On Explaining Why The (Human) World Is Rich, Bart J. Wilson Sep 2024

On Explaining Why The (Human) World Is Rich, Bart J. Wilson

ESI Working Papers

The wealth of the modern world is a natural historical marvel. Explaining it has traditionally been the purview of economic historians, as exemplified by the recent book How the World Became Rich by Mark Koyama and Jared Rubin. Economic historians, though, tend to only ask process-oriented “how” questions and “by what means” questions of the Great Enrichment. The eight co-authors of Explaining Technology, who are not economic historians, engage the debate asking a different question. Their goal is to explain the exponential shape of our enrichment with a model of the combinatorial evolution of technology. With an eye toward how …

Recent Advancements In Cell-Based Therapies In Melanoma, George Nassief, Angela Anaeme, Karen Moussa, Abdallah N Mansour, George Ansstas

2020-Current year OA Pubs

Malignant melanoma outcomes have drastically changed in recent years due to the introduction of immune checkpoint inhibitors (ICIs). However, many patients still experience intolerable side effects, therapy resistance, and disease progression on ICI therapy. Therefore, there remains a need for novel therapeutics that address this gap in treatment options. Cell-based therapies have gained wide attention as a therapeutic option that could address this gap in treatment options for advanced melanoma. These therapies work by extracting certain cell types produced in the human body such as T-cells, modifying them based on a specific target, and transfusing them back into the patient. …

Race And The Manufacturing Workforce: Opportunities To Expand Growth And Equity In A Rebounding Industry Sector, Benjamin Armstrong, Matthew D. Wilson, Nichola J. Lowe Sep 2024

Race And The Manufacturing Workforce: Opportunities To Expand Growth And Equity In A Rebounding Industry Sector, Benjamin Armstrong, Matthew D. Wilson, Nichola J. Lowe

Upjohn Institute Policy Papers

This paper provides an overview of the manufacturing work experience of different racial groups. Our goal is to lend support to “middle-out” policy responses that seek to promote greater economic opportunity across the country through targeted sector growth, including manufacturing, while also bringing together people of all races in support of manufacturing regeneration. By pinpointing persistent inequities in U.S. manufacturing, we hope to embolden policy responses that ensure that as the manufacturing sector rebounds and continues to evolve, its high-paying, good-quality jobs are also more inclusive of workers of color.

Discovery Of Small Molecules To Alleviate Heart Disease-Induced Proteinopathy And Proteotoxicity Characteristic Of Alzheimer’S Disease, Nirjal Mainali Sep 2024

Discovery Of Small Molecules To Alleviate Heart Disease-Induced Proteinopathy And Proteotoxicity Characteristic Of Alzheimer’S Disease, Nirjal Mainali

Theses and Dissertations

Cardiovascular disease (CVD) is the leading cause of death in the world and in the United States. Reduced cardiac output due to CVD has been previously associated with decreases in systemic and cerebral perfusion. Cerebral hypoperfusion increases the risk of Alzheimer’s disease (AD), accompanied by accumulation of aggregates that feature Aβ amyloid and hyperphosphorylated tau. Protein aggregation is a shared hallmark of aging and neurodegenerative diseases. We previously reported elevated aggregation in hearts of hypertensive and aged mice and now find that aggregation is induced in hearts and brains of male C57BL/6 mice after transient ligation of the left coronary …

Mesenchymal stem/stromal cells (MSCs) are an attractive platform for cell therapy due to their safety profile and unique ability to secrete broad arrays of immunomodulatory and regenerative molecules. Yet, MSCs are well known to require preconditioning or priming to boost their therapeutic efficacy. Current priming methods offer limited control over MSC activation, yield transient effects, and often induce the expression of pro-inflammatory effectors that can potentiate immunogenicity. Here, we describe a genetic priming method that can both selectively and sustainably boost MSC potency via the controlled expression of the inflammatory-stimulus-responsive transcription factor interferon response factor 1 (IRF1). MSCs engineered to …

Internal combustion engine fueled by carbon-free hydrogen (H2-ICE) offers a promising alternative for sustainable transportation. Herein, we report a facile and universal strategy through the physical mixing of Pt catalyst with zeolites to significantly improve the catalytic performance in the selective catalytic reduction of nitrogen oxides (NOx) with H2 (H2-SCR), a process aiming at NOx removal from H2-ICE. Via the physical mixing of Pt/TiO2 with Y zeolite (Pt/TiO2 + Y), a remarkable enhancement of NOx reduction activity and N2 selectivity was simultaneously achieved. The incorporation of Y zeolite effectively captured the in-situ generated water, fostering a water-rich environment surrounding the …

Expanding The Crispr Base Editing Toolbox In Drosophila Melanogaster, Michael Clark, Christina Nguyen, Hung Nguyen, Aidan Tay, Samuel J Beach, Maciej Maselko, Víctor López Del Amo

Faculty, Staff and Student Publications

CRISPR base editors can introduce point mutations into DNA precisely, and cytosine base editors (CBEs) catalyze C to T transitions. While CBEs have been thoroughly explored in cell culture and organisms such as mice, little is known about DNA base editing in insects. In this study, we evaluated germline editing rates of three different CBEs expressed under actin (ubiquitous) or nanos (germline) promoters utilizing Drosophila melanogaster. The original Rattus norvegicus-derived cytosine deaminase APOBEC1 (rAPO-1) displayed high base editing rates (~99%) with undetectable indel formation. Additionally, we show that base editors can be used for generating male sterility and female lethality. …

Barriers And Opportunities In Pancreatic Cancer Immunotherapy, Yixin Ju, Dongzhi Xu, Miao-Miao Liao, Yutong Sun, Wen-Dai Bao, Fan Yao, Li Ma

Faculty, Staff and Student Publications

Pancreatic ductal adenocarcinoma (PDAC) presents a fatal clinical challenge characterized by a dismal 5-year overall survival rate, primarily due to the lack of early diagnosis and limited therapeutic efficacy. Immunotherapy, a proven success in multiple cancers, has yet to demonstrate significant benefits in PDAC. Recent studies have revealed the immunosuppressive characteristics of the PDAC tumor microenvironment (TME), including immune cells with suppressive properties, desmoplastic stroma, microbiome influences, and PDAC-specific signaling pathways. In this article, we review recent advances in understanding the immunosuppressive TME of PDAC, TME differences among various mouse models of pancreatic cancer, and the mechanisms underlying resistance to …

Modulational Instability Of Nonuniformly Damped, Broad-Banded Waves: Applications To Waves In Sea Ice, Raphael Stuhlmeier, Conor Heffernan, Alberto Alberello, Emilian Pǎrǎu Sep 2024

Modulational Instability Of Nonuniformly Damped, Broad-Banded Waves: Applications To Waves In Sea Ice, Raphael Stuhlmeier, Conor Heffernan, Alberto Alberello, Emilian Pǎrǎu

School of Engineering, Computing and Mathematics

This paper sets out to explore the modulational (or Benjamin-Feir) instability of a monochromatic wave propagating in the presence of damping such as that induced by sea ice on the ocean surface. The fundamental wave motion is modelled using the spatial Zakharov equation, to which either uniform or nonuniform (frequency-dependent) damping is added. By means of mode truncation the spatial analog of the classical Benjamin-Feir instability can be studied analytically using dynamical systems techniques. The formulation readily yields the free surface and its envelope, giving insight into the physical implications of damping on the modulational instability. The evolution of an …

What Is Old Is New Again: The Reintegration Of Dresden’S Landscape Into The Modern German State, Richard Wolfel Sep 2024

What Is Old Is New Again: The Reintegration Of Dresden’S Landscape Into The Modern German State, Richard Wolfel

The Geographical Bulletin

This paper examines the architecture of Dresden in the era of East/West reunification. Traditional theories of German national development have identified three foci for post-World War II development, the Geopolitics of Nostalgia that seeks to return German national identity to an era prior to World War II, Zero Point thinking that seeks to build a new Germany from the ashes of World War II and critical preservation has sought to preserve some Nazi landscapes in an effort to facilitate discussion on the controversial era. Being an East German city, however, Dresden was isolated from the development of West German identity …

Data-Driven Mathematical Modeling And Simulation Of Migration Dynamics During The Russian-Ukrainian War, Danielle Sitalo, Alonso Ogueda-Oliva, Padmanabhan Seshaiyer Sep 2024

Data-Driven Mathematical Modeling And Simulation Of Migration Dynamics During The Russian-Ukrainian War, Danielle Sitalo, Alonso Ogueda-Oliva, Padmanabhan Seshaiyer

Spora: A Journal of Biomathematics

In this work, we employ a governing system of ordinary differential equations (ODEs) to create a mathematical model for getting insights into the dynamics of migration of Ukrainians evacuating due to war. A suitable assumption on coefficients of this model results in the well-known logistic growth. Additionally, stability analyses of equilibrium solutions for these ODEs are performed, and we employ parameter estimation techniques to identify coefficients using online datasets via both a least-squares approach as well as a physics informed neural network approach. Our findings indicate that over time, the daily influx of Ukrainian refugees to Poland stabilizes at a …

Application Of Haines And Terbrugge Chart For Suitable Slope Angles – A Case Study Of Artisanal And Small-Scale Mining, Carol Mgiba, Steven Rupprecht

Journal of Sustainable Mining

Significant hazards in Artisanal and small-scale mining (ASM) are rock failure and slope collapse caused by overly steep pit walls, poor mine design and water pressure. There is a lack of expertise and capital in ASM. Providing a simple and cost-effective slope stability analysis and designing systems that can mitigate the risk of slope collapse is essential. This article aims to assess whether stability charts and estimations can be used to establish suitable slope angles to mitigate the overwhelming cases of slope collapse in ASM. The Bieniawski’s Rock Mass Rating system and Heins and Terbrugge stability chart were used to …

Automated Internationalization Testing Using A Large Language Model, Tracy Wang, Wendy Dai Sep 2024

Automated Internationalization Testing Using A Large Language Model, Tracy Wang, Wendy Dai

Defensive Publications Series

Localization processes ensure that devices and software function correctly and consistently across different languages and for users of different cultures. Internationalization (i18n) testing is an important component of the localization process. Traditional i18n testing techniques are time-consuming, expensive, and difficult to scale since such testing involves substantial manual work. Furthermore, the tests can be of variable quality. This disclosure describes the use of a large language model (LLM) to automatically generate test cases for various internationalization (i18n) scenarios and to validate results generated by the software under test. Test cases are automatically generated by using a LLM to translate to …
