This thesis is an annotated listing of music books for the high school library. In conducting this study, use was made of the music collections of four major universities in the Midwest. Chapter 3, the report of the findings of this study, contains three parts. The first part consists of the division of music books into fourteen categories. The areas presented are: General reference sources, Aesthetics, Music Appreciation, Orchestral Music, History of Music, History of Instruments, Musicology, Biography, Music Theory, Applied Music, Form and Analysis, Conducting, Music Education as a Profession, and Miscellaneous-Opera. The purposes of this study are (1) to provide information about the vital part that music has played in the Polynesian cultures of Hawaii, Samoa, Tahiti, Tonga, and New Zealand, (2) to present in written form heretofore unpublished children's songs and dances from the five principal cultures of Polynesia, and (3) to provide explanatory material on the use of these songs.

The Appalachian Dulcimer: Its Origins And History, Doris Arlene Herndon

The attempt is made in this paper to show that the Appalachian dulcimer is a variant, transplanted form of similar folk instruments which are to be found in northern Europe and that the dulcimer is neither a native American instrument nor English in origin.

The procedure followed is to note the place in which the Appalachian dulcimer fits into the Sachs-von Hornbostel classification of musical instruments and to describe the northern European instruments which also belong there. The northern European instruments and the Appalachian dulcimer are then compared.

Attention is drawn to the lack of evidence supporting a popular belief …
