The seismic reflection data provided good-resolution images of subsurface structures, enabling the identification of fault planes and associated geological formations. …
Deadly Deterrence: Border Patrol Authority, Pursuits, And Deported Witnesses, Shaw Drake
Deadly Deterrence: Border Patrol Authority, Pursuits, And Deported Witnesses, Shaw Drake
San Diego Law Review
Since 1994, the United States has perpetrated a border policy based on the idea that tougher enforcement will mean fewer people will cross the border—termed “prevention through deterrence.” But this idea has never fulfilled its stated aim and has turned into something resembling a border ideology rather than a border policy based in fact and reality. The results have been deadly.
This Article examines a small slice of the results of this deadly border policy as it looks at Border Patrol vehicle pursuits and the deportation of those who witness Border Patrol misconduct. It also provides an overview of the …

Fibre-reinforced polymeric composites utilized in aerospace settings, experience varying environmental conditions throughout their operational lifespan. The major factors that can have adverse effects on their long-term performance are water and temperature. The present study investigates how the determinants such as water and temperature impact the structural integrity of plain weave woven carbon/epoxy laminated composites and further categorizing them into compacted and non-compacted groups. The compacted group involves in-process compactions during composite lay-up and the use of bleeders/breathers around the laminate, whereas the non-compacted group lacks these procedures. Specimens comprising twelve plies are created and submerged in water heating chambers set …

Metaplastic breast cancer (MpBC) is a highly chemoresistant subtype of breast cancer with no standardized therapy options. A clinical study in anthracycline-refractory MpBC patients suggested that nitric oxide synthase (NOS) inhibitor NG-monomethyl-l-arginine (L-NMMA) may augment anti-tumor efficacy of taxane. We report that NOS blockade potentiated response of human MpBC cell lines and tumors to phosphoinositide 3-kinase (PI3K) inhibitor alpelisib and taxane. Mechanistically, NOS blockade leads to a decrease in the S-nitrosylation of c-Jun NH

Playing Proverbs With Madame De Genlis, Rebecca Cypess
Playing Proverbs With Madame De Genlis, Rebecca Cypess
ABO: Interactive Journal for Women in the Arts, 1640–1830
The theatrical genre known as the proverbe dramatique, which flourished as a pastime of French high society during the late eighteenth century, has often been understood through the written exemplars left by the author and artist Louis Carrogis, known as Carmontelle. Yet Carmontelle’s literary contributions to the genre have obscured the vast range of activities known as jouer des proverbes (playing proverbs)—activities associated especially with women—which included conversational games, pantomime, poetry, dance, and music making. Attending to the many descriptions of jouer des proverbes left by Stéphanie Félicité Ducrest de Saint-Aubin, the Comtesse de Genlis, reveals that the literary …
Simulating An Eighteenth-Century Enlightenment Salon: Embodied Experience And Scholarly Investigation, Jennifer M. Jones
Simulating An Eighteenth-Century Enlightenment Salon: Embodied Experience And Scholarly Investigation, Jennifer M. Jones
ABO: Interactive Journal for Women in the Arts, 1640–1830
This paper reflects on my experience simulating an 18th-century French salon for an academic conference and in an undergraduate classroom. I argue that simulating a salon is heuristically as well as pedagogically useful and allows historians to test hypotheses about the nature of the salon and the role of the salonnière proposed by scholars such as Dena Goodman and Antoine Lilti. The essay also engages with some of the important insights gained from feminist and performance theory regarding historical reenactment. Thus I caution against naive attempts to reenact the past and instead suggest practices that foster open-ended conversations about the …

Leading Towards The Queerest Insurrection: Queer Anarchism And Leadership Studies, Josie Holland
Leading Towards The Queerest Insurrection: Queer Anarchism And Leadership Studies, Josie Holland
Interdisciplinary Journal of Leadership Studies
Leadership shapes our world, our narratives, and what is possible to imagine. Unfortunately, leadership studies has some trouble imagining queer leadership, or rather, queer theory and leadership studies. In order to integrate the more abstract aspects of queer theory with the largely evidence-based field of leadership studies, I draw on the texts, history, practices, and theory of queer anarchism. This article aims to highlight a gap in leadership studies as it currently stands, and through accounting for the absence of queer anarchism in leadership studies, expand what leadership looks like. To this end, I suggest the framing of ‘leadership acts’ …

The p53 tumor suppressor is commonly mutated in cancer; however, there are no effective treatments targeting p53 mutants. A DNA vaccine gWIZ-S237G targeting the p53 S237G mutant, which is highly expressed in A20 murine tumor cells, was developed and administered intramuscularly via electroporation, either alone or in combination with PD1 blockade. The anti-p53-S237G immunization elicited a robust protective response against subcutaneous A20 tumors and facilitated the infiltration of immune cells including CD8+ T cells, NK cells, and DCs. The vaccine enhanced the induction and maturation of CD11c+, CD103+CD11c+, and CD8+CD11c+ cells, which in turn promoted tumor-specific antibody production, as well …
Experimental Insights Into Friction Losses Of Post-Tensioned Precast Full-Scale Girders, Mostafa Serry
Experimental Insights Into Friction Losses Of Post-Tensioned Precast Full-Scale Girders, Mostafa Serry
Theses and Dissertations
The use of post-tensioning in construction has revolutionized the construction industry and made way for several construction and structural applications that were unattainable before. One of the most important topics that are synonymous with the use of post-tensioning is the matter of accurately calculating the short-term and long-term losses that arise in pre-stress. One of the prominent types of losses is the friction losses that occur during the jacking of the concrete elements due to its impact on structural integrity and longevity.
The thesis examines this critical aspect of friction losses in post-tensioned concrete structures. The study focuses on full-scale, …

Using Gis To Visualize Daily Routines At The Neighborhood And Household Scales: A Feminist Approach Using A Nineteenth-Century Diary, Sterling D. Quinn
Journal of Feminist Scholarship
Feminist scholars in the discipline of geography have noted the ways that routine activities at the household and neighborhood scales contribute to power relations and identity formation. Geographic information systems (GIS), with their ability to create multiple visual representations of people’s experiences in space at any scale, hold great potential for revealing these local processes and patterns that are often lost or invisible in broader historical narratives, especially when they pertain to women and children. This article contributes an example by using GIS to encode and map everyday events in a diary kept by Elisabeth Koren, a nineteenth-century Norwegian immigrant …

A Quantitative Approach To Evaluating Multi-Event Resilience In Oil Pipeline Incidents, Labiba N. Asha, Nita Yodo, Ying Huang
Industrial Engineering Faculty Publications and Presentations
This study introduces a quantitative approach to evaluating the resilience of oil pipeline systems against various natural and physical disruptions. Resilience is increasingly essential in critical infrastructure to ensure continuous operations and minimize disruption impacts. However, existing quantitative methods often need specific time-dependent data, making measuring resilience in pipeline infrastructure challenging. To address this gap, this paper proposed a comprehensive framework by integrating the existing incident database with key features of assessing failure probabilities based on historical events and developing multi-event resilience indicators based on system performance under various disruptions. The methodology employs event tree analysis to quantify the probabilities …

Agfi-Gan: An Attention-Guided And Feature-Integrated Watermarking Model Based On Generative Adversarial Network Framework For Secure And Auditable Medical Imaging Application, Xinyun Liu, Ronghua Xu, Chen Zhao
Michigan Tech Publications
With the rapid digitization of healthcare, the secure transmission of medical images has become a critical concern, especially given the increasing prevalence of cyber threats and data privacy breaches. Medical images are frequently transmitted via the Internet and cloud platforms, making them susceptible to unauthorized access, tampering, and theft. While traditional cryptographic techniques play a vital role, they are often insufficient to fully ensure the integrity and confidentiality of these sensitive images. In this paper, we present AGFI-GAN, a robust and secure framework for medical image watermarking that leverages attention-guided and Feature-Integrated mechanisms within a Generative Adversarial Network (GAN). Specifically, …
Spectral Differencing Of Glories Reflects Cloud Droplet Size Distribution, Ilan Koren, Alex Kostinski, Uri Wollner
Spectral Differencing Of Glories Reflects Cloud Droplet Size Distribution, Ilan Koren, Alex Kostinski, Uri Wollner
Michigan Tech Publications
The glory, a striking optical phenomenon seen from space in unpolarized satellite images can be mapped onto the cloud's droplet sizes with a characteristic scale of 10 (Formula presented.). Such a mapping allows us to infer the mean and variance of the cloud droplets' radius, an important property that has remained elusive and inaccessible to passive unpolarized satellite sensing. Here, we propose a simple and robust polarization-like differential approach to map the glory's spectral properties to the desired moments of the droplet size distribution. By taking the differences between two spectrally close channels, we reduce multiple scattering contributions and amplify …

Technical science and innovation
In this article, the processes of metal complex synthesis are studied in detail. Zinc OEDF+NTF complexation reactions were carried out in the presence of polyhydric alcohols, ethylene glycol, glycerol, and citric acid. For the first time, the synergistic efficiency of a mixture of zinc OEDF+NTF complexes with methyldiethanolamine, used as an inhibitor of mineral salt accumulation, was studied. It was found that when selecting the components in equivalent amounts, the inhibition efficiency of the composition is at least 90%. The high efficiency of inhibiting mineral salt accumulation in the composition is due to the presence of methyldiethanolamine, alkylimidazoline, and their …

Technical science and innovation
The article presents the results of theoretical and experimental studies on drying of mulberry silkworm cocoons. Based on the analysis of drying efficiency and silk quality, the use of infrared radiation (IR) at a temperature of 70 °C was found to be optimal. The experimental data were tested on six mathematical models, among which the Midilli model most accurately described the drying process. The effective moisture diffusion coefficient was found to vary in the range of 1.847×10-⁹-4.339×10-⁹ m²/s, and the drying rate was found to be 0.32-0.79 kg of water/hour. IR radiation promotes accelerated evaporation of …
