Using Industry-Level Characteristics To Assess The Degree To Which Interventions Engage An Employee Population, Haley C. Trust, Brett Amazon, Anthony Puline, Evan Sassenberger, Kristin Horan

The Kennesaw Journal of Undergraduate Research

Participation is an essential component in workplace health and safety programs or interventions. While those who conduct interventions often report participation rates among the overall organization, it could be useful to compare participants to industry statistics, given that health and safety risks can diverge widely among industries. Research students from Kennesaw State University analyzed a sample of published papers that focus on occupational health psychology interventions. This narrative review analyzed existing studies to look for similarities or dissimilarities between a sample of intervention participants and employees of their industry as a whole. The students considered demographic, socioeconomic, job-related, and health-related …

Integrating Universal Generative Ai Platforms In Educational Labs To Foster Critical Thinking And Digital Literacy, Vasiliy S. Znamenskiy, Joel Hernandez, Rafael Niyazov

Publications and Research

This study investigates the educational potential of generative artificial intelligence (GenAI) platforms based on large language models (LLMs), such as ChatGPT, Claude, and Gemini, as tools for studentcentred learning. Recognizing the current limitations of GenAI, particularly its propensity for generating inaccurate or misleading information—the paper proposes a novel instructional strategy: an interdisciplinary laboratory designed to foster critical evaluation of GenAI-generated outputs. In this pedagogical model, students engage with GenAI systems by posing questions or solving problems drawn from topics they have already studied and understand. Equipped with correct answers, students are positioned to assess the accuracy and relevance of AI-generated …

Quantifying Harmful Trunk Postures: Inertial Sensor Analysis Of Trunk Angle To Support Low Back Pain Prevention, Elsa E. Bates Jun 2025

Quantifying Harmful Trunk Postures: Inertial Sensor Analysis Of Trunk Angle To Support Low Back Pain Prevention, Elsa E. Bates

Master's Theses

Low back pain is a highly prevalent condition worldwide, impacting up to 80% of individuals at least once in their lifetime. A critical gap in current prevention strategies is the lack of tools to accurately measure trunk posture and movement in real-world environments. Accurate identification of biomechanical risk requires information about movement intensity, duration, and frequency, yet traditional assessment methods rely on self-reporting or visual observation, which are time-consuming and prone to error. To address this gap, a wearable monitoring method, consisting of two Inertial Measurement Units, was designed to quantify risk exposure to the spine by measuring angular position …

Entrepreneurial Spirit In Women Of Color: Case Studies On Navigating Cultural And Structural Barriers In Conventional Entrepreneurial Systems, Liz Thuy-Duong Nguyen Pham

Social Justice in Educational Leadership EdD Dissertations

This qualitative narrative multiple case study explores how Women of Color Entrepreneurs (WoCEs) navigate intersecting structural, cultural, and emotional barriers that shape their entrepreneurial experiences. Grounded in feminist economics, intersectionality, and grit theory, the study centers the lived narratives of five WoCEs across California to examine how identity, cultural values, and caregiving responsibilities influence business motivations, strategies, and definitions of success.

Rather than framing their journeys through a deficit lens, this research adopts an assetbased approach to highlight the resilience, creativity, and community-rooted models that WoCEs cultivate. Findings reveal how participants strategically respond to systemic exclusion— including patriarchal norms that …

Learning Spatio-Temporal Dynamics For Trajectory Recovery Via Time-Aware Transformer, Tian Sun, Yuqi Chen, Baihua Zheng, Weiwei Sun

Research Collection School Of Computing and Information Systems

In real-world applications, GPS trajectories often suffer from low sampling rates, with large and irregular intervals between consecutive GPS points. This sparse characteristic presents challenges for their direct use in GPS-based systems. This paper addresses the task of map-constrained trajectory recovery, aiming to enhance trajectory sampling rates of GPS trajectories. Previous studies commonly adopt a sequence-to-sequence framework, where an encoder captures the trajectory patterns and a decoder reconstructs the target trajectory. Within this framework, effectively representing the road network and extracting relevant trajectory features are crucial for overall performance. Despite advancements in these models, they fail to fully leverage the …

Enhancing Vulnerability Detection Via Inter-Procedural Semantic Completion, Bozhi Wu, Chengjie Liu, Zhiming Li, Yushi Cao, Jun Sun, Shang-Wei Lin

Research Collection School Of Computing and Information Systems

Inspired by advances in deep learning, numerous learning-based approaches for vulnerability detection have emerged, primarily operating at the function level for scalability. However, this design choice has a critical limitation: many vulnerabilities span multiple functions, causing function-level approaches to lose the semantics of called functions and fail to capture true vulnerability patterns. To address this issue, we propose VulnSC, a novel framework designed to enhance learning-based approaches by complementing inter-procedural semantics. VulnSC retrieves the source code of called functions for datasets and leverages large language models (LLMs) with well-designed prompts to generate summaries for these functions. The datasets, enhanced with …

The Impact Of Ai Bots And Crawlers On Open Repositories: Results Of A Coar Survey, April 2025, Kathleen Shearer, Paul Walk

Copyright, Fair Use, Scholarly Communication, etc.

There are a growing number of AI bots crawling repositories. These automated bots, or crawlers, navigate the internet, gathering data and indexing information for search engines, AI and large language models, and other purposes. While some bots are rather innocuous, others are sufficiently aggressive that they are increasingly causing service disruptions in repositories (and other scholarly communications infrastructures). To learn more about the current state and gain a better understanding about the impact of bots and crawlers on repositories, COAR distributed a survey to members in April 2025. The survey received 66 responses from repositories around the world (22 from …

Transparency Without Teeth: An Empirical Understanding Of Data Broker Regulation, Elijah Greisz Jun 2025

Transparency Without Teeth: An Empirical Understanding Of Data Broker Regulation, Elijah Greisz

University of Chicago Law Review

It is no secret that data has taken over the modern economy, and it is unsurprising that governments have begun acting in response. Perceiving mismatched bargaining power between firms and consumers—and certain externalities resulting from the massive quantities of data being collected by firms about those consumers— many state legislatures have passed generally applicable data privacy statutes. These laws give consumers certain rights to control the data they distribute in everyday commerce. Such regulations follow an “interaction model,” whereby consumers can exercise their rights by interacting with data-possessing firms.

But there is a key player that complicates this scheme: the …

Injury Equity: The Rise Of Future Stakes Settlements, Margaret Schaack

University of Chicago Law Review

In a changing environment in which class action defendants are turning to aggressive strategies to contain the cost of lawsuits, including using bankruptcy proceedings to limit their liability, plaintiffs’ attorneys are fighting back by seeking new ways to recover damages from illiquid and functionally judgment-proof companies. The latest development is the “future stakes settlement,” unveiled in the agreement to end a privacy law class action lawsuit against the startup Clearview AI. Under this novel mechanism, a defendant grants a privately traded equity stake to the class in exchange for a release of all claims

Future stakes settlements, though similar to …

Rain, Rain, Go Away: Geoengineering And The Illusion Of Control, Hannibal Newsom Jun 2025

Rain, Rain, Go Away: Geoengineering And The Illusion Of Control, Hannibal Newsom

School of Architecture - All Scholarship

“Geoengineering” is increasingly seen as the best, perhaps even last, hope in the fight against global warming. Calls for such practices as Solar Radiation Management are becoming urgent as the effects of the climate crisis make themselves visible. This essay uses California’s Salton Sea, a geo-engineered palimpsest of once natural terrain turned toxic and inhospitable through human intervention, as a case study against the illusion of control. Through the critical lens of Magical Realism and the visual language of the architecture studio, this essay calls into question the desire to exert human control over natural systems, illustrating that the unintended …

Electrical and Computer Engineering Faculty Publications and Presentations

Emerging industrial applications involving robotic collaborative operations and mobile robots require a more reliable and precise wireless network for deterministic data transmission. To meet this demand, the 3rd Generation Partnership Project (3GPP) is promoting the integration of 5th Generation Mobile Communication Technology (5G) and Time-Sensitive Networking (TSN). Time synchronization is essential for deterministic data transmission. Based on the 3GPP’s vision of the 5G and TSN integrated networking with interoperability, we improve the time synchronization of TSN to conquer the multi-gNB competition, re-transmission, and mobility problems for the integrated 5G time synchronization. We implemented the improvement mechanisms and systematically validated the …

Distributed Energy Resources: A Systematic Literature Review, Midrar Adham, Sean Keene, Robert B. Bass Jun 2025

Distributed Energy Resources: A Systematic Literature Review, Midrar Adham, Sean Keene, Robert B. Bass

Electrical and Computer Engineering Faculty Publications and Presentations

The traditional power grid, characterized by its centralized nature and one-way power flow, has long been the backbone of electricity supply and distribution. Grid operators have historically found various ways to accurately predict demand, anticipate faults, and prepare appropri- ate responses. However, with the rapid integration of Distributed Energy Resources such as Photovoltaic, storage systems, grid-interactive generation, and flexible-load assets, energy consumption and production patterns have become less predictable, transforming the grid into a two-way power flow system. Managing the potential of these Distributed Energy Resources requires advanced management systems that provide monitoring, coordination, and aggregation capabilities to …

A Developmental Texture Framework For Food Texture Progression: Implications For Feeding Development, Oral Motor Skills, And Pediatric Feeding Disorder, Amy L. Delaney, Sarah Staskiewicz, Suzanne Evans Morris, Sarah Smith-Simpson, Praveen S. Goday Jun 2025

A Developmental Texture Framework For Food Texture Progression: Implications For Feeding Development, Oral Motor Skills, And Pediatric Feeding Disorder, Amy L. Delaney, Sarah Staskiewicz, Suzanne Evans Morris, Sarah Smith-Simpson, Praveen S. Goday

Speech Pathology and Audiology Faculty Research and Publications

The introduction of food textures in a child's first 2 years of life plays a vital role in growth, nutrition, and feeding development. However, the absence of a standardized texture framework for studying texture progression limits both pediatric feeding research and the ability to diagnose pediatric feeding disorder (PFD) based on age-appropriate expectations. To address this gap, authors Delaney and Goday proposed data sharing from the Nestlé Feeding Infant-Toddler Study (FITS) to explore texture progression and define age-appropriate texture expectations. In response, Nestlé assembled a multidisciplinary panel of feeding experts to create standardized textures but did not provide financial or …

Fixed Points In Linear Regression, David L. Farnsworth Jun 2025

Fixed Points In Linear Regression, David L. Farnsworth

Articles

There is a set of points in the plane whose elements correspond to the observations that are used to generate a simple least-squares regression line. Each value of the independent variable in the observations matches up with one of these points, which are called pivot or fixed points. The coordinates of the fixed points are derived, and the properties of the points are explored. All points in the plane that yield each of the fixed points are found. The role that fixed points play in regression diagnostics is investigated. A new mechanical device that uses linkages to model the role …

The Past, Present, And Future Of Proxy Voting Choice, Dorothy S. Lund

Faculty Scholarship

This article provides an early attempt at understanding what voluntary pass-through voting could mean for the marketplace. I first provide an overview of my argument in my 2018 Journal of Corporation Law article and the events that followed. I then survey passthrough voting initiatives that have taken hold at three asset managers — BlackRock, Vanguard, and State Street. I then conclude with some preliminary observations about how voting choice is likely to affect the proxy voting landscape and outline open questions.

Ac-Induced Corrosion Of Cathodically Protected Pipelines: Experimental Study And Probabilistic Modeling, Yuhan Su, Emadoddin Majdabadi Farahani, Qindan Huang, Qixin Zhou Jun 2025

Ac-Induced Corrosion Of Cathodically Protected Pipelines: Experimental Study And Probabilistic Modeling, Yuhan Su, Emadoddin Majdabadi Farahani, Qindan Huang, Qixin Zhou

Civil and Environmental Engineering Faculty Research and Publications

This study investigated the effects of alternating current (AC) interference on pipeline steel under cathodic protection (CP). In a simulated solution, real-time electrochemical measurements and corrosion rate analysis were conducted on two steel types (C1018 and X60) under various levels of AC interference with CP. Due to the complexity of AC-induced corrosion, relying on the shift in DC potential alone cannot accurately demonstrate the corrosion behavior in the presence of AC interference. In fact, such an approach may mislead the predictions of corrosion performance. It is observed that AC interference reduced the effectiveness of CP and increased the corrosion rate …
