Music From Trinidad And Tobago, Vanessa Tuttle
Music From Trinidad And Tobago, Vanessa Tuttle
Capstone Projects and Master's Theses
This essay will explore the musical culture and customs that come from the Caribbean islands of Trinidad and Tobago. Some of the traditions examined include the usage of the steel pan as a percussive instrument, the evolution of Carnival music in Trinidad, and the various types of poetic styles used in calypso songs. In an effort to understand the development and importance of musical practices in Trinidad and Tobago, it will be vital to take an anthropological and historical look at the two islands. This means learning about how the various cultures of people came to exist in Trinidad and …
Fusiones Y Confusiones Del Concierto De Aranjuez En El Jazz: Reflexiones De Un Oyente, Antoni Pizà
Fusiones Y Confusiones Del Concierto De Aranjuez En El Jazz: Reflexiones De Un Oyente, Antoni Pizà
Publications and Research

Publications and Research
Reflections on Sketches of Spain (1960) by Miles Davis and Gil Evans, focusing on their jazz version of Joaquín Rodrigo’s Concierto de Aranjuez (1940). Motivated by Edward Said’s and Homi K. Bhabha’s writings, the recording is analyzed as a cultural artifact characterized by its “formal instability” and its typological “inbetweenness,” rendering it neither classical nor jazz; neither Spanish nor non-Spanish; and neither traditional nor modern, among other dualities. Sketches is an artwork that defies categories and inhabits the interstices of cultural expectations.

(Global) Hip Hop Studies Bibliography, Travis T. Harris, Travis Terrell Harris
(Global) Hip Hop Studies Bibliography, Travis T. Harris, Travis Terrell Harris
Journal of Hip Hop Studies
This bibliography documents Hip Hop scholarship outside of America, including scholarly works that may be US centric, yet expands its analysis to other parts of the world. Hip Hop Studies outside the boundaries of the United States stretches as far and wide as Hip Hop itself. This scholarship started in 1984, and the amount of scholarship beyond American boundaries has continued to grow up through present day. The first wave, before Mitchell's Global Noise (2001), includes a wider range of scholarly works such as conference presentations and books written by journalists, in addition to traditional academic sources such as books …

Protest Movements Of The 1960s - 1970s In Latin America And The United States, Jean Potter
Master of Arts in American Studies Capstones
Music is an integral part of a complex transcultural and political connection that exists between Latin America and the United States. Exploring the transnational culture of music in the Americas, this project considers the historical and socio-political issues which contribute to this transcultural relationship. The long history of colonization and exploitation by Spain, Britain, and the United States has left an indelible mark on Latin American economic, social and cultural environments. Looking at the continuing effects of the Western Industrial revolution, including its effects on class struggle, national independence movements and cultural developments, this project begins by summarizing and engaging …

Musical Aesthetics Of The Natural World: Two Modern Compositional Approaches, Eli Stine, Christopher Luna-Mega
Musical Aesthetics Of The Natural World: Two Modern Compositional Approaches, Eli Stine, Christopher Luna-Mega
Faculty Research, Scholarly, and Creative Activity
Throughout recorded human history, experiences and observations of the natural world have inspired the arts. Within the sonic arts, evocations of nature permeate a wide variety of acoustic and electronic composition strategies. These strategies artistically investigate diverse attributes of nature: tranquility, turbulence, abundance, scarcity, complexity, and purity, to name but a few. Within the 20th century, new technologies to understand these attributes, including media recording and scientific analysis, were developed. These technologies allow music composition strategies to go beyond mere evocation and to allow for the construction of musical works that engage explicit models of nature (what has been called …
Transforming Tradition In The Dance Drama Realizing Rama, 1997–2004: Documenting The Process Of “Inter-Creation” In An Asean Production, Nicanor G. Tiongson
Transforming Tradition In The Dance Drama Realizing Rama, 1997–2004: Documenting The Process Of “Inter-Creation” In An Asean Production, Nicanor G. Tiongson
Perspectives in the Arts and Humanities Asia
This article seeks to illumine two aspects of the pioneering production Realizing Rama (1997-2004), a collaboration among artists from the ASEAN. First, it will describe and critique the process of inter-creation among traditional and modern artists that gave birth to a production style that was palpably Southeast Asian in tonality, movement, and visuality without being stereotyped as “ethnic.” Second, it will explicate and evaluate the participation of ASEAN artists in the production and the changes they underwent in the process of creating and performing the work. This study will show that the creation of Realizing Rama paralleled the initial realization …

Ginggala: The Tai Yai’S Divine Gift Through Music And Dance, Maria Christine Muyco, Khanithep Pitupumnak
Perspectives in the Arts and Humanities Asia
In this article, the authors look at the present-day Tai Yai who live within the city of Chiang Mai but whose roots could be traced back to the Mae Hong Son Province. They practice a music and dance form called the ginggala inside the compound of the wat (temple), and in the streets during the end of the Buddhist Lent. By looking at each element of the ginggala—the people involved, the instruments used, the costumes, religious ceremonies, and parades of present-day street performances—the article traces the ginggala back to a mythic creature, half-bird and half-human, who welcomed Buddha in the …

An Integration Of East And West: History, Analysis And Reception Of The Yellow River Piano Concerto, Lin Tao
LSU Doctoral Dissertations
The Yellow River Piano Concerto remains as one of a few representative and major instrumental compositions within the Chinese repertoire since it was composed in 1969. Thanks to the devoted work of Chinese pianists, the Yellow River Piano Concerto has disseminated around the world and has become a musical symbol of Chinese culture in recent years. This piano concerto serves as a tool for the cultural communication between China and the world. The Yellow River Piano Concerto has a unique ability to depict Chinese culture and history through the language of music. Its exotic pentatonic melodies and eastern orchestrations make …

The Strategies And Risks Of Performing Citizenship And Rights Through Music, Carolin Mueller
The Strategies And Risks Of Performing Citizenship And Rights Through Music, Carolin Mueller
Biennial Conference: The Social Practice of Human Rights
My work explores the capacity of cultural producers to perform “insurgent citizenship,” a term theorized by James Holsten (2008) to describe how the peripheries of social organization can propel alternative modes of civic participation, through music. I utilize Engin Isin’s performative dimension of citizenship (2017) to investigate such forms of insurgent citizenship as they evolve in social and cultural peripheries of the contemporary arts and culture industry in the city of Dresden, Germany to identify the pathways they open to socio-political participation and autonomy for refugees.
While Germany understands itself as a nation of culture, cultural policy unevenly addresses the …

Hate Music On Youtube: The Dark Side Of Advancing Digital Freedom In Myanmar, Heather Maclachlan
Biennial Conference: The Social Practice of Human Rights
The International Fact-Finding Mission of the United Nations has condemned Myanmar’s treatment of Rohingya people as one of the world’s worst instances of ethnic cleansing, calling it “genocidal in intent.” The Rohingya are only one of many Muslim communities in Myanmar, a number of which have been subject to violent attacks by Buddhists in recent years (Wade 2017). This presentation explains the role that music plays in fostering anti-Muslim prejudice in the country’s majority Buddhist population. I present an analysis of the lyrics and accompanying videos of a corpus of recently recorded songs, all available on Youtube, and argue that …
Qualities Of Transformational Learning In The High School Orchestra Classroom: A Heuristic Study, Linda F. Versprille
Qualities Of Transformational Learning In The High School Orchestra Classroom: A Heuristic Study, Linda F. Versprille
CUP Ed.D. Dissertations
High school orchestra students demonstrate a high degree of comfort in the orchestra classroom by spending out-of-class time in the room. Climate inventories do not address the constituents’ particular to the experience of the orchestra student. This heuristic phenomenological study explored the identification and description of qualities of transformational learning in the high school orchestra classroom that contributes to a positive classroom learning environment. Six seasoned high school orchestra directors with a minimum of ten years of experience participated in semistructured interviews to recall events during their high school years or as a teacher. Each was able to provide anecdotal …
