Organ-on-a-chips (OoCs) or microphysiological platforms are biomimetic systems engineered to mimic organ structures onto microfluidic devices for biomedical research. These microdevices can mimic biological environments that enable cell-cell interactions at a small scale by mimicking 3D in vivo microenvironments outside the body. Thus far, numerous single and multiple OoCs that recapitulate organs have been developed, and they have emerged as forerunners for drug efficacy and cytotoxicity testing. This review explores OoC platforms to portray their versatility in investigating drug safety, efficacy, and toxicity. We also reflect upon the potential of OoCs to effectively demonstrate disease models for probable novel therapeutics, …

Background: Melanoma arises from the uncontrolled multiplication of melanocytes, posing an escalating global health concern. Despite early detection and surgical removal being crucial, metastatic melanoma poses treatment challenges, with limited options like chemotherapy and immunotherapy. All-trans retinoic acid (ATRA), a natural metabolite of vitamin A, has shown promise in melanoma treatment by inducing differentiation, apoptosis, growth arrest, and immune modulation. However, ATRA treatment alone can lead to resistance and relapse. Sphingomyelin (SM) also plays a role in inhibiting melanoma progression by apoptotic cell death. Objective: This study investigated combinational anticancer effects of ATRA and SM on in vitro B16F10 melanoma cells.Method: …

MEIS1, a member of the TALE-type homeobox gene family, has emerged as a pivotal regulator of cardiomyocyte cell cycle arrest and represents a promising therapeutic target. Our study reveals that inhibition of MEIS1 using two novel small molecules, MEISi-1 and MEISi-2, significantly enhances neonatal cardiomyocyte proliferation and cytokinesis. Specifically, MEISi-1 and MEISi-2 increased the proportion of proliferating cardiomyocytes (Ph3+TnnT cells) upto 4.5 fold and the percentage of cytokinetic cardiomyocytes (AuroraB+TnnT cells) by 2 fold, compared to untreated controls. MEIS1 inhibition resulted in a notable downregulation of MEIS1 target genes and cyclin-dependent kinase inhibitors, demonstrating its effect on key regulatory pathways. …

Citation is a distinguishing feature in research writing that every researcher must include to ensure credible ethical research. Citing sources is necessary as it provides credit to the original author, refers to previous findings, sets credibility, and enables sustainability of the topic. However, studies least consider culture as an element that influences citation beliefs and practices. Most literature holds a lack of language proficiency as the culprit for poor citation skills. Drawing from Hofstede's Cultural Dimension theory (2011) and Lewis’ (2006) Cultural Behaviour in Relation to Writing, this study explores the influence of culture on citation practices with the hope …

Abstract: To solve the problem of unstable performance and inefficient training process of low-quality data conditions at the initial stage of online deployment of air conditioner scheduling, we propose a migration-imitation learning-based air conditioning scheduling strategy simulation method. Reinforcement learning methods are used to generate building operation strategies. A standard building simulation model serves as the source domain, upon which migration learning is applied. An imitation learning loss function is incorporated into the intelligent loss function to enhance algorithm performance. The results indicate that, compared with the non-use of migration learning, the proposed method can improve the operational efficiency by …

Deep neural networks are extensively applied to real-world tasks. In many cases, the data feeding these tasks are human generated content, which emphasizes the criticality of privacy and data protection. The diverse modalities of this user data provide fertile ground for 3rd parties to monetize a user’s data. This work considers two such modalities: user speech when interacting with smart speaker voice assistants (VAs) and images shared with online service providers. In these cases, the user would like to support some form of machine learning (ML) inference without allowing others. A user interacting with a smart speaker would like the …

Cognitive Load Classification From Functional Near-Infrared Spectroscopy Data, Jiyang Wang
Dissertations - ALL
Predicting cognitive workload using physiological sensors, such as functional near-infrared spectroscopy (fNIRS), has gained significant attention in recent years. However, many existing methods are limited by small datasets and narrow brain channel coverage, restricting their generalizability across participants, tasks, and sessions. In this thesis, we introduce two innovative approaches aimed at overcoming these limitations: a CNN-BiGRU model with self-supervised label augmentation (SLA) and a block-wise domain adaptation method (BWise-DA). Our CNN-BiGRU-SLA model, grounded in cognitive load theory, leverages attention mechanisms and multi-label classification to predict working memory load (WML) and visual processing load (VPL) across multiple participants and sessions. Using …

Cells are constantly subjected to both external forces encountered from the extracellular environment and internal stresses generated by the cell necessary to migrate and undergo healthy cellular function. Central to the ability of cells to both generate and mediate forces is the cell cytoskeleton, which forms the muscles and bones for cells. There are three main components of the cell cytoskeleton: microtubules, actin, and intermediate filaments. The role of actin and microtubules in cell function, particularly force generation and mediation have been well studied; however, the role of intermediate filaments is less understood. Intermediate filaments represent a broad and diverse …
