Solving The Shortest Path Problem In An Interval-Valued Neutrosophic Pythagorean Environment Using An Enhanced A* Search Algorithm, Prasanta Kumar Raut, Sakya Singh Satapathy, Siva Prasad Behera, Said Broumi, Ajay Kumar Sahoo
Neutrosophic Sets and Systems
The A* search algorithm is widely utilized to evaluate the shortest path in a given network. However, in a traditional A* search algorithm, the nodes are assumed to have crisp values, i.e., a single value. This assumption may not hold in many real-world scenarios where uncertainty or ambiguity is involved. In such cases, an interval-valued Neutrosophic Pythagorean (IVNP) environment can provide a more sound and accurate representation. Interval-valued Neutrosophic Pythagorean sets (IVNPS) are an effective way to model vague and imprecise data, which is prevalent in executive problems. These sets provide a more flexible way to capture uncertainty by allowing …

A Python Class For Neutrosophic Morphology, Lorenzo Affe, Giorgio Nordo, Florentin Smarandache
Neutrosophic Sets and Systems
In this work, we introduce a Python class, named NSmorph, developed to facilitate image manip ulation through neutrosophic morphological operations. This innovative approach extends traditional image processing methods by leveraging the flexibility of neutrosophic logic to handle uncertainty, indeterminacy, and noise in digital images. The class offers implementations of essential morphological operators, such as neu trosophic dilation, erosion, opening, and closing, providing a robust tool for applications where image clarity is often compromised, like medical imaging and surveillance. We detail the class structure and functions and provide multiple examples to demonstrate its practical applications and comparative advantages over classical morphological …

Spring Valley, Washington Dc: Changing Land Use And Demographics From 1900-2000, Benefsheh D. Verell
The Geographical Bulletin
Spring Valley, located in northwest Washington D.C., has had a dynamic land use history, changing from farmland to military base to residential development during the span of one hundred years. The development and marketing of Spring Valley in the 1930s and 1940s reflects the changing socioeconomics and settlement patterns of D.C. The data suggest a “white flight” out of the inner-city neighborhoods to Spring Valley and the surrounding suburbs. Additionally, Spring Valley, as a Formerly Used Defense Site, presents environmental hazards to the current residential community. The Army’s response to this hazard demonstrates changes in military environmental policies from nonexistent …

Remote Sensing Quantification Of Wetland Habitat Change In South Carolina: Implications For Coastal Resource Policy, John All, Jenna Nelson
The Geographical Bulletin
Increased urbanization of coastal areas has resulted in the pollution and destruction of wetland ecosystems worldwide. The effect of development on local wetland habitat was examined for Mount Pleasant, South Carolina, USA. Changes in the areal extent of wetlands in Mount Pleasant were determined through a quantification of changes in wetland margins from the 1970s to 1990s using Landsat data. The rate of wetland habitat loss accelerated from the 1980s to 1990s compared to the 1970s, even though coastal zone regulations had been strengthened and the rate of population increase was comparable for the decades selected for comparison. This paper …

Objective: Deep brain stimulation, particularly low-frequency stimulation (LFS) targeting fiber tracts, has emerged as a potential therapy for drug-resistant epilepsy (DRE) and for generalized epilepsy, both of which pose significant treatment challenges. LFS diffusely suppresses seizures in the cortex when applied to fiber tracts like the corpus callosum (CC). Nevertheless, the specific processes responsible for suppressing epileptic activity in the cortex induced by LFS remain unclear. This study investigates the mechanisms underlying the antiepileptic effect in the cortex of LFS of the CC in coronal rodent brain slices. Methods: An in vitro 4-aminopyridine (4-AP) seizure model of cortical seizures was …

Starting in the 1970s, individuals, businesses and the public have increasingly benefited from policies prohibiting smoking indoors, saving thousands of lives and billions of dollars in healthcare expenditures. Smokefree policies to protect against secondhand smoke exposure, however, do not fully protect the public from the persistent and toxic chemical residues from tobacco smoke (also known as thirdhand smoke) that linger in indoor environments for years after smoking stops. Nor do these policies address the economic costs that individuals, businesses and the public bear in their attempts to remediate this toxic residue. We discuss policy-relevant differences between secondhand smoke and thirdhand …

Interpreting Black-Box Time Series Classifiers Using Parameterised Event Primitives, Ephrem Tibebe Mekonnen, Luca Longo, Pierpaolo Dondio
Conference papers
Amidst the remarkable performance of deep learning models in time series classification, there is a pressing demand for methods that unveil their prediction rationale. Existing feature importance techniques often neglect the temporal nature of time series data, focusing solely on segment importance. Addressing this gap, this paper introduces a local model-agnostic method akin to LIME, which generates neighbouring samples by randomly perturbing segments of the original instance. Subsequently, weights are computed for each neighbouring instance based on its distance from the original, elucidating its influence. Parameterised event primitives (PEPs) are then extracted from these perturbed samples, encompassing increasing and decreasing …

Despite the growing variety of sequencing and variant-calling tools, no workflow performs equally well across the entire human genome. Understanding context-dependent performance is critical for enabling researchers, clinicians, and developers to make informed tradeoffs when selecting sequencing hardware and software. Here we describe a set of “stratifications,” which are BED files that define distinct contexts throughout the genome. We define these for GRCh37/38 as well as the new T2T-CHM13 reference, adding many new hard-to-sequence regions which are critical for understanding performance as the field progresses. Specifically, we highlight the increase in hard-to-map and GC-rich stratifications in CHM13 relative to the …

From Sparta To Hostomel: The Enduring Role Of Joint Forcible Entry Operations, Jonathan Maxwell Cohen
From Sparta To Hostomel: The Enduring Role Of Joint Forcible Entry Operations, Jonathan Maxwell Cohen
Joint Force Quarterly
This article argues that joint forcible entry operations remain relevant despite the growing threat posed by antiaccess/area-denial networks. Using the Russian assault on Hostomel Airport during the opening phase of the 2022 invasion of Ukraine as a case study, the author contends that the operation failed not because forcible entry had become obsolete, but because Russian forces were unable to isolate and expand the lodgment, protect access for follow-on forces, and integrate maneuver and supporting fires effectively. The article traces the historical development of forcible entry from ancient amphibious operations through airborne and air assault doctrine, then applies lessons from …

Cbrn Defense Readiness Reporting, Jeffrey A. French-Lujan, Taylor Harrington, Ron Fizer, Domah Diggs
Joint Force Quarterly
This article argues that the Department of Defense lacks a sufficiently standardized system for assessing and reporting chemical, biological, radiological, and nuclear defense readiness across the joint force. Although the Defense Readiness Reporting System provides common measures for personnel, equipment, materiel condition, and training, current CBRN reporting requirements rely too heavily on subjective assessments and can overstate a unit’s actual ability to operate in a contaminated environment. Using the Marine Corps as a case study, the authors show how standardized training and equipment metrics can provide commanders with a more accurate picture of CBRN preparedness and operational risk. They contend …

The Key To Arctic Dominance: Establishing An Arctic-Focused Subordinate Unified Command, Joseph R. Blume, Nathan L. Golike, Geoffrey R. Latimer, Michael Stanski
Joint Force Quarterly
This article argues that the United States should establish an Arctic-focused subordinate unified command under U.S. Northern Command to improve unity of command, resource management, and coordination in a region of growing strategic importance. The authors contend that current responsibility for Arctic operations, divided among U.S. Northern Command, U.S. European Command, and U.S. Indo-Pacific Command, complicates command and control and weakens unity of effort. They trace how reduced sea ice, expanding shipping and resource access, Russia’s military modernization, and China’s growing Arctic activity are increasing competition and security demands in the region. After comparing subordinate unified commands, joint task forces, …
