fundamental role in this transition. The use of social marketing as an alternative to traditional communication models can promote the paradigm shift in order to increase communicative effectiveness. Understanding the perception of circular economy drivers is crucial for communication efforts aimed at persuading citizens to change their habits. To this end, this study analyzes drivers’ perceptions of communication processes aimed at environmental awareness and sensitization. Using grounded theory, a qualitative methodology, 44 interviews were conducted with …

The Effectiveness Of The Hague Convention In Addressing International Child Abduction, Areej A. Dakelallah Althubiti

Theses and Dissertations

Parental child abduction is a growing concern fueled by immigration, cross-cultural marriages, evolving family dynamics, and gaps in the implementation and enforcement of developed international frameworks. This study examines the effectiveness of and challenges to the enforcement of the Hague Convention on the Civil Aspects of International Child Abduction (HCCA), which was developed to address this problem. Specifically, the goal of this research is to assess the effect the HCCA has had on parental kidnapping, analyze its effectiveness in resolving international custody disputes, and identify the legal and practical obstacles that inhibit implementation. While the prevalence of parental kidnapping continues …

Provider-Patient Alliance And Trauma Among Pregnant Patients With Opioid Use Disorder, Molly Doernberg Jan 2025

Provider-Patient Alliance And Trauma Among Pregnant Patients With Opioid Use Disorder, Molly Doernberg

Yale Medicine Thesis Digital Library

The goal of this project was to compare the provider-patient relationship among pregnant patients with opioid use disorder (OUD) who did or did not have a history of moderate to severe trauma. The hypothesis was that patients with a trauma history would self-report worse relationships with their providers. This was an exploratory analysis of data from 169 patients enrolled in the Support Models for Addiction Related Treatment (SMART) trial. Trauma history, defined as probable post-traumatic stress disorder (PTSD), was determined by a score ≥31 on the PTSD Checklist for DSM-5 (PCL-5). The provider-patient relationship, collected at 26±4 weeks of pregnancy, …

From Clinic To Court: Feminist Organizing And The Fight For Birth Control In Griswold V. Connecticut, Lynn Q. Lee

Kaplan Senior Essay Prize for Use of Library Special Collections

In 1961, Planned Parenthood League of Connecticut (PPLC) Director Estelle Griswold and Yale School of Medicine Department of Obstetrics and Gynecology Chair Dr. Charles Lee Buxton were arrested. Charged with opening an illegal birth control clinic in New Haven, the two embarked on a four-year battle to overturn Connecticut’s decades-old anti-birth control law. The resulting Supreme Court case, Griswold v. Connecticut (1965), was the culmination of decades of advocacy, coalition building, and cultural conflict over reproductive rights in one of the nation’s most restrictive states.

Griswold v. Connecticut established the constitutional right to marital privacy, creating the protection needed for …

Sci Peer Mentoring & Community Engagement: A Review, Caitlyn Menard Jan 2025

Sci Peer Mentoring & Community Engagement: A Review, Caitlyn Menard

Student Research Design & Innovation Symposium

Each year, about 250,000 to 500,000 individuals sustain a spinal cord injury (SCI), resulting in decreased social participation and diminished societal engagement. This diminished quality of life hinders a person’s ability to fulfill societal roles (Beauchamp et al., 2016). Sustaining an SCI leads to a loss of performance skills and restricts the ability to participate in meaningful activities as one could prior to the injury (Beauchamp et al., 2016). The current standard of care indicates that individuals with an SCI engage in rehabilitation services and receive training from skilled clinicians and peers living with an SCI. Community-dwelling individuals with SCI …

Background: Emerging evidence suggests that there are morphological and physiological changes to the vastus lateralis after an anterior cruciate ligament (ACL) tear. However, it is unclear whether these alterations are limited to just the vastus lateralis or are more representative of widespread changes across the thigh musculature and/or if these changes precede reconstruction. The purpose of this study was to determine T1ρ relaxation time, a measure of extracellular matrix organization in muscle, and physiological cross-sectional area (PCSA) for muscles of the quadriceps and hamstrings of the ACL-deficient and contralateral limbs soon after ACL injury.

Methods: T1ρ and diffusion …

Active lower-body exoskeleton devices can decrease the energy requirement of the human body by providing mechanical assistance to lower-body muscles. However, they also alter gait kinematics and kinetics, and it is not well understood whether such alterations are detrimental or beneficial to the human body. In this pilot study, we investigated the impact of walking with an ankle exoskeleton device on the biomechanics of men while carrying a heavy load. We collected computed tomography images and motion-capture data for five young, healthy men who walked 5 km (∼60 min) with a 22.7-kg load, with and without an active ankle exoskeleton …
