A Mobile Ai Conversational Platform For Supporting Autism Assessment In Children, Ruoyu Wang
A Mobile Ai Conversational Platform For Supporting Autism Assessment In Children, Ruoyu Wang
OneUSF Summer Undergraduate Research Symposium
Early identification of autism spectrum disorder (ASD) remains challenging because many clinically relevant social, emotional, and communication behaviors are difficult to capture during brief clinical encounters. Young children may have limited attention spans, communicate differently with unfamiliar adults, struggle to express thoughts and emotions, or behave differently in clinical settings than in everyday environments. Consequently, clinicians often rely on brief observations and caregiver reports, which may not fully represent children’s typical communication behaviors. This study introduces an AI-powered conversational application for smartphones that supports longitudinal collection of naturalistic communication data from children. The application engages children in age-appropriate, play-based conversations …
Investigation Of Localized Corrosion Effects On Structural Dynamic Properties, Thais Isabelle Parron Ruiz
Investigation Of Localized Corrosion Effects On Structural Dynamic Properties, Thais Isabelle Parron Ruiz
OneUSF Summer Undergraduate Research Symposium
Corrosion is one of the main causes of structural deterioration. It reduces the structural integrity of the metal at the damaged location, making the entire structure less safe and more susceptible to failure. Therefore, structural health monitoring (SHM) is important for detecting damage before unsafe conditions develop and potentially lead to structural failure. The purpose of this study is to investigate the use of vibration-based dynamic analysis to identify localized corrosion. Every structure has intrinsic frequencies and shapes in which it tends to vibrate, known as natural frequencies and mode shapes. These parameters depend on the mass and stiffness of …
Evaluation Of Aluminum Electrocoagulation Performance Indicators For Decentralized Drinking Water Treatment, Huy Nguyen, Monica Castro Carias
Evaluation Of Aluminum Electrocoagulation Performance Indicators For Decentralized Drinking Water Treatment, Huy Nguyen, Monica Castro Carias
OneUSF Summer Undergraduate Research Symposium
Electrocoagulation (EC) is a promising alternative to conventional chemical coagulation for decentralized drinking water treatment because it generates coagulants on-site , reducing the need for chemical transportation and storage in remote communities. In EC systems, an electric current applied to aluminum electrodes releases species that form solid coagulants capable of removing groundwater contaminants. However, long-term operation remains poorly understood, as electrode degradation through passivation (deposit accumulation) and pitting may reduce coagulant production and treatment efficiency, highlighting the need for practical indicators to track performance. The objective of this study is to evaluate the relationship between current, electrode condition, and aluminum …

Biological Regeneration Of Zeolite For Long-Term Nitrogen Management In Onsite Wastewater Treatment Systems, Hsiang Yang Shyu, Nicole Norwine, Annette Breton, Robert Bair, Daniel Yeh
OneUSF Summer Undergraduate Research Symposium
Nitrogen pollution poses serious risks to human and ecological health, driving toxic algal blooms, degrading fisheries, and threatening communities that rely on clean water resources, making sustainable nitrogen removal technologies essential. This study evaluates whether zeolite—a naturally porous, cation‑adsorbing mineral with high NH₄⁺ capacity—can be biologically regenerated through nitrification and denitrification, eliminating the costly chemical regeneration typically required for long‑term use. A lab‑scale Nutrient Capture System (NCS) was constructed using a granular activated carbon (GAC) bed followed by two tidal‑flow zeolite beds to simulate the Modified Ludzack‑Ettinger process. Synthetic wastewater containing approximately 70 mg/L total nitrogen and 260 mg/L COD …

Exploring Biopolymer Nanofibrous Scaffolds For Wound Healing Applications, James Lewis
OneUSF Summer Undergraduate Research Symposium
Chronic wounds continue to present a significant clinical challenge due to delayed healing, persistent inflammation, and the high risk of infection, creating an urgent need for advanced therapeutic strategies beyond conventional wound dressings. Electrospinning has emerged as a powerful and scalable fabrication technique for developing nanofibrous scaffolds that mimic the native extracellular matrix (ECM) while serving as localized drug delivery platforms. The unique structural characteristics of electrospun nanofibers, including their high surface-area-to-volume ratio, interconnected porosity, and tunable fiber morphology, enable efficient loading, protection, and controlled release of therapeutic agents, promoting a favorable healing environment. In this study, biocompatible and biodegradable …
Theoretical Model For A Poroelastic Membrane Under Uniform Load, Minh Duc Nguyen
Theoretical Model For A Poroelastic Membrane Under Uniform Load, Minh Duc Nguyen
OneUSF Summer Undergraduate Research Symposium
Flexible membrane wings appear throughout both natural and engineered flyers — parachutes, sails, birds, and bats — and are known to confer favorable aerodynamic characteristics through deformation in response to the surrounding flow. To date, flexibility and porosity have largely been studied in isolation, yet in a poroelastic membrane the two are coupled: as the membrane extends under load, its pores stretch with the surface. This study takes the first step toward analyzing that coupling by characterizing how the effective elasticity of the membrane depends on its porosity under uniform static pressure. Circular clamped membranes were simulated across a range …
The Invisible Threat: Traditional Culture-Based Monitoring Misses The Vbnc State, Sarah Fee
The Invisible Threat: Traditional Culture-Based Monitoring Misses The Vbnc State, Sarah Fee
OneUSF Summer Undergraduate Research Symposium
All living organisms share a fundamental biological drive to survive through adaptation. In drinking water systems, pathogens like E. coli utilize survival mechanisms to withstand the chemical disinfectants designed to eliminate them. While treatment with free chlorine or monochloramine successfully stops bacteria from multiplying into colonies, many cells respond to this oxidative stress by shifting into a viable but non-culturable (VBNC) state. In this state, bacteria remain physically intact and potentially virulent but fail to grow on standard agar plates, effectively “disappearing” from the conventional monitoring used to verify water safety. This investigation resolves this monitoring blind spot by utilizing …
Temporal Graph Networks With Dynamic Mode Decomposition For Iomt Threat And Risk Detection, Thinh Pham
Temporal Graph Networks With Dynamic Mode Decomposition For Iomt Threat And Risk Detection, Thinh Pham
OneUSF Summer Undergraduate Research Symposium
The growing use of interconnected medical devices expands the attack surface of healthcare networks and creates the possibility that a compromise affecting one device, gateway, or communication channel may propagate through connected systems, producing cascading operational and patient-safety consequences. This research investigates whether temporal graph learning can improve intrusion detection and dynamic cyber-risk assessment in Internet of Medical Things networks. A Temporal Graph Network represents network flows as time-ordered interactions between communicating devices, uses each interaction to update their evolving behavioral profiles. The model jointly supports attack-type classification, anomaly detection, and dynamic risk scoring. The design also explores Dynamic Mode …

Novel System For On-Pitch Kinematic Analysis Of A Rugby Lineout, Bradley J. Smith, Anthony Valverde Kong, Cathy Holt Phd, Stephanie L. Carey Phd
OneUSF Summer Undergraduate Research Symposium
A previous project at Cardiff University developed a low-cost, field-deployable inertial measurement unit (IMU) system for estimating knee-joint kinematics during rugby lineout lifts and landings. Validation against laboratory-based measurements demonstrated strong static accuracy, excellent temporal agreement, high repeatability, and adequate dynamic accuracy for the intended application, establishing a foundation for field-based biomechanical monitoring. To further evaluate the system, a summer internship at the University of South Florida investigated two proposed future-work objectives: comparison against optical motion capture (OMC) and evaluation of alternative sensor attachment methods to assess soft tissue artefact (STA). Initial testing involving dynamic vertical jump tasks compared IMU-derived …

Synergizing Low-Cost Mobile Manipulation With Retrieval-Augmented Vision-Language-Action Models, Mingyang Mao, Ngoc Bao Dinh, Minh Duong Nguyen
OneUSF Summer Undergraduate Research Symposium
Robotic manipulation is transitioning from specialized, pre-programmed industrial subroutines to generalized, data-driven foundation models. This transition allows robots to utilize semantic reasoning to operate in unstructured environments like households or warehouses. Recent advancements in Vision-Language-Action (VLA) architectures, like RT-2, Octo, and OpenVLA, have improved robotic learning generalizability but still encounter some limitations. VLA research has only been deployed on expensive manipulator hardware, which restricts accessibility and large-scale data collection. In addition, VLA models underperform when encountering out-of-distribution (OOD) semantic instructions, novel object geometries, or complex, long-horizon tasks. Traditionally, expert demonstrations can address the OOD instructions and novel geometries. However, continuous …
Designing Β-Barrel Membrane Protein Using Distributed Structure-To-Sequence Adapters., Tien Dao
Designing Β-Barrel Membrane Protein Using Distributed Structure-To-Sequence Adapters., Tien Dao
OneUSF Summer Undergraduate Research Symposium
Membrane proteins, particularly β-barrel membrane proteins, play essential roles in cellular processes and have growing applications in biotechnology, biosensing, and sequencing technologies. However, de novo design of membrane proteins remains underexplored because current inverse folding models, are primarily trained on soluble proteins and have limited exposure to membrane protein structures. The scarcity of experimentally determined membrane protein structures further limits the development of deep learning models for membrane protein design. In this work, we investigate strategies to retrain ProteinMPNN for membrane protein sequence design by retraining the model on a number of membrane protein datasets consisting of α-helical and β-barrel …

Optimizing Silk Fibroin–Polyethylene Oxide Polymer Blends For Electrospun Nanofibrous Scaffold Fabrication, Lucas Niemas
OneUSF Summer Undergraduate Research Symposium
Cardiovascular disease remains a major cause of morbidity and mortality, often requiring surgical repair or replacement of damaged tissues. Current cardiovascular substitutes, including synthetic grafts, mechanical valve replacements, and biologically derived tissues, have improved patient outcomes but still face limitations such as thrombosis risk, limited remodeling capacity, mechanical mismatch, and durability concerns. Cardiovascular tissue engineering seeks to address these challenges by developing biomimetic scaffolds that support cell attachment, extracellular matrix synthesis, tissue integration, and in vivo adaptation. Silk fibroin is a promising natural biomaterial because of its biocompatibility, tunable degradation, favorable mechanical properties, and anti-inflammatory potential; however, its low solution …
Using Sers For Enhanced Pfoa Detection In Algae, Kyra Everette, Dawson Dodd, Theresa Evans-Nguyen
Using Sers For Enhanced Pfoa Detection In Algae, Kyra Everette, Dawson Dodd, Theresa Evans-Nguyen
OneUSF Summer Undergraduate Research Symposium
Due to growing manufacturing processes runoff and environmental pollution, per- and poly-fluoroalkyl substances (PFAS), also known as “forever chemicals,” bioaccumulate in various waterways, eventually making their way into human bodies. Due to the low intensity signals of forever chemicals, it is notoriously difficult to isolate what cellular processes they impact, especially when using Raman spectroscopy. Here, we employed surface-enhanced Raman spectroscopy (SERS) to increase, detect and localize the perfluorooctanoic acid (PFOA) with gold nanoparticles (AuNPs). AuNPs were intracellularly produced in Chlorella and Scenedesmus algae cells, which acted as enhancers to the low PFOA signal. The production of AuNPs within these …

Development Of High Performance Ammonium Receptors, Angus E. Rhoton, Andrew Victoria, Wenqi Vince Liu
OneUSF Summer Undergraduate Research Symposium
The selective recognition of ammonium ions is highly important for the protection of the environment, treatment of wastewater, and in agriculture. The focus of this project is the development and evaluation of potential synthetic receptors that are capable of strongly and selectively binding ammonium. Known receptor structures are modified by varying the cavity size, molecular geometry, hydrogen bonding groups, and electronic properties. The resulting compounds are evaluated through Nuclear Magnetic Resonance Titrations (NMR) and Isothermal Titration Calorimetry (ITC) to confirm binding and quantify their affinity for ammonium. The goal of this work is to identify promising receptor structures and to …
Glycoconjugate Binding: Lectin Affinity For Structurally Differing Sugars On Cavitands, Erica D. Janmey
Glycoconjugate Binding: Lectin Affinity For Structurally Differing Sugars On Cavitands, Erica D. Janmey
OneUSF Summer Undergraduate Research Symposium
Lectins are proteins that interact with sugars on cell membranes and bind with known affinities. Isothermal Titration Calorimetry (ITC) can give insight into entropy (ΔS), enthalpy (ΔH), stoichiometry (n) and the dissociation constant, KD. Resorcin[4]arene cavitand glycoconjugates were synthesized by attaching one of three sugar derivatives of glucose, mannose, and lactose to each of the cavitands for the purpose of comparing binding strength for concanavalin A between the glycosides and their simple sugar. The glycoconjugate structure differs from that of glycans, and therefore the differences in interactions between the sugars on the cavitands must be investigated. The multivalent resorcinarene glycoconjugates …
Llm-Assisted Detection And Repair Of Hardware Security Vulnerabilities In Verilog Designs, Ethen Santana, Gabriel Gyaase
Llm-Assisted Detection And Repair Of Hardware Security Vulnerabilities In Verilog Designs, Ethen Santana, Gabriel Gyaase
OneUSF Summer Undergraduate Research Symposium
Hardware designs, like software, are susceptible to bugs that can introduce security vulnerabilities and create opportunities for malicious exploitation. Unlike software vulnerabilities, however, hardware flaws become permanently embedded in silicon after fabrication, making them difficult or impossible to patch. Many of these weaknesses are categorized under the Common Weakness Enumeration (CWE) framework and include improper access control, exposure of sensitive information, and unintended privilege escalation. To improve the detection of such vulnerabilities, we propose a methodology that leverages a Large Language Model (LLM) to identify potential hardware CWEs directly from hardware designs in Verilog. The proposed approach is evaluated iteratively …

Computational Modeling Of Electrospinning For Predicting Nanofiber Fabrication And Process Optimization, Jadon J. Orr, Rhidita Rahman Khan
Computational Modeling Of Electrospinning For Predicting Nanofiber Fabrication And Process Optimization, Jadon J. Orr, Rhidita Rahman Khan
OneUSF Summer Undergraduate Research Symposium
Electrospinning is a widely used Fabrication technique for producing continuous polymeric nanofibers with application in designing more efficient optoelectronic devices, sensors, producing filtration systems, wound healing, tissue regeneration, drug delivery , forming advanced functional nanomaterial structures. The successful formation of electro-spun fibers depends on complex interaction among polymer concentration, solution viscosity, molecular chain entanglement, solvent properties, applied voltage, tip-collector-distance, and solution flow rate. Determining the optimum electrospinning condition traditionally achieved through repeated experimental trial and error, makes the process time consuming, costly, and difficult to reproduce across different polymer-solvent systems. Developing computational tools capable of predicting fiber formation can significantly …

Smartphone-Based Profiling Of Industrial Control Systems Using Magnetic Side Channels, Michelle Mcaveety, Rylan Pietras, Robert Karam
OneUSF Summer Undergraduate Research Symposium
Industrial Control Systems (ICS) have increasingly been subject to malicious cyber attacks, thus threatening the operational safety, stability, and reliability of critical infrastructure. While existing research has utilized electromagnetic, timing, and audiovisual side channels for ICS attacks, the offensive utility of magnetic side channels in these environments has yet to be explored. Utilizing the magnetometers present in modern-day smartphones, the magnetic fields produced by the Programmable Logic Controller (PLC), Human-Machine Interface (HMI), Linear Actuator Controller, and AC-to-DC Power Converter are recorded. Magnetic field data then undergoes signal processing coupled with machine learning classification on extracted feature vectors to determine the …

On Shrinkage Estimators For Pareto Ii Parameters For Right Censored Type Ii Data, Jubran Abdulameer Labban, Hadeel Alkutubi
Iraqi Journal for Computer Science and Mathematics
The aim of this study is to estimate the first two shrinkage estimators for the parameters of the Pareto II distribution with right-censored Type II data. The methods we used in this study are: maximum likelihood and Bayesian. In the Bayesian method, we use non-informative priority, which is Jeffries priority, and we use the squared error loss function. These estimators were compared through Monte Carlo simulation to indicate preference based on the mean square error criterion.
Uni-Body Steam Recovery Engine For Simultaneous Condensate Recovery, Water Heating And Pump-Less Hydraulic Pumping, Jun Ying Yew
Uni-Body Steam Recovery Engine For Simultaneous Condensate Recovery, Water Heating And Pump-Less Hydraulic Pumping, Jun Ying Yew
Defensive Publications Series
Steam recovery in industrial processing typically requires separate units for condensate recovery, water heating and fluid pumping, each adding capital cost and mechanical complexity. This disclosure describes a uni-body steam recovery engine (“apparatus”) that integrates these three functions — condensate recovery, water heating and hydraulic pumping — within a single structural housing. Hydraulic pumping is achieved without a dedicated mechanical pump by using the pressure differential of the recovered steam to displace condensate and working liquid through the system. The structural arrangement, custom hardware components and control methods governing the cyclic operation of the apparatus are disclosed herein. A proof-of-concept …

Schema-Validated Field-Level Data Retention Policy Coupled To A Live Database Schema, Driving Automated Per-Field Erasure, Alpenshield Gmbh
Defensive Publications Series
A data platform carries machine-readable retention policy at the granularity of individual tables and columns: for each column, what is stored, why, for how long, and the terminal action (delete the row, null the field, or overwrite the field with a placeholder where the platform marks the column required and a null write would be rejected), while preserving the audit trail. The policy is embedded in version-controlled schema documentation and validated on every build against a periodically captured snapshot of the live database schema, so a policy referencing a column that does not exist, or nulling a column the platform …

Model-Agnostic Search-Augmented Llm Pipelines For Production-Scale Company Data Validation, Enrichment And Normalization, Hp Inc
Defensive Publications Series
This paper presents a vendor-agnostic, search-augmented large language model (LLM) pipeline that validates, enriches, and normalizes company records using grounded information from public web sources. The pipeline addresses enterprise requirements for official names, addresses, tax identifiers, revenue, industry classifications, and related compliance metadata where manual validation, database lookups, and rule-based integration pipelines struggle with incomplete, inconsistent, multilingual, and region-specific inputs. The architecture uses a central control framework to orchestrate native-search and tool-calling web-enabled LLM providers under production constraints, including context limits, tokens-per-minute (TPM), requests-per-minute (RPM), maximum batch size, concurrency, incomplete outputs, safety filtering, and provider-specific response formats. It combines batch-admission …

Resource-Constrained Multiprocessing Packet Pipeline With Shared Configurable Elements, N/A, N/A
Defensive Publications Series
A subsystem for network packet processing uses a pool of shared, configurable processing resources. The architecture includes these shared processing elements, a centralized event processing engine, and a partitionable shared memory. The event processing engine accumulates events from the packet pipeline and forwards them as tasks to the processing elements. These elements, which may be implemented as microcode sequencers, execute writable microcode firmware to perform logical and arithmetic operations and handle interrupts independently of a central processing unit. The processing elements access the shared memory to exchange state and packet data between processing stages. This approach improves resource utilization and …

Automated Clock Domain Crossing Maximum Delay Constraint Application Using Intermediate Anchor Gates, N/A, N/A
Defensive Publications Series
The technology manages clock domain crossing paths by applying a maximum delay constraint to a designated intermediate anchor gate instead of the final destination flip-flop. The register-transfer level configuration instantiates a specific logic gate, such as a MASK AND gate, as this anchor point and assigns it a standardized name. During compilation, a software script automatically discovers these anchors by name and applies a localized, point-to-point delay constraint directly to the pins of the anchors. This pin-to-pin anchoring decouples the timing constraint from the final sampling logic. This approach results in greater placement flexibility for the destination logic across the …

Semantic Graph Reconciliation Using Functional Fingerprinting, Rishabh Singhal, Vijai Kalyan
Defensive Publications Series
Comparing versions of graph-based workflows can present challenges, as methods relying on volatile identifiers may interpret a node rename as separate deletion and addition operations, while other structural comparison techniques can be computationally expensive. Systems and methods are described for semantic comparison using a multi-pass reconciliation algorithm that employs functional fingerprinting. This process can involve generating a content-based hash value for each node after programmatically excluding non-semantic data, such as unique identifiers and graphical coordinates. By comparing these fingerprints, a system can identify nodes that were renamed. This approach can facilitate a linear-time semantic reconciliation of workflow graphs, providing a …
The Dynamic Schema Generation With Error-Triggered Renegotiation For Agent-Tool Binding, Nicolas Zimmermann, Isaac Leimgruber
The Dynamic Schema Generation With Error-Triggered Renegotiation For Agent-Tool Binding, Nicolas Zimmermann, Isaac Leimgruber
Defensive Publications Series
Some methods for binding autonomous agents to external tools can rely on static interface schemas, which may be inefficient, for example, by consuming large context windows, and can be brittle to changes in a tool's application programming interface. A system is described where an agent can transmit a semantic intent describing a desired task outcome. In response, one or more tool providers can dynamically generate a minimal, task-specific interface specification tailored to that intent. The system can also feature an error-triggered renegotiation mechanism, allowing an agent to report an execution failure, which prompts the provider to generate and resubmit a …
