Realization of large effective phonon magnetic moment in monolayer MoS2 has established an important route for exploring intriguing magnetic phenomena in a nonmagnetic material. The sizable coupling between the orbital transition and the circularly polarized phonon results in the large effective phonon magnetic moment. In this work, using magneto-Raman spectroscopy, we investigate substitutional doping of magnetic atoms as a tuning knob of the electronic and phononic properties of MoS2. We show that Fe-doping polarizes the spin of the conduction bands and introduces a localized Fe band underneath the conduction band. As a result, an additional orbital transition between the Mo …

Ground-Based Modeling Of Deep-Space Risks To The Spleen And Intestine In Mice, Edith Nathalie Pineda Sotomayor

Theses and Dissertations

Deep-space missions, such as those planned for the cis-lunar space and Mars, pose unique challenges to astronaut health due to prolonged microgravity (MG) exposure and low-dose chronic irradiation (CIR). Understanding the impact of these stressors on secondary lymphoid tissues, such as the spleen and intestine, is crucial for ensuring crewmembers' well-being, given the impracticality of conducting this research with human samples. Using a ground-based facility, we exposed C57BL/6 female and male mice to CIR (1.74 Gy at a dose rate of 0.0029 Gy/h) and/or simulated MG (SMG) via hind limb unloading (HLU) for one month. Spleen and intestinal tissues were …

Student Publications

N6-methyladenosine (m6A) is the most prevalent internal modification in eukaryotic messenger RNA (mRNA) and plays a vital role in post-transcriptional gene regulation. In recent years, m6A has emerged as a pivotal epitranscriptomic signal involved in neural development, synaptic remodeling, and the molecular pathophysiology of neuropsychiatric disorders. In this review, we summarize the mechanisms underlying the deposition, removal, and recognition of m6A by dedicated methyltransferases, demethylases, and RNA-binding proteins. We further explore how these dynamic modifications influence neuronal differentiation and memory formation. Recent studies have linked aberrant m6A regulation to psychiatric …

Civil, Architectural and Environmental Engineering Faculty Research & Creative Works

Accurately assessing asphalt mixtures' moisture susceptibility is critical because moisture damage can significantly reduce pavement durability, leading to premature failure and structural integrity of the pavement. The stripping inflection point (SIP), a moisture susceptibility index derived from the Hamburg Wheel Track (HWT) test, has practical merits in evaluating moisture susceptibility. However, current methods for determining the SIP showed low accuracy and high variability due to poor regression quality. Hence, this study aims to propose an improved method for calculating the SIP by modifying existing approaches to better capture the characteristics of rutting curves. Typical asphalt mixtures were used to conduct …

Light-gated ion channels from protists (channelrhodopsins or ChRs) are optogenetic tools widely used for controlling neurons and cardiomyocytes. Multiplex optogenetic applications require spectrally separated molecules, which are difficult to engineer without disrupting channel function. Scanning numerous sequence databases, we identified three naturally blue-shifted ChRs from ancyromonads. They form a separate branch on the phylogenetic tree and contain residue motifs characteristic of anion ChRs (ACRs). However, only two conduct chloride, whereas the closely related Nutomonas longa homolog generates inward cation currents in mammalian cells under physiological conditions, significantly exceeding those by previously known tools with similar spectral maxima (peak absorption at …

Carrier concentrations were found to be 1.16×10^21 m^(-3) for the p-type sample and 7.337×10^20 m^(-3) for the n-type sample. These experiments were conducted for the standard Hall effect (Hall voltage versus low magnetic field (B) values) as well as conductivity and Hall voltage versus temperature for different B-fields. The measurements versus temperature at zero-field allow us to obtain band gap ( Eg). While we investigate the conductivities for n-type and p-type doped samples, we also study the conductivity of an undoped …

Real-Time Contextual File Suggestion For Prompt Formulation, Brett Barros, Ken Martin Sep 2025

Real-Time Contextual File Suggestion For Prompt Formulation, Brett Barros, Ken Martin

Defensive Publications Series

Formulating effective prompts often requires manually curating relevant contextual information, which is a time-consuming and effort-intensive process. Including irrelevant context can degrade the quality of the response, while current automated methods for context selection operate after prompt submission, leaving the user out of the loop and risking incorrect context inclusion. This disclosure describes a method for dynamically suggesting relevant files and other contextual information as a user types a prompt. A lightweight model predicts and displays potential context sources, such as documents, emails, or meeting transcripts, in real-time. Users can then select these suggestions to append them to the prompt …
