Intermediate Representation Randomization For Unique Software Builds, Joshua Mason
Intermediate Representation Randomization For Unique Software Builds, Joshua Mason
Defensive Publications Series
Software applications distributed as identical copies may present a vulnerability because an exploit discovered in one instance could be replicated across others due to shared internal structures. This publication describes a method to address this vulnerability by generating unique software builds, and which in instances could be used for each download request. The method operates by compiling an application into an intermediate representation, such as a low level virtual machine intermediate representation (LLVM IR) bytecode. Upon receiving a download request, the method performs randomized transformations on the LLVM IR elements, thereby changing the locations of functions, basic block ordering, instruction …

Background and Objectives: Understanding the reliability of outcomes used in clinical care and trials is important to delineate intervention-induced change from random variability. Reliability, sensitivity, and clinical meaningfulness of change are all key aspects of choosing the most appropriate outcome measure for a clinical trial. Common outcome measures to monitor progression and treatment effect in Duchenne muscular dystrophy (DMD) include measures of strength (myometry) and motor function tests: stand from supine velocity (STANDV), North Star Ambulatory Assessment (NSAA), 6-minute walk distance (6MWD), 10-m run/walk (RWV), and 4-stair climb velocity (CLIMBV). Our objective was to present test-retest reliability of common outcome …

Subarctic cities notoriously experience severe winter pollution episodes with fine particle (PM2.5) concentrations above 35 µg m−3, the US Environmental Protection Agency (EPA) 24 h standard. While winter sources of primary particles in Fairbanks, Alaska, have been studied, the chemistry driving secondary particle formation is elusive. Biomass burning is a major source of wintertime primary particles, making the PM2.5 rich in light-absorbing brown carbon (BrC). When BrC absorbs sunlight, it produces photooxidants – reactive species potentially important for secondary sulfate and secondary organic aerosol formation – yet photooxidant measurements in high-latitude PM2.5 remain scarce. During the winter of 2022 Alaskan …

Doctoral Dissertations and Projects
Burnout is a costly phenomenon, and creating a comprehensive model of wellness to increase resiliency to burnout is a complex task worth the endeavor (Eckleberry-Hunt et al., 2009). The negative correlation between self-care and burnout is well-known (Shanafelt et al., 2020). Models such as the psychological capital model (Youssef‐Morgan & Luthans, 2015) have provided insight into the relationship. Several findings since the inception of the psychological capital model indicate that other phenomena are involved in increasing resistance to counselor burnout. The positive relationship between meaningful work and counselor burnout resistance is well documented through peer-reviewed literature. Mental health professionals experience …

San Diego Law Review
This Article supplements scholarly commentary on the U.S. Supreme Court’s 2021 decision in TransUnion LLC v. Ramirez by examining some critical issues that the underlying litigation in the lower courts raised but that the Supreme Court did not address in its review. Although scholars have analyzed and critiqued the Supreme Court’s Ramirez decision, the litigation as a whole has been neglected. The Ramirez trial and the Ninth Circuit opinions that preceded Supreme Court review are fertile vehicles for reflecting on important issues that arise when class actions are tried to a jury.
The Article argues that Ramirez illustrates a problem …

The extraordinary mechanical flexibility, high electrical conductivity, and nanoscale instability of freestanding graphene make it an excellent candidate for vibration energy harvesting. When freestanding graphene is stretched taut and subject to external forces, it will vibrate like a drum head. Its vibrations occur at a fundamental frequency along with higher-order harmonics. Alternatively, when freestanding graphene is compressed, it will arch slightly out of the plane or buckle under the load. Remaining flat under compression would be energetically too costly compared to simple bond rotations. Buckling up or down, also known as ripple formation, naturally creates a bistable situation. When the …

Living systems display complex behaviors driven by physical forces as well as decision-making. Hydrodynamic theories hold promise for simplified universal descriptions of socially generated collective behaviors. However, the construction of such theories is often divorced from the data they should describe. Here, we develop and apply a data-driven pipeline that links micromotives to macrobehavior by augmenting hydrodynamics with individual preferences that guide motion. We illustrate this pipeline on a case study of residential dynamics in the United States, for which census and sociological data are available. Guided by Census data, sociological surveys, and neural network analysis, we systematically assess standard …
Rumination As A Moderator In The Relationship Between Divine Forgiveness And Forgiveness Of Self In Older Adults, Christopher R. Giles
Rumination As A Moderator In The Relationship Between Divine Forgiveness And Forgiveness Of Self In Older Adults, Christopher R. Giles
Doctoral Dissertations and Projects
A growing body of research supports empirical evidence that the ability to self-forgive benefits mental, emotional, and physical health. Recent literature has documented the predictive relationship between divine forgiveness and self-forgiveness. However, little attention has been given to the cognitive processes that may influence this relationship. Furthermore, research on forgiveness has largely overlooked the older adult population, despite forgiveness being shown to be a developmental construct. This quantitative correlational study examined the relationship between offense-specific divine forgiveness, rumination, and self-forgiveness in individuals aged 60 and older. Data were collected from 101 participants through an anonymous online survey utilizing previously validated …

Notifying The Public In Crisis Situations, Deborah Jean Link
Doctoral Dissertations and Projects
The messages that are provided to the public when there is an imminent or ongoing crisis are of extreme value to individuals, primarily to have information by which to base decisions upon. The sense of urgency during imminent or ongoing crisis is the factor that differentiates the need for information about the crisis from the need for information for other types of events. There is messaging during other, less critical types of incidents, but often there is little to no messaging to the public at a time when it is most needed and sought after, during a crisis. Erik J. …
