Advancing Academic Advising With Knowledge Graphs: Integrating Machine Learning And Llms For Personalized Course Planning, Sara Alshamsi
Advancing Academic Advising With Knowledge Graphs: Integrating Machine Learning And Llms For Personalized Course Planning, Sara Alshamsi
Theses
Academic advising plays a critical role in helping students make informed decisions, improve academic performance, and successfully navigate their university journey. However, with increasing university enrollment, traditional advising methods often struggle to scale, leading to student frustration and overburdened advisors. Additionally, designing course offerings that match student demand is a complex and error-prone process involving multiple stakeholders. To address these challenges, this thesis proposes an automated, data-driven system for generating personalized academic plans for students. The primary aim of this thesis is to develop a system that reduces students’ dependency on advisors while simultaneously providing accurate estimates of course demand …
Numerical Methods For Approximating Line Integrals Over Implicitly Defined Curves, Raghd Alsaadawi
Numerical Methods For Approximating Line Integrals Over Implicitly Defined Curves, Raghd Alsaadawi
Theses
In this thesis, we develop and investigate a predictor-corrector method for the numerical tracing of implicitly defined curves. The study begins with the introduction of modified numerical integration techniques — specifically, the modified trapezoidal and modified midpoint rules — for evaluating the line integral of a vector field along an implicitly defined curve. Furthermore, we explore higher-order methods aimed at improving the accuracy of such integrals. Theoretical and numerical results, including asymptotic error expansions, are presented to support the analysis. In addition, several numerical experiments are carried out to illustrate the effectiveness and robustness of the proposed approaches.

The CBPE -E3 envisions becoming …
Multi-Point And Multi-Station Orbit Propagation For Non-Functional Drifting Geo Satellites, Hritik Mitra
Multi-Point And Multi-Station Orbit Propagation For Non-Functional Drifting Geo Satellites, Hritik Mitra
Theses
Currently, there are thousands of man-made space objects that are orbiting the Earth. These satellites serve a host of essential purposes (scientific research, technical applications, services) and they are all required to remain within their mission parameters. Most critical for them is to maintain the orbital parameters that are specified to achieve a particular mission’s objectives. If a satellite deviates beyond a certain limit, there is not only a risk of mission failure but there is a major hazard for possible collisions with other objects such as active satellites, space debris and even natural objects in some cases. There is …

Investigation And Prediction Of Excessive Water Production In Bottom Water-Drive Naturally Fractured Reservoirs Using Machine And Deep Learning, Sami Abderraouf Belkhir
Theses
Naturally Fractured Reservoirs (NFRs) are characterized by dual-porosity and dual-permeability systems, posing significant challenges in managing water production due to highly conductive fracture networks that facilitate rapid water migration from bottom aquifers, often bypassing oil stored in the matrix, thus resulting in early water breakthrough and water channeling phenomena. The main objective of this thesis is to develop and validate deep learning and machine learning models to predict water production, water breakthrough time (tbt), and ultimate water cut (WCult) in NFRs, thereby enabling more effective reservoir management strategies. This work also aims to evaluate the sensitivity of water behavior to …

Theses
Wavelets have been widely used in many areas of engineering and mathematics, including the development of multistep algorithms to solve initial value problems (IVPs) in the context of the Galerkin method using Daubechies' wavelets. The main scope of our work is to build a comprehensive framework for solving Systems of Differential equations using the compactly supported wavelets proposed by I. Daubechies. Wavelets are mathematical functions that decompose data into distinct frequency components, and each element is analyzed with a resolution that matches its scale. Compact support of Daubechies wavelets is key in allowing them to be computationally efficient for high-dimensional …

Meta-Learning Hyperparameters For Foundation Model Adaptation In Remote-Sensing Imagery, Zichen Tian, Yaoyao Liu, Qianru Sun
Research Collection School Of Computing and Information Systems
Training large foundation models of remote-sensing (RS) images is almost impossible due to the limited and long-tailed data problems. Fine-tuning natural image pre-trained models on RS images is a straightforward solution. To reduce computational costs and improve performance on tail classes, existing methods apply parameter-efficient fine-tuning (PEFT) techniques, such as LoRA and AdaptFormer. However, we observe that fixed hyperparameters -- such as intra-layer positions, layer depth, and scaling factors, can considerably hinder PEFT performance, as fine-tuning on RS images proves highly sensitive to these settings. To address this, we propose MetaPEFT, a method incorporating adaptive scalers that dynamically adjust module …

De-Duplicating Silent Compiler Bugs Via Deep Semantic Representation, Junjie Chen, Xingyu Fan, Chen Yang, Shuang Liu, Jun Sun
Research Collection School Of Computing and Information Systems
The compiler bug duplication problem (where many test failures are caused by the same compiler bug) can lead to huge waste of time and resource in diagnosing test failures produced by compiler testing. It is particularly challenging with regard to the silent compiler bugs that do not produce any error messages. To address this problem, multiple white-box techniques were proposed, but they are inapplicable in many practical scenarios. Black-box techniques are more practical, but the existing ones are less effective as they often rely on irrelevant syntactic information. To bridge this gap, we propose a novel black-box technique (BLADE), which …

Research Collection School Of Computing and Information Systems
Detecting fraudulent activities in financial and e-commerce transaction networks is crucial. One effective method for this is Densest Subgraph Discovery (DSD). However, deploying DSD methods in production systems faces substantial scalability challenges due to the predominantly sequential nature of existing methods, which impedes their ability to handle large-scale transaction networks and results in significant detection delays. To address these challenges, we introduce Dupin, a novel parallel processing framework designed for efficient DSD processing in billion-scale graphs. Dupin is powered by a processing engine that exploits the unique properties of the peeling process, with theoretical guarantees on detection quality and efficiency. …

Inquiry in science and mathematics education has a long and established history within the student-centered teaching movement because it can positively impact student learning, retention, and engagement. Yet few teachers have embraced these practices in the classroom. Potential reasons include misalignment of teachers’ attitudes about inquiry and a lack of understanding of what inquiry is and how to implement it in the classroom. This mixed-methods study compares these claims by examining preservice teachers’ attitudes and knowledge about inquiry-based teaching. Eighty-seven discussion posts were analyzed on preservice science and math teachers’ preferences for inquiry-based versus teacher-centered instruction at the beginning and …

Property Testing Ai: An Efficient Frontier, Paul Sopher Lintilhac
Dartmouth College Ph.D Dissertations
In this dissertation, we take a step towards addressing the major problem of a lack of standardized and rigorous approaches to testing and evaluation of AI systems. Taking inspiration from both the fields of Property Testing and Property Based Testing (for programs), we develop a novel taxonomy of partially overlapping classes of properties of AI systems, including simple properties, compound properties, higher order properties, data relation properties, and architecture-utility properties. We argue that this taxonomy categorizes a diverse set of AI traits -- including accuracy, fairness, robustness, monotonicity, point-wise and global privacy properties, sensitivity, and more -- according to the …

Monitoring children’s handwriting, such as avoiding writing assignments, displaying uneven letter formation, or showing slow writing speed, can help identify developmental and academic issues early. Poor handwriting affects up to 34% of children, leading to academic and self-esteem challenges. Handwriting assessments, typically conducted by teachers, are often delayed due to workload and could be subjective and inconsistent. This paper explores the potential of Optical Character Recognition (OCR) technology to augment and ease handwriting assessments. Based on an evaluation of 10 OCR algorithms using 33 handwriting samples assessed by two experts, the research indicates that Pen to Print and Google are …

Background & aims: Pancreatic ductal adenocarcinoma (PDAC) has a complex tumor microenvironment enriched with tumor-associated macrophages. Triggering receptor expressed on myeloid cells 2 (TREM2) is highly expressed by a subset of macrophages in PDAC. However, the functional role of TREM2 in PDAC progression remains elusive.
Methods: We generated a novel transgenic mouse model (KPPC;Trem2-/-) that enables the genetic depletion of TREM2 in the context of spontaneous PDAC development. Single-cell RNA-sequencing analysis was used to identify changes in the tumor immune microenvironment on TREM2 depletion. We evaluated the impacts of TREM2 depletion on the tumor immune microenvironment to elucidate the functions …

Glioblastoma (GBM) is the most common and deadly primary brain malignancy and is clinically refractory to immunotherapy. Active NLRP3 inflammasome signaling and IL-1β secretion have been observed in GBM, and NLRP3-driven myeloid-derived suppressor cell (MDSC) recruitment can mediate cancer immune evasion. Agonists of the cytosolic double-stranded DNA-sensing stimulator of IFN gene (STING) pathway can mediate proinflammatory conversion of cancer MDSCs; however, secretion of the NLRP3 products IL-1β and IL-18 has also been observed in certain myeloid populations following STING activation. In this study, we aimed to determine both the potential mechanistic synergy between STING and NLRP3 agonists, and the effects …

Bispecific antibodies (bsAbs) have emerged as a novel class of therapeutics, offering a dual-targeting strategy to enhance the therapeutic efficacy of monoclonal antibodies, which is often limited by tumor heterogeneity and the occurrence of resistance mechanisms. By simultaneously engaging two distinct antigens or pathways, bsAbs disrupt multiple signaling cascades simultaneously, preventing escape mechanisms and offering a more durable response. Furthermore, they can optimize immune activation, improving immune cell recruitment strategies. In particular, T-cell engager bsAbs facilitate immune cell-mediated tumor destruction by linking T cells to tumor antigens. Instead, dual immune checkpoint inhibitors (CPIs) enhance immune activation by blocking inhibitory signals. …

Inhibition of the epidermal growth factor receptor (EGFR) shows clinical benefit in metastatic colorectal cancer (CRC) patients, but KRAS-mutations are known to confer resistance. However, recent reports highlight EGFR as a crucial target to be co-inhibited with RAS inhibitors for effective treatment of KRAS mutant CRC. Here, we investigated the tumor cell-intrinsic contribution of EGFR in KRASG12D tumors by establishing murine CRC organoids with key CRC mutations (KRAS, APC, TP53) and inducible EGFR deletion. Metabolomic, transcriptomic, and scRNA-analyses revealed that EGFR deletion in KRAS-mutant organoids reduced their phenotypic heterogeneity and activated a distinct cancer-stem-cell/WNT signature associated with reduced cell size …

Despite the recent successes of immune checkpoint inhibitors (ICIs) in treating advanced melanoma, durable clinical responses still remain limited. To boost immune responses, agents that target immune regulators, such as the Stimulator of Interferon Genes (STING) agonist cyclic GMP-AMP (cGAMP), are being investigated. However, their clinical translation is impeded by poor serum stability, rapid tissue clearance, and T-cell death due to off-target activation. Recently, a novel strategy termed Microbubble-assisted UltraSound-guided Immunotherapy of Cancer (MUSIC) has been reported to selectively deliver cGAMP directly into the cytosol of antigen-presenting cells with spatiotemporal control. The resulting activation of STING and downstream proinflammatory pathways …
