Pre-Service Teachers’ Attitudes About Gender, Education, And Mathematical Aptitude: A Quantitative Study, Paige Barnett

Venture: The University of Mississippi Undergraduate Research Journal

Females and mathematics are often not grouped together due to the gender bias surrounding the two. Perhaps attending an all-girls high school has instilled a higher level of confidence in my own mathematical abilities than many women exhibit. The focus of my research is to examine preservice elementary teachers for their confidence levels in mathematics, as well as whether they hold a form of unconscious gender bias. I completed this research by developing a six-question survey instrument. The survey was administered in the spring and fall of 2023 to Math 245 and Math 246 classes, both of which are required …

Mental Model-Based Designs: The Study In Privacy Policy Landscape, Hanieh Atashpanjeh, Rizu Paudel, Mahdi Nasrullah Al-Ameen

Computer Science Student Research

Users' mental models influence secure and privacy-preserving behavior in a computing environment. Prior studies on users' mental models of Internet, security tools, and digital privacy show that there is no one-size-fits-all solution when it comes to security and privacy design. However, little study to date has explored the ways to translate users' mental models into interactive security and privacy designs. As we begin to address this gap, we focus on privacy policy in this paper. The typical text-based privacy policy suffers from poor readability and usability. A recent study proposed a Visual Interactive Privacy Policy (VIPP), showing promise to offer …

Manuscripts, Articles, Book Chapters and Other Papers

Assessment of minimal residual disease (MRD) is the most powerful predictor of outcome in B-type acute lymphoblastic leukemia (B-ALL). MRD, defined as the presence of leukemic cells in the blood or bone marrow, is used for the evaluation of therapy efficacy. We report on a microfluidic-based MRD (MF-MRD) assay that allows for frequent evaluation of blood for the presence of circulating leukemia cells (CLCs). The microfluidic chip affinity selects B-lineage cells, including CLCs using anti-CD19 antibodies poised on the wall of the microfluidic chip. Affinity-selected cells are released from the capture surface and can be subjected to immunophenotyping to enumerate …

Evaluation Of Bridge Deterioration Factors: From Design Parameters To Community Impact., Lawrencia Akuffo

Theses and Dissertations

The structural health and economic variables influencing the state of bridges in New Jersey are thoroughly examined in this thesis. The predictive modeling of bridge conditions using stepwise selection and linear logistic regression approaches is the primary focus of the opening chapter. With its precise predictions about bridge condition, either being fair/good, our model offers insightful information about resource allocation and maintenance by identifying bridge features which affect the deterioration of bridges the most. This gives effective infrastructure management, which not only relies on the identification of the important predictors and their effects on bridge conditions but also ranks them …

Predictive Residual Neural Networks For Optical Trapping Of Small Particles, Nasim Mohammadi Estrakhri, Ponthea Zahraii, Saman Kashanchi, Nooshin M. Estakhri

Engineering Faculty Articles and Research

Optical tweezers provide a non-contact method to trap, move, and manipulate micro- and nano-sized objects. Using properly designed dielectric and plasmonic nanostructure configurations, optical tweezers have been tailored to create stable and precise trapping for nanoscale objects. Recent advances in numerical optimization techniques allow further enhancement in nanoscale optical traps through inverse optimization of such configurations. One of the main challenges in such optimization approaches is the time-consuming nature of full-wave simulation of nanostructures and postprocessing steps to extract optical forces. To address this challenge, we introduce a surrogate solver based on residual neural networks that can accurately predict the …

Restoring The Citizenship Of The Soldier, Chandler B. Cole Oct 2024

Restoring The Citizenship Of The Soldier, Chandler B. Cole

Duke Law Journal

Modern jurisprudence consistently treats the U.S. military as legally distinct, imposing different standards for service members’ constitutional rights, Federal Tort Claims Act lawsuits, and Title VII protections than it does for their civilian counterparts. The legal foundation for this treatment relies in large part on the constitutional military structure, which empowers Congress to prescribe rules and regulations for the “land and naval Forces” and exercise extensive power over “armies.” Usually, both entities—armies and the larger “land and naval Forces”—are considered synonymous with the modern-day all-volunteer force (“AVF”). This interpretation, though, neglects the foundational role the constitutional militia played in composing …

GM Ignition Switch. Dalkon Shield. Oxycontin. For decades, protective orders—court orders that require parties to maintain the confidentiality of information unearthed during discovery—have hid deadly defects and pervasive abuse from the public, perpetuating unnecessary harm.

But how worrisome are these protective orders, really? Under Rule 26(c)’s plain language, protective orders are to be granted only upon a showing of “good cause.” Doesn’t that adequately cabin the orders’ entry? Prominent judges and scholars have long insisted it does, and that, under Rule 26(c), the day-to-day grant of protective orders is careful, not cavalier. Critics disagree. They charge that parties frequently agree …
