Navigating Identities: The Musical Lives Of Four Second-Generation Immigrant Children In Miami, Florida, Sandra Sanchez Adorno
Navigating Identities: The Musical Lives Of Four Second-Generation Immigrant Children In Miami, Florida, Sandra Sanchez Adorno
Open Access Dissertations
The expanding social worlds of middle childhood prompt children to evaluate and explore their sense of selves to better understand who they are and where they fit in (Erikson, 1968; Josselson & Harway, 2012). Children born in the USA to at least one foreign-born parent, also known as second-generation immigrants, often straddle multiple cultures, making their social contexts highly diverse and their explorations of identity complex (Sebastian, 2008). This collective case study focused on the home musical lives of four second-generation children in Miami, Florida, USA to gain greater insight into music’s meaning in their lives and the role it …

The Puerto Rican Danza: A Stylistic Study With Emphasis On Performance, Teaching, And Practicing Strategies, Inesa Gegprifti
Open Access Dissertations
The danza puertorriqueña is considered a national emblem for Puerto Rico and it has a long-standing history as the music that has accompanied the people of the Island through multiple political, social, and cultural changes. In essence, it stemmed from the choreographed European contradanza and its inherited influences. However, the danza, particularly that for piano, took on a life of its own with idiosyncratic elements of the Caribbean culture in the mid-nineteenth century. This study traces the history and style of the danza since its adoption in Puerto Rico and provides more information about the genre with the hope of …

“Ain’T It A Pretty Night?”: An Analysis Of Carlisle Floyd’S Susannah As An Allegory For The Socio-Political Culture Of The United States In The 1950s, Melissa L. Allen
Senior Honors Projects, 2010-2019
This capstone thesis discusses the applicability of Carlisle Floyd’s 1955 opera, Susannah, as an allegory for the socio-political climate of the United States in the 1950s. In order to do so, a musical analysis of the opera’s score was then performed for its use of folk song conventions and verismo operatic conventions. The libretto was analyzed for the use of social conventions of Southern Appalachia. Characters actions and musical content were then judged on whether (1) their actions were in line with the social conventions of traditional Appalachian culture and (2) if their musical content used/reflected conventions of traditional Appalachian …
How Native American Rappers Communicate And Create A Modern Identity, Hannah J. Berge
How Native American Rappers Communicate And Create A Modern Identity, Hannah J. Berge
Masters Theses, 2010-2019
Current research concerning identity and Native Americans is sparse outside the realm of expressly Native American scholarship. While most conversations about identity and Native Americans focuses on historical and political aspects, many sources do not explore alternative avenues of contemporary identity creation. This thesis uses Kenneth Burke’s pentad to analyze the lyrics for “AbOriginal” by Frank Waln. The pentad is used to analyze each line of the rap. A new term, alter-agent, is used to identify agents who the agent either associates with or who the agent views as hindering his progress. There is then a count of the number …
Nā Mele O Ka Lāhui: A Conductor's Guide To The Choral Music Of LiliʻUokalani, Jace Saplan
Nā Mele O Ka Lāhui: A Conductor's Guide To The Choral Music Of LiliʻUokalani, Jace Saplan
Open Access Dissertations
The last reigning monarch of the Kingdom of Hawaiʻi, Queen Liliʻuokalani was also an avid composer of Hawaiian choral music. Her vast output places her as the most influential Native Hawaiian composer of the nineteenth century as well as a crucial figure in the development of Hawaiian choral music. Utilizing the history and repertoire of Lili’uokalani as a framework, this essay presents a guide for conductors of nineteenth century Hawaiian choral music in idiomatic performance issues specific to the repertoire, including diction, choral tone, instrumentation, and Native Hawaiian performance ritual. Because the performance practices of Liliʻuokalani’s music continue to evolve …
The Music And Politics Of Willy Chirino, Nancy N. Balcziunas
The Music And Politics Of Willy Chirino, Nancy N. Balcziunas
Honors College Theses
Cuban musician and singer Willy Chirino, the self-proclaimed inventor of the “Miami Sound,” was sent to the United States as a teenager in the 1960s under Operation Pedro Pan to escape the influence of Fidel Castro's communist regime. Throughout his career, he has used his music to spread a personal and political agenda; his rejection of communism and the Castro regime can be seen through his song lyrics, humanitarian efforts, and direct engagement in the world of politics.

Worship Renewal Through Discipleship: How Discipleship And Mission Affects Our Worship, Kevin Haglund
Worship Renewal Through Discipleship: How Discipleship And Mission Affects Our Worship, Kevin Haglund
Masters Theses
Numerous articles, blogs, and books have been written in recent years about the lessening of congregational participation in singing and many have called for a renewal of worship and changes in worship practice within the church. Yet, most of the solutions offered are aimed at bettering what happens inside the worship event—singing songs with more theologically rich lyrics, incorporating more scripture and prayer, striving for more creative ways to engage the congregation, more resources and training for worship leaders, and many other valuable ideas. As excellent as those solutions may be, they are incomplete unless we also focus on that …
Enhancing The Spiritual Well-Being Of Alzheimer's Patients Utilizing Music, Sheri Heeb
Enhancing The Spiritual Well-Being Of Alzheimer's Patients Utilizing Music, Sheri Heeb
Masters Theses
Over 40 million people have some form of dementia. Alzheimer’s Disease “is the sixth leading cause of death in the United States.” The non-pharmaceutical approaches in this study do not have the side-effects of many of the therapies currently being used for treating Alzheimer’s Disease. As part of this project, I will reference multiple research studies which include spirituality and Alzheimer’s Disease, the Nun Study of the Sisters of Notre Dame, and music therapy and Alzheimer’s Disease. Results show that music therapy boosts the memory, reduces anxiety and behavioral issues, and restores a sense of self-awareness. Other studies show that …
Salar Music And Identity: A "Sad" Sound, Elizabeth Keating
Salar Music And Identity: A "Sad" Sound, Elizabeth Keating
Masters Theses
The Salar are a Muslim minority group in China. They are from the northwest province of Qinghai. Xunhua, the Salar autonomous county, is located about 150 kilometers away from Qinghai’s capital, Xining. I have elected to learn about this minority group because of the need for research and general value. There is a need because little prior research has been done concerning the Salar minority within the field of ethnomusicology. This hole needs to be filled within minority China research. Beyond ethnomusicology, cultural and sociological understanding will profit, expanding the knowledge base of humankind. Also, the Salar themselves are interested …
Porch And Playhouse, Parlor And Performance Hall: Traversing Boundaries In Gottschalk's The Banjo, Laura Moore Pruett
Porch And Playhouse, Parlor And Performance Hall: Traversing Boundaries In Gottschalk's The Banjo, Laura Moore Pruett
Visual & Performing Arts Faculty Publications
This article reconsiders the cultural significance and historical impact of the well-known virtuosic piano composition The Banjo by Louis Moreau Gottschalk. Throughout the early nineteenth century, the banjo and the piano inhabited very specific and highly contrasting performance circumstances: black folk entertainment and minstrel shows for the former, white middle- and upper-class parlors and concert halls for the latter. In The Banjo, Louis Moreau Gottschalk lifted the banjo out of its familiar contexts and placed it in the spaces usually privileged for the piano. Taking its inspiration from both African American and minstrel banjo playing techniques, Gottschalk's composition relaxed and …

Going Old School: Using Eighteenth Century Pedagogy Models To Foster Musical Skills And Creativity In Today's Students, Monique Arar
Going Old School: Using Eighteenth Century Pedagogy Models To Foster Musical Skills And Creativity In Today's Students, Monique Arar
UNLV Theses, Dissertations, Professional Papers, and Capstones
Recent research has illuminated a pedagogical approach to keyboard improvisation of the Italian conservatories of the seventeenth and eighteenth centuries, namely that of partimenti: single-stave, multiple clef exercises in which students were trained to improvise (Gjerdingen 2007, Sanguinetti 2012, van Tour 2015). This approach was passed down through oral instruction until the mid-twentieth century, when pedagogical priorities shifted away from improvisation and compositional creativity towards virtuosity, technique and adherence to the printed page. Simultaneously, the tradition of decade-long musical apprenticeship was replaced with semester-long courses in music theory and harmony.
The existing research on partimenti presents a compelling historical narrative …

"Only The Name Is New:" Identity, Modernity, And Continuity In Afghan Star, Timothy Olson
"Only The Name Is New:" Identity, Modernity, And Continuity In Afghan Star, Timothy Olson
Masters Theses
In 2005 a televised singing competition took Afghanistan by storm. In a nation previously known for censorship of music and violations of women’s rights, a new precedent began to take shape. People of all ages and ethnic groups followed Afghan Star and cast their votes by mobile phone—a technology that had only recently become available. Though followed by a sea of controversy, Afghan Star has persisted for more than a decade and remains one of the most popular television programs in Afghanistan. Prior to the Taliban, Afghanistan already had a vibrant musical culture, but most people felt that playing music …
Fiddle Me This: A History And Discussion Of Old-Time Fiddle Tunes In Western New York, Christopher M. Fisher
Fiddle Me This: A History And Discussion Of Old-Time Fiddle Tunes In Western New York, Christopher M. Fisher
Theses
This thesis documents the history of fiddle tunes in Western New York from their introduction to the area in the mid-seventeenth century to the present day. Using a wide array of both primary sources and scholarly articles, I demonstrate the importance of this musical tradition. In addition, the thesis presents new primary and secondary sources created by the author in the spring of 2017, including the recording of interviews and performances and their presentation online. The primary research included interviews with three musicians, whom I ask, “How do these fiddle tunes continue to influence people today?” In these sessions with …
The Idiosyncratic Language Of Brazilian Music: Strategies For Performing Villa-Lobos Choros No. 10, Dennis Paz Leoni
The Idiosyncratic Language Of Brazilian Music: Strategies For Performing Villa-Lobos Choros No. 10, Dennis Paz Leoni
Dissertations
Heitor Villa-Lobos’ Choros No. 10 is a composition with many cultural and symbolic inclusions. This work seeks to support a conductor’s informed performance of the piece by providing historical and technical context from the conductor’s life and influences. The first section examines the ethnographic and sociopolitical factors in Brazil during the conductor’s life, and then the personal influences on Villa-Lobos’ career, in order to establish the foundation for a section-by-section analysis of the work which illuminates the idiosyncratic nature of the composer’s masterpiece.
A Study For Training And Building Up Worship Leaders For Spiritual Maturity And Revival In South Korea, Kyuhyuk Lee
A Study For Training And Building Up Worship Leaders For Spiritual Maturity And Revival In South Korea, Kyuhyuk Lee
Doctoral Dissertations and Projects
Worship leaders have become important ministers in worship since the 1990s in South Korea. However, South Korean churches rarely train and build up worship leaders because of the lack of recognition of the importance and expertise about worship leading. They have a false belief that the only role of worship leaders is to lead worship with musical skills. The purpose of this thesis project is to help worship leaders and their congregations to worship God correctly by presenting the concept and necessity for God-centered worship and principles for spiritually mature worship leaders. This study will examine the Bible and literature …
The Romanian Church Musician: Biblical Foundations For Training Musicians To Serve The Romanian Evangelical Church, Gary Mathena
The Romanian Church Musician: Biblical Foundations For Training Musicians To Serve The Romanian Evangelical Church, Gary Mathena
Doctoral Dissertations and Projects
Emanuel University of Oradea, Romania, was founded in 1986 as an underground training school for pastors and missionaries during the brutal regime of communist dictator Nicolae Ceaușescu. In December of 1989, Ceaușescu’s government was overthrown. The new democratic government not only officially recognized the school (then the Baptist Biblical Institute) as a theological seminary, but also commissioned the institution to train teachers for the newly emerging, publicly funded religious schools being established across the country. The school accepted that mandate and in 1998 changed its name to Emanuel University of Oradea. The music program began in those early days for …

The Female Percussionist: Social And Cultural Perspectives, Ksenija Komljenović
Open Access Dissertations
The purpose of this study was to explore the presence of and perceptions about professional female percussionists. The history of female participation in music in Western society reveals patterns of bias and segregation, in addition to progress made by those who fought for equality. Although a significant body of research has focused on gender instrument bias, the topic of female percussionists has been largely untended. Previous literature reveals several themes underlying this topic, including sex stereotyping of roles in music, instrument choice, childhood gender roles and their social context, role modeling in higher educational institutions, work-life balance, and reported issues …
Background Characteristics, Identity Issues, And Mentoring Process Perceptions Of Undergraduate Instrumentalists As Predictors Of Applied Music Teaching Success, Melissa J. Eick
Open Access Theses
The purpose of this study was to investigate background characteristics, teacher identity issues, and perceptions of the mentoring process of beginning applied music teachers in an undergraduate teaching program (N=13). The study also aimed to discover whether any of these qualities would determine the teaching success of the undergraduate students. The participants filled out a survey consisting of multiple choice questions, Likert-scale items, and open-ended questions. The survey responses revealed the background characteristics, teacher identity issues, and mentoring process perceptions of the participants. The undergraduate students were also evaluated using a performance-based teaching success rubric. Mann-Whitney U tests …

Mixing In Too Much Jewish: American Klezmorim In New York City From 1950-1970, Clara Byom
Mixing In Too Much Jewish: American Klezmorim In New York City From 1950-1970, Clara Byom
Music ETDs
In secular Jewish American music, the 1950s through 1970s are often viewed by scholars and musicians as a period of discontinuity. Building on Kirshenblatt-Gimblett’s (2002) call for a greater understanding of music from this time, I show that the work of second generation klezmorim, the children of immigrant klezmorim, maintained the traditional characteristics of their predecessors and foreshadowed the creative innovations of the klezmer revitalization beginning in the late 1970s. Drawing from recordings of select second generation klezmorim- Ray and Sammy Musiker, Sidney Beckerman, and Marty Levitt- and from interviews with Pete Sokolow, Dave Levitt, Margot Leverett, and other contemporary …

This thesis will study the history of Japanese music education philosophies and pedagogy techniques. Specific focus has been given to the music education methods and philosophies of renowned Japanese music educator, Shinichi Suzuki. Suzuki’s views on the learning processes of children have greatly impacted the field of music education. Suzuki held the belief that the language acquisition process and the learning processes of children were intricately connected. He spent years applying his research to the field of music education. His resulting pedagogy techniques are now known as the Suzuki Method. The Suzuki Method, which has been adapted in various ways …

Transmission Of Araquio Music, Songs, And Movement Conventions: Learning, Experience, And Meaning In Devotional Theatre, Florante P. Ibarra
Transmission Of Araquio Music, Songs, And Movement Conventions: Learning, Experience, And Meaning In Devotional Theatre, Florante P. Ibarra
The Qualitative Report
Araquio, a verse play on the search of the holy cross, is an indigenous folk theatre in the town of Peñaranda, province of Nueva Ecija, Philippines that has survived for over a hundred years. This ethnographic-phenomenological study explores the holistic nature of the transmission and learning processes of araquio music and songs as a theatre-ritual. Its transmission as a social phenomenon is an avenue for music learning that may in fact overshadow its being a diminishing tradition. Using the framework of three modes of enculturation (Merriam, 1964) and interpretation of culture (Geertz, 1973), I investigate the music transmission and learning …

Just Entertainment: Analyzing The Impacts Of The Narratives In Rap Music, Pamela Michelle Reed
Theses and Dissertations
Does rap music, rich in narratives and metaphors, play a role in shaping the values, beliefs, ideologies and subsequent behaviors of its listeners? We use narratives and proverbs to shape the values, morals, beliefs and subsequent behaviors of our children, so at what point in our lives do they stop functioning in the same manner? Can you recall the day or the moment when narratives no longer affected your belief systems and behaviors? The purpose of this research is to determine whether or not the narratives in rap music have an impact on the personal narratives of persons entering the …

Relational Power, Music, And Identity: The Emotional Efficacy Of Congregational Song, Nathan Myrick
Yale Journal of Music & Religion
Relational Power, Music, and Identity: The Emotional Efficacy of Congregational Song
The power of congregational song to unify (or divide) people along various lines is well documented. Yet, how this process of uniting or dividing is accomplished has proven necessarily difficult to document. This paper examines the complex and polyvalent factors that contribute to the meaningfulness of congregational music making, seeking to offer a synthetic, conceptual framework with which to engage this often murky milieu.
Employing interdisciplinary research techniques drawn from sociology, ritual studies, and ethnomusicology, I construct a conceptual framework with which to understand the profoundly formative power of …
