Impact Of Nature-Based Tourism On Bird Vocalization Rate In The Bajo Del Tigre Reserve, Monteverde, Costa Rica, Abby K. Bressette, Adriana Arias Aguilar

Environmental Studies Publications

Nature-based tourism benefits economies, communities, and conservation initiatives, but it can also have unintended negative effects on wildlife. For birds, vocal communication is essential, yet it can be disrupted by anthropogenic noise. In this study, I used passive recording to examine how human visitation impacts the rate of bird vocalizations in the Bajo del Tigre Reserve in Monteverde, Costa Rica. Overall, bird vocalization rate was not affected by visitation (p > 0.05), but species-specific differences were found. Vocalizations of the lesser greenlet showed no significant change with visitation (p > 0.05). In contrast, the orange-billed nightingale-thrush exhibited a decrease in vocalization rates …

Scalable And Ethical Insider Threat Detection Through Data Synthesis And Analysis By Llms, Haywood Gelman, John Hastings

Research & Publications

Insider threats wield an outsized influence on organizations, disproportionate to their small numbers. This is due to the internal access insiders have to systems, information, and infrastructure. Signals for such risks may be found in anonymous submissions to public web-based job search site reviews. This research studies the potential for large language models (LLMs) to analyze and detect insider threat sentiment within job site reviews. Addressing ethical data collection concerns, this research utilizes synthetic data generation using LLMs alongside existing job review datasets. A comparative analysis of sentiment scores generated by LLMs is benchmarked against expert human scoring. Findings reveal …

Interference With The Democratic Process As Public Nuisance, Richard C. Boldt, Donald G. Gifford Jan 2025

Interference With The Democratic Process As Public Nuisance, Richard C. Boldt, Donald G. Gifford

Faculty Scholarship

This Article argues that the tort of public nuisance provides a vehicle for holding accountable those engaged in antidemocratic conduct. Recent history suggests that neither the criminal justice system nor Constitutional checks and balances are always up to the task. Following the 2020 election, some supporters of President Trump stormed the Capitol to prevent the counting of the electoral votes, tampered with election machines, and intimidated election workers and voters. Depending on the results of the 2024 election, criminal charges against Trump and some of his followers may be dismissed. The Senate failed to convict the President on articles of …

The Health Impact Of Clinical Training On Nursing Students In Cambodia, Felicia Kim Yee, Kimberly Aguilar Mondragon

Nursing | Senior Theses

Background: Clinical training presents significant challenges for nursing students worldwide, particularly evident in developing countries like Cambodia, where these difficulties are intensified by a lack of training, resources, and health issues like stress and fatigue. Many students struggle without adequate guidance, forcing them to navigate complex clinical environments independently. These factors not only impact students’ confidence and academic performance, but also their health and well-being. Through this study, we can gain insight into nursing in a developing country that hasn’t been widely studied, contributing to global nursing research. Purpose: The purpose of this study is to explore the health impact …

Ulcerative colitis (UC) poses significant challenges during pregnancy, affecting both physical and mental health. While the physiological effects of UC during pregnancy are well documented, less is known about its impact on maternal mental health. This study aims to investigate the psychological effects of UC on pregnant women, focusing on stress levels, postpartum depression (PPD) incidence, and the role of multidisciplinary care in improving mental health outcomes.

Objective

The primary objective of this research proposal is to evaluate the psychological impact of UC during pregnancy and determine whether disease activity increases the risk of PPD and stress. A secondary …

Improving Maternal Mental Health: The Role Of Specialized Support For Queer Women With Postpartum Depression, Dan-Tam Pham Jan 2025

Improving Maternal Mental Health: The Role Of Specialized Support For Queer Women With Postpartum Depression, Dan-Tam Pham

Nursing | Senior Theses

Queer women face disproportionately high rates of postpartum depression compared to heterosexual and cisgender individuals. Studies showed that queer women face heightened mental health challenges, including higher rates of depression and anxiety due to factors like discrimination, limited support systems, and negative healthcare experiences. There is a need for culturally competent, LGBTQ+-affirming interventions to improve maternal mental health outcomes; despite the health disparities faced by this population, research on specialized postpartum interventions is limited, revealing gaps in effective mental health care for queer mothers. The key search terms for the articles used in the study included: postpartum depression, queer women, …

Anthropology Publications

While ethnoracial diversity is associated with metropolitan areas in the popular imagination, Latinx people have been moving increasingly into rural spaces during this century. Rural communities often have less infrastructure to adapt to changing linguistic and intercultural circumstances than do their urban counterparts. Following a community needs and assets assessment, the Morris Intercultural Education Initiative (MIEI) was founded in 2013 as a collaboration between the University of Minnesota Morris Clifford J. Benson Center for Community Partnerships, the local Latinx population, and the area school district to address disparities in literacy and academic outcomes and to promote community integration in West …

Pediatric Approaches For Magnetic Resonance Imaging, Ashley Riha Jan 2025

Pediatric Approaches For Magnetic Resonance Imaging, Ashley Riha

Student Research Poster Presentations 2025

Abstract

Pediatric magnetic resonance imaging is often challenging due to the lack of cooperation and the inability to fully understand the expectations required for the examination. Children are often restless and may have difficulty remaining still for a long period of time. This can lead to motion artifacts and compensate diagnostic value. Due to these reoccurring challenges, there are several strategies to help relax the nerves of pediatric patients. Sedatives can be administered to relax the patients and assist in cooperation during the long scanning times. However, sedation safety, dosage, and patient monitoring is essential when administering medication. Alternative approaches …
