Independent Visions Of Marginal America: Reimagining A Nation Through Outsiders, Searching, And Non-Arrival, Z Evan Long
Independent Visions Of Marginal America: Reimagining A Nation Through Outsiders, Searching, And Non-Arrival, Z Evan Long
Film and Media Studies (MA) Theses
This thesis explores critical responses to American-ness, American identity, and most significantly American myth, in independent films about America in cultural terms, and their attempts to deconstruct the myths of nation and culture. The independent films about America analyzed in this thesis range from the 1960s to the 1990s, made by filmmakers across movements and cultures, but they all contain in some measure three key concepts: the “outsider,” the “search,” and a narrative “non-arrival.” Easy Rider (1969) will be explored as the prototype for this paradigm, contrasted with films that reinterpret the road-movie structure away from existential angst and toward …
Flamenco, Gender Roles, And Female Empowerment In Granada, Spain, Dana F. Giordano
Flamenco, Gender Roles, And Female Empowerment In Granada, Spain, Dana F. Giordano
Senior Honors Projects
During the 2023-2024 academic year, my academic pursuits led me to Granada, Spain. This city is nestled within the culturally rich region of Andalucia, renowned as the birthplace of flamenco. Immersed in the study of Spanish language and culture, but also cognizant of prevalent issues of sexism deeply rooted within its societal fabric, I decided to explore gender expression and dynamics in flamenco. For this project, I researched Laura Mulvey's notion of the “male gaze,” a feminist theory that argues that the depiction of women in art and media supports a patriarchal society. Women are often portrayed as objects for …
The Kansas Band’S Musical Depictions Of Spiritual Quests, Elizabeth Romero
The Kansas Band’S Musical Depictions Of Spiritual Quests, Elizabeth Romero
Master's Theses
The progressive rock genre has been an intriguing subject of study for the scholarly community, especially within the last 30 years. An understudied part of the progressive rock scene, however, is its manifestation in the United States through the band Kansas. The band from 1970’s Topeka is acknowledged by Mitchell Morris as troublesome for critics due to the hybrid use of European art music and blues influences. It is no wonder a large study of Kansas music has not taken place due to the maligning of the band by its critics as well as the controversial views regarding pretentiousness of …
A Compendium Of Three Musical Works Inspired By The African American Experience: Recordings, Commentary, And Pedagogical Observations, Edward W. Hardy
A Compendium Of Three Musical Works Inspired By The African American Experience: Recordings, Commentary, And Pedagogical Observations, Edward W. Hardy
Dissertations
This dissertation focuses on three of my musical compositions inspired by Wade in the Water, Billie Holiday, and Margaret Walker respectively: Evolution (for solo violin, 2016), Strange Fruit (arranged for string quartet, 2020), and Born Free (for voice, violin, and piano, 2022). From the perspective of a classical composer-violinist, I created musical portraits that reflect America's pre-civil rights oppression, the celebration of the Harlem Renaissance, and the landscape of political, social, and economic experiences. This dissertation can also serve as a tool for various individuals: fellow violinists seeking modern techniques that bridge classical music to popular music, composers in search …

Africanities In Selected Art Songs For Voice And Piano By Babi De Oliveira, Ana Elisa Portes Lima
UNLV Theses, Dissertations, Professional Papers, and Capstones
This document explores Africanities on the music and texts of selected art songs by the Brazilian composer Babi de Oliveira (1908-1993), providing the historical context of how the Brazilian Portuguese appropriated the vocabulary and culture of African people brought to the New World during the period of slavery between the 15th and 19th centuries. The purpose of this document is to provide additional background information on the Afro-Brazilian musical heritage, its relevance to the composer, and its aesthetics in the history of Brazilian music, in order to give voice students and performers, especially non-Portuguese speakers, a broader perspective on this …

Echoes Of Pazuzu: The Influence Of A Mesopotamian Demon In World Music, Jonathan Jauregui
Student Scholar Symposium Abstracts and Posters
This project delves into the intersection of Mesopotamian mythology and world music through the lens of Pazuzu, a prominent demon from ancient Mesopotamia. Pazuzu's presence and malevolent attributes in Mesopotamian lore have sparked curiosity and fascination, transcending ancient civilizations to influence contemporary cultural expressions, including music. This research explores how Pazuzu's imagery, symbolism, and mythology have influenced various world music genres, ranging from metal to modern electronic compositions. This study will examine how Pazuzu's character is portrayed and interpreted within diverse musical traditions worldwide by analyzing musical compositions, lyrical themes, and cultural contexts. Through a comparative approach, it examines how …
Native American Choral Music: Strategies For Celebrating And Incorporating Music Of Indigenous People, Mary Ruth Young
Native American Choral Music: Strategies For Celebrating And Incorporating Music Of Indigenous People, Mary Ruth Young
Dissertations and Doctoral Documents, University of Nebraska-Lincoln, 2023–
*Language usage is fluid and evolving, representing past and present people groups. During my discussions with my Indigenous composer colleagues, I've found that they hold varying preferences regarding how they wish to be addressed and the terminology they prefer. Because of this, I use the terms Native, Native American, First Nations, Indigenous, American Indian, and First Peoples interchangeably.*
This document will discuss the historical exclusion of Native American music in the Western art forms, specifically the choral tradition, and provide solutions to incorporate it in modern choral performances. Considering first the wars, disease, displacement, colonization, and missionization, it is no …

Musical Inspirations From Tang Court Dance Nichang Yuyi In Liu Qing’S Fantasia Of Chinese Ancient Dance For Two Pianos, Yuan Li
Dissertations
Dr. Liu Qing’s Fantasia of Chinese Ancient Dance for two pianos (2011) stands as a notable contemporary Chinese piano composition that reinterprets the renowned court dance suite Nichang Yuyi (the dance of Rainbow-Colored Feather Garment) from the 8th century Tang Dynasty China. Drawing inspiration from the structure and the musical modal languages of the Tang court dance, as well as the descriptions from Tang poet Bai Juyi’s poem of Nichang, Liu Qing adeptly combined her knowledge of Chinese musical traditions with Western compositional techniques, introducing stylistic diversity to the piano duo scene through this captivating work of dance music. This …

Sun, Thunder, Daugava: Accessible Choral Music From The Latvian Choral Tradition, Paul M. Von Kampen
Dissertations and Doctoral Documents, University of Nebraska-Lincoln, 2023–
I have been fortunate enough to visit Latvia twice, once in 2009 and again in 2023. With connections made through the global outreach arm of the Lutheran Church Missouri–Synod, I was able to incorporate myself into Latvian culture in ways that may not have been possible had I been a standard tourist. I am grateful to have been invited into the homes of Latvian friends, to have studied in the Jāzeps Vītols Music Academy Library, and to have celebrated both the Jāņi midsummer festival in the Latvian countryside and my twenty-second birthday on the shores of the mighty Daugava River. …
An Unnecessary Barrier: A Critical History Of Efforts To Define A Core Repertoire For The Wind Band, Trevor Frost
An Unnecessary Barrier: A Critical History Of Efforts To Define A Core Repertoire For The Wind Band, Trevor Frost
Dissertations and Doctoral Documents, University of Nebraska-Lincoln, 2023–
The wind band saw significant development in its literature, instrumentation, and programming practices throughout the twentieth century. Midway through the twentieth century the identification of a “core” repertoire began to make its way into the forefront of the wind band profession’s priorities, resulting in three significant studies by Acton Eric Ostling Jr. (1978), Jay Warren Gilbert (1993), and Clifford N. Towner (2011). Along with these studies many smaller studies and surveys were being published with this same goal of identifying either a “performance core” or an “intellectual core.” However, with new works of serious artistic merit constantly being written and …

Compositional Practices In The Accompaniment Of Celtic Trad Music, Mason Taylor
Compositional Practices In The Accompaniment Of Celtic Trad Music, Mason Taylor
Composition/Recording Projects
n this research paper, I look at how traditional Irish folk musicians—“Trad” as it is commonly referred to by musicians in the style––approach, think of, and perform accompaniment, specifically the contrapuntal style that is common amongst mandolin and bouzouki players. Trad has evolved greatly over the years. Originally, Trad was performed without any form of accompaniment—no guitar, no piano, no cello. Many solo instruments, such as the flute and the fiddle, would play the same melody with the only harmony occurring at moments where performers would momentarily diverge from the melody with an improvised ornament. Somewhere along its varied history, …

Resonance: A Methodology And Pedagogy For Socially Just Storytelling, Helen Plevka-Jones
Theses and Dissertations
Through a close analysis of Valeria Luiselli’s Lost Children Archive and a comparative analysis of the intertexts it references, this dissertation argues that literary scholars and literacy pedagogues can learn from sound studies and archival practices together to achieve more socially just reading, writing, and teaching. The novel narrates a family traveling across the United States, not only experiencing their own journey but also learning about past forced migrations upon the same land and present attempted migrations into the country. As they encounter and interact with different print, audio, and visual artifacts, the characters achieve a more inclusive and complex …
“When White Men And Indians United Shall Praise:” Indigenous Inclusion In The Hartford Music Company, Savannah N. Skaggs
“When White Men And Indians United Shall Praise:” Indigenous Inclusion In The Hartford Music Company, Savannah N. Skaggs
ATU Scholars Symposium
The Hartford Music Company and Institute of Hartford, Arkansas has attracted increasing academic interest, particularly within the last twenty years. This southern gospel music publishing company and singing school based in southern Sebastian County published a collection of shape note hymnals which boasted some of the genre’s most prolific literature. Though a growing number of Arkansans are learning that these gospel staples came from their own hill country, many do not realize that several of these songs were premiered by or recorded by Indigenous people. While this may not initially seem particularly impactful, this genre developed its own distinct identity …
María Grever: Influence Through Mexican Folk And Classical Romantic Techniques And Ideals In ‘A Una Ola.’, Alexandria C. Ellis
María Grever: Influence Through Mexican Folk And Classical Romantic Techniques And Ideals In ‘A Una Ola.’, Alexandria C. Ellis
ATU Scholars Symposium
In the last 25 years, there has been a resurgence in Latin American ethnomusicology. This means that, while interest continues to grow, there are several gaps, especially when it comes to the contributions of women. Interestingly, some of these gaps surround the popular Mexican composer María Grever. This includes the lack of information on the variety of sources she gathered inspiration from for composition. Through analyzing Grever's compositional style, especially in the bolero ‘A Una Ola,’or ‘To a Wave,’ I will examine the relationship that Grever employs between the classical Romantic approach and Latin American techniques, especially Mexican folk. While …

Avenue Breakdown: Black Music And The Recording Industry In Shreveport, 1948-1988, John Michael Shaw
Electronic Theses and Dissertations Archive
Although there has been some scholarship in regard to country music in the city of Shreveport, Louisiana, as well as research into the lives of Jimmie Davis and Huddie Ledbetter, no comprehensive research into the city’s rich Black music scene has heretofore existed. Furthermore, the area has been home to a number of Black artists about whom little has been written. This dissertation attempts to document Shreveport’s Black music scene, both in live performance and recording, during a forty-year period stretching from 1948 to 1988. These years interestingly coincide with the opening and closing of an iconic record shop and …

Popular Music And Sociocultural Empathy In The Elementary Classroom, Kelsey M. Packman
Popular Music And Sociocultural Empathy In The Elementary Classroom, Kelsey M. Packman
Masters Theses
This qualitative ethnographic study explores the undocumented effects of popular music on elementary students’ social and cultural empathy. Previous studies have explored the effects of popular music on adolescent and college-age students, but no study has researched these effects in the elementary classroom. This study aims to show that learning about socially-relevant popular music in a social setting advances students’ sociocultural and musical development. The researcher recruited eighty elementary-aged students from a private school in the Las Virgines School District in Los Angeles to participate in this study. The participants were sorted into subgroups by grade, and each subgroup was …

Shaky Foundations: Cultural Classifications In Museum Collections Management Systems And The Endurance Of Colonial-Era Terminology, Carlee S. Forbes, Erica P. Jones
Artl@s Bulletin
This article uses two musical instruments with attached ancestral remains and labeled as “Asante” from the Fowler Museum at UCLA to consider effects of style-based cultural classifications that appear in museum databases today. We highlight the sway of past classifications over our current understanding of objects that is prolonged by the problem of confirmation-bias in museum collections management systems. We then indicate how working across disciplines stimulated a more nuanced understanding about the complexities of artistic styles for musical instruments with attached human remains in the Akan-speaking region of West Africa.

Introducing Chinese Folk Songs Through Arrangements For Trombone & Piano And Chamber Music, Tianyu Xue
Introducing Chinese Folk Songs Through Arrangements For Trombone & Piano And Chamber Music, Tianyu Xue
LSU Doctoral Dissertations
The scarcity of trombone in traditional Chinese music reflects the limited exposure and education for the trombone in China. Additionally, Chinese folk songs have minimal presence on the global stage. This project will bridge this gap by developing a series of trombone pieces that incorporate Chinese musical elements, explicitly focusing on elevating Chinese folk songs through trombone performance. This initiative offers an opportunity for trombonists worldwide to delve into the richness of Chinese folk music. The core of this work involves selecting Chinese folk songs that represent diverse historical contexts, regional characteristics, and emotional content and then arranging them for …
The Endtroducing Of Sampling: A Comparative Study And Critique Of Hip-Hop Sampling Techniques From The 1990s-2000s To Late 2010s-2020s, Reiana K. Thomas
The Endtroducing Of Sampling: A Comparative Study And Critique Of Hip-Hop Sampling Techniques From The 1990s-2000s To Late 2010s-2020s, Reiana K. Thomas
Symposium on Research and Creative Expression (SORCE)
Sampling practices in Hip-Hop have undergone a transformative journey from the 1990s-2000s to the late 2010s-2020s. Delving into whether this transformation has positively or negatively impacted the quality and crux of what Hip-Hop music constitutes is rather ambiguous. Critiquing the artistic interpretation of a producer's sample-based song is rather subjective, however, analyzing the practical elements such as sampling techniques, production processes, and critical reception, allows for an enhanced academic perspective. While researchers have heavily discussed ethical, legal, and economic considerations of samples through qualitative analyses and quantitative studies, this study provides a hybrid framework, to critique the practical applications of …
