Traffic safety and mobility remain critical challenges for modern transportation systems. The emergence of connected vehicle (CV) data offers unprecedented opportunities to capture microscopic, non-aggregated driving dynamics to support precise and finer-grained traffic safety and mobility research. This dissertation develops a comprehensive CV data–driven analytical framework to advance traffic safety and mobility research across multiple roadway contexts, including intersections, segments, freeways, and urban arterial networks. For traffic safety, this research extracts both longitudinal and lateral risky driving behaviors from CV trajectories and integrates them with macro-level roadway, traffic, and visual environment features. A spatial machine learning framework is proposed for …

Benchmarking And Advancing Heterogeneous Data Reasoning With Large Language Models, Yebowen Hu Jan 2026

Benchmarking And Advancing Heterogeneous Data Reasoning With Large Language Models, Yebowen Hu

Graduate Studies Theses and Dissertations 2026

Large language models (LLMs) increasingly face complex real-world tasks requiring complex reasoning over heterogeneous inputs, including text, numbers, and structured data. This dissertation first investigates the capability boundaries of LLMs under such scenarios. Through the MeetingBank and SportsMetrics benchmarks, we show that while LLMs exhibit linguistic fluency, they struggle with factual accuracy, information density, and quantitative cross-referencing in meeting summarization and sports analysis. Using DecipherPref, a pair-wise evaluation framework grounded in the Bradley-Terry-Luce model, we further probe LLMs' inherent preferences for information-rich and lengthy inputs, and we identify critical deficiencies in financial decision-making through DeFine, where models lack precise insight …

Computational Methods For Rna 3d Structure Classification And Structural Motif Discovery, Nabila Shahnaz Khan Jan 2026

Computational Methods For Rna 3d Structure Classification And Structural Motif Discovery, Nabila Shahnaz Khan

Graduate Studies Theses and Dissertations 2026

Non-coding RNAs perform diverse and essential cellular functions, and the study of RNA structures is expanding rapidly. The growing volume of RNA 3D structures highlights the need for efficient computational methods to identify recurring structural motifs, which are often conserved and critical to RNA function. However, the complexity and redundancy of RNA structures in existing databases pose significant challenges for motif discovery and structural analysis. To address these challenges, this dissertation presents three complementary computational approaches. First, a non-redundant RNA structural dataset, RNA-NRD, was developed to systematically reduce redundancy in RNA structural data and provide a reliable foundation for downstream …

Early-Time/High-Frequency Electromagnetic Induction Sensing For Minimal-Metal And None-Metallic Subsurface Targets, Michele Louise Maxson Jan 2026

Early-Time/High-Frequency Electromagnetic Induction Sensing For Minimal-Metal And None-Metallic Subsurface Targets, Michele Louise Maxson

Dartmouth College Ph.D Dissertations

Conventional electromagnetic induction (EMI) systems operate within the quasi-static regime, where measurements are dominated by conduction currents and are primarily sensitive to highly conductive targets and bulk soil properties. As a result, these systems exhibit limited sensitivity to low-conductivity and layered media, such as permafrost, composite materials, and minimum-metal landmines, where diagnostically relevant information resides in early-time/high-frequency electromagnetic responses, generally above 100 kHz. This limitation reflects a mismatch between conventional EMI system design and the underlying target physics, restricting the ability of standard EMI approaches to resolve fine-scale non-metallic subsurface structure.

In this thesis, I investigate early-time/high-frequency sensitivity as a …

Deep Learning Assisted Time-Resolved Optical Imaging For Surgical Guidance And Radiotherapy, Shiru Wang Jan 2026

Deep Learning Assisted Time-Resolved Optical Imaging For Surgical Guidance And Radiotherapy, Shiru Wang

Dartmouth College Ph.D Dissertations

Image-guided therapy enables clinicians to monitor treatment progress, verify accurate delivery, and make immediate adjustments. Among various imaging modalities available for this purpose, optical imaging techniques offer distinct advantages for real-time guidance through their non-ionizing nature and high temporal resolution. However, light propagation in biological tissue fundamentally limits these imaging modalities by obscuring spatial information and introducing noise artifacts. These physical constraints make it hard to accurately interpret subsurface structures and compromise the reliability of real-time guidance.

This thesis develops deep learning methods to overcome these limitations in two distinct optical imaging modalities. The first approach aims to improve time-of-flight …

Ice Stream Formation, Activation, And Evolution, Logan E. Mann Jan 2026

Ice Stream Formation, Activation, And Evolution, Logan E. Mann

Dartmouth College Ph.D Dissertations

While the Greenland and Antarctic ice sheets deform as slow viscous fluids, ice streams are regions of ice that flow several orders of magnitude faster than the surrounding ice ridges. Ice streams form the primary drainage networks for ice sheets and are currently responsible for the majority of discharge from the West Antarctic Ice Sheet. Many catchments like the Siple Coast of West Antarctica display a complex array of flow morphologies that are not primarily determined by bed topography. Instead, flow is primarily governed by thermal conditions along the bed and in shear margins that lead to rapid till deformation. …

Generative Ai And The Purpose Of Legal Scholarship, Michael L. Smith Jan 2026

Generative Ai And The Purpose Of Legal Scholarship, Michael L. Smith

Faculty Articles

What does generative artificial intelligence mean for the future of legal scholarship? The topic has been the talk of the town around academic watercoolers. Some legal scholars have tried their hand at producing legal scholarship using generative Al. The accompanying commentary is varied, but advocates for the technology suggest that generative Al may become a common tool for legal scholars, leaving those who refuse to adapt at a severe disadvantage.

In this article, I contemplate a world in which legal scholars routinely use generative Al to produce academic writing. I argue that an instrumental view of legal scholarship's value-a view …

Time Series Decomposition And Forecasting Of Alzheimer’S Disease Mortality Using A Kolmogorov-Zurbenko Filter, Jack D. Farrell

Electronic Theses & Dissertations (2024 - present)

Alzheimer’s disease mortality has substantially risen in recent history, placing a significant burden on public health infrastructure and highlighting the need for improved analytical methods to better understand mortality data patterns and offer reliable predictions. Time series methods often struggle to balance both accuracy and interpretability, which hinders the ability to gather meaningful insights from time series data. To address these limitations, this study applies the Kolmogorov-Zurbenko (KZ) filter to monthly U.S. Alzheimer’s mortality data spanning from 1999 to 2023 and decomposes the series into long-term trend, seasonal, and noise components on a logarithmic scale. Long-term trend accounts for 86.49% …

Studies Towards Chemical Synthesis Of Homogeneous Prion Glycoprotein, Baotong Tian Jan 2026

Studies Towards Chemical Synthesis Of Homogeneous Prion Glycoprotein, Baotong Tian

Electronic Theses & Dissertations (2024 - present)

Prion diseases are fatal neurodegenerative disorders initiated by conformational misfolding of the prion protein (PrP), which generates pathogenic conformers that propagate via templated conversion and accumulate as aggregates. Glycosylation can modulate the PrP folding energy landscape, thereby biasing folding trajectories and the distribution of resulting conformational states. Bank vole PrP contains two N-linked glycosylation sites, and disentangling the contributions of site occupancy versus glycan structure requires homogeneous, site-defined glycoforms. In contrast, biosynthetic expression typically produces heterogeneous glycoform ensembles due to multistep Golgi processing, precluding independent control of glycan identity at each site. Here we report a chemical synthesis strategy of …

Learning - Augmented Stochastic Model Predictive Control For Adaptive Battery Energy Storage Operation Under Net Load Uncertainty, Muhammad Amad Asif Jan 2026

Learning - Augmented Stochastic Model Predictive Control For Adaptive Battery Energy Storage Operation Under Net Load Uncertainty, Muhammad Amad Asif

Electronic Theses & Dissertations (2024 - present)

Battery energy storage systems play a critical role in enabling reliable operation of power systems with high penetration of renewable energy. However, optimal control of BESS is challenging due to uncertainty in net load and electricity prices. Deterministic MPC, which relies on point forecasts, can perform suboptimally under forecast errors. SMPC addresses this limitation by incorporating uncertainty through scenario-based optimization. Nevertheless, its performance depends on fixed objective parameters, particularly the cycling penalty, which governs the trade-off between economic cost and battery utilization. This thesis develops a learning-augmented SMPC framework for battery control under net load uncertainty. The proposed approach integrates …

Regulation Of Private Higher Education In Mexico: How Non-Elite Institutions Navigate Authorization, Edson Eduardo Navarro Meza Jan 2026

Regulation Of Private Higher Education In Mexico: How Non-Elite Institutions Navigate Authorization, Edson Eduardo Navarro Meza

Electronic Theses & Dissertations (2024 - present)

Low quality, excessive commercialization, fraud, profit in disguise, and predatory dynamics remain the most pressing regulatory challenges in the context of private higher education in Mexico. These problems have been largely attributed to the ineffectiveness of authorization mechanisms, which have repeatedly become the focus of controversy and criticism from social, academic, and media sectors regarding their role in shaping the development of the sector. Some observers blame the government for its inaction in the face of rapid institutional proliferation, as well as for maintaining authorization procedures that have proven to be ineffective gatekeepers of sectoral expansion. Others place responsibility on …

From It-Girls To Obscurity: What Happened To The Stettheimer Sisters?, Catherine Pierce Higgins

MA Theses

This dissertation explores the lives and impact of the three Stettheimer sisters, Florine, Carrie and Ettie, cultural innovators, and major influencers of a distinctive, feministic strand of American modernism in New York between 1914 and 1950. The Stettheimer sisters did not use their privilege to assimilate into society but to create an alternate artistic universe, resisting the male hierarchies of the dominant avant-garde. By controlling a salon, an intellectual and creative social center where artists, writers, and intellectuals such as Marcel Duchamp, Georgia O’Keeffe and Carl Van Vechten held court, they were able to create an environment in which femininity, …

Brokering Safety, Chinmayi Sharma, Thomas E. Kadri, Sam Adler Jan 2026

Brokering Safety, Chinmayi Sharma, Thomas E. Kadri, Sam Adler

Faculty Scholarship

For victims of abuse, safety means hiding. Not just hiding themselves, but also their contact details, their address, their workplace, their roommates, and any other information that could enable their abuser to target them. Yet today, no number of name changes and relocations can prevent data brokers from sharing a victim’s personal information online. Thanks to brokers, abusers can find what they need with a single search, a few clicks, and a few dollars. For many victims, then, the best hope for safety lies in obscurity—that is, making themselves and their information harder to find.

This Article exposes privacy law’s …

The Black Hole Of Capital Gains: Etf Swap Funds, Jeffrey M. Colon Jan 2026

The Black Hole Of Capital Gains: Etf Swap Funds, Jeffrey M. Colon

Faculty Scholarship

ETFs have begun to challenge mutual funds as the dominant U.S. public pooled asset vehicle.  Their constant liquidity, exposure to an ever widening range of investment strategies, and highly touted tax efficiency have driven the explosive growth in the assets under management of ETFs over the last 15 years.  The tax efficiency is due to section 852(b)(6), which permits ETFs to distribute appreciated property tax free and eliminate all fund-level taxable gains even while making portfolio adjustments, which mutual funds cannot do.

Fund sponsors have developed various strategies to exploit the benefits of section 852(b)(6), with the newest being the …

Non-Invasive Digital Restoration Of Damaged Photographic Film Negatives, Ankan Bhattacharyya Jan 2026

Non-Invasive Digital Restoration Of Damaged Photographic Film Negatives, Ankan Bhattacharyya

University of Kentucky Doctoral Dissertations

Physical restoration of damaged photographic film causes more damage. Also, existing non-invasive digital restoration of film negatives does not produce print-quality optical images. Instead, they produce X-ray projections, which are not the same as optical projections. This thesis addresses these problems and establishes a framework that can digitally restore old, damaged films without the need to open them physically. Virtual Unwrapping is an existing pipeline that has proven itself over the last couple of decades to work on unopenable papyrus scrolls, like the Herculaneum Scrolls. This thesis utilizes the concept of virtual unwrapping to restore damaged photographic film negatives. Due …

Engineering Plga Nanoparticle Size To Modulate Immune Responses After Spinal Cord Injury, Daniel J. Kolpek Jan 2026

Engineering Plga Nanoparticle Size To Modulate Immune Responses After Spinal Cord Injury, Daniel J. Kolpek

University of Kentucky Doctoral Dissertations

Spinal cord injury is a severe and debilitating condition that often results in lifelong complications, including paralysis. Many of these chronic outcomes are driven by a sustained inflammatory response at the injury site, which limits tissue regeneration and functional recovery. As a result, therapeutic strategies that modulate this immune response have gained significant interest. Polymer based nanoparticle therapies have emerged as a promising approach due to their ability to interact with and influence immune cell behavior. Importantly, the physicochemical properties of nanoparticles can be precisely tuned to optimize these effects. Among these properties, size has been shown to influence key …

Holding The Line On Academic Freedom In Law School Clinics, Ty Alper, Praveen Kosuri, Beth Lyon, Alicia E. Plerhoples, Laura Riley, Robin Walker Sterling Jan 2026

Holding The Line On Academic Freedom In Law School Clinics, Ty Alper, Praveen Kosuri, Beth Lyon, Alicia E. Plerhoples, Laura Riley, Robin Walker Sterling

Georgetown Law Faculty Publications and Other Works

Since the emergence of modern clinical legal education, law school clinics have periodically faced political interference in their selection of clients and cases, interference that threatens clinics’ essential dual missions of training practice-ready lawyers and providing legal services to marginalized clients who would otherwise lack representation. While such pressure is not new, contemporary threats differ in scale and institutional form. Today, funding, oversight, and enforcement mechanisms are weaponized in an attempt to discipline universities, heightening institutional anxiety and prompting some universities to contemplate preemptive constraints on clinic autonomy in the name of risk management and reputational protection. This shift to …

Semantic Discovery Of Genomic Datasets With Ai, Lawrence Allibah Jan 2026

Semantic Discovery Of Genomic Datasets With Ai, Lawrence Allibah

Electronic Theses and Dissertations

Traditional keyword-based search in genomic databases often fails to capture the latent semantic context of biological studies, leading to a ``Lexical Gap" in research discovery. This thesis presents a high-performance dual-engine discovery system built upon 10,000 studies. By utilizing 1,536-dimensional vector embeddings, with large language models (LLMs) we implement a search engine coupled with a novel Hybrid Boosting layer that integrates semantic intent with factual metadata. Furthermore, we apply a high-dimensional K-Means clustering algorithm for unsupervised topic discovery. Empirical benchmarking demonstrates that the Hybrid Boosting engine achieves a 38.1% gain in precision and a 41.2% increase in Mean Reciprocal Rank …

Research Outputs: 2025-Present

Handwritten Urdu text recognition remains a very challenging problem due to the cursive and complex nature of the Nastaliq script. Each writer has a unique style, and there is a severe lack of large, well-labeled datasets. These challenges make Urdu text recognition much harder than for many other languages. Here we propose a novel and effective approach for handwritten Urdu word recognition that addresses both data scarcity and feature complexity. We utilized conditional diffusion models to generate synthetic handwritten Urdu word images. These models produce realistic word samples covering a wide range of variations, such as stroke thickness, curves, and …
