Urban Expansion And Loss Of Watershed Of Eleyele Dam In Ibadan, Nigeria, Samson A. Adejumo, Solomon Osunwale
Urban Expansion And Loss Of Watershed Of Eleyele Dam In Ibadan, Nigeria, Samson A. Adejumo, Solomon Osunwale
CSID Journal of Infrastructure Development
The study examined human activities contributing to the depletion of the Eleyele watershed. The activities have grown over time due to urban expansion through population growth and land and space requirements, resulting in rapid land use and land cover change. The study sourced both quantitative and qualitative data. A total of 247 pre-tested questionnaires were administered to randomly selected residents in the four communities (Eleyele, Ijokodo, Awotan, and Idi Osan) abutting the Eleyele watershed. In-depth interviews were conducted with the heads of Eleyele Waterworks, the Forestry Department, and the Oyo State Ministry of Agriculture and Natural Resources. We used Remote …

Navigating Murky Waters: State-Level Strategies For Wetland Preservation And Tile Drainage Regulation After Sackett V. Epa, Caleb M. Swanson
Honors Thesis
Wetlands are some of the world’s most valuable ecosystems, serving as provisioners of species habitat, carbon sequestration, flood mitigation, water quality purification, and other ecosystem services. Human development has resulted in substantial wetland loss the world over. In the 1970s, the United States Congress passed the Clean Water Act, giving the EPA broad authority over wetland protection. However, in the summer of 2023, the United States Supreme Court decided Sackett v. EPA, limiting the EPA’s jurisdiction over wetlands to those indistinguishably connected to generally recognized “Waters of the United States” and removing federal protection for millions of acres of wetlands, …

Climate change will shape the future of Russia, and vice versa, regardless of who rules in the Kremlin. The world's largest country is warming faster than Earth as a whole, occupies more than half the Arctic Ocean coastline, and is waging a carbon-intensive war while increasingly isolated from the international community and its efforts to reduce greenhouse gas emissions. Officially, the Russian government argues that, as a major exporter of hydrocarbons, Russia benefits from maintaining global reliance on fossil fuels and from climate change itself, because warming may increase the extent and quality of its arable land, open a new …
Separate, Sovereign, And Subjugated: Native Citizenship And The 1790 Trade And Intercourse Act, Bethany Berger
Separate, Sovereign, And Subjugated: Native Citizenship And The 1790 Trade And Intercourse Act, Bethany Berger
William & Mary Law Review
In 1790, the same year Congress limited naturalization to “free white persons,” it also enacted the first Indian Trade and Intercourse Act. The Trade and Intercourse Act may have even stronger claims to “super statute” status than the Naturalization Act. Key provisions of the Trade and Intercourse Act remain in effect today, and the Act enshrined a tribal, federal, and state relationship that profoundly shapes modern law. Unlike the Naturalization Act, the Trade and Intercourse Act reflected the input of people of color: it responded to the demands of tribal nations and—to a degree—reflected tribal sovereignty. While Indigenous people could …

2020-Current year OA Pubs
IMPORTANCE: Interstate gun flow has critical implications for gun violence prevention, as gun transfers across state lines can undermine local gun control policies.
OBJECTIVE: To identify possible gun trafficking routes along interstate highways in the US.
DESIGN, SETTING, AND PARTICIPANTS: This repeated-measures, ecological, cross-sectional study used data from the Bureau of Alcohol, Tobacco, Firearms and Explosives from January 1, 2010, to December 31, 2019, to examine associations between interstate connections via 13 highways that each spanned at least 1000 miles and interstate traced gun transfer counts for the 48 contiguous United States. Analyses were completed in November 2023.

Decision-Making Effect: Development Investment Initiatives For Marginalized Communities. A Case Study Of Damietta Furniture City (Dfc), Shata Region, Riham Salah Mohamed
Journal of Engineering Research
Urban forms emerged in many unplanned locations as a result of the phenomenon of chaotic urban expansion brought on by population growth and without restrictions, which led to the existence of neglected slum areas that became marginalized and were not subject to the planned and studied urban. These regions are characterized by economy, social and environmental decline. This is what made the state turn to creating important investment projects next to some of these areas as an attempt to develop those areas, solve their problems, and help in their growth and development.
This article examines the extent to which development …

‘You Have To Respect The Water’: Participant Experiences Of Appreciating And Managing The Risks Associated With Open Water Swimming – A Rapid Ethnographic Study, Mark A. Christie, David Elliott
International Journal of Aquatic Research and Education
Open water swimming (OWS) has rapidly grown in popularity, driven by the purported health benefits of cold-water immersion. A paucity of research remains specifically considering the notable risks inherent in OWS participation, and a lack of qualitative research on freshwater swimming experiences, and safety-related issues therein. This rapid ethnographic study, based at a dedicated OWS lake in the UK, conducted semi-structured interviews with OWS participants (n=17; female=11, male=6). Two core themes emerged: environmental issues impacting OWS experiences and behaviours; and knowledge and education of OWS which highlighted safe/unsafe practices, levels of education for managing risks, personal preparedness, swimming solo/with others, …

Among The Rarest: Saving The Eastern North Pacific Right Whale, Elza Bouhassira
Among The Rarest: Saving The Eastern North Pacific Right Whale, Elza Bouhassira
Alaska Law Review
The North Pacific Right Whale (NPRW) is perhaps the rarest, most endangered large whale species in the world. Only about thirty surviving individuals make up the eastern population, which lives in waters around Alaska. This note aims to highlight the crisis facing eastern NPRWs and the steps that can be taken to support the recovery of this rare whale. The paper first presents information on the history of the species and its importance. It next examines existing international and domestic U.S. legal regimes as well as a pending petition to revise NPRW critical habitat off of Alaska. Finally, it advances …
We're Gonna Need A Bigger Boat: The Importance Of Increased Shark Conservation Across Countries, States, And The High Seas, Emma Shahabi
We're Gonna Need A Bigger Boat: The Importance Of Increased Shark Conservation Across Countries, States, And The High Seas, Emma Shahabi
Duke Environmental Law & Policy Forum
Sharks serve invaluable roles as apex predators in the world's ocean ecosystems. However, the rise of the shark fin trade and incidental bycatch have drastically eliminated shark populations so that several species are close to extinction. Without substantial upgrades to existing international frameworks including CITES, CMS, and IPOA-Sharks, and regulatory bodies such as RFMOs, shark populations may pass beyond recovery. However, strengthening those regulations, along with expanding the U.S.'s role as a leader in shark conservation carries significant potential in protecting shark populations. Lastly, governments and conservation entities must substantially increase research and public awareness regarding the issue to ensure …

Formalization As An Important Movement Post-Covid: Factors Supporting The Transition Of Street Food Vendors Into The Formal Economy In Egypt, Noha A. Alaa El Dine, Zeina Ismail, Nada Mohamed, Menatalla Kaoud
The World Research of Political Science Journal
Informal economy is one of the most important issues in Egypt and the whole world. According to the World Economics (2022), the size of informal economy in Egypt is estimated to be 34.8% which represents nearly $ 646 billion at GDP (PPP) levels. This paper examines the important movement of formalization especially after the pandemic and explores the factors supporting the transition of street food vendors, specifically coffee truck vendors, into the formal economy in Egypt. Exploratory survey was conducted with 100 vendors across Greater Cairo. Four hypotheses were explored to stand on the factors supporting the formalization and results …
Invading Eden: Exotic Pets And Invasive Species In South Florida, Andrew Pemberton
Invading Eden: Exotic Pets And Invasive Species In South Florida, Andrew Pemberton
Florida Historical Quarterly
On July 8, 2019, South Floridians woke up to a headline describing the removal of a sixteen-foot-long Burmese python and fifty of its eggs from beneath a suburban home near the Everglades. This is a common spectacle in South Florida. Floridians, long accustomed to their scaly, cold-blooded co-habitants, have seen these types of headlines since the 1980s. With increasing frequency, non-indigenous species are entering the state's public eye. Perhaps more remarkable than these snakes' presence beneath Floridia homes is their welcomed presence in households across the country. However, this trend in pet-keeping poses the most risk to ecosystems in Florida, …
Seagrass-Roots Environmentalism: The Lee County Conservation Association, Chris Wilhelm
Seagrass-Roots Environmentalism: The Lee County Conservation Association, Chris Wilhelm
Florida Historical Quarterly
After World War II, Florida crafted a new identity: the Sunshine State. This concept was not solely based on Florida's hot weather and sunny skies although the relationship between sun and water was implicit in the new identity. Tourists enjoyed the sun on boats and beaches, retirees and snowbirds fled northern winters for new sunny coastal cities. The heat of Florida's sunshine was thus balanced by the state's coastal waters. The Sunshine State is a convenient slogan, but Florida is actually defined by its coast. Other states have more sunshine, but none in the continental U.S. have more coastline or …
