Discourse Analysis As Potential For Re-Visioning Music Education, Brent C. Talbot Apr 2013

Discourse Analysis As Potential For Re-Visioning Music Education, Brent C. Talbot

Sunderman Conservatory of Music Faculty Publications

Discourse analysis holds great potential for re-visioning the field of music education. This paper explores works from Foucault, Blommaert, Scollon and Scollon, as well as others, to suggest a theoretical and methodological approach to analyzing discourse in settings of music transmission that takes into consideration who we are, what we do, and how we do it. Discourse is defined in this paper as meaningful, mediated language-in-place. By analyzing acts of speech as well as cultural objects (such as instruments, mallets, and bows) and concepts (such as a conducting gestures or solfege syllables) used as mediational means in situ, we can …

Adapting & Appropriating Art From Afar: Negotiating A Global Identity Through Popular Culture, A Study Of Salsa In The Senegalese Context, Elizabeth Bockenfeld Apr 2013

Adapting & Appropriating Art From Afar: Negotiating A Global Identity Through Popular Culture, A Study Of Salsa In The Senegalese Context, Elizabeth Bockenfeld

Independent Study Project (ISP) Collection

The following study is essentially an attempt to explore cross-cultural exchange and the resulting (re)creation of different forms of cultural expression. In its broadest sense it aims to explore the quotidian, cultural sides of globalization. It takes for its focus the re-appropriation of salsa music in Dakar, Senegal. Through interviews and participant observation in a number of salsa venues, I explore the various meanings Senegalese salseros put into salsa music and dance. Senegalese salsa is rooted in a very concrete historical background, while also holding meaning for the present. In short, the appropriation of salsa into the Senegalese context serves …

Singing To The Spirits: Cultural And Spiritual Traditions Embodied In The Native American Gourd Dance, Alicia M. Gummess Apr 2013

Singing To The Spirits: Cultural And Spiritual Traditions Embodied In The Native American Gourd Dance, Alicia M. Gummess

Honors Projects

In this paper, I provide a brief overview of the history and practice of the Native American Gourd Dance, a traditional ceremony integrating music and dance practiced by Gourd Dance societies in Southern Oklahoma. I examine the reasons behind its popularity and spread to other regions of North America, including the Southwest and the Northern Plains. Gourd Dance performances usually occur in the context of larger ceremonial gatherings called pow wows, in which Native American communities hold dances to celebrate their values and practice their religious beliefs and cultural traditions. Pow wows feature many traditional and more modern Native American …

Across The Red Steppe: Exploring Mongolian Music In China And Exporting It From Within, Thalea C. Davis Apr 2013

Across The Red Steppe: Exploring Mongolian Music In China And Exporting It From Within, Thalea C. Davis

Masters Theses

Mongolian music culture as it exists in China is a unique entity unto itself as it features a base of traditional Mongolian practice and also includes aspects of Chinese music and culture. As the world becomes more interconnected and as China continues to display a markedly Han society to the world at large, Mongolian musicians and Mongolian-music enthusiasts in China maintain and evolve their musical culture in a nebulous middle-ground between Mongolian and Han-Chinese culture. How Mongolian music culture in China came to be and its ultimate function in global society are the key questions being investigated in this thesis. …

Rebel Girls: Feminist Punk For A New Generation, Rachel L. Bodansky Apr 2013

Rebel Girls: Feminist Punk For A New Generation, Rachel L. Bodansky

Scripps Senior Theses

This thesis examines the Riot Grrrl bands of the 1990s, as well as Amanda Palmer today, as examples of feminist punk artists. Rather than focusing on Riot Grrrl as a unique musical episode, this thesis argues that all punk is activist in nature, and that Riot Grrrl was building on this activist tradition while challenging the misogyny implicit in punk culture. Likewise, Amanda Palmer uses similar punk strategies (such as a DIY approach to music production, and direct interaction with fans) to create political music.

Kachin Sound Instruments Within The Context Of The Kachin Baptist Convention Of Northern Burma: History, Classification, And Uses, Walter Brath Apr 2013

Kachin Sound Instruments Within The Context Of The Kachin Baptist Convention Of Northern Burma: History, Classification, And Uses, Walter Brath

Masters Theses

This organology identifies and describes the Kachin's sound instruments, classifies them according to the Hornbostel-Sachs' system, and considers evidence of an indigenous classification scheme. Very little research exists to date on the music of the Kachin peoples of Northern Burma. This paper cites the only known indigenous organology and is the first English language study to extrapolate evidence into an emergent classification system. This qualitative study is based on ethnographic interviews, the minimal literature available on the topic, and participant observation drawn from fieldwork conducted in the Kachin State of Northern Burma (modern day Myanmar) during the months of May …

Music And Movement Share A Dynamic Structure That Supports Universal Expressions Of Emotion, Beau Sievers, Larry Polansky, Michael Casey, Thalia Wheatley Jan 2013

Music And Movement Share A Dynamic Structure That Supports Universal Expressions Of Emotion, Beau Sievers, Larry Polansky, Michael Casey, Thalia Wheatley

Dartmouth Scholarship

Music moves us. Its kinetic power is the foundation of human behaviors as diverse as dance, romance, lullabies, and the military march. Despite its significance, the music-movement relationship is poorly understood. We present an empirical method for testing whether music and movement share a common structure that affords equivalent and universal emotional expressions. Our method uses a computer program that can generate matching examples of music and movement from a single set of features: rate, jitter (regularity of rate), direction, step size, and dissonance/visual spikiness. We applied our method in two experiments, one in the United States and another in …

Embodying Mallorquinness Through Performativity And Narration Of Mallorquin Dance, Linda Dankworth Jan 2013

Embodying Mallorquinness Through Performativity And Narration Of Mallorquin Dance, Linda Dankworth

Journal of Tourism Consumption and Practice

The Mallorcan dancers' sense of embodying Mallorquiness as stylistic qualities of their stage performances, produces in them a sense of representing a double identity: one for themselves in social contexts performing improvised dances as a contemporary image to each other, and another that is more ancient and projects the romantic nationalism associated with the dances' origins in stage presentations for tourists. It is the stage presentations that are a focus of this paper, where an ancient identity is created in the visual imagery of the Mallorcan dancers’ performances as a reconstruction of their past. This paper explores the relationship between …

Invitation Through Song: Evangelism And Divine Discourse In Arkansas Revivals, Chelsea Hodge Jan 2013

Invitation Through Song: Evangelism And Divine Discourse In Arkansas Revivals, Chelsea Hodge

Inquiry: The University of Arkansas Undergraduate Research Journal

For over a century, Protestant evangelists have held revivals to spread their beliefs. The invitation song is the culmination of these meetings; a sermon ends with an invitation to the unsaved to come forward and publicly accept the faith of the revivalists during the “invitation song.” This hymn is not just a traditional means to allow converts to declare their faith; Christians view this time of congregational singing as an intensely personal declaration of their own conviction, a discourse between themselves and the divine. The singers believe their music can be a powerful instrument of change because of a fundamental …

Aaja Nachle, Come And Dance With Me Youtube's Role In The Globalization Of Bollywood-Style Dance, Lauren Brown Jan 2013

Aaja Nachle, Come And Dance With Me Youtube's Role In The Globalization Of Bollywood-Style Dance, Lauren Brown

Theses & ETDs

This thesis explores how the advent of YouTube merged participatory culture and internet-based video sharing into a global participatory culture, thereby expanding the reach and cultural familiarity of Bollywood dance style beyond South Asian culture. With the Indian and Desi culture of creating filmi dances already participatory, the international market for Bollywood films gives Bollywood-style dance global exposure. Bollywood-style dance had a successful model for helping participants to achieve flow in face-to-face groups, which translated well to the Internet. The low learning curve and high ability to maintain interest in performing Bollywood-style dance made it a successful element of participatory …

A La Recherche De L'Accordeon Narratives Of The Accordion's Travel And Identity In Cajun Louisiana And Paris, Mollie Farr Jan 2013

A La Recherche De L'Accordeon Narratives Of The Accordion's Travel And Identity In Cajun Louisiana And Paris, Mollie Farr

Theses & ETDs

This thesis is an exploration of the accordion's existence in the cultural music of both Cajun Louisiana and Paris. Throughout this project I have attempted to reconstruct the narratives that contribute to each of these French-speaking cultures senses of identity in relation to the instrument, which has become a symbol in each milieu. As the protagonist of multiple narratives in different sociohistorical contexts, the accordion is involved in a complex series of networks and relationships in history and folklore that create around it a distinctive "social life" that can be discussed as such. By exploring the nature of the instrument's …

How Bebop Came To Be: The Early History Of Modern Jazz, Colin M. Messinger Jan 2013

How Bebop Came To Be: The Early History Of Modern Jazz, Colin M. Messinger

Student Publications

Bebop, despite its rather short lifespan, would become a key influence for every style that came after it. Bebop’s effects on improvisation, group structure, and harmony would be felt throughout jazz for decades to come, and the best known musicians of the bebop era are still regarded as some of the finest jazz musicians to ever take the stage. But the characteristics of bebop can easily be determined from the music itself. [excerpt]

A Comparison Of Bluegrass Bands: 2013 Bands Versus The 1940s-1960s Bands, Elizabeth Rosanne Butler Jan 2013

A Comparison Of Bluegrass Bands: 2013 Bands Versus The 1940s-1960s Bands, Elizabeth Rosanne Butler

Electronic Theses and Dissertations

The present study investigated the bluegrass music genre of 2013 and compared it with bluegrass found in the 1940s and 1960s. To date, only one similar study has been identified. In 1963, L.M. Smith completed a study entitled, Bluegrass Music and Musicians: An Introductory Study of a Musical Style in Its Cultural Context. In the conclusion to his study, Smith listed five major characteristics found in the bluegrass genre: 1. "Bluegrass is hillbilly music, played by white Southern musicians for a Southern audience." 2. "Bluegrass is not dance music and is seldom used for this purpose." 3. "Bands are made …

Democratizing Indian Popular Music: From Cassette Culture To The Digital Era, Peter L. Manuel Jan 2013

Democratizing Indian Popular Music: From Cassette Culture To The Digital Era, Peter L. Manuel

Publications and Research

The history of Indian popular music constitutes in itself a significant development in modern culture, as this set of genres—especially but not only in their Bollywood forms—have been cherished by hundreds of millions of listeners not only in South Asia but internationally as well. At the same time, the trajectory of Indian popular music represents a dramatic case study of media culture as well, as its patterns of ownership, consumption, and even musical structures themselves have been conditioned by technological changes. Most striking is the way that a highly monopolized, streamlined, and homogeneous popular music culture dominated for several decades …

Trans-Relational Poetics And Outsider American Modernist And Postmodernist Poetry, Anna Elena Eyre Jan 2013

Trans-Relational Poetics And Outsider American Modernist And Postmodernist Poetry, Anna Elena Eyre

Legacy Theses & Dissertations (2009 - 2024)

This dissertation is concerned with how language mediates the relationship between self and other, and in particular, mythopoetic language. The political potential of myth has long been condemned, so much so that the word "myth" is now synonymous with "false." I argue that this is a result of what I term as heroic mythopoesis wherein the relationship between self and other is predicated on a violent separation that reinforces conceptions of identity. In contrast, in what I term as trans-relational mythopoesis this relationship is contingent on an embodied exposure between self and other that reciprocally translates and transforms conceptions of …

Two Sides To A Drum: Duality In Trinidad Orisha Music And Culture, Ryan J. Bazinet Jan 2013

Two Sides To A Drum: Duality In Trinidad Orisha Music And Culture, Ryan J. Bazinet

Dissertations, Theses, and Capstone Projects

This dissertation presents an ethnographic and historical study of music and culture in the Yoruba-derived Trinidad Orisha religion in Trinidad and New York City. Its objectives are: (1) to provide description and documentation of Trinidad Orisha music, an understudied music genre in the African diaspora; (2) to shed light on the historical, cultural, and demographic factors contributing to the development of Trinidad Orisha music by its practitioners; and (3) to provide substance for meaningful comparisons between Trinidad Orisha music and other Yoruba-derived musics.

Based on four years of fieldwork (2008-2012) in Trinidad and in Brooklyn, NY, the study explores Trinidad …
