An Investigation Of Non-Persistence Of Second And Third Year Engineering Students At A Midsize Research University In The South, Kimberly Elizabeth Ball

Theses and Dissertations

Approximately 25% of engineering students drop out during their 1st year of school, with nearly that many leaving during their second or third years. A meta-analysis of engineering non-persistence literature led to the development of an Engineering Non-persistence Model, which incorporates both quantitative and qualitative factors. While previous research primarily focused on factors of non-persistence of engineering students as a whole, this study aims to fill the gap in existing literature by examining factors within the model that contribute to non-persistence among 2nd- and 3rd-year engineering students. The goal is to provide tailored support to second and third year students …

The prognosis of remaining useful life (RUL) for the aero-engine plays an indispensable role in enhancing the safety of aircraft and diminishing maintenance expenses. Several deep learning (DL) methods have been recently employed to handle this prediction problem due to their adaptable architectures and superior performance in handling the nonlinear characteristics of prediction problems. However, those models still need further improvement to better predict the status of aircraft engines. Therefore, this paper presents a new DL model, dubbed attention residual block-adaptive long short-term memory (ARB-ALSTM), based on integrating the attention mechanism with the long short-term memory network (LSTM) model and …

Roles Of Class Iii Phosphatidylinositol 3-Kinase, Vps34, In Phagocytosis, Autophagy, And Endocytosis In Retinal Pigmented Epithelium, Feng He, Ralph M Nichols, Melina A Agosto, Theodore G Wensel May 2025

Roles Of Class Iii Phosphatidylinositol 3-Kinase, Vps34, In Phagocytosis, Autophagy, And Endocytosis In Retinal Pigmented Epithelium, Feng He, Ralph M Nichols, Melina A Agosto, Theodore G Wensel

Faculty, Staff and Students Publications

Phosphatidylinositol-3-phosphate (PI(3)P) is important for multiple functions of retinal pigmented epithelial (RPE) cells, but its functions in RPE have not been studied. In RPE from mouse eyes and in cultured human RPE cells, PI(3)P-enriched membranes include endosomes, the trans-Golgi network, phagosomes, and autophagophores. Mouse RPE cells lacking activity of the PI-3 kinase, Vps34, lack detectable PI(3)P and die prematurely. Phagosomes containing rod discs accumulate, as do membrane aggregates positive for autophagosome markers. These autophagy-related membranes recruit LC3/Atg8 without Vps34, but phagosomes do not. Vps34 loss leads to accumulation of lysosomes which do not fuse with phagosomes or membranes with …

Weather Impacts On Migration And Food Insecurity In Bangladesh, Brendon M. Wong, Andrew Hobbs May 2025

Weather Impacts On Migration And Food Insecurity In Bangladesh, Brendon M. Wong, Andrew Hobbs

Master's Theses

This paper analyzes the impact of weather shocks on household migration and food insecurity, and the mechanisms in which they do so. As climate change continues to impact weather patterns, subsistence farmers remain extremely vulnerable and can experience decreases in welfare. Using the Bangladesh Integrated Household Survey, we construct a panel dataset to measure the effects of temperature and rainfall on remittance amounts, food consumption scores, and child wasting z-scores. We observe that weather has strong impacts on these outcomes but are dependent on the rice variety and growing season. We do not find strong evidence that the mechanism in …

Climate Shocks, Crop Yields, And School Enrollment In Rural Ethiopia, Mallika Matharu May 2025

Climate Shocks, Crop Yields, And School Enrollment In Rural Ethiopia, Mallika Matharu

Master's Theses

This study investigates how climate-induced shocks to agricultural productivity affect school enrollment in rural Ethiopia. Using five waves of panel data from the Ethiopia Living Standards Measurement Study (LSMS) and satellite-derived weather indicators, I estimate the causal effects of crop yields, specifically Teff, Sorghum, and Maize, on children’s school attendance. To address the endogeneity of agricultural output, I instrument crop yields with agro-climatic measures such as growing degree days (GDD), harmful degree days (HDD), and soil moisture during the Meher growing season. The main empirical strategy uses a two-stage instrumental variable approach with region and wave fixed effects. Results suggest …

Adaptive Multi-Sensor Fusion For Robust Autonomous Perception In Unstructured Environments, Samantha S. Carley

Theses and Dissertations

Autonomous vehicles commonly employ multiple sensors to perceive their surroundings. Coupling these sensors would ideally improve perception compared to using a single sensor. An autonomous system can be equipped with object localization and classification, often performed using a visual camera to understand a scene intelligently. Object detection and classification can also be applied to LiDAR and infrared (IR) sensors to further enhance scene awareness of the autonomous system. Herein, sensor-level, decision-level, and feature-level fusion are explored to assess their impact on perception and mitigate sensor disagreements. Specifically, the fusing of RGB, LiDAR, and IR sensor data to improve object classification …
