Recording Studios Since 1970, Eliot Bates
Recording Studios Since 1970, Eliot Bates
Publications and Research
Like many other specialty, purpose-built spaces, we tend to think of recording studios in instrumental terms, meaning that the space is defined in relation to the nominal type of work that the space is instrumental towards. While audio recordings have been made in spaces since 1877, not all of these spaces tend to be regarded as recording studios, partly since so many recordings were made in environments designed for other types of work; indeed, much of the first seventy years of US and UK recorded music history transpired at radio stations, concert halls and lightly treated mixed-use commercial spaces (e.g. …

A Heavy Rain Has Fallen Upon My People: Sindhi Sufi Poetry Performance, Emotion, And Islamic Knowledge In Kachchh, Gujarat, Brian E. Bond
Dissertations, Theses, and Capstone Projects
This dissertation is a study of the use and contestation of Sindhi-language Sufi poetry performance as a means of Islamic knowledge transmission and ethical self-formation in rural Muslim communities in Kachchh, a border district in the western Indian state of Gujarat adjacent to Sindh, Pakistan. Drawing on eighteen months of ethnographic research with Muslim performers and enthusiasts of Sindhi poetry between 2014-2018, I first examine an ecology of performative and interpretive practices revolving around the musico-poetic repertoire of the poet-saint Shāh ʿAbdul Lat̤īf Bhiṭā’ī (1689-1752 CE). I argue that the pedagogical efficacy of Sufi poetry performance is undergirded by its …

Psychology Faculty Research
Many foundational questions in the psychology of music require cross-cultural approaches, yet the vast majority of work in the field to date has been conducted with Western participants and Western music. For cross-cultural research to thrive, it will require collaboration between people from different disciplinary backgrounds, as well as strategies for overcoming differences in assumptions, methods, and terminology. This position paper surveys the current state of the field and offers a number of concrete recommendations focused on issues involving ethics, empirical methods, and definitions of “music” and “culture.”

Basque Radical Rock: The Punk Ethos In Basque Identity, Edurne Arostegui
Basque Radical Rock: The Punk Ethos In Basque Identity, Edurne Arostegui
BOGA: Basque Studies Consortium Journal
This paper aims to chart the origins of the so-called Basque Radical Rock movement and its varied use by different social groups, from political organizations of the time to anarchist, marginalized youth needing to express the pessimistic view of their present circumstances. Basque Radical Rock represented a growing sense of modern Basqueness and difference that shaped the scene, moving away from pastoral images toward urban decadence. Although politics did influence the growth and spread of music throughout the Basque Country, many did not feel represented by these causes. The youth’s backlash against socio-economic conditions and their nihilistic view of the …
Mimicry As Movement Analysis, Rosa Abrahams
Mimicry As Movement Analysis, Rosa Abrahams
Faculty Publications
The analysis of movement to music often stems from examinations of video-recorded events. This allows the analyst an opportunity to re-watch, pause, and slow down the movements of their participants, and to produce descriptive notation that appears alongside a score (e.g., Roeder and Tenzer 2012). Unlike prescriptive forms of dance notation (e.g., Laban 1928), such transcriptions of movement often illuminate metrical connections between music and movement. However, when video-recording is not permissible, other methods of movement analysis must be developed. This paper pilots a new technique for rigorous analysis of the interaction between movement and music, which may be used …

Making Sound Decisions: Institutional Responses To The Crisis In Audio Preservation, David R. Lewis
Making Sound Decisions: Institutional Responses To The Crisis In Audio Preservation, David R. Lewis
University Libraries Faculty Publications
Some archives have been quick to respond to the crisis in audio preservation brought on by the combined forces of obsolescence and degradation inherent in legacy audio formats and their playback equipment. These archives have undertaken digitization projects for particular collections or, in a few cases, have digitized the bulk of their audio holdings for preservation. Based on an examination of the literature on audio preservation, however, the responses of some institutions—particularly small and midsized institutions—have been stymied by roadblocks related to cost and expertise. Given the limited time available for archives to migrate audio content, this uneven response threatens …

“Because We Are Catholic”: Music As A Bridge Between Identities Within The Catholic Community Of South India, Johnathan Theodore Travis Rhodes
“Because We Are Catholic”: Music As A Bridge Between Identities Within The Catholic Community Of South India, Johnathan Theodore Travis Rhodes
Electronic Theses and Dissertations
In this thesis, I argue that the music of the Catholic Church of South India, which draws from Indian and Western music genres, functions as a cultural bridge allowing the worshiper to express a distinctively Catholic identity without distancing themselves from their Hindu roots. This cultural connection reinterprets Karnatak musical styles, practices, and traditions as distinctively Catholic rather than Indian or Hindu. Thus, Indian cultures are recontextualized within a Catholic paradigm, as these practices are regarded as Catholic regardless of their historical, cultural, or religious origin. These identities, Indian and Catholic, are not in tension with one another, but instead, …
Guillaume De Machaut’S Legacy: Representation And Self-Representation In Medieval France, Azure Maxwell
Guillaume De Machaut’S Legacy: Representation And Self-Representation In Medieval France, Azure Maxwell
Theses & ETDs
This thesis considers the legacy of 14th-century French poet and musician, Guillaume de Machaut, focusing on instances of self-presentation in Le Livre dou Voir Dit and how that is reflected in both the scholarly record and contemporary representations of the neo-medieval. The Voir Dit foregrounds the first-person narrative and the poet-narrator figure common in dits from the late Middle Ages, yet goes further by promising to recount a true (voir) story. My first chapter examines scholarly debates over truth and accuracy surrounding Machaut and his Voir Dit, because very little information about Machaut’s life survives other than what he himself …

Más Allá Del Nacionalismo: Fronteras Disciplinarias De Los Estudios Musicales Centroamericanos [Beyond Nationalism: Disciplinary Frontiers Of Central American Music Studies], Andrés R. Amado
School of Music Faculty Publications
The Rong Ngeng Of The Andaman Coast : History, Ecology, And The Preservation Of A Traditional Performing Art, Lawrence Ross
The Rong Ngeng Of The Andaman Coast : History, Ecology, And The Preservation Of A Traditional Performing Art, Lawrence Ross
Manusya, Journal of Humanities
This article examines recent grassroots strategies for preserving traditional performing arts along southern Thailand’s Andaman Sea Coast, focusing on rong ngeng, an idiomatic form of social dance and music, widely popular there in the post-World War Two years. Between 1935 and 1960 a small, mixed cohort of rural performing artists created networks of communities, scattered on Thai-Andaman, with a distinctive regional culture based in the shared repertoire of songs and dances they adapted, created an innovative lyrical style called phleng tanyong (Tanyong song), and a star system that turned village performers into local celebrities (Ross 2017, 68). More than …

Dyeing The Springtime: The Art And Poetry Of Fleeting Textile Colors In Medieval And Early Modern South Asia, Sylvia W. Houghteling
Dyeing The Springtime: The Art And Poetry Of Fleeting Textile Colors In Medieval And Early Modern South Asia, Sylvia W. Houghteling
History of Art Faculty Research and Scholarship
This paper explores the metaphorical and material significance of short-lived fabric dyes in medieval and early modern South Asian art, literature, and religious practice. It explores dyers’ manuals, paintings, textiles, and mercantile and devotional poetry to demonstrate how the existence of ephemeral dyes opened up possibilities for mutability that cannot be found within more stable, mineral pigments, set down on paper in painting. While the relationship between the image and the word in South Asian art is most often mutually enhancing, the relationship between words and color, and particularly between poetry and dye color, operates on a much more slippery …

Emporium By Aldo Lpez-Gaviln: A Declaration Of Unity, Dawson Andrew Hull
Electronic Theses and Dissertations Archive
Cuban pianist and composer Aldo Lpez-Gaviln is known for excelling in both classical and jazz worlds. He stands not only between two musical worlds, but also between Cuba and the United States, in the midst of their turbulent relationship. In 2017, he wrote and premiered his first piano concerto, Emporium, stating that the purpose of the work is to unify the world. He fosters this unity through the combination of music from different cultures and styles, including classical, Cuban, and jazz, and through the emphasis on musical unity seen in the form of work. The tensions between the United States …
The Influence Of Santería In Leo Brouwer's Solo Guitar Works (1955–1993), Eoin Flood
The Influence Of Santería In Leo Brouwer's Solo Guitar Works (1955–1993), Eoin Flood
Doctoral
This study will assess the solo guitar works of Cuban composer Leo Brouwer (1939–present) in terms of influence from Santería, a ritual music derived from WestAfrican slaves and still practised in Cuba. This will be achieved by using both analytical and evaluative processes. For the former, a range of influential parameters have been identified, each falling under three strands: rhythmic and metric, structural, and melodic. These will be revealed in all of Brouwer’s solo guitar works written from 1955 to 1993. A parameter’s influence can be revealed in two ways: the multitude of its usage per piece, or the percentage …

Singing Out: Gala Choruses And Social Change, Heather Maclachlan
Singing Out: Gala Choruses And Social Change, Heather Maclachlan
Books and Book Chapters by University of Dayton Faculty
Can you change the world through song? This appealing idea has long been the professed aim of singers who are part of choruses affiliated with the Gay and Lesbian Association of Choruses (GALA). Theses choruses first emerged in the 1970s, and grew out of a very American tradition of (often gender-segregated) choral singing that explicitly presents itself as a community-based activity. By taking a close look at these choruses and their mission, Heather MacLachlan unpacks the fascinating historical and cultural dynamics behind groups that seek to change society for the better by encouraging acceptance of LGBT-identified people and promoting diversity …

Ancient Mesopotamian Music, The Politics Of Reconstruction, And Extreme Early Music, Samuel N. Dorf
Books and Book Chapters by University of Dayton Faculty
I write this piece primarily as a musicologist and amateur early music practitioner (viola da gamba player) who tries to understand the ways twentieth- and twenty-first century musicians and scholars have imagined and performed ancient music and dance. This essay emerged from my book project Performing Antiquity: Ancient Greek Music and Dance from Paris to Delphi, 1890-1935 and brings my training as a historical musicologist and dance historian to bear on issues typically of concern to archaeologists, classicists, and linguists.
While working on that book, I kept running across a number of individuals working now who are deeply engaged in …
