Tunable Phase-Change Metasurfaces Coupled With Mid-Infrared Molecular Vibrations, Haotian Tang, Liliana Stan, David A. Czaplewski, Xiaodong Yang, Jie Gao

Mechanical and Aerospace Engineering Faculty Research & Creative Works

Chiral optical meta surfaces have emerged as a promising platform in coupling with molecular vibrational fingerprints through the enhanced light-matter interaction under different circularly polarized light illumination. This work reports the mode coupling between the mid-infrared phonon vibrations of polymethyl methacrylate (PMMA) molecules, and the thermally tunable chiral meta surfaces based on the phase-change material Ge₂Sb₂Te₅ (GST-225). Phase-change chiral meta surfaces with high circular dichroism (CD) in absorption and tunable plasmonic resonance in the frequency range of 48-56 THz are demonstrated, which covers the phonon vibrational frequency of PMMA molecules at 52 THz. The mode splitting features are observed in …

Is Hockey Still Canada’S Game? How Usa Teams Have Won Every Stanley Cup Since 1994, Aaron Montgomery, Long Doan, Joe Demaio, Michael Frankel Dec 2025

Is Hockey Still Canada’S Game? How Usa Teams Have Won Every Stanley Cup Since 1994, Aaron Montgomery, Long Doan, Joe Demaio, Michael Frankel

Symposium of Student Scholars

The last Canadian team to win Lord Stanley’s cup in the National Hockey League was the Montreal Canadiens in 1993. Since then, each championship has been claimed by a team geographically located in the United States. Is this streak unusual? Perhaps it is particularly unusual in light of the fact that Hockey is known as Canada’s game. Is Hockey in its modern incarnation still Canada’s game? Given the long history of the NHL should we expect such a streak to occur at some point in time? Are we too fixated on the geographic location of the teams in question? Perhaps …

Structure As Civic Space: The Tabiat Pedestrian Bridge In Dialogue With Frei Otto And Shigeru Ban, Allison L. Ware, Ehsan Sheikholharam Ma

Symposium of Student Scholars

What if a bridge could be more than just a means of crossing from one point to another? What if it could become a place of gathering, reflection, and connection between people and their city? The Tabiat Pedestrian Bridge in Tehran, Iran, challenges conventional ideas of infrastructure by transforming a simple crossing into a dynamic public space that celebrates structure, culture, and community. Completed by Leila Araghian and Alireza Behzadi of Diba Tensile Architecture, the Tabiat Pedestrian Bridge received the Aga Khan Award for Architecture in 2016. The bridge represents a shift in how infrastructure can serve urban life, not …

Reinforcement Learning Driven Cost-Effectiveness Analysis Of Dental Caries Prevention Policies Under Uncertainty, Pritam Deb, Christina Scherrer Phd, Lin Li Phd Dec 2025

Reinforcement Learning Driven Cost-Effectiveness Analysis Of Dental Caries Prevention Policies Under Uncertainty, Pritam Deb, Christina Scherrer Phd, Lin Li Phd

Symposium of Student Scholars

Dental caries remains one of the most common chronic diseases in American children and young adults. Dental sealants can prevent up to 80% of cavities, yet there is little guidance on when to apply or reseal them. Existing economic evaluations typically compare static strategies or sweep through fixed predictive-model thresholds using finite-horizon markov models or discrete-event simulation, but they do not adapt large-scale data-driven decisions for finding high-risk individuals from a large population. We propose a two-stage framework that integrates machine-learning (ML) risk prediction, microsimulation, and model-based reinforcement learning (RL) to identify cost-effective, state-dependent sealant policies. In stage one, we …

Understanding Lyme Iaci: Implications For Camp Nurses, Mary Tobin Dec 2025

Understanding Lyme Iaci: Implications For Camp Nurses, Mary Tobin

CompassPoint

Lyme Infection-Associated Chronic Illness (Lyme IACI) is a term adopted by the U.S. National Academies of Sciences, Engineering, and Medicine (NASEM) to describe persistent, often debilitating symptoms that follow Lyme disease infection. Affecting an estimated 10–20% of individuals treated for Lyme disease, Lyme IACI includes fatigue, musculoskeletal pain, cognitive dysfunction, and sleep disturbances that can last months or even years despite standard antibiotic therapy (NASEM, 2025). Unlike acute Lyme disease, Lyme IACI is not well understood and lacks validated diagnostic tools or biomarkers, making it a challenge to diagnose or treat for clinicians and caregivers—especially those working with children in …

Prism (Proxy Recognition And Inclusion Scoring Method), Destiny Raburnel, Crystal Tubbs, Md Abdullah Al Hafiz Khan

Symposium of Student Scholars

AI-driven automated hiring tools are reshaping how companies find talent, but they often reproduce the hidden biases embedded in their training data. Our project, PRISM (Proxy Recognition and Inclusion Scoring Method), investigates how subtle demographic signals, specifically first names associated with gender and race, influence AI resume screening even when candidates have identical qualifications. We built a controlled dataset of resumes that are identical in every way except for the applicant's first name, with each resume using a racially neutral surname to isolate how first names alone affect scoring. We tested these resumes against job postings in technology, healthcare, and …

Advancing Radiation Shielding For Human Space Exploration, Bryan Trejo, Lea Scott, Eduardo Farfan Dec 2025

Advancing Radiation Shielding For Human Space Exploration, Bryan Trejo, Lea Scott, Eduardo Farfan

Symposium of Student Scholars

Beyond the safety of the Earth's magnetic field, out into the treacherous reaches of space, lies a harsh environment of radiation. This study examines radiation shielding strategies for crewed spacecraft operating in various environments, including Mars transit and deep space. Within these environments, ionizing radiation remains a critical challenge to long-duration, crewed space travel. Galactic Cosmic Rays (GCR), high-energy protons and heavy nuclei originating outside our solar system, as well as Solar Particle Events (SPE), highly energetic protons ejected continuously during the 11-year solar cycle, are all analyzed in their unique interactions with spacecraft material and biological tissues. Shielding to …

Rights Of Nature, Wrongs For The Commons: Risks Of Assigning Legal Personhood To The Rivers Of Washington State, Srinandan Ramachandran Dec 2025

Rights Of Nature, Wrongs For The Commons: Risks Of Assigning Legal Personhood To The Rivers Of Washington State, Srinandan Ramachandran

Washington Journal of Social & Environmental Justice

The Rights of Nature (“RoN”) movement, which seeks to grant legal personhood to natural entities, has recently gained traction in Washington State and globally. While intended to enhance environmental protection and Indigenous sovereignty, RoN burdens commons governance by expanding the right to exclude. This paper advances a critique of proposals to grant legal personhood to rivers in Washington State, highlighting conflicts with standing, liability, and the jurisprudential tenets of legal personhood. RoN undermines equitable usufructuary access to the commons, or lands and waters without exclusionary rights, thereby impeding marginalized peoples’ ability to utilize shared resources. Instead of assigning legal personhood …

Fast-Failover Ipv4 And Ipv6, N/A

Defensive Publications Series

The present disclosure is directed to a protocol-agnostic fast-failover mechanism for IPv4 and IPv6 networks designed to address the inherent lack of rapid reconvergence. The present disclosure may enhance network resilience by pre-calculating and pre-installing a backup, or backup route, into a router's forwarding information base (FIB) alongside a primary route. In the event of a primary route failure, a router can be configured to switch traffic to the backup route almost instantaneously, thereby bypassing the conventional, time-consuming process of route recalculation and installation. This approach can significantly minimize packet loss and service disruption.

Ai And A Possible Renaissance For Christian Higher Education, Derek Schuurman Dec 2025

Ai And A Possible Renaissance For Christian Higher Education, Derek Schuurman

University Faculty Publications and Creative Works

The early Greeks saw the essence of education as Paideia: the process of forming a whole person into an ideal citizen. They emphasized the formation of virtues like prudence, justice, fortitude, and temperance in preparation for active citizenship. In Plato’s Republic, we read that “The object of education is to teach us to love what is beautiful,” which involves the shaping of desire.1 For the Greeks, the purpose of education was training in virtue.

Heroes By The Score, Owen J. Eastman Dec 2025

Heroes By The Score, Owen J. Eastman

Honors Projects

Historians have increasingly examined how media other than yellow journalism helped manufacture consent for American imperialism during the Spanish-American War, yet commercial sheet music—despite its ubiquity at the time—remains overlooked. This study addresses that gap by analyzing fifty pieces of sheet music published around the period, employing a mixed-methods approach that combines quantitative, qualitative, and comparative media analysis. The corpus reveals four dominant themes: memorializing the sinking of the Maine; Cuban “liberation” rhetoric that often referenced American ownership or influence over the island; military hero worship that personalized and justified expansion; and messages of national unity that permitted overseas territorial …

Mobility-Restricting Covenants In Business Contracts: The Case Of Franchising, Francine Lafontaine, Lorenzo G. Luisetto, J. J. Prescott

Law & Economics Working Papers

Several studies show that restrictive covenants in employment contracts, such as noncompete agreements, may affect employees in detrimental ways, including by reducing mobility and suppressing wages. While such concerns are real, these clauses also have the potential to serve legitimate business purposes by helping companies protect valuable information, which can encourage investment and training and enhance social welfare. This paper explores the use of several types of covenants, including noncompetes but also confidentiality and post-relationship non-recruitment clauses, in franchise contracts, an important and accessible category of business contracts. Many of these contracts impose restrictive covenants on franchisees but also on …

Investigating The Molecular Mechanism Of Pbcv-1 Virus-Induced Lipid Production Enhancement For Renewable Energy, Yoonjung Choi, Amanda Michelle Lopez, Zhi Zhou, Paul B. Brown

Discovery Undergraduate Interdisciplinary Research Internship

Algal lipid production is a promising third-generation biofuel platform offering high photosynthetic efficiency and reduced competition with food crops or arable land. Microalgae primarily synthesize and accumulate lipids as triacylglycerol (TAG) via the Kennedy pathway, which involves key enzymes such as glycerol-3-phosphate dehydrogenase (GPDH), lysophosphatidic acid acyltransferase (LPAT), diacylglycerol acyltransferase (DGAT), and phospholipid-diacylglycerol acyltransferase (PDAT). However, large-scale lipid production and recovery remain major bottlenecks in algal biofuel development. The Chlorella-specific lytic virus PBCV-1 has been proposed as a low-energy alternative for lipid recovery through viral-induced cell lysis and has been associated with enhanced lipid yields. Yet, the molecular mechanism driving …
