International Nursing Research Congress (INRC)
Background/Purpose: Delirium is a serious and often under-recognized condition in hospitalized patients, particularly in critical and acute care settings. Nurses play a key role in delirium prevention, screening, and management.1 However, nurses may not consistently use evidence-based practices when caring for patients with delirium.2,3 Research shows that nurses’ attitudes and perceptions towards delirium can significantly affect the quality of delirium care.4,5 It is important to identify and understand nursing perceptions of delirium to address barriers in delirium prevention and management. Currently, there is no valid instrument to assess nursing perceptions when caring for patients with delirium. The study aimed to …
The Impact Of Removing Concepts Of Health Equity From Us Nursing Education: A Scoping Review, Michael Mosley, Felesia Bowen
The Impact Of Removing Concepts Of Health Equity From Us Nursing Education: A Scoping Review, Michael Mosley, Felesia Bowen
International Nursing Research Congress (INRC)
Purpose: Racial bias contributes to health disparities. Efforts to increase awareness of principles of diversity, equity, and inclusion (DEI) are needed to reduce health disparities. Increasing diversity of the U.S. population highlights an imperative that student nurses graduate with the skills necessary to care for all patients. Proliferation of anti-DEI laws has meant that in some states, faculty are not able to teach about diversity and the root causes of health disparities. Some faculty have reported they are removing content related to social determinants of health from their lectures and readings for fear of losing their jobs. The purpose of …

Fine-Tuning A Domain-Specific Language Model For Truss Structural Analysis, Rajon Dey, Weidong Wu, Yu Liang, Joseph Owino, Ignatius Fomunung, Mbakisya A. Onyango
UTC Spring Research and Arts Conference
This research investigates the feasibility of fine-tuning a domain-specific language model (LLM) to enhance the accuracy and accessibility of truss structural analysis. General-purpose AI models, such as ChatGPT, often struggle with engineering-specific problems due to insufficient domain knowledge. To address this, we propose fine-tuning a small LLM tailored for structural engineering tasks, with truss analysis using the stiffness method as a case study. The project leverages a curated dataset of textual and diagrammatic inputs from engineering textbooks, manuals, and solved examples. Image-to-text tools will translate structural diagrams into machine-readable formats, reducing data preparation costs while maintaining numerical precision. Fine-tuning involves …
Measuring The Impact Of Network Underlay Outages On Cloud And Production Networks, N/A
Measuring The Impact Of Network Underlay Outages On Cloud And Production Networks, N/A
Defensive Publications Series
A new approach is provided for measuring the impact of network underlay (Layer 3) outages on customer-facing services, such as internal applications (Layer 7) and external cloud virtual machines (VMs). The approach performs a cross-layer impact analysis by correlating low-level network performance data with customer-level metrics within fine-grained time intervals. By comparing performance across layers for the same network path and time, the system can distinguish between L3 outages that are successfully mitigated ("repaired") and those that "surface" to the customer. The resulting metric, "surfaced SLO burn," quantifies the actual customer-experienced outage, enabling more accurate measurement of the issues and …

Service Activation Test Solution Over Evpn Multi Homed Networks, Anonymous
Defensive Publications Series
This disclosure relates to enhancements in Service Activation Test (SAT) methodologies for Ethernet VPN (EVPN) networks employing multi-homing with all-active redundancy. Conventional SAT methods, such as those defined in RFC 2544 and ITU-T Y.1564, assume symmetric traffic paths and do not account for Equal-Cost Multi-Path (ECMP) forwarding behavior in EVPN VPLS, VPWS, or FXC deployments. As a result, test frames may traverse non-deterministic paths, causing inaccurate or incomplete service-level measurements. The disclosed solution introduces a uni-directional SAT framework that computes throughput, latency, jitter, and frame-loss on forward paths only, avoiding reliance on reverse traffic. The approach utilizes three functional elements: …

SDL developed a small satellite payload to support the NICEcube mission concept capable of measuring vertical profiles of infrared radiance at 5.3 µm from nitric oxide (NO) in the atmospheric limb (100-250 km). These radiance measurements can be directly inverted to achieve vertical profiles of infrared cooling rates which are crucial to understanding the density response to the thermosphere in times of elevated geomagnetic activity. The payload was designed to fit on a 12U cube sat, function at low power and small mechanical envelope. Completed work includes building the telescope, integrating a representative detector, alignment, test planning, and initial testing. …

Performance Evaluation Of Machine Learning Applications Using Webassembly Across Different Programming Languages, Sallar Khan, Tania Malik, Khalid Hasanov
Research Outputs: 2025-Present
WebAssembly (WASM) has emerged as a promising compilation target for languages traditionally not executed on the web and enable the cross-platform deployment of high-performance applications. While its general use cases have been well studied, the performance implications of executing Machine Learning (ML) workloads via WASM across different programming languages and runtime environments remain relatively unexplored. This paper presents a systematic evaluation of two representative ML models, K-Means and Logistic Regression, implemented in Python, Rust, and C++ and compiled to WASM. These models are executed in two distinct environments: a web browser and the WebAssembly System Interface (WASI), and their execution …

Gerard Manley Hopkins, Sj: Master Architect Of The Company Of Poets, Timothy J. Wesley
College of Education Theses and Dissertations
It has been 107 years since the first collected Poems of Gerard Manley Hopkins, SJ were published by the poet-scholar’s friend and confidant Robert Seymour Bridges. Literary commentators, historians, and theologians have sought to understand the great poet of the Jesuits since the posthumous release of the poetry to the wide world in 1918. Of the many angles on Hopkins’s life that have been analyzed and examined, we could name a few: his sublimated sexuality, his identity as a religious priest, the poet’s placement within The Victorian Period, a voice of apologetic theology within Modernity, a political eco-centric voice, and …

Upjohn Institute Working Papers
Despite widespread concern about teacher shortages, there is little evidence on when teaching positions are posted and how many people apply for them. Using detailed job-posting and application data on nearly 57,000 applicants from 19 traditional school districts and 24 charter organizations, we provide descriptive evidence on the timing of job postings, the supply of applicants, and the characteristics of applicants, emphasizing how each varies across organizations and between the district and charter sectors. We find that late hiring is less prevalent than prior single-district studies suggest—about 11% of openings are posted late—but varies widely across organizations. Applicant supply differs …

Ferric Metal-Organic Frameworks (Mofs)-Based Electrospinning Fibers For Supercapacitors, Samar A. Salim, Hani Nasser Abdelhamid
Nanotechnology Research Centre
Ferric-based metal-organic frameworks (Fe-MOFs) were synthesized and incorporated into poly(methyl methacrylate) (PMMA) using electrospinning to produce PMMA_Fe-MOF nanofibers. The materials were analyzed using X-ray diffraction (XRD), attenuated total reflectance Fourier-transform infrared spectroscopy (ATR-FTIR), and scanning electron microscopy (SEM). The electrospun materials were directly integrated into nickel foam (NF) electrodes for energy storage applications, e.g., supercapacitors. The electrochemical performance was assessed using cyclic voltammetry (CV), galvanostatic charge-discharge curves (GCDC), linear sweep voltammetry (LSV), and electrochemical potentiokinetic reactivation (EPR). The PMMA_Fe-MOF electrodes exhibited outstanding capacitive performance, achieving specific capacitances of up to 1017.5 F/g at 1 A/g for the 2.5 % Fe-MOF …

Methylmalonic acidemia (MMA) is a severe metabolic disorder affecting multiple organs because of a distal block in branched-chain amino acid (BCAA) catabolism. Standard of care is limited to protein restriction and supportive care during metabolic decompensation. Severe cases require liver/kidney transplantation, and there is a clear need for better therapy. Here, we investigated the effects of a small molecule branched-chain amino acid transaminase (BCAT) inhibitor in human MMA hepatocytes and an MMA mouse model. Mitochondrial BCAT is the first step in BCAA catabolism, and reduction of flux through an early enzymatic step is successfully used in other amino acid metabolic …

Underwater Acoustic Integrated Sensing And Communication: A Spatio-Temporal Freshness For Intelligent Resource Prioritization, Ananya Hazarika, Mehdi Rahmati
Electrical and Computer Engineering Faculty Publications
Underwater acoustic communication faces significant challenges including limited bandwidth, high propagation delays, severe multipath fading, and stringent energy constraints. While integrated sensing and communication (ISAC) has shown promise in radio frequency systems, its adaptation to underwater environments remains challenging due to the unique acoustic channel characteristics and the inadequacy of traditional delay-based performance metrics that fail to capture the spatio-temporal value of information in dynamic underwater scenarios. This paper presents a comprehensive underwater ISAC framework centered on a novel Spatio-Temporal Information-Theoretic Freshness metric that fundamentally transforms resource allocation from delay minimization to value maximization. Unlike conventional approaches that treat all …

Osteoarthritis is a prevalent joint disease in the aging population. The hallmark of osteoarthritis is the degeneration of the joint cartilage, characterized by changes in chondrocytes including mitochondrial dysfunction. However, the precise mechanisms of how this affects chondrocyte homeostasis and whether such processes can be explored as therapeutic targets for osteoarthritis remain unclear. Here, we show that impaired mitochondrial function and disrupted cartilage matrix metabolism due to loss of mitofusin-2 (MFN2) expression in chondrocytes leads to the development of osteoarthritis. Sirtuin-3 (SIRT3), a key regulator of mitochondrial function, plays a critical role in modulating MFN2 to restore mitochondrial dynamics, reduce …

Adult hippocampal neurogenesis, the process of generating new neurons, relies on a rare population of neural stem and progenitor cells (NPCs) within the dentate gyrus complex microenvironment. Discovering the specific genes that define these cells is vital yet challenging due to overlapping expression patterns, limiting detection of rare cell populations using traditional approaches. By employing the computational digital sorting algorithm (DSA) that deconvolves complex gene expression data based on pattern recognition, we identified 129 genes enriched in murine NPCs. We validated these genes against published single-cell RNA sequencing (scRNA-seq) data and discovered that 25 human orthologs were known to cause …
