Still A Deal With The Devil? Mary Carter Agreements And The Integrity Of Civil Jury Trials, Lane Hammond Dec 2025

Still A Deal With The Devil? Mary Carter Agreements And The Integrity Of Civil Jury Trials, Lane Hammond

Mercer Law Review

This Comment examines how jurisdictions treat Mary Carter agreements today and why Georgia should prohibit them entirely. It explores a case currently on appeal before the Court of Appeals of Georgia that raises the issue, draws parallels to prohibited trial tactics under the Bruton Doctrine, and explains why limiting instructions fail to cure the prejudice these agreements create. It raises questions about whether Mary Carter agreements even present a justiciable controversy. It also considers the tension between the competing values at stake: promoting settlements and judicial efficiency on one side, versus safeguarding fairness and the integrity of litigation on the …

Creating A Radical Social Change Campaign To Restore Rational Thinking: A Theoretical Framework, John S. Long Dec 2025

Creating A Radical Social Change Campaign To Restore Rational Thinking: A Theoretical Framework, John S. Long

Student Theses and Dissertations

Rational thinking is a skill and mindset that is under siege in modern society, becoming increasingly endangered as we devolve into increasingly hyper-partisan communities rife with echo chambers and confirmation biases. The most basic processes of analyzing issues and facts to develop clearly thought-out and defendable positions have been abandoned in favor of a zealous devotion to toe the party line, no matter the evidence or implications. What we are witnessing firsthand is the fast-approaching culmination of the post-truth era.

One might assume that an issue with such far-reaching implications across our entire society would generate a significant amount of …

A Fish & A Bird, Deanna Moorehead Dec 2025

A Fish & A Bird, Deanna Moorehead

Theses

As a curtain of trees opens and dawn breaks over the glistening waters of Lake Ontario, a fish and a bird spot each other through the surface and fall madly in love. They dance and sing together from their respective atmospheres, yet each time the bird soars past the water's edge and onto the beach, the fish cannot follow. Night after night, by the light of the moon, the fish trains herself to leap out of the water, hoping to breach high enough to join her beau above. Late one afternoon, the fish approaches the shore, where the bird stands …

We generated a highly contiguous, annotated genome of the Jamaican fruit bat, Artibeus jamaicensis, including annotated germline immunoglobulin heavy-chain (IGH) and light-chain lambda (IGL) loci to understand bat B cell receptor repertoires. The bat germline shares many structures and features described in human immunoglobulin loci. However, some features are unique to A. jamaicensis, including an expansion of cysteine-rich IGHV genes. To investigate the relationship between the germline IGH locus and expressed B cell receptors (BCRs), we sequenced the BCRs of wild-caught and captive A. jamaicensis, finding an enrichment of IGHV3 and IGHV4 genes. Compared to humans, A. jamaicensis had shorter …

The Nursing Human Capital Value Model, Olga Yakusheva, Kathryn A. Lee, Marianne Weiss Dec 2025

The Nursing Human Capital Value Model, Olga Yakusheva, Kathryn A. Lee, Marianne Weiss

Individual Articles

Nursing's economic value is presently framed within the dominant “outcomes-over-cost” value framework. Within this context, organizations employing nurses often use nursing budget reductions as a cost-minimization strategy, with the intent of retaining high quality outcomes. However, persistent issues such as nurse understaffing, burnout, and turnover threaten healthcare systems' capacity to deliver the quality, equitable, affordable patient care that the public requires. In this paper, we propose a new conceptual model and definition of nursing's economic value. The model development is guided by the convergence of three classic economic frameworks:human capital theory, production theory, and value theory. Grounded in these theories, …

Stem And Pdf Simulation Of Crystalline And Amorphous Materials, Yang Yang, Francisco Lagunas Vargas

Mechanical Engineering and Materials Science Independent Study

The aberration corrected scanning transmission electron microscope (STEM) is a powerful tool for nanoscale characterization, as it is capable of imaging structures with sub-angstrom resolution. An optical microscope uses visible light to magnify objects, which is limited to ~1000X due to the limited resolving power of light. Here, we applied STEM simulations via PRISMATIC and PY4DSTEM, in order to compute images of crystals, 2D materials, and metallic glasses. Practically, computational simulations are important due to the operating cost of STEM and time required to be trained on the equipment. More importantly, simulations provide a direct comparison between theory and experimental …

Mechanical Engineering and Materials Science Independent Study

Oxide thin film transistors (TFTs) have gained popularity as a replacement silicon based TFTs, with indium gallium zinc oxide (IGZO) being the leading candidate. A solution-based fabrication method has been studied to replace the current fabrication method using radio frequency or direct current sputtering. However, the solution based fabrication method has shown to have low reliability in producing high quality IGZO films. Thus, the fabrication parameters to produce high quality IGZO films were studied. It was found that an IGZO solution with a 0.5M concentration of 2-methoxyethanol annealed at 300°C for 30 minutes with a prebake at 70°C for 10 …

Turkish Journal of Physics

Nowadays, with the miniaturization of nanoindustry, we are increasingly interested in doping effects for nanotube systems. In this study, based on density functional theory (DFT) and local spin density approximation (LDA) methods within Hubbard U corrections, the electronic, magnetic and electrical properties of single-wall silicon carbide nanotubes doped with vanadium were theoretically studied. Although the undoped SiC system is nonmagnetic, the V-doped SiC nanotube induces magnetism and the total magnetic moment of this magnetic material is equal to ~1 µB. Density of states calculations indicated that the magnetization of SiC:V single-wall nanotubes mainly comes from the 2p orbitals of carbon …

Self-Assembling Rna Nanostructures Are Highly Sensitive To Environmental Conditions, Jordan Aposhian, Surya Pratap S. Deopa, Scott Horowitz, Joseph D. Yesselman

Chemistry and Biochemistry: Faculty Scholarship

Recent developments in RNA nanotechnology have led to an increase in the design of specific, higher-order RNA structures, which will ultimately be used in drug delivery and immunomodulation applications. As researchers create RNA nanostructures with the intention of making them a standard tool in molecular biologists' toolkits, further investigation is required into the robustness of RNA designs. Primarily, in what different molecular contexts are the designed and intended nanostructures stable? In this work, we show that RNA nanostructure self-assembly is highly sensitive to environmental conditions by using second-order right-angle light scattering. While a test RNA hexagonal grid nanostructure forms correctly …

Playing By Feel: Gender, Emotion, And Social Norms In Overwatch Role Choice, Cristo Leon, Angela Arroyo, James Lipuma Dec 2025

Playing By Feel: Gender, Emotion, And Social Norms In Overwatch Role Choice, Cristo Leon, Angela Arroyo, James Lipuma

STEM for Success Resources

This paper explores how emotion, gameplay context, and social norms shape role choice in both digital and institutional systems. Using Overwatch as a case study, it examines gendered experiences of physiological excitement and decision-making during play. Women often describe heightened emotional engagement where victory represents both personal achievement and resistance to cultural expectations. Such emotions influence situational choices, including whether to play as a Tank, DPS, or Support, and which hero to select based on perceived risk or visibility. Drawing on feminist game studies and transdisciplinary communication, the authors argue that role preference is determined not only by game mechanics …

Neurons in the human and animal brain have been known to …

Scout 07, Austin Roberts Dec 2025

Scout 07, Austin Roberts

Theses

Throughout my tenure at RIT, I have produced multiple short films, undertaken gaming co-ops, and pursued an independent study centered on gaming assets to expand my technical and creative skills. For my thesis film, I sought to merge these experiences by concentrating on environmental storytelling—a deliberate challenge, given faculty concerns that narratives lacking strong character focus may struggle to engage audiences emotionally. With these considerations in mind, I crafted a film featuring a secondary character within a rich environment, designed to immerse viewers and provoke curiosity about the story’s temporal and spatial context.
