Family And Consumer Sciences Extension Is Stem, Gina Peek, Kimberly Williams, Kelly Wardlaw, Susan Routh
Journal of Extension
Family and consumer sciences (FCS) has a foundation in science, technology, engineering, and math (STEM). We developed a simple framework with three criteria to identify and evaluate family and consumer sciences Extension STEM resources. Results indicate that STEM resources are more readily available in certain family and consumer sciences content areas. This simple framework can be applied to other Extension program areas to strengthen and articulate STEM concepts.

Integrating Complete Bond Dissociation In Class Ii Force Fields, Joshua Kemppainen, Hendrik Heinz, Gregory M. Odegard
Integrating Complete Bond Dissociation In Class Ii Force Fields, Joshua Kemppainen, Hendrik Heinz, Gregory M. Odegard
Michigan Tech Publications
Predicting the physical and mechanical properties of organic materials from purely chemical understandings remains a significant challenge due to the limitations of conventional force fields in molecular dynamics (MD). In this work, we present a novel reformulation of Class II force fields that integrates Morse bond potentials with newly derived cross-term interactions, explicitly capturing complete bond dissociation while maintaining computational efficiency. This reformulated functional form combines the stability of fixed-bond models with the reactive capabilities of bond-breaking force fields, achieving accurate and robust MD predictions across crystalline, semi-crystalline, and amorphous organic systems. Extensive benchmarking confirms its predictive accuracy and speed, …

Recognition Of Bangla And English Words In Bengali Texts Using A Modified Bert-Base-Ner Model, Md Parvez Hossain, Ohidujjaman Ohidujjaman, Mohammad Shorif Uddin, Mohammad Nurul Huda, Tetsuya Shimamura
Iraqi Journal for Computer Science and Mathematics
A fusion of Bangla and English words is frequently utilized, especially on social media. This phenomenon significantly hampers the learning and preservation of the Bengali language among future generations. This paper proposes a model to recognize Bangla and English words in Bengali texts. In addition, this study converts the detected English words into standard Bangla words. In this work, we redesign the BERT-base-NER model using the training input dataset. BERT is chosen for its strong contextual representation capabilities, which are well-suited to noisy and informal text. BERT-base-NER provides strong contextual embeddings but treats token labels independently, lacking explicit modeling of …

Advertising Constraint-Based Dynamic Generation Of Promotional Content User Interfaces., Lakshmi Kumar Dabbiru, Raghu Donamukkala
Defensive Publications Series
The use of static, pre-defined layouts for promotional content can limit adaptability to user requests for specific formats and may not maintain visual coherence with evolving page designs. This disclosure describes a system for the dynamic, advertising constraint-based generation of user interfaces for such content. The system can utilize a generative large language model to create front-end code for a promotional layout in real-time or near-real-time. The generation process can be guided by a consolidated set of constraints, such as formatting instructions parsed from a user's query, design system parameters from a surrounding page, and advertiser brand preferences. This approach …

Data-Centric Ai For Eeg-Based Emotion Recognition: Noise Filtering And Augmentation Strategies, Nadieh Moghadam, Rana Hegazy
School of Engineering: Faculty Scholarship
Research in the biomedical field often faces challenges due to the scarcity and high cost of data, which significantly limit the development and application of machine learning models. This paper introduces a data-centric AI framework for EEG-based emotion recognition that emphasizes improving data quality rather than model complexity. Instead of proposing a deep architecture, we demonstrate how participant-guided noise filtering combined with systematic data augmentation can substantially enhance system performance across multiple classification settings: binary (high vs. low arousal), four-quadrant emotions, and seven discrete emotions. Using the SEED-VII dataset, we show that these strategies consistently improve accuracy and F1 scores, …

A Usv Path Planning Algorithm Under Special Environment Based On Td3-Rrt, Jitong Chen, Jiajia Zhou, Di Wu, Hailong Jiang
Journal of System Simulation
Abstract: In view of USV path planning in special environments such as multiple obstacles, large-size obstacles, and narrow passages, the rapidly-exploring random tree (RRT) algorithm suffers from drawbacks such as a large sampling base, low success rate, and zigzagging planned path. To address these problems, a global path planning algorithm (TD3-RRT) was proposed based on the twin delayed deep deterministic policy gradient (TD3). The USV path search model was established by combining the RRT algorithm with deep reinforcement learning. Forward looking detection was used to sense the environment to adaptively adjust the step size. The path search direction was exported …

Path Planning For Mobile Robots Based On Improved Artificial Potential Field Algorithm, Chi Zhang, Wei Wei
Journal of System Simulation
Abstract: In view of the problems of unreachable target areas and easy local minima in traditional artificial potential field methods, an improved artificial potential field method was proposed. The improved algorithm optimized the repulsive field function by introducing obstacle angle factors and distance factors to control the repulsive force magnitude. At the same time, an additional repulsive force towards the target point was added to solve the problem of unreachable target areas in traditional algorithms. When the robot fell into a local minimum, by introducing turning towards obstacles and turning factors to accurately apply escape forces to the robot, the …

Sectoral Exposure To Heat: Heterogeneous Impacts Of Extreme Heat On Workplace Accidents In Italy, Giovanni Marin, Aung Tun Oo
Sectoral Exposure To Heat: Heterogeneous Impacts Of Extreme Heat On Workplace Accidents In Italy, Giovanni Marin, Aung Tun Oo
Fondazione Eni Enrico Mattei Working Papers
This study examines how extreme heat affects workplace accidents in Italy’s various economic sectors. Using granular data by sector, day, and province (NUTS-3) for 2018–2024, we evaluate the contribution of occupational exposure as a source of diverse effects at the sector level. Our findings imply that while the average effects of extreme heat on workplace accidents are, at best, negligible, high temperatures significantly raise the frequency of medium-to-low severity accidents for sectors with high levels of exposure, while exposure and extreme heat alone do not account for fatalities.
Adaptive Pi Control Using Recursive Least Squares For Centrifugal Pump Pipeline Systems, David A. Brattley, Wayne Weaver
Adaptive Pi Control Using Recursive Least Squares For Centrifugal Pump Pipeline Systems, David A. Brattley, Wayne Weaver
Michigan Tech Publications
Pipeline transportation of petroleum products remains one of the safest and most efficient methods of bulk energy delivery, yet overpressure events continue to pose serious operational and regulatory challenges. Traditional fixed-gain PI controllers, commonly used with centrifugal pump drives, cannot adapt to varying product densities or transient disturbances such as valve closures that generate water hammer. This paper proposes a self-tuning adaptive controller based on Recursive Least Squares (RLS) parameter estimation to improve safety and efficiency in pipeline pump operations. A nonlinear simulation model of a centrifugal pump driven by an induction motor is developed, incorporating pipeline friction losses via …

Interpersonal Violence Within Same-Sex Relationships: Survivors’ Perspectives Of Counselor Competency, Cheryl Ann D' La Rotta
Walden Dissertations and Doctoral Studies
Survivors of same-sex intimate partner violence (IPV) face negative mental health consequences. A lack of research exists on how social support, emotional and coping regulation, and counselors’ behaviors, knowledge, and skills affect the help-seeking behaviors and therapeutic outcomes of survivors of same-sex IPV. Addressing the gap is important because recent studies report an increase in same-sex IPV but low levels of help-seeking behaviors in response. If unaddressed, IPV can affect the well-being and safety of those partnered individuals. The purpose of this qualitative hermeneutic phenomenological study was to explore the experiences of same-sex IPV survivors who received therapeutic counseling. The …

Innovations in 3D tissue imaging have revolutionized research, but limitations stemming from lengthy protocols and equipment accessibility persist. Widefield microscopy is fast and accessible but often excluded from 3D imaging workflows due to its lack of optical sectioning. Here we combine tissue clearing with a commercial depth-variant deconvolution approach that we optimized for large-volume widefield imaging. By implementing prefiltering with z-brick splitting, we achieve subnuclear axial resolution in tissues to a depth of 500 µm in multi-tile scan images. We illustrate the utility of this method in a model of ileitis and to gain a 3D perspective in thick brain …

Developing Interventions To Improve Future Age And Situation Specific Mask Wearing, John Knight, Barbara R. Medvec, Patrick Hammett
Developing Interventions To Improve Future Age And Situation Specific Mask Wearing, John Knight, Barbara R. Medvec, Patrick Hammett
Biennial Convention (CONV)
Background: Outcomes from the COVID-19 pandemic indicate that masks lower a person’s exposure to respiratory infections. The Centers for Disease Control and Prevention (CDC) continues to recommend situation-specific mask-wearing to protect oneself from COVID-19 variants and other viruses. Yet, the clinical community continues to struggle with targeting interventions to increase the likelihood of mask-wearing when the risk of virus exposure is higher in the post-pandemic environment. In this study, we applied the Health Belief Model (HBM) to identify the attitudes and beliefs influencing mask-wearing and recommend targeted interventions for low-frequency mask wearers in CDC recommended situations.
Methods: We administered a …

Of Rollercoasters And Resilience: The Role Of Ceos’ Biases And Heuristics For Large Firms’ Technological Innovation, Cristina O. Vlas, Radu E. Vlas
International Journal of Applied Management and Technology
How do CEOs’ personality biases and motivational heuristics influence innovation in large firms? Because large-firm innovation is more common and less risky, overlooked factors—such as narcissism, self-monitoring, and promotion or prevention foci—become pivotal. Drawing on these traits, we found that narcissistic CEOs differ from self-monitoring CEOs in driving innovation. Moreover, the effect of self-monitoring CEOs depends on whether their regulatory focus is oriented toward promotion or prevention. However, this interplay between personality and motivation does not apply to narcissistic CEOs, suggesting that certain characteristics remain relatively fixed. These findings advance the understanding of how CEO traits shape large-firm innovation and …

Improvement Of Slam Localization Accuracy In Ar By Enhancing Yolov8, Jia Liu, Zengwei Zhang, Dapeng Chen, Nanxuan Huang, Bin Wang, Hong Song
Journal of System Simulation
Abstract: In the presence of dynamic interference in the environment, traditional simultaneous localization and mapping (SLAM) methods often experience reduced precision and stability in the registration of virtual objects during three-dimensional registration in augmented reality (AR). To address these issues, an improved method for dynamic scenes based on semantic segmentation and optical flow tracking was proposed. The convolutional block attention module (CBAM) attention mechanism was incorporated into YOLOv8 to enhance its focus on dynamic objects in the environment, thereby improving detection performance and accuracy. The semantic segmentation functionality of the improved YOLOv8 was integrated into the front-end of ORB-SLAM3 to …

Auv Path Planning Based On Behavior Cloning And Improved Dqn In Partially Unknown Environments, Lijing Xing, Min Li, Xiangguang Zeng, Ping Zhang, Bei Peng
Journal of System Simulation
Abstract: To address the problems of large randomness and slow convergence of the DQN dynamic path planning algorithm for a single autonomous underwater vehicle (AUV) in a partially unknown environment, a path planning method combining behavior cloning with A* algorithm and DQN (BA_DQN) was proposed. Based on the known environmental information, an improved A* algorithm incorporating ocean current resistance was proposed to guide DQN, thereby reducing the randomness of the DQN algorithm. By considering the complexity of the marine environment, the sampling probability was improved again after expanding the positive experience pool to enhance the training success rate. To address …

Attitude Control Of Quadrotor Uav Based On Disturbance Observer And Command Filtering, Boning Li, Ming Chen, Shuchang Qi, Haoran Meng, Lei Wang
Journal of System Simulation
Abstract: A finite-time fault-tolerant control scheme based on backstepping was proposed for the attitude tracking control problem of quadrotor UAVs. A finite-time neural network disturbance observer was designed, which could quickly compensate for the impacts of actuator failures and external disturbances, thereby enhancing the system's robustness. A first-order command filter and a compensation mechanism were introduced, which could avoid the computational complexity caused by differentiating the virtual control law and eliminate the influence of filtering errors. The hyperbolic tangent function was selected as the constraint function for the input torque, which restricted the input signal to prevent excessive magnitude …
