Tomo-Piv Study Of Baseline Flow Structures Behind A Strut Injector, Josiah Mcdermott, Connor Bell, Davide Viganò
Mechanical and Aerospace Engineering Faculty Research & Creative Works
Stabilizing combustion in scramjet engines is a formidable challenge due to the small-time scales afforded for air-fuel mixing. Numerous studies in this area have demonstrated the potential of strut-style platforms for fuel injection and mixing enhancement, which remains an active area of research. In the Aerodynamics Research Laboratory at Missouri S&T, a strut-style injector system has recently been installed. In this study, we characterize the baseline flow structures behind this platform absent fuel injection. The wake generated by a strut itself has an appreciable impact on the resulting air-fuel mixing, which motivates its characterization. In future studies, this characterization will …

Electric vertical takeoff and landing (eVTOL) aircraft is attracting great interest as a viable solution to promote urban aerial mobility with promising flexibility as well as emission reductions. However, the low specific energy of the current battery is still a strong constraint on the range and endurance of eVTOL flights, especially considering the significant power demands during the takeoff process. Engineering design optimization permits promising solutions for the minimum takeoff energy consumption but can be computationally intensive due to iteratively evaluating simulation models. Surrogate-based design optimization is efficient but still relies on optimization iterations which prohibit real-time decision-making. To fill …

Solid-state electrolytes promise safer, high-energy batteries, yet ionic transport is limited by structural heterogeneity and interfacial resistance. We combine hydrothermal synthesis and molecular dynamics (MD) to determine how dispersed crystallinity and interfacial orientation govern lithium-ion conduction in barium-doped anti-perovskite Li2.99Ba0.005OCl. Structural and thermal analyses identify a largely amorphous matrix with embedded nano crystallites, and MD captures the same short-range order and dispersion seen experimentally. Electrochemical impedance spectroscopy separates high amorphous-phase conductivity from a pellet-scale response dominated by interfacial limitations, consistent with direct-current polarization. Cyclic voltammetry indicates a broad electrochemical stability window. We quantify transport in crystalline …

This study investigates the effect of vibration-induced loose connections on signal reflection (S11) for loose connection identification in aerospace coaxial cables using distributed sensing approach, which is effective in filtering the noise and identifying minor discontinuities. In this approach, a sliding gated window is applied to S11 signal, a fast Fourier transform is performed over the gated windows, cross-correlation is computed between the baseline and vibration-affected signals, and the standard deviation is mapped along the cable length. Sinewave signals from 9 kHz to 5 GHz were swept through cables with vibrating connectors under three conditions: fully tightened, loosened by 180°, …

Laser powder bed fusion (LPBF) is a metal additive manufacturing process in which a concentrated laser beam selectively melts successive powder layers to fabricate components. Final part quality is highly sensitive to process parameters such as hatch spacing, powder bed density, laser power, and scanning speed. In this study, a computational fluid dynamics model employing discrete element method has been developed in FLOW-3D to simulate LPBF of Inconel 718. The modeled powder bed incorporates particle size distribution data obtained from scanning electron microscopy and is evaluated for single-layer, single-track deposition over a circular cavity. The model captured melt pool dynamics …

Atomized Oxidative Polymerization As A 3d Printing Platform For Binder-Free, Bulk Conductive Polymer Architectures, Tazdik Patwary Plateau, Hiep Pham, Jonghyun Park
Mechanical and Aerospace Engineering Faculty Research & Creative Works
Translating the ultrahigh intrinsic conductivity of conjugated polymers into bulk 3D architectures remains a formidable challenge due to the fundamental dichotomy between rheological printability and electronic purity. Existing strategies necessitate a compromise: solution-processing requires insulating binders that degrade charge transport, while binder-free vapor-phase polymerization (VPP) is kinetically confined to surface-limited thin films by diffusion constraints. Here, we introduce atomized oxidative polymerization (AOP), a manufacturing paradigm that overcomes these kinetic barriers via active, layer-by-layer monomer atomization. This approach ensures stoichiometric reaction conditions throughout the printed volume, driving a structural transition toward highly conductive quinoid-dominant chains with enhanced π-π stacking. The resulting …

Microwave curing is a fast, energy-efficient, and a viable alternative to conventional thermal curing processes. It has been widely adopted for processing carbon fiber-reinforced polymer composites because the high electrical conductivity of carbon fibers enables strong microwave coupling. In this study, IM7/Cycom 5320-1 unidirectional prepreg has been used to fabricate 64-layer laminated composites. Symmetric cross-ply ([0°/90°]16S) and a quasi-isotropic ([45°/90°/−45°/0°]8S) layup have been investigated. A custom-built six-magnetron microwave applicator and an autoclave were employed to manufacture the composite panels. Degree of cure of the manufactured laminates was evaluated via differential scanning calorimetry. Interfacial bonding and porosity of the microwave-cured laminates …

Thermal Protection Systems (TPS) are critical for atmospheric re-entry and hypersonic flight vehicles, yet ground-based evaluation of TPS materials remains challenging due to the cost, complexity, and limited availability of large arc-jet and inductively coupled plasma (ICP) facilities. Oxy-acetylene testing provides a low-cost and accessible alternative for preliminary material screening, sensor development, and fundamental studies of material response under high heat-flux conditions. This paper presents the design, construction, and initial validation of the High-Enthalpy Acetylene Testing (HEAT) facility at Missouri University of Science and Technology. The facility incorporates a modular experimental architecture, independently controlled oxygen and acetylene mass-flow systems, and …

2-Point Focused Laser Differential Interferometry Measurements Of A Parallel Jet In Supersonic Flow, Joshua Gary, Joseph Villarreal, Davide Vigano
Mechanical and Aerospace Engineering Faculty Research & Creative Works
Turbulence in compressible flows plays a central role in applications such as air-fuel mixing in supersonic combustors and is significantly more complex than incompressible turbulence due to the presence of fluctuating thermodynamic quantities. As such, models like the Strong Reynolds Analogy (SRA) are used to relate these quantities. However, SRA validity has been examined primarily in boundary-layer flows. In this work, a newly developed Two-Point Focused Laser Differential Interferometry (2-FLDI) system is implemented in a two-dimensional parallel supersonic jet. The diagnostic is described in detail, including optical alignment procedures, calibration methods, and data analysis techniques. Measurements acquired at multiple streamwise …

Robust Broadband Characterization Of Flexible Absorbers, Sheet Material, And Liquids Using A Coaxial Structure, Joseph Christopher Stecher
Robust Broadband Characterization Of Flexible Absorbers, Sheet Material, And Liquids Using A Coaxial Structure, Joseph Christopher Stecher
Masters Theses
Modern high-frequency measurement systems require reliable calibration and sample positioning to ensure measurement fidelity. This thesis presents three studies addressing practical limitations in broadband material parameter extraction and instrumentation.
The first study introduces a modified Nicolson–Ross–Weir (NRW) technique for flexible, compression-sensitive materials from 100 MHz to 18 GHz. Rigid 3D-printed spacers ensure precise sample positioning, and a T-matrix–based de-embedding procedure removes spacer effects. Validation using microstrip measurements and full-wave simulation confirms accurate permittivity extraction across compression levels.
The second study extends NRW to sheet materials enabling accurate material characterization. Independent validation using toroidal inductors with leakage correction and parallel-plate capacitors …
Empirical-Based Model Of Spatio-Temporal Errors, Godwin Naaba Ndaa
Empirical-Based Model Of Spatio-Temporal Errors, Godwin Naaba Ndaa
Masters Theses
This research develops an empirical model to characterize spatial-temporal InSAR errors and improve the accuracy of deformation time-series analysis. Using standardized Sentinel-1 HyP3 products and MintPy, the study quantifies how correlated noise affects velocity precision and validates the results against continuous GNSS velocities.
Residual velocities are near-Gaussian, with σ ~0.92–2.04 cm/yr and ~1 cm/yr on average. Variograms show power-law spatial structure with a non-zero nugget implicating troposphere and decorrelation while errors drop exponentially with more acquisitions; spatial uncertainty is strongly affected by unwrapping errors, coherence, and tropospheric noise, not simply troposphere.

Assessment Of Simulation Software Used For Cubesat Gnc Verification And Validation By University Research Teams, Alexander Taiyo Newett
Masters Theses
As the growth in university satellite teams continues, along with the greater trend in the small satellite market, the need for a guidance, navigation, and control verification and validation pipeline suitable for these young and inexperienced teams becomes evident. Much of the mathematical theory and software implementation of GNC concepts are large hurdles for teams largely composed of undergraduate students.
Many software packages exist that can help these teams achieve GNC verification and validation. If the learning curves of these software packages can be overcome, new satellite teams have the opportunity to better build and test GNC algorithms that are …
Assessment And Comparison Of Selected Carbon Ablation Models In Hypersonic Free-Flight And Arc-Jet Conditions, Andrew Steven Heider
Assessment And Comparison Of Selected Carbon Ablation Models In Hypersonic Free-Flight And Arc-Jet Conditions, Andrew Steven Heider
Masters Theses
Accurate prediction of ablative thermal protection system (TPS) performance is critical for hypersonic vehicle design. However, numerical prediction of ablation remains challenging because results are influenced by complex physics and the choice of surface chemistry model and assumptions made in material response calculations. The objective of this work is to evaluate several carbon ablation models and their implementation within modern computational fluid dynamics (CFD) codes. Numerical simulations were performed using NASA’s LAURA flow solver and the commercial CFD code ANSYS Fluent, which coupled Navier-Stokes with surface chemistry models describing carbon oxidation, nitridation, and sublimation reactions. Several reaction sets were considered, …
Public Preferences And Trade-Offs In Critical Mineral Mining Development In The United States, Bamidele Joseph Ajiga
Public Preferences And Trade-Offs In Critical Mineral Mining Development In The United States, Bamidele Joseph Ajiga
Masters Theses
Rising demand for battery-critical minerals has increased U.S. mining efforts, but projects often face public opposition. There is limited work on how individuals in affected regions evaluate trade-offs between economic and environmental risks.
This research applies a discrete choice experiment to examine individual preferences for proposed battery-critical minerals mining projects in Missouri, Minnesota, and Idaho. 1908 respondents evaluated hypothetical mining projects defined by jobs, state tax revenue, the proportion of tailings reprocessed, groundwater impacts, and surface water impacts, under gold and silver versus battery-critical mineral framings.
Conditional and mixed logit models were used to assess the importance of attributes, demographic …

Calcium Based Carbon Negative Fillers And Additives: Effects On Hydration And Performance Of Low-Carbon Cement Systems, Smita Bhowmick Shithi
Masters Theses
Cement production is a major source of global CO₂ emissions creating an urgent need for carbon-negative fillers and functional additives that lower clinker use while maintaining cement performance. This thesis investigates the effects of organic mineral salts as fillers and additives on cement hydration, fresh properties, compressive strength and pore structure. In the first study, ordinary Portland cement (OPC) was partially replaced with calcium carbonate or calcium oxalate to enable a direct comparison under controlled particle size distribution (PSD). Rheology, flowability, hydration kinetics, phase evolution, mechanical performance and water absorption were evaluated. Calcium carbonate promoted early hydration through nucleation and …

Post-Release Mortality Of European Bass (Dicentrarchus Labrax) Discarded From Small-Scale Estuarine Fishing, J. E. Stewart, T. Stamp, P. Davies, A. Hall, T. Robbins, L. Stewart, E. V. Sheehan
School of Biological and Marine Sciences
Estuaries provide essential habitats for many fish species, but their confined and accessible nature may increase fish vulnerability to capture, and few empirical studies have quantified the value of restricting net fisheries in such areas. Furthermore, management measures for some fisheries promote discarding (e.g., of European sea bass; Dicentrarchus labrax), yet the mortality of fish discarded from small-scale inshore fisheries is poorly understood. We used condition assessments, Reflex Action Mortality Predictor scores and acoustic tracking to evaluate post-release mortality of bass captured in small-scale estuarine netting and angling. Gillnet-caught bass exhibited a range of stress responses and 20%–24% mortality shortly …

Investigating Spatial And Seasonal Differences In Microgastropod Assemblages Within The Little-Studied Camamu Bay, Brazil: A Potential Bioindicator For Remote Tropical Areas?, Francisco Kelmo, Sol De Maria Cesar Ferreira, Eduardo Henrique Galvão, Martin J. Attrill
School of Biological and Marine Sciences
This study investigates spatial and seasonal variation in the assemblages of benthic microgastropods (snails < 5–10 mm in length) within a poorly studied tropical bay. As these organisms are abundant, diverse and relatively easy to sample, with well-established taxonomy, they may prove a highly suitable group for ecological studies in such areas. Sediment samples were collected from three river basins in Camamu Bay, Brazil, during the wet and dry seasons. A total of 132 microgastropod species was recorded, demonstrating high diversity. The most abundant species were Eulithidium affine, Bittiolum varium, Cerithium atratum, Vitta virginea and Schwartziella bryerea. The least abundant species were Tenaturris gemma, Turbinella laevigata, Petaloconchus erectus, Parviturboides interruptus and Vitrinella cupidinensis. Statistical analysis revealed significant seasonal and spatial differences in diversity and assemblage composition, which correlated with environmental gradients. The results suggest that microgastropods are a suitable component of the biota for ecological and applied studies in marine sediments, particularly in remote tropical locations where full macrofaunal analysis may be challenging. Whilst further testing across impact gradients is needed, this approach offers a practical solution for ecological investigations in remote regions with limited taxonomic expertise and highlights microgastropods as a useful indicator taxon for impact biomonitoring in tropical marine sediments.

The persistent underrepresentation of women in computing higher education remains a global challenge, with women comprising less than 20% of ICT specialists across the EU. While substantial research has identified effective interventions to support underrepresented groups, this evidence remains fragmented across academic publications, grey literature, and institutional reports. Educators seeking to implement gender-inclusive practices face significant barriers in identifying relevant initiatives, understanding implementation requirements, and accessing practical guidance suitable for their institutional contexts. This work presents TechMate, a fully operational (https://ascnet.ie/techmate/) web-based, open-access toolkit designed to bridge the gap between research evidence and practical implementation. The toolkit consolidates over 25 …

Blockchain provides secure and decentralized data storage. Normal blockchains permanently store data. Mutable blockchains allow users to change data, but this reduces tamper resistance. This paper tests both methods in PaB-PIF, a hybrid architecture for IoT-Fog networks. Our design uses an immutable mainchain in the cloud layer and mutable sidechains in the fog layer. We analyze throughput, latency, and tamper resistance using math models and simulations. Results show that blockchain greatly improves network security. Without blockchain, the network has zero tamper resistance. The mutable blockchain in the fog layer has a tamper resistance of 0.58. The immutable blockchain in the …

WebAssembly (Wasm) has emerged as a lightweight, portable, and secure execution environment beyond the browser, with growing adoption in data-intensive, machine learning, and performance-sensitive workloads. However, the runtime ecosystem remains fragmented, and a systems-level understanding of how runtime design affects performance and energy efficiency is still lacking. This paper makes two contributions. First, it presents a taxonomy of modern WebAssembly runtimes that classifies the runtime landscape by execution model, compilation strategy, integration style, and systemslevel capabilities. Second, it provides an empirical evaluation of 13WASI-compatible runtimes and a native baseline across eight benchmarks, namely, four machine learning workloads (Logistic Regression, K-Means, …

Spatial ability has been identified as an essential cognitive ability for educational performance broadly in science, technology, engineering, and mathematics (STEM) education. Further, children with higher levels of this ability are more likely to choose STEM educational pathways. It is theorised that a benefit of spatial ability lies in affording young people further capacity to think and reason effectively in diverse problem-solving contexts, which translates into desirable educational outcomes. However, substantial evidence has identified a gender gap favouring boys particularly in the mental rotation spatial factor, and there is less evidence for any similar gender gaps for other spatial factors, …

To predict chlorogenic acid (CGA) concentration in coffee during roasting, a machine learning algorithm was applied to mid-infrared (MIR) data. A total of 44 roasting samples between 140 and 220 °C, along with an unroasted control, were dry-heated in an eddy current roaster and subsequently ground and measured. CGA concentrations were predicted from MIR spectroscopy data using a multilayer perceptron (MLP) regressor and validated against a high-performance liquid chromatography with diode array detector reference. The algorithm performed spectral preprocessing and selected relevant wavenumber regions. The MLP-based model achieved a high coefficient of determination, outperforming classic peak evaluation, indicating that automated …

This study introduces a semiclassical modeling for the impact of proton irradiation on two perovskite solar cell structures: FA0.7Cs0.3Pb(I0.9Br0.1)3/C60 and Cs0.01MA0.01FA0.98PbI3/P3HT using coupled current-continuity and rate equations linked to irradiation-induced defect-generation rate. Results reveal a strong dependence of radiation response on perovskite composition. Proton irradiation can induce both ionizing and displacement damage in perovskite solar cells leading to vacancy and defect generation. The result is increased recombination and degradation of performance parameters (reduced fill factor and efficiency) or, otherwise, annihilation of …

This paper attempts to answer questions regarding the link between engineering success and spatial skills through three themes. The previous research of the authors in examining the questions surrounding each theme is the focus of this paper; we acknowledge that others around the world may have conducted similar research, but the specific findings of the authors are the main focus of this paper. In the first theme, we examine data from several author-led studies where positive correlations have been found between spatial skill levels and proficiency in tasks that are a part of what it means to be an engineer. …

The study emphasizes an in-depth in vitro efficiency analysis of bacterial cellulose (BC)-polyvinylpyrrolidone (PVP) composite hydrogel scaffolds which are doped with different concentrations of β-tri-calcium phosphate (β-TCP) and hydroxyapatite (HA). The hydrogels are prepared with the natural polymer, BC, and synthetic polymer, PVP. Polyethylene glycol (PEG) is also used as an anti-cytotoxic agent and agar is used as a gelling agent. β-TCP and HA were given in the ratio (w/w): 20:80 (BC-PVP- β-TCP/HA_20:80), 40:60 (BC-PVP-β-TCP/HA_40:60), 50:50 (BC-PVP-β-TCP/HA_50:50). In vitro efficacy of the different tri-calcium phosphate (β-TCP) and hydroxyapatite BC-PVP composite hydrogel scaffolds are analyzed through comparative analysis of the cell …
