Does College Guarantee Economic Mobility?: Incorporating Lost In-Kind Benefits Into The Calculation, Amy S. White
Does College Guarantee Economic Mobility?: Incorporating Lost In-Kind Benefits Into The Calculation, Amy S. White
Publications and Research
Average salaries of college graduates are higher than salaries of those without degrees. However, the experience of graduating and out-earning the income requirements for in-kind or entitlement benefits like Medicaid, public assistance, Supplemental Nutritional Assistance Plan, and/or Section 8 housing vouchers are not taken into consideration in any mobility calculation nor are students prepared to lose their benefits. Teaching at an urban commuter school in a financially disadvantage borough, I have identified a gap in the research literature and supportive services for these low-income students. This opinion piece further describes the problem and highlights areas for future action and research.

Exploring The Contributing Factors To Irregular Migration Towards Sweden Among Eritreans In Egypt, Mohammad Ammar Alhasn
Theses and Dissertations
This thesis provides an understanding of the interplay between individual aspirations, social networks, and policy frameworks to explore the impact of such factors on the mobility of Eritreans from Egypt towards Sweden. Utilizing a qualitative research approach, the study engaged with twenty-four Eritreans through semi-structured interviews to delve into their lived experiences and decision-making processes. The research is underpinned by theoretical frameworks as follows: social network theory, and institutional theory, which collectively inform the analysis of the migratory phenomenon. The findings reveal that the decision to undertake irregular migration is driven by a confluence of factors in Egypt as a …
A Framework To Harmonize Legal Provisions In Infrastructure Ppp Projects In Egypt Funded By Multilateral Development Banks, Menna Elkadi
A Framework To Harmonize Legal Provisions In Infrastructure Ppp Projects In Egypt Funded By Multilateral Development Banks, Menna Elkadi
Theses and Dissertations
Over the last decade, Egypt has witnessed an increase in the number of Public-Private Partnership (PPP) projects, specifically in infrastructure, as a result of the growing interest and popularity of various entities participating in such projects. Public infrastructure systems are no longer thought to be exclusively provided by the government; instead, the private sector’s contribution in the provision of such services is increasing. However, not every PPP program has been equally effective or has made the optimum use of planning and decision-making. The possibility of a project failure as a result of poor risk allocation is increased, if the potential …

Access, Community Capacity, And Socio-Economic Impacts On The Implementation Of Social Forestry Programs In The Perum Perhutani Kph Telawa Working Area, Esa Jati Manunggal Sukma Adhi, Trisni Utami
Masyarakat: Jurnal Sosiologi
Despite increasing interest in social forestry, limited research has explored the interplay between community capacity and access within Indonesia’s Social Forestry Utilization Permit (IPHPS) scheme. This study examines the relationship between community capacity, access, and socio-economic impacts to inform effective policy implementation. Employing a qualitative case study approach, it focuses on a community granted an IPHPS Decree within the Perum Perhutani Forest Management Unit (KPH) Telawa. The findings identify three key dimensions of community capacity: technical capacity (local knowledge and skills), networking capacity (social capital and relationships), and cultural capacity (local wisdom and practices). While legal access to forest permits …

Celebrating Achievements As Digital Rituals Among Indonesian Youth On Social Media, B.J. Sujibto, Malikatun Natiqoh, Kafhaya Nuzulanisa, Saras Wati Widodo
Masyarakat: Jurnal Sosiologi
Youth and social media are increasingly intertwined, as their socio-cultural trajectories accelerate digital connectedness and intensify the contestation of diverse identities. Posting on social media has thus become a ritualized practice. This article explores how Indonesian university students construct identities by sharing achievement stories and success narratives on Instagram. Using qualitative data, it examines the experiences of students who have excelled in academic competitions. The study identifies two key typologies behind such posts. Firstly, personal determinism, aimed at self- reward and self-branding. Secondly, social motivation, focused on inspiring peers and building supportive networks to achieve academic success. These typologies reflect …
Knocking On Gelenbevī’S Door: A First Exploration Of The Epistemological Overcoming Of The Aristotelian Conception Of Metaphysical Modalities In The Thought Of IsmāʿĪl Gelenbevī (D. 1790/1 C.E.), Hisham Fahmy Al-Farrash
Theses and Dissertations
This thesis is a first exploration of the epistemological turn in metaphysical modalities within Arabic philosophy, particularly within its post-classical period (circa 1100 – 1900 C.E.), which is the turn that highlights the Arabic post-classical philosopher’s attempt(s) to overcome the Aristotelian conception of metaphysical modalities. I here focus on some linguistic, philosophical, and theological nuances of this turn, by synoptically comparing the conceptions of metaphysical modalities of Ismāʿīl Gelenbevī (d. 1790/91) and Aristotle (d. circa 322 B.C.) as two points of culmination in their respective tradition’s reflections on modalities, which is the comparison that presents Gelenbevī’s said conception for …

Rethinking Rupture And Continuity: Al-Jarād And Khamāsīn, Two Poetry Magazines Of The Egyptian 1990s, Caroline Benson
Theses and Dissertations
This thesis analyzes two Egyptian poetry magazines, al-Jarād and Khamāsīn, to enrich critical understanding of the Egyptian literary 1990s. It uses The Rules of Art: Genesis and Structure of the Literary Field (Les Règles de l’art: Genèse et structure du champ littéraire), Pierre Bourdieu’s 1992 sociological study of the literary field, as a theoretical framework. Numerous scholars have noted that the “nineties generation” is known for its aversion to politics, ideologies, and collectivities; its rupture with stylistic and thematic conventions of its predecessors; and its turn away from the “major issues” (al-qaḍāyah al-kubrā) of the …
Evaluation Of The Adoption Of World Health Organization 10-Group Classification System For Cesarean Section In Egyptian Hospitals, Reham Dewedar
Evaluation Of The Adoption Of World Health Organization 10-Group Classification System For Cesarean Section In Egyptian Hospitals, Reham Dewedar
Theses and Dissertations
Egypt has seen a significant rise in Cesarean Section (CS) deliveries over the past decade. While CS is a crucial procedure that can save lives when medically indicated, its misuse poses risks to both mothers and infants, including potential mortality. To address this issue, the WHO introduced the 10-Group Classification System (TGCS) in 2015 to standardize CS monitoring, aiming to prevent overuse or underuse of CS and to enable comparisons across health facilities and countries. This tool was introduced in Egypt through a training session conducted by the World Health Organization (WHO) in 2021.This study examines the effectiveness of this …
Determinants Of Physicians' Brain Drain In Egypt, Mennatallah Elbeheiry
Determinants Of Physicians' Brain Drain In Egypt, Mennatallah Elbeheiry
Theses and Dissertations
Egypt is enduring a significant shortage of physicians, despite the annual graduation of approximately 10,000 medical students from its 27 medical schools. In 2016, the physician density was alarmingly low, with only one doctor per 12,285 people. This shortage is exacerbated by a physicians’ brain drain, as Egypt is a leading exporter of physicians to countries like the United Kingdom and Australia. As of 2020, the Egyptian Medical Syndicate reported 212,835 registered physicians, yet 56 percent of them work abroad, and only about 62,000 are actively employed in public hospitals, serving a population of over 110 million. The government’s efforts …

The healthcare industry is a field undergoing huge development. Focused on SDG 3 “Good Health and Well-being”, the healthcare industry, as the main health service provider, was marked by experts as a sector that should lead sustainable development by example. The current work aims to formulate a sustainability rating system for new and existing healthcare facilities to encourage the Egyptian healthcare industry to move towards sustainability according to net zero concepts. Additionally, the transition to net zero waste is investigated though experimental work to test the possibility of utilizing sterilized medical waste in cement-based bricks.
The rating system starts with …

Connecting To The Sea: A Place-Based Study Of The Potential Of Digital Engagement To Foster Marine Citizenship, Katharine Willis, Ashita Gupta
School of Art, Design and Architecture
The Sustainable Development Goals for creating sustainable, resilient cities and addressing human impacts upon coastal waters and marine environments create a mandate for coastal cities to empower local communities to value city seascapes. One key way to achieve this is through more inclusive pathways to connect to the sea using participatory methods. This research used a participatory co‐design approach in Plymouth—the UK’s first national marine park—to explore the potential for place‐based digital engagement to connect people with the sea, especially for deprived neighbourhoods. We sought to answer the research question of whether place‐based digital technologies can engage communities with marine …

NS309 (6,7-dichloro-1H-indole-2,3-dione-3-oxime) is widely used as a pharmacological tool to increase the activity of small- and intermediate-conductance calcium-activated potassium channels. NS309 is assumed to function as a positive allosteric gating modulator. However, its binding site and the molecular details of its action remain unknown. Here, we show that NS309 has a profound effect on the calcium-dependent gating of the intermediate-conductance Ca2+-activated K+ channel KCa3.1. Tubular adenomas in the breast are uncommon neoplasms. Few examples have been documented. In women of reproductive age, the tumors are typically described as palpable, well-circumscribed lumps. Fibroadenomas are the most common diagnosis, both clinically and radiographically. For diagnosis and to stop the growth from continuing, surgery is necessary. Histopathology of tubular adenoma shows bilayer tubules with an intervening stroma. It is often a small, benign breast tumor that may be nodular. We describe rare tumor cases here that had peculiar appearances.

Squamous cell carcinoma (SCC) of the renal pelvis is an uncommon tumor typically linked to chronic renal stone disease. This tumor is inherently aggressive and generally associated with a poor prognosis. We present a case involving a patient with retroperitoneal descending colon perforation in advanced squamous cell carcinoma of kidney probably secondary to radiation. Radiation-induced gastrointestinal perforation necessitates emergency surgery, and there is a lack of high-quality evidence to support the effectiveness of any preventive measures. In this review, we provide an overview of the clinical manifestations, risk factors, mechanisms, and treatments associated with radiation-induced gastrointestinal perforation. A thorough treatment …

Pituitary stalk interruption syndrome is extremely uncommon, with a 0.5 in 1 million estimated frequency. Growth retardation is typically caused by a lack of growth hormones, which is usually present in the first ten years of life. The case in question involves a 9-year-old boy who presented to OPD with a growth delay. Further investigations supported the diagnosis of a posterior pituitary hormone deficiency based on the biochemical profile. His brain was scanned using magnetic resonance imaging (MRI), which revealed a T1 hyperintense concentration at the median eminence in the middle of his brain but no signs of the anterior …
