Antarctic Macroalgal-Associated Amphipod Assemblages Exhibit Long-Term Resistance To Ocean Acidification, Hannah E. Oswalt, Julie Schram, Margaret Amsler, Charles D. Amsler, James B. Mcclintock

Faculty, Staff, and Students

The pH of the world’s oceans has decreased since the Industrial Revolution due to the oceanic uptake of increased atmospheric CO2 in a process called ocean acidification. Low pH has been linked to negative impacts on the calcification, growth, and survival of calcifying invertebrates. Along the Western Antarctic Peninsula, dominant brown macroalgae often shelter large numbers of diverse invertebrate mesograzers, many of which are calcified. Mesograzer assemblages in this region are often composed of large numbers of amphipods which have key roles in Antarctic macroalgal communities. Understanding the impacts of acidification on amphipods is vital for understanding how these communities …

Verkhivker

Mathematics, Physics, and Computer Science Faculty Articles and Research

KRAS, a historically "undruggable" oncogenic driver, has eluded targeted therapies due to its lack of accessible binding pockets in its active state. This study investigates the conformational dynamics, binding mechanisms, and allosteric communication networks of KRAS in complexes with monobodies (12D1, 12D5) and affimer proteins (K6, K3, K69) to characterize the binding and allosteric mechanisms and hotspots of KRAS binding. Through molecular dynamics simulations, mutational scanning, binding free energy analysis and network-based analyses, we identified conserved allosteric hotspots that serve as critical nodes for long-range communication in KRAS. Key residues in β-strand 4 (F78, L80, F82), α-helix 3 (I93, H95, …

The Impact Of Nature Reserves On The Ecological Network Of Urban Agglomerations—A Case Study Of The Urban Agglomeration In The Middle Reaches Of The Yangtze River, Weidi Li, Xiaoxu Liang, Anqiang Jia, John Martin

Professional Services

The accelerated development of urban agglomerations in China has resulted in the significant regional expansion of infrastructure and urban spaces, which has led to the fragmentation of habitats and the degradation of ecosystem function. Ecological networks have been shown to reconnect isolated habitat patches within urban agglomerations by identifying ecological sources and constructing corridors, which could enhance regional ecological security. Nature reserves, as critical areas for the protection of key species and ecosystems, play a vital role in this process. Investigating the influence of nature reserves on the ecological networks of urban agglomerations helps to integrate regional ecological resources, optimize …

Can Flywheel Training Serve As A Viable Intervention For Dynamic Strength Index Based Programs?, Jeffrey Ruiz

Doctorate in Kinesiology

The purpose of this case series was to examine the effects that flywheel training had on a person’s dynamic strength index in comparison to concurrent training (DSI). It has been shown that with strength training alone there can be an overall decrease in the DSI, due to an increase the IMTP peak force and no significant change in the CMJ performance (Comfort et al., 2018). Flywheel training’s effect on the DSI specifically have not been previously examined. It was hypothesized that a regimented flywheel training intervention will demonstrate an

improvement in the peak force for the countermovement jumps as well …

In drug-resistant focal epilepsy, planning surgical resection can involve presurgical intracranial EEG (iEEG) recordings to detect seizures and other iEEG patterns to improve postsurgical seizure outcome. We hypothesized that resection of tissue generating interictal high-frequency oscillations (HFOs, 80-500 Hz) in the iEEG predicts surgical outcome. In eight international epilepsy centres, iEEG was recorded during the presurgical evaluation of patients. The patients were of all ages, had epilepsy of all types, and underwent surgical resection of a single focus aiming at seizure freedom. In a prospective analysis, we applied a fully automated definition of HFO that was independent of the dataset. …

Experimental Measurements Of Compounds In Lithium-Air Battery Discharge Products, Helen Ma

Mechanical Engineering and Materials Science Independent Study

Lithium-air batteries have become increasingly popular due to their high theoretical energy density of 11,000 Wh/kg [1]. However, there are several challenges associated with lithium-air batteries. This project aims to gain a better understanding of the solid product produced from discharge of lithium-oxygen batteries by observing the lithium peroxide dependence on time spent discharging, time spent soaking for titration analyses, and cathode orientation. These experiments were performed using titration and UV-visible spectrophotometry. The lithium peroxide content was analyzed in cathodes with four different discharge times at the same current density. It was determined that there is a linearly increasing relationship …

Efficient Eeg Epilepsy Classification And Feature Selections Based On Hellinger Distance, Muhammed Sadiq May 2025

Efficient Eeg Epilepsy Classification And Feature Selections Based On Hellinger Distance, Muhammed Sadiq

Theses and Dissertations

Accurate and efficient detection of epileptic seizures from EEG signals remains a critical challenge due to high-dimensional data, class imbalance, and the limitations of standard classifiers. This thesis introduces two novel models to address these challenges. The first model presents a new classifier based on the Hellinger Distance, specifically designed to enhance discriminative capability and robustness against imbalanced datasets. By integrating the Hellinger Distance Classifier with Particle Swarm Optimization (PSO) for feature selection, this model significantly improves classification performance while reducing computational complexity. Experimental evaluations on the Bonn dataset demonstrate an accuracy of 96.25%, an F1-score of 97.74%, a recall …

Meeting Mandates In A New Labour Federalism: Opportunities And Challenges, Jake Barnes, Hana Shepherd, Janice Fine

Comparative Labor Law & Policy Journal

Worker advocates seeking to affect labour policy change in the United States have shifted their attention and energy to states and localities in a move that has been called the “new labour federalism.” new labour federalism has broadened the scope of public worker protections, while also making the enforcement of those protections even more necessary. In this article, we draw on interviews with agencies and advocates, analysis of agency enforcement data, violation estimates, and publicly available information to understand better how federalism has created both opportunities and challenges for workers, employers, and agencies tasked with enforcing employment standards. We contextualise …

Avoiding Recidivism Of Recently Released Offenders In North Carolina, Josue Genaro Galvez May 2025

Avoiding Recidivism Of Recently Released Offenders In North Carolina, Josue Genaro Galvez

Walden Dissertations and Doctoral Studies

There is a problem with recidivism in the North Carolina prison system and the United States. This study fills the gap in the literature by focusing on what life experiences contribute to behaviors in recently released offenders not to reoffend in North Carolina. Edmund Husserl's (1913) Transcendental Phenomenology used several angles of perception and a thematic analysis of the participant’s lived experiences. This study employed a purposive sampling method by targeting 17 participants who may have represented characteristics of the intended population. Researchers do not know what kept these released offenders from avoiding prison. This phenomenological design focused on the …

The conjugation of small ubiquitin-like modifiers (SUMO) to target proteins, known as SUMOylation, plays a crucial role in regulating protein homeostasis, activity, interaction with other proteins, and subcellular localization. Loss of SUMOylation in nongrowing oocytes by conditional deletion of the E2 SUMO conjugating enzyme, Ube2i, at the primordial follicle stage leads to female sterility due to complex changes in oocyte development, including altered folliculogenesis, defective meiotic progression, and premature loss of the ovarian reserve. In this study, proteomics was used to compare control and Ube2i conditional knockout ovaries during the first wave of folliculogenesis to identify key differences that may …

Wind Shear And The Role Of Eddy Vapor Transport In Driving Water Convection On Jupiter, Ramanakumar Sankar, Michael H. Wong, Csaba Palotai, Shawn Brueshaber May 2025

Wind Shear And The Role Of Eddy Vapor Transport In Driving Water Convection On Jupiter, Ramanakumar Sankar, Michael H. Wong, Csaba Palotai, Shawn Brueshaber

Michigan Tech Publications

Recent observations of convection in the Jovian atmosphere have demonstrated that convection is strongly concentrated at specific locations on the planet. For instance, observations of lightning show that the cyclonic features (e.g., belts and folded filamentary regions) show increased convective activity compared to anticyclonic regions. Meanwhile, the distribution of ammonia and water vapor shows a large enrichment near the equator, which is also suggestive of strong upwelling and convective activity. Marrying these different observations is challenging owing to a lack of data concerning the characteristics of the deep Jovian atmosphere and a resulting inability to observe the true deep source …

Reconfiguration-Driven Assembly Of Inorganic Nanomembranes, Divya Jyoti Prakash May 2025

Reconfiguration-Driven Assembly Of Inorganic Nanomembranes, Divya Jyoti Prakash

Chemical and Biological Engineering ETDs

This thesis focuses on the guided self-assembly of metastable nanomembranes (NMs) that are either amorphous or polycrystalline. Guided self-assembly of NMs is a robust and scalable method to obtain a variety of three-dimensional structures such as helices, rolled-up tubes, and networks of interconnected channels. These 3D structures have important applications as on-chip actuators, sensors, inductors, transformers, waveguides, and antennas. Furthermore, a large amount of strain and strain gradient can be imparted in NMs by bending them to a nanoscale and microscale radius of curvature, making guided self-assembly on NMs a viable route to extreme strain engineering of amorphous and polycrystalline …

Two-Step Estimation Procedure For Parametric Copula-Based Regression Models For Semi-Competing Risks Data, Qingmin Zhang, Bowen Duan, Małgorzata Wojtyś, Yinghui Wei

School of Engineering, Computing and Mathematics

Non-terminal and terminal events in semi-competing risks data are typically associated and may be influenced by covariates. We employed regression modeling for semi-competing risks data under a copula-based framework to evaluate the effects of covariates on the two events and the association between them. Due to the complexity of the copula structure, we propose a new method that integrates a novel two-step algorithm with the Bound Optimization by Quadratic Approximation (BOBYQA) method. This approach effectively mitigates the influence of initial values and demonstrates greater robustness. The simulations validate the performance of the proposed method. We further applied our proposed method …

Intraspecific Sensory Diversity And The Decapod Claw: Patterns Of Sensillation Are Heterochelic And Sexually Dimorphic In Pagurus Bernhardus, Ari Drummond, Summer Nash, Tianna Holloway, Alexander Wilson, Lucy Turner, Mark Briffa, David T Bilton

School of Biological and Marine Sciences

Information detection affects physiological performance and behaviour and is vital to survival and fitness. Despite the recognised importance of sensory adaptations in information acquisition and manipulation, many forms of sensory variation—from within individuals to between species—remain underexplored. To better understand the role of information in evolution, it is important to examine sensory variation as part of a cohesive framework of sensory diversity. Using the decapod claw, a structure well-recognised for its morphological variation, we investigated sensory diversity at the intraspecific level by assessing heterochely and sexual dimorphism in the chelar morphologies of Pagurus bernhardus hermit crabs. We employed a novel …
