Fpga-Based Overlay Accelerators With Massive Parallel Processing Units To Accelerate Deep Neural Networks, Ehsan Kabir
Graduate Theses and Dissertations
Deep neural networks (DNNs) are widely used in applications such as classification, prediction, and regression. Various DNN architectures, such as convolutional neural networks (CNN), multilayer perceptrons (MLP), long short-term memory (LSTM), recurrent neural networks (RNN), and transformers, have become leading machine learning techniques in these applications. They require significant computational resources and have substantial memory demands due to intensive matrix-matrix multiplications and complex data flows. Hence, efficient utilization of on-chip computational and memory resources is essential to maximize parallelism and minimize latency. Designing an optimal tiling scheme that aligns effectively with the architecture is also necessary. Modern FPGAs are equipped …

Algorithmic Governance And The Boardroom: Empirical And Strategic Perspectives On Ai Integration In Corporate And Educational Oversight, James Hutson, Guarango Banerjee
Faculty Scholarship
The accelerating digitization of executive decision-making has prompted critical re-examination of the function and value of traditional boards of directors within corporate and educational institutions. Empirical research consistently reveals that human boards, while ostensibly tasked with strategic insight and fiduciary oversight, are frequently constrained by structural inefficiencies—such as director overcommitment, inflated compensation, and persistent conflicts of interest—that undermine organizational performance. Against this backdrop, the integration of Artificial Intelligence agents, either as analytic adjuncts or autonomous decision-makers, emerges as a plausible avenue for enhancing board effectiveness. This article synthesizes global case studies, peer-reviewed findings, and real-time technological developments to critically evaluate …

Soil ecosystem services, like the ability to store water, have been depleted after a century of conventional, annual cropping, and perennial crops offer a solution to this and other agricultural environmental issues. We assessed the impact of Miscanthus × giganteus (miscanthus), a perennial biomass crop, on soil water holding capacity and structure compared to continuous maize (Zea mays L.) at two sites in Iowa. After three growing seasons, we measured the following: (1) maximum water holding capacity (MWHC) with and without soil structure, and (2) total porosity and pore size distribution (PSD) via micro-computed tomography (microCT). Miscanthus increased MWHC …

Neuro-Ins: A Learning-Based One-Shot Node Insertion For Dynamic Routing Problems, Zhiqin Zhang, Jingfeng Yang, Zhiguang Cao, Hoong Chuin Lau
Research Collection School Of Computing and Information Systems
The rise in instant delivery services necessitates efficient route planning in last-mile delivery scenarios, where new orders arrive dynamically and need to be integrated into existing routes. In such contexts, complete re-optimization of routes are not permitted, and node insertion to existing route sequences is the only viable option. However, many existing heuristics for node insertion, such as the Cheapest Insertion (CI) method, are myopic and often result in suboptimal solutions retrospectively. This paper presents Neuro-Ins, an initial yet novel attempt at harnessing a learning-based framework to handle the insertion of new orders for the Pickup and Delivery Problem (PDP). …

Shortcuts Everywhere And Nowhere: Exploring Multi-Trigger Backdoor Attacks, Yige Li, Jiabo He, Hanxun Huang, Jun Sun, Xingjun Ma, Yu-Gang Jiang
Research Collection School Of Computing and Information Systems
Backdoor attacks have become a significant threat to the pre-training and deployment of deep neural networks (DNNs). Although numerous methods for detecting and mitigating backdoor attacks have been proposed, most rely on identifying and eliminating the “shortcut” created by the backdoor, which links a specific source class to a target class. However, these approaches can be easily circumvented by designing multiple backdoor triggers that create shortcuts everywhere and therefore nowhere specific. In this study, we explore the concept of Multi-Trigger Backdoor Attacks (MTBAs), where multiple adversaries leverage different types of triggers to poison the same dataset. By proposing and investigating …
Reimagining Academic Assessment In The Age Of Ai, Matthew Hammerton
Reimagining Academic Assessment In The Age Of Ai, Matthew Hammerton
Research Collection School of Social Sciences
In ‘Reimagining Academic Assessment in the Age of AI’, Matthew Hammerton examines the challenges and opportunities posed by generative AI for higher education assessment. He critiques common responses like banning AI, reverting to in-class exams, or abandoning essays altogether, arguing that they fail to preserve the deeper pedagogical goals of higher order, independent thinking. Instead, Hammerton proposes a guiding principle of intellectual responsibility: students should be accountable for explaining and defending each major choice in their work—regardless of whether they use AI tools. To operationalise this, he advocates for reintegrating oral examinations (‘vivas’) alongside written essays. In this model, students …
What Are The Limits To Smart Innovation? The Digital Underground Initiative And New Frontiers Of “Smartness” In Singapore, Prerona Das, Orlando Woods, Lily Kong
What Are The Limits To Smart Innovation? The Digital Underground Initiative And New Frontiers Of “Smartness” In Singapore, Prerona Das, Orlando Woods, Lily Kong
Research Collection College of Integrative Studies
This paper argues that the emergence of new frontiers of smart transformation, such as underground spaces, can pose significant challenges to the implementation of “smart” technological solutions. Exploring the case of Singapore’s Digital Underground initiative, we show that elements such as material complexity, co-ordination between stakeholders, and the availability of appropriate regulatory and administrative frameworks can problematize the implementation of subterranean smart initiatives. By considering multistake-holder perspectives on these “more-than-technological” factors, this paper offers lessons for urban planners, policymakers, and developers in cities around the world that are keen to leverage technology to unlock the potential of underground space.

Optimal Abort Policy For Mission-Critical Systems Under Imperfect Condition Monitoring, Qiuzhuang Sun, Jiawen Hu, Zhi-Sheng Ye
Research Collection College of Integrative Studies
Although most on-demand mission-critical systems are engineered to be reliable to support critical tasks, occasional failures may still occur during missions. To increase system survivability, a common practice is to abort the mission before an imminent failure. We consider optimal mission abort for a system whose deterioration follows a general three-state (normal, defective, failed) semi-Markov chain. The failure is assumed self-revealed, whereas the healthy and defective states have to be inferred from imperfect condition-monitoring data. Because of the non-Markovian process dynamics, optimal mission abort for this partially observable system is an intractable stopping problem. For a tractable solution, we introduce …

Experimental And Theoretical Studies Of Novel Resilient Smart Shear Keys For Speedy Functional Recovery Of Highway Bridges After Extreme Events, Xinzhe Yuan, Jun Han, Jian Zhong, Haibin Zhang, Genda Chen
Civil, Architectural and Environmental Engineering Faculty Research & Creative Works
Sacrificial shear keys in small-to-medium-span highway bridges mainly provide lateral support to the bridge superstructure under extreme events such as earthquake and/or tsunami. However, such support could lead to irreparable harm to important bridge elements like abutments and bent caps (base), delaying the functional recovery of bridges in the aftermath. In addition, existing designs of the shear key primarily emphasize resistant capacity but overlook resilience. This study introduces a new sliding, modular, adaptive, replaceable, and two-dimensional (SMART) shear key designed to enhance the resilience of I-girder highway bridges. The SMART shear key has three primary goals: 1) enabling the rapid …

Positive Effects Of Sulfates On Performance Of Cement Paste Incorporating Low-Grade, High-Aluminum Steel Slag, Nannan Zhang, Gao Deng, Wenyu Liao, Chuanlin Hu, Hongyan Ma
Civil, Architectural and Environmental Engineering Faculty Research & Creative Works
Steel slag with high aluminum (Al) content significantly delays the early hydration of cement when used as a supplementary cementitious material (SCM). To address this challenge, this study investigates the effects of gypsum (Gy) and sodium sulfate (SS) additions on the performance of cement pastes with 30 % high-Al ladle metallurgy furnace (LMF) slag. The mechanical properties, hydration kinetics, phase evolution, as well as the early-age hydration mechanism were explored. The results indicate that C3S hydration is substantially inhibited under high-Al conditions, mainly attributed to the rapid dissolution and reaction of reactive aluminates (particularly mayenite) in the slag. Both Gy …

This study employs ensemble learning algorithms to accurately predict the shear capacity of studs embedded in ultrahigh performance concrete (UHPC), a critical aspect of structural engineering. Using a comprehensive data set featuring six UHPC slab features, seven stud features, and one shear pocket feature, 35 ensemble models are developed across five cases and seven algorithms (bagging, random forest, AdaBoost, gradient boosting, XGBoost, CatBoost, and LightGBM). The Shapley additive explanations (SHAP) analysis is conducted on the top-performing models to gain insights into their decision-making mechanisms. Results indicate that transforming UHPC slab geometry parameters into a volume, alongside different diameter ratios, proves …
