Fiddle Songs And Banjo Songs: A Description Index, Gilbert Wayne Howard Dec 1981

Fiddle Songs And Banjo Songs: A Description Index, Gilbert Wayne Howard

Masters Theses & Specialist Projects

English-language texts associated with fiddle and banjo in the southern United States are described and then indexed for comparative reference. The fiddle songs are typically humorous, very brief, highly variable and disunified. The same is true of many banjo songs associated with the banjo. Ballads in the fiddle and the banjo repertory are not indexed if previously catalogued by Child or Laws.

Fiddle and banjo songs are defined as texts associated with fiddle or banjo playing, either through instrumental accompaniment or because informants mentally associate them with the fiddle or banjo. Various ways of performing the songs are enumerated, with …

The Psycho-Physiological Effects Of Volume, Pitch, Harmony And Rhythm In The Development Of Western Art Music Implications For A Philosophy Of Music History, Wolfgang Hans Stefani

Master's Theses

Problem Contemporary Christian churches have a growing concern over music ethics. A more objective standard than personal taste and opinion is needed to evaluate and assess both art music and popular music. The purpose of this present study was to determine a philosophy of music history on which an objective standard can be based. The study also investigated the expressive function of music. Method Two fields of investigation in music scholarship were correlated — the history of stylistic and instrumental development in Western art music and the scientific study of the psychophysiological effects of music on the human organism. Results …

The Lark On The Strand: A Study Of A Traditional Irish Flute Player And His Music, Lori Jane Kaplan

Masters Theses & Specialist Projects

This thesis provides an in-depth study of a traditional Irish flute player, Jack Coen. Jack, raised in the village of Woodford in County Galway, immigrated to America in 1949 at the age of twenty-four. With his large repertoire of Irish traditional dance tunes, Jack has played music at parties, dances, with the New York Ceilidhe Band, and at festivals such as the 1976 Festival of American Folklife in Washington, D.C. Jack teaches the flute and the tin whistle and is recognized both as a teacher and as a player.

By examining Jack Coen’s music we learn about the style, technique, …
