Georgia State University Law Review

The Act serves to increase protections for tenants of residential properties in Georgia. Also known as the “Safe at Home Act,” the Act’s main provision requires that all rental residences are fit for human habitation. Additionally, the Act sets a maximum amount for security deposits and gives a tenant that is late on a rental or utility payment three additional days before a landlord may petition a court for an eviction.

Accelerating Biosimilar Market Access: The Case For Allowing Earlier Standing, S. Sean Tu, Rachel Goode, Matthew Turner, Victor Van De Wiele

Biosimilars, which are affordable alternatives to biologic medicines, face delays in market entry due to the current patent litigation framework under the Biologic Price Competition and Innovation Act. Currently, biosimilar manufacturers can only initiate patent litigation to attempt to clear weak and invalid patents after submitting their Biologic License Application to the Food and Drug Administration (FDA), which happens after completing extensive, and costly clinical trials. By contrast, generic drug manufacturers can start litigation earlier due to shorter development times and less stringent clinical requirements, allowing them to launch immediately after the primary patent expires. We propose allowing biosimilars to …

Background

Chronic heavy alcohol drinking may be a modifiable risk factor for Alzheimer’s disease (AD), but studies in rodent AD models more closely mimic chronic moderate alcohol drinking in humans and largely focus on the brain. The role of the liver, which is significantly impacted by chronic heavy alcohol intake, in driving brain changes in alcohol-dependent AD remains unexplored. Our study using intragastric-ethanol feeding, which mimics chronic heavy alcohol intake in humans, in C57BL/6J mice showed significant AD-relevant changes in the brain and liver. Therefore, we aimed to investigate how hepatic changes using this model of chronic heavy drinking drive …

The risk of national food supply disruptions is linked to both domestic production and food imports. But assessments of climate change risks for food systems typically focus on the impacts on domestic production, ignoring climate impacts in supplying regions. Here, we use global crop modeling data in combination with current trade flows to evaluate potential climate change impacts on national food supply, comparing impacts on domestic production alone (domestic production impacts) to impacts considering how climate change impacts production in all source regions (consumption impact). Under 2°C additional global mean warming over present day, our analysis highlights that climate impacts …

“Incline Your Ear To My Cry” (Psalm 88): Walter Brueggemann’S Theology Of Lament In/And The (Post)Pandemic World, Maverick Angelo M. Pelayo

Landas

The COVID-19 pandemic has drastically disrupted the usual course of doing things by which the world and individuals are accustomed, and it continues to do so as many individuals and, five years on, sectors are still reeling from the multi- faceted effects of the pandemic. It is on this account that this contribution seeks to offer the role and relevance of lament when people and communities face various forms of crises. This contribution explores how the practice of lament according to Walter Brueggemann’s theology can be understood, applied, and appropriated in difficult times like this as exemplified in Psalm 88, …

Sumainyo Ang Kapayapaan: Can Peace Be Dispensed? Searching For The Probable Meaning Of The Peace Greeting In The Context Of The Religious Violence In John 20, Rhoneil M. Arevalo

Landas

Sumainyo ang kapayapaan is a formal translation of the peace greeting in John 20. But does the Filipino, specifically the Tagalog translation, capture the intent of the Gospel writer? The evangelist seems to be saying that he intended more than a peace greeting when he employed the phrase " Peace be with you " on three different occasions in the passage as mentioned above. The literary structure of John 20 provides hints that the author is considering other functions for the peace salutations, such as an exhortation to the frightened disciples to be courageous. This perspective is discerned from the …

Hope In The Moment Of Crisis: A Study Of Different Models Of Crisis And Hope In The Bible, Peter Dubovský

Landas

Three models of crisis and hope are examined as representative paradigms of solutions to crisis in the Bible: the divine wrath and reconciliation model, the God of history model, and the prayer model. The elements of ritual, the role of God, and prayer are all necessary dimensions that allow hope to resolve crisis situations.

Elastic Scheduling For Graceful Degradation Of Mixed-Criticality Systems, Zhuoran Sun, Marion Sudvarg, Christopher Gill Jan 2025

Elastic Scheduling For Graceful Degradation Of Mixed-Criticality Systems, Zhuoran Sun, Marion Sudvarg, Christopher Gill

Computer Science Faculty Research & Creative Works

Many mixed-criticality system models drop all jobs of low-criticality tasks when a criticality mode switch occurs, ensuring that high-criticality tasks still can meet their deadlines in the new mode. However, this means that even important low-criticality tasks are discarded, which may not be acceptable in some systems in practice. This paper addresses that distinction between criticality and importance through a new Inelastic Graceful Earliest Deadline First with Virtual Deadlines (IG-EDF-VD) scheme that upon a criticality mode switch only discards the least important low-criticality tasks necessary to ensure feasibility. Moreover, we consider elastic scheduling within our mixed-criticality model (EG-EDF-VD), using compression …

Development Of Interface-Specific Two-Dimensional Vibrational-Electronic (I2d-Ve) Spectroscopy For Vibronic Couplings At Interfaces, Yuqin Qian, Zhi-Chao Huang-Fu, Jesse B. Brown, Yi Rao

Chemistry and Biochemistry Faculty Publications

Bulk 2D electronic–vibrational (2D-EV) and 2D vibrational–electronic spectroscopies (2D-VE) were previously developed to correlate the electronic and vibrational degrees of freedom simultaneously, which allow for the study of couplings between electronic and vibrational transitions in photo-chemical systems. Such bulk-dominated methods have been used to extensively study molecular systems, providing unique information such as coherence sensitivity, molecular configurations, enhanced resolution, and correlated states and their dynamics. However, the analogy of interfacial 2D spectroscopy has fallen behind. Our recent work presented interface-specific 2D-EV spectroscopy (i2D-EV). In this work, we develop interface-specific two-dimensional vibrational–electronic spectroscopy (i2D-VE). The fourth-order spectroscopy is based on a …

Faculty Perceptions Of Academic Advising, Shane C. Hansen Jan 2025

Faculty Perceptions Of Academic Advising, Shane C. Hansen

Walden Dissertations and Doctoral Studies

Academic advising of students by faculty is considered an important component of education at many universities in the United States. However, faculty advisors do not always have input into advisor training and methods of obtaining advising information. Guided by Boyer’s model of scholarship, the purpose of this sequential explanatory mixed-methods research was to study the lack of faculty advisor input into the faculty advising process. Research questions addressed how the university faculty advisors’ responses on the Faculty Survey of Student Engagement (FSSE) Academic Advising module compared to a national sample and how faculty advisors described their perceptions of the advising …

Current dogma assumes that lipid asymmetry in biological membranes is actively maintained and dispensable for cell viability. The inner (cytoplasmic) membrane (IM) of Escherichia coli is asymmetric. However, the molecular mechanism that maintains this uneven distribution is unknown. We engineered a conditionally lethal phosphatidylethanolamine (PE)-deficient mutant in which the presence of cardiolipin (CL) on the periplasmic leaflet of the IM is essential for viability, revealing a mechanism that provides CL on the desired leaflet of the IM. CL synthase (ClsA) flips its catalytic cytoplasmic domain upon depletion of PE to supply nonbilayer-prone CL in the periplasmic leaflet of the IM …

Assessing The Availability Of Adaptive Exercise For Adults With Ambulatory Disability, Erin Cullather, Lauren R. Hersh Jan 2025

Assessing The Availability Of Adaptive Exercise For Adults With Ambulatory Disability, Erin Cullather, Lauren R. Hersh

Cooper Rowan Medical Journal

Background: Adults with an ambulatory disability are at higher risk of obesity and sequalae from obesity than aged-matched adults without disability. Research shows adults with an ambulatory disability are less likely to participate in the recommended 150 minutes of physical activity per week than non-disabledadults. Availability ofadaptive exercise could help increase physical activity participation in adults with ambulatory disability.

Objective: This observational study examines the availability of adaptive exercise programs throughout the United States and determines how it relates to the population of adults with an ambulatory disability.

Methods: Adaptive exercise sites (n=268) were identified via internet searches to form …

Accreditation And Engineering Ethics Education, Shannon M. Chance

Research Outputs: 2025-Present

Over time, individuals and entities within the engineering education community have developed a multifaceted strategy to synchronize global educational practices and performance metrics. This comprehensive approach involves conducting and disseminating educational research (evident throughout this handbook) and implementing research-informed pedagogies in the classroom (exemplified by the teaching methods section). It also includes establishing and aligning accreditation standards internationally – to guide the content and delivery of engineering education, including ethics. Although this section focuses on the accreditation of engineering ethics education (EEE), understanding the overall accreditation system is essential for grasping the ethics component.

Faecal Excretion Of Thorium By Norm Workers, Gregory S. Hewson, Martin Ralph, Marcus Cattani

Research outputs 2022 to 2026

Exposure to thorium-bearing dust in industries handling and processing monazite and other minerals can pose radiological risks to workers. This study aimed to reassess historical faecal bioassay data collected over 10 d from two monazite plant workers using updated biokinetic and dosimetric models. Another objective was to evaluate the feasibility of faecal thorium bioassay for contemporary operations involving naturally occurring radioactive materials (NORM). The retrospective analysis found that the bioassay-derived thorium intakes were significantly higher than those estimated via personal air sampling. The effective dose estimates for the two workers were similar and ranged from 0.95 to 2.40 mSv over …
