The Flowering Thorn, Thomas A. Mckean Jan 2003

The Flowering Thorn, Thomas A. Mckean

All USU Press Publications

The flowering thorn expresses the dual nature of the ballad: at once a distinctive expression of European tradition, but also somewhat tricky to approach from a scholarly perspective, requiring a range of disciplines to illuminate its rich composition. Most of this latter quality has to do with the very features that characterize ballads... or narrative songs. These include an appearance of fragmentation; a wide range of cultural and social referents; complex, evocative symbolic language; and variation. The notable multiformity of meaning, text and tune is mirrored in scholarship, too. The Flowering Thorn is therefore wide ranging, with articles written by …

On Researching Music In Everyday Life:Assessing The Musician As Producer Of Commercialised Music, Alan Bradshaw, Roger Sherlock, Pierre Mcdonagh

Articles

Adorno & Horkheimer (1998) argue that the Culture Industry generates cultural artefacts that fail to develop human consciousness and hence support the domination of the capitalist system. Steinert (2003) states that the pressures facing musicians to negotiate between the demands of the culture industry and the traditional role of the artist generates a fundamental contradiction within art which is symbolically enacted through artistic production. This study, which draws on on-going postgraduate research aims to develop a research framework that investigates how musicians negotiate this contradiction. The study considers if a more reflexive approach to art exists, typified by the Pop …

Developing A Four-Mallet Marimba Technique Featuring The Alternation Of Mallets In Each Hand For Linear Passages And The Application Of This Technique To Transcriptions Of Selected Keyboard Works By J.S. Bach, Thomas Allen Zirkle Jan 2003

Developing A Four-Mallet Marimba Technique Featuring The Alternation Of Mallets In Each Hand For Linear Passages And The Application Of This Technique To Transcriptions Of Selected Keyboard Works By J.S. Bach, Thomas Allen Zirkle

LSU Doctoral Dissertations

The goal of this study is to develop a four-mallet marimba technique that utilizes alternation within each hand on linear passages, then apply this technique to selected keyboard works of J. S. Bach. This paper provides a method of training the hands for this type of alternation and will hypothesize a conception of hand positions as a method of facing the visual/spatial logistics issues of marimba performance. A performance annotation chapter will then apply the alternation sticking, and its resultant positional concepts, to three new transcriptions of J. S. Bach's inventions and a prelude and fugue from his Well-Tempered Clavier …

Transmission & The Internet: The Contemporary Response Of A Traditional Musical Community, Griselda Sanderson Jan 2003

Transmission & The Internet: The Contemporary Response Of A Traditional Musical Community, Griselda Sanderson

Other Faculty of Arts, Humanities and Business Theses

This thesis is a study of the performance, interpretation and transmission practices of traditional instrumental musicians in Scotland and Ireland. Extensive original research was undertaken over a period of four years including a survey of current transmission practices amongst traditional musicians from Britain and Ireland. Both preservation and the study of change are vital elements in maintaining a flourishing oral culture. However, my focus is on definition. The study is an attempt to clarify the many contemporary and often conflicting expressions of musical experience that constitute part of the oral tradition in Scotland and Ireland. By examining the work of …

The Dies Irae ("Day Of Wrath") And Totentanz ("Dance Of Death"): Medieval Themes Revisited In 19th Century Music And Culture, Erin Brooks Jan 2003

The Dies Irae ("Day Of Wrath") And Totentanz ("Dance Of Death"): Medieval Themes Revisited In 19th Century Music And Culture, Erin Brooks

Inquiry: The University of Arkansas Undergraduate Research Journal

During the pivotal November 2002 football game of Arkansas vs. Georgia in the SEC conference championship, the Georgia marching band struck up their defensive rallying song. Instead of a typical "defense" song, the band played an excerpt of the Gregorian Sequence Dies Irae ("Day of Wrath'') from the Roman Catholic Requiem Mass. Drastically dissociated from its original medieval milieu, this musical Sequence still manages to elicit the same effect of fear and foreboding nearly a thousand years later. Precisely because of its deep musical and cultural roots, the Dies Irae occupies a significant place in history, closely intertwined from early …

Establishing Recording Studios For The Purpose Of Developing Indigenous Worship For Tunisian Believers, Frank Fortunato Dec 2002

Establishing Recording Studios For The Purpose Of Developing Indigenous Worship For Tunisian Believers, Frank Fortunato

Masters Theses

Over several decades churches worldwide have focused on recovering or discovering biblical, vibrant worship. With one brilliant statement John Piper captured the current wave of worship and connected it to missions. In what has become a classic motto of the missions movement Piper reminded the Christian community that “missions exists because worship doesn’t. Missions is not the ultimate goal of the church. Worship is.” While not a new concept, these few words helped forge missions and worship into symbiotic relationship. Each morphed into the other in an ongoing continuum. The establishing of thriving, biblical churches that were also worshiping churches …

Painting The Canvas Of Silence: Vision Enriched Through Voice, Karie Willyerd Oct 2002

Painting The Canvas Of Silence: Vision Enriched Through Voice, Karie Willyerd

Student Scholarship

“Leaders are like conductors.” Peruse a half dozen management journals, and it is likely that the analogy “leaders are like conductors” will show up at least once, frequently citing the same Peter Drucker quote. Correspondingly, music journals are as likely to proclaim “conductors are like great leaders” (Armstrong, 1996). As intuitively true as this may seem, little research has been done to study the leadership characteristics of conductors. Instead, the study of conductors has focused primarily on their artistic abilities. This study was aimed at filling that gap. Most conductors perform globally, and thus the analogy of conductor to leader …
