(Missed) Opportunities To Build Solidarity: A Critical Analysis Of Spanish-English Bilingual Children’S Books, Claudia Rodriguez-Mojica, Allison Briceño Jan 2025

(Missed) Opportunities To Build Solidarity: A Critical Analysis Of Spanish-English Bilingual Children’S Books, Claudia Rodriguez-Mojica, Allison Briceño

Faculty Research, Scholarly, and Creative Activity

Two-way dual language (TWDL) programs have traditionally served white and non-Black Latinx students, with limited attention to other cultures and races. This limitation can result in the erasure of Afro-Latinx culture from bilingual programs. This study explores the ways Black characters are represented in bilingual picturebooks, which can serve to perpetuate or combat anti-blackness within bilingual education. We completed a critical content analysis of Spanish-English bilingual picturebooks that include Black or Afro-Latinx characters, employing LatCrit and BlackCrit theoretical frameworks to explore how Black characters are positioned. Findings show a significant dearth of bilingual books that include Black or Afro-Latinx characters. …

Disrupted Relatedness And Shifting Perceptions Of Others: Changing Moods Over Time For People Diagnosed With Bipolar Disorder, Joanna Farr, Jonathan A. Smith, John E. Rhodes Jan 2025

Disrupted Relatedness And Shifting Perceptions Of Others: Changing Moods Over Time For People Diagnosed With Bipolar Disorder, Joanna Farr, Jonathan A. Smith, John E. Rhodes

The Qualitative Report

For people diagnosed with bipolar disorder, the relationship between mood episodes and interpersonal life is critical. Yet little is known about how their experience of other people changes during and between episodes of depression and mania. This longitudinal study aimed to investigate the experience of interpersonal change during depression, mania and euthymia (stability). Semi-structured interviews were conducted with three women at two time points and were analysed using longitudinal interpretative phenomenological analysis. One longitudinal theme, “Changing sense of others impacts relatedness,” demonstrates profound changes in participants’ experiences of other people within and between episodes. During depression, participants experienced other people …

How Research Into Citizenship Education At University Might Enable Transformative Human Rights Education, Piers Von Berg Jan 2025

How Research Into Citizenship Education At University Might Enable Transformative Human Rights Education, Piers Von Berg

School of Law, Humanities and Social Sciences

This article presents a new research design for pedagogical research at university. The design demonstrates how personal and cultural citizenship education can be a form of transformative human rights education by nurturing citizens who challenge patterns of exclusion. It draws on shared traditions of citizenship and human rights education that have focused on lived experiences of injustice and uses spaces that mitigate prevailing power structures. These ideas have shaped a new pedagogical action research design that uses theories and practices of transformational learning, authentic reflection, and participatory theatre to stimulate ‘becomings’ in civic identity and agency. ‘Becoming’ is a form …

Letter To The Editor—Suzanne Rumsey, Suzanne Rumsey Jan 2025

Letter To The Editor—Suzanne Rumsey, Suzanne Rumsey

Journal of Amish and Plain Anabaptist Studies

Dear Editor, I wish to respond to G. C. Waldrep’s review of my book, Blessed are the Peacemakers: Small Histories during World War II, Letter Writing, and Family History Methodology, which offers criticism without also highlighting the book’s merits. As a counterpoint to the review, I’d like to tell JAPAS readers some positives in the book they might find interesting and valuable. My field is composition and rhetoric, so the book is written with that academic discipline in mind first; however, because of the subject matter, others beyond this field and even nonacademic readers may find it both engaging and …

Review Of: Born Amish: Life Before The Ex-Communication—Ann Stoltzfus Taylor, Amy Schlabach Jan 2025

Review Of: Born Amish: Life Before The Ex-Communication—Ann Stoltzfus Taylor, Amy Schlabach

Journal of Amish and Plain Anabaptist Studies

The account begins on the night of the author’s birth. Ann Stoltzfus Taylor was the first child born to her parents, Gid and Lizzie Stoltzfus, a well-known Amish couple living near Intercourse, Pennsylvania. Stoltzfus Taylor gives us a brief history of the home she grew up in, as well as introducing us to her family. Various aunts, uncles, and grandparents are described, along with memories associated with each person. She writes about her great-grandfather, nicknamed “Wild Gid,” who apparently was not a model Amishman. The chapter ends with a few stories of tragedies and stories of fun and bonding with …

Review Of: A Road Less Travelled; Going Back To My Roots; And Traveling Solo But Never Alone—Christopher Petrovich, Robert Alexander, Danny Kohlar, Darrell Yoder Jan 2025

Review Of: A Road Less Travelled; Going Back To My Roots; And Traveling Solo But Never Alone—Christopher Petrovich, Robert Alexander, Danny Kohlar, Darrell Yoder

Journal of Amish and Plain Anabaptist Studies

People that are interested in joining the Amish or Mennonites are often referred to as “seekers.” And such they are, though in a sense we are all seekers, looking for that better country. It is a mistake to think that all seekers are the same, for their personalities, motivations, and “position on the road” are all different. [First paragraph.]

Review Of: The Flow Of The Big Spring: Three Centuries Of Native Americans, Welsh, Amish, And Mennonites On The Big Spring Farm In Lancaster County, Pennsylvania—Romaine Stauffer, Susan Burkholder Jan 2025

Review Of: The Flow Of The Big Spring: Three Centuries Of Native Americans, Welsh, Amish, And Mennonites On The Big Spring Farm In Lancaster County, Pennsylvania—Romaine Stauffer, Susan Burkholder

Journal of Amish and Plain Anabaptist Studies

Can the story of a farm tell the story of a community? The Flow of the Big Spring follows the Big Spring Farm through its history as a gathering spot for Native Americans, a Mennonite family farm, and now, a living history museum in New Holland, Pennsylvania. [First paragraph.]

Review Of: Women Talking [Film]—Sarah Polley, Rebecca Janzen Jan 2025

Review Of: Women Talking [Film]—Sarah Polley, Rebecca Janzen

Journal of Amish and Plain Anabaptist Studies

Women Talking (directed by Sarah Polley) is a film that was released in 2022 and is based on Miriam Toews’ 2018 novel of the same name. Both the film and the novel are, in turn, based on events that took place in the early 2000s in Manitoba Colony, Bolivia, where Old Colony Mennonite men raped and assaulted women and girls in their own community. This review contextualizes the movie by explaining Old Colony Mennonite beliefs, religious practices, and migrations, and then it summarizes the film and offers some thoughts about outsiders’ fascination with the film. [First paragraph.]

Review Of: Fooling With The Amish: Amish Mafia, Entertaining Fakery, And The Evolution Of Reality Tv—Dirk Eitzen, Stewart M. Hoover Jan 2025

Review Of: Fooling With The Amish: Amish Mafia, Entertaining Fakery, And The Evolution Of Reality Tv—Dirk Eitzen, Stewart M. Hoover

Journal of Amish and Plain Anabaptist Studies

In a way, this book takes on a rather banal and straightforward task: a scholarly account of the very curious phenomenon known as “Amish Reality Television.” This genre is an easy mark for critique by the serious-minded scholar or observer of contemporary religion. These programs, including Amish in the City, Breaking Amish, Return to Amish, and Amish Mafia (there are others) are far from authentic representations of their subject matter, and for anyone who knows much about Amish or Pennsylvania German culture, the poetic license of these productions is obvious. Amish culture and life have always been open to this …

Review Of: Lily Of Appalachia Series: Under The Bridge (2017), Under Fire (2018), And Under The Juniper Tree (2019)—Emily Steiner, Pete Kauffman Jan 2025

Review Of: Lily Of Appalachia Series: Under The Bridge (2017), Under Fire (2018), And Under The Juniper Tree (2019)—Emily Steiner, Pete Kauffman

Journal of Amish and Plain Anabaptist Studies

The Lily of Appalachia series—the first series by Conservative Mennonite novelist Emily Steiner—is set in the Appalachian coal-mining country of Kentucky and West Virginia. The timeline follows Lily Burchett from schoolgirl to middle years, set in (as close as I could tell) the mid-1920s through the late 1930s. Taken together, the three books, Under the Bridge, Under Fire, and Under the Juniper Tree make a full circle, where the dreams and ambitions of the first book are not realized until the last book. If you read one of these books, you should read all of them. Each book title references …

Review Of: The Mennonites [2nd Ed], Laura Camden

Journal of Amish and Plain Anabaptist Studies

Larry Towell, the first Canadian member of the prestigious photo agency, Magnum Photos, began to photograph and write about power and landlessness after a stint of volunteer work in Calcutta in 1976. In the 1980s, he photographed the Nicaraguan Contra war and the relatives of the disappeared in Guatemala. In 1996, he completed a ten-year reportage on El Salvador which was followed by two books on the Palestinians. His book Afghanistan, 2014, will be followed in 2023 by The History War (Ukraine). Now close to his seventh decade, he remains one of the best and busiest photojournalists in the world. …

Symposium Review: Strictly Observant: Amish And Ultra-Orthodox Jewish Women Negotiating Media [2nd Ed], Emma Rosenberg, Sheila Petre Jan 2025

Symposium Review: Strictly Observant: Amish And Ultra-Orthodox Jewish Women Negotiating Media [2nd Ed], Emma Rosenberg, Sheila Petre

Journal of Amish and Plain Anabaptist Studies

Far too often, female agency within strictly observant religious groups is dismissed. Especially in secular scholarship, the perceived voicelessness of these women remains largely unchallenged. Rivka Neriya-Ben Shahar’s sophisticated and compelling book, Strictly Observant: Amish and Ultra-Orthodox Women Negotiating Media, destroys this superficial and monolithic understanding. Using media consumption as a lens, Neriya-Ben Shahar reveals the pivotal role that Amish and Ultra-Orthodox Jewish women play in safeguarding their communities from the threats of secularism and immorality. [First paragraph.]

Riding The Wave: Tech Tsunami'S Rhetoric Enables Plain Anabaptist Adopters, Cory Anderson Jan 2025

Riding The Wave: Tech Tsunami'S Rhetoric Enables Plain Anabaptist Adopters, Cory Anderson

Journal of Amish and Plain Anabaptist Studies

Arguably, no book has shaped plain Anabaptist discourse about technology more than Gary Miller’s Tech Tsunami. Since its 2016 publication, the book has achieved near-canonical status within certain Conservative and Old Order Anabaptist circles, particularly among business owners wrestling with technology adoption. The book’s influence extends beyond the original text—an audiobook and a youth edition (Tech Talk, 2021) circulate widely, discussion groups form around its ideas, and its vocabulary infiltrates conversations about church rules. The book’s success builds on Miller’s existing platform; his works Kingdom Focused Finances, Church Matters, and Life in a Global Village helped establish him as a …

Symposium Review: Virtually Amish: Preserving Community At The Internet’S Margins—Lindsay Ems, Harry Argo, Dan Raber, Jonathan Stoll Jan 2025

Symposium Review: Virtually Amish: Preserving Community At The Internet’S Margins—Lindsay Ems, Harry Argo, Dan Raber, Jonathan Stoll

Journal of Amish and Plain Anabaptist Studies

Ems’s book, “Virtually Amish,” is a significant contribution to research on Amish survival and how the Amish continue to endure the influence of modernized technological capitalism on their faith, values, and way of life. The underlying questions address not only whether increased exposure to digitization will accelerate their assimilation but, more significantly, how they are able to address such challenges. [First paragraph.]

Symposium Review: Facing Infotainment Technologies: Evolution Beyond Human [2nd Ed], Steven Yoder, Gerald Mast, Karlin High Jan 2025

Symposium Review: Facing Infotainment Technologies: Evolution Beyond Human [2nd Ed], Steven Yoder, Gerald Mast, Karlin High

Journal of Amish and Plain Anabaptist Studies

Daniel Mast offers a very detailed review of the ever-changing world of information technology and entertainment. The book opens by addressing the pleasure and entertainment aspects of technology and later focuses on how technology has become more advanced and has the potential to be used to monitor and control people. The intended audience is the plain Mennonite, Amish, and Brethren people. He writes from the perspective that the Bible is the final authority and cites many Biblical verses to make his case clear; the Bible gives reason for concern about the infotainment flood. As well as the Bible, the author …

Migration, Trauma, And Tweeback: Perspectives On Russian Mennonite Identity In Elina Penner’S Novel Nachtbeeren, Berit Jany

Journal of Amish and Plain Anabaptist Studies

After the dissolution of the Soviet Union in the 1990s, a group of about 2.5 million Russia Germans immigrated to Germany, benefiting from the German law that recognizes citizenship to ethnic Germans who arrived in the territory as late ethnic Germans resettlers. Including their children, this subset of Germany’s population now numbers about 3.5 million, and about 350.000 Russia Germans have a Mennonite background. Of the 500.000 Plautdietsch-speaking people worldwide, about 200,000 of them live in Germany. In her debut novel, Nachtbeeren, the author Elina Penner illuminates the everyday life of German Mennonites from the Soviet Union and the successor …

‘We Wish To Keep A Wall Of Reserve’: Modesty Practice And Discourse Within Old Order Amish And Ultra-Orthodox Jewish Communities, Rivka Neriya Ben-Shahar Jan 2025

‘We Wish To Keep A Wall Of Reserve’: Modesty Practice And Discourse Within Old Order Amish And Ultra-Orthodox Jewish Communities, Rivka Neriya Ben-Shahar

Journal of Amish and Plain Anabaptist Studies

This study advances our understanding of modesty practices within religious groups by examining mixed-gender groups among Old Order Amish in Lancaster County, Pennsylvania, and Ultra-Orthodox Jews in Israel. Through ethnographic participant observation and semi-structured interviews, my research addresses three questions central to understanding modesty practices: How do members of these religious bodies define and enforce acceptable practices of modesty and body management in mixed-gender settings? What mechanisms transmit written and unwritten rules within these groups? And how do religious leaders and texts shape modesty discourse and practices? Drawing on Hobsbawm’s differentiation between old and invented traditions, this comparative analysis reveals …

Amish Shwitzer: An Old Order Contact Language, Anja Hasse, Guido Seiler Jan 2025

Amish Shwitzer: An Old Order Contact Language, Anja Hasse, Guido Seiler

Journal of Amish and Plain Anabaptist Studies

There is relatively little linguistic research on the language spoken by the Swiss Amish community of Adams County, IN. The language is remarkable for various reasons. First, it is a kind of a mixed language with closely related parental languages which has so far not been found elsewhere in the languages of the world. Second, it is an example of a complex linguistic inner-Amish separation. While the convergence of Amish Shwitzer towards Pennsylvania Dutch grammar is caused by intense contact between Swiss and Pennsylvania Dutch-speaking Amish, the retention of Bernese German features inherited by the ancestors of the modern-day Swiss …

A Comparison Of Brief Resistance And Aerobic Exercise Bouts On Cognitive Processing Speed In Young Adults, Jamie Ambriz, Amber M. Shipherd, Robert J. Kowalsky Jan 2025

A Comparison Of Brief Resistance And Aerobic Exercise Bouts On Cognitive Processing Speed In Young Adults, Jamie Ambriz, Amber M. Shipherd, Robert J. Kowalsky

International Journal of Exercise Science

International Journal of Exercise Science 18(4): 119-129, 2025. Research has found even a brief bout of exercise to be beneficial for improving processing speed. However, there is a lack of research directly comparing the effect of exercise modalities on processing speed. The purpose of this study was to compare the effects of a single brief bout of resistance exercise to aerobic exercise on cognitive processing speed in young adults. A total of 29 young adults ranging from 20-34 years of age (22.59±2.86 years) participated in a familiarization session followed by two randomized exercise conditions (aerobic, resistance). Each moderate-intensity exercise condition …

International Journal of Exercise Science

International Journal of Exercise Science 18(2): 107-118, 2025. Adipose tissue stores energy in fat-rich adipocytes, which can produce and release several adipokines and modulate body metabolism. Exercise may induce adipokine production in adipocytes; however, the relationship between the two remains unclear. Few studies have shown the relationship between adipokines and strength training. Thus, we aimed to evaluate the acute and chronic effects of strength training (ST) on urinary adiponectin, leptin, and resistin levels. Twelve untrained young men (23.42 ± 2.67 years) were included in this study. Body composition was evaluated at baseline and after completing of the training protocol using …

Sport Participation Positively Associated With Balance Confidence And Well-Being In Transtibial Amputees, Lucas Hudson, Paolo Sanzo, Carlos Zerpa, Taryn Klarner Jan 2025

Sport Participation Positively Associated With Balance Confidence And Well-Being In Transtibial Amputees, Lucas Hudson, Paolo Sanzo, Carlos Zerpa, Taryn Klarner

International Journal of Exercise Science

International Journal of Exercise Science 17(5): 1663-1678, 2024. Transtibial amputation (TTA) is the removal of the lower leg often resulting in pain, mental health issues, and a more sedentary lifestyle that lacks physical activity (PA). Low balance confidence and other factors related to the physical and psychosocial adaptation to amputation could contribute to why people with TTA actively avoid PA. Studies have investigated lower extremity amputations and barriers to PA in general, but none have focused solely on transtibial amputation and its relationship with PA participation and avoidance habits. To address this issue, 21 participants with TTA (14 male, 6 …

Moving From ‘Managing Stakeholders’ To ‘Managing For Stakeholders’: The Imperative For Responsible Business, Meena Raghunathan, Kara Li Liu

Markets, Globalization & Development Review

Gone are the days when it was accepted that shareholders were the ones for whose benefit business was done, and that the purpose of business was to maximize returns to shareholders. Today, it is universally accepted that a business has to look beyond maximizing profits. It has to take into account the needs all stakeholders, including the environment.

Several frameworks and approaches have been advocated to achieve the objective of optimizing the value of the corporation from multiple angles, including Triple Bottom Line, Responsible Business, Sustainability, Corporate Social Responsibility, etc. At the heart of all these concepts is the issue …

From Cypherpunks To Decentralized Finance: How Crypto-Anarchy Is Redefining Legal And Economic Systems, Alesia Zhuk

Markets, Globalization & Development Review

This article explores the evolution of crypto-anarchy, tracing its origins from the cypherpunk movement to the rise of decentralized finance (DeFi) and its transformative effects on legal and economic systems. Central to crypto-anarchy is the belief in individual empowerment through privacy, financial autonomy, and decentralization, which allows users to bypass traditional intermediaries like banks. While these technologies offer increased freedom and financial inclusion, they also introduce significant risks such as money laundering, tax evasion, and the facilitation of illegal activities, posing challenges to current regulatory frameworks. The article examines the socio-economic implications of decentralization, including both the democratization of finance …
