Leveraging Natural Language Processing Methods For Next Generation Customer Service In Telecommunications Industry, Hesham Abdelmotaleb
Leveraging Natural Language Processing Methods For Next Generation Customer Service In Telecommunications Industry, Hesham Abdelmotaleb
School of Engineering, Computing and Mathematics Theses
This research explores application of Natural Language Processing (NLP) methods to better understand and improve customer service feedback in telecom industry. We collect novel reallife datasets of customer reviews and social media comments within British telecommunication industry over one year. Then, we apply three main modelling approaches. First, we study topic modelling for short text: we propose a new evaluation metric for GSDMM model and demonstrate that our metric helps to choose meaningful topics when texts are very brief. Second, we perform an extensive comparative study of word embedding models for text classification: we test nine word embedding and feature …
Investigating The Biocompatibility Of Nanosilver Hydroxyapatite Coatings With Human Gingival Fibroblasts To Enhance Abutment Integrity For Periodontal Health, Sian Morgan
School of Engineering, Computing and Mathematics Theses
Dental implants are susceptible to bacterial colonisation, which can initiate peri-implant inflammation and ultimately lead to peri-implantitis and implant failure. Antimicrobial surface modifications represent a promising strategy to mitigate bacterial infection however, such approaches must preserve biocompatibility with peri-implant soft tissue cells to ensure effective mucosal sealing and long-term implant success. In particular, human gingival fibroblasts (HGFs) play a critical role in soft tissue integration at the implant-abutment interface, yet their interactions with antimicrobial silver-based coatings remain insufficiently understood. This thesis investigates the biocompatibility of nano silver-hydroxyapatite (Ag+nHA) coatings deposited on titanium substrates, with the aim of developing an antimicrobial …
Mapping The Uk Commercial Fishing Network: A Knowledge-Based Framework For Sustainable Technology Adoption And Environmental Decision-Making, Matthew Prowse
Mapping The Uk Commercial Fishing Network: A Knowledge-Based Framework For Sustainable Technology Adoption And Environmental Decision-Making, Matthew Prowse
School of Engineering, Computing and Mathematics Theses
The UK commercial fishing industry operates within a complex web of stakeholders, technologies, and environmental pressures that challenge traditional approaches to sustainability and resource management. This research develops a comprehensive framework for understanding how technological advancement in UK fisheries creates unintended consequences that threaten long-term sustainability. Through a mixed-methods approach combining PESTLE analysis, grounded theory methodology, stakeholder mapping, case study investigation, this study introduces the "By-Product and Excess" theoretical framework to explain how fishing technologies generate two critical outcomes: by-products (undesirable environmental impacts such as CO₂ emissions, microplastics, and ecosystem damage) and excess (enhanced capacity to harvest beyond sustainable limits). The …

On-Orbit Manufacturing (OOM) presents a transformative paradigm in space mission design, enabling the in-situ production of components, tools, and large-scale structures beyond terrestrial constraints. This dissertation investigates the feasibility of OOM missions by developing a modular, iterative algorithm to support early-stage mission design and scenario analysis. The central hypothesis is that such an algorithm can be parameterised to evaluate a wide spectrum of manufacturing cases in space, ranging from small utility items to large structural systems. The research pursues four core objectives: assessing the terrestrial manufacturing lifecycle and its applicability in the space environment; identifying candidate manufacturing techniques suitable for orbital …
Coupled Thermo-Structural Analysis Of Steel Reinforced Geopolymer Concrete Structural Members, Bin Zhang
Coupled Thermo-Structural Analysis Of Steel Reinforced Geopolymer Concrete Structural Members, Bin Zhang
School of Engineering, Computing and Mathematics Theses
This thesis investigates the coupled thermal, flexural and steel–concrete bond response of steel-reinforced geopolymer concrete (GPC) and ordinary Portland cement concrete (OPCC) beam cross-sections subjected to one-sided standard fire exposure. A sequential analytical framework is developed to link transient heat-transfer analysis, temperature-dependent sectional flexural analysis, and temperature-dependent bond and flexural–bond coupling assessment. The thermal analysis is performed using a one-dimensional transient heat-conduction model implemented in MATLAB PDEPE. Separate temperature-dependent density, specific-heat and thermal-conductivity relationships are adopted for OPCC and GPC. A dedicated OPCC model of the B1 validation specimen is assessed against 13 matched experimental reinforcement-temperature measurements, giving R^2=0.9542 and an …
Life Cycle Assessment Of Marine Composite Recreational Craft Manufacturing And Operations, Badr Moutik
Life Cycle Assessment Of Marine Composite Recreational Craft Manufacturing And Operations, Badr Moutik
School of Engineering, Computing and Mathematics Theses
Marine composite recreational craft are growing in number. Sectoral roadmaps for sustainable development are increasing pressure to demonstrate life cycle environmental performance. Life cycle assessment (LCA) has been identified as a key strategic decision support tool. However, current practice is undermined by sparse, non-representative data and methodological inconsistencies. These weaknesses increase the risk of biased or misleading interpretation, constrain wider uptake of LCA, and limit the sector’s ability to respond credibly to tightening environmental sustainability expectations. This thesis assesses the cradle-to-grave environmental impacts of a market-representative glass-fibre reinforced plastic (GRP) motor yacht across 16 impact categories. The research builds on …
Modelling And Optimisation Of Dynamic Power Cable Configurations For Floating Offshore Renewable Energy, Anna Holcombe
Modelling And Optimisation Of Dynamic Power Cable Configurations For Floating Offshore Renewable Energy, Anna Holcombe
School of Engineering, Computing and Mathematics Theses
Floating offshore renewable energy requires dynamic power cables to transmit generated electricity from the floating device to the seabed, or to an adjacent device, so that it can be exported to shore. Dynamic power cables are connected at the top end to a floating device, and traverse the water column, subjected to loading at the hang-off, and direct hydrodynamic loading from waves and currents. Their reliability has been a concern within industry and research, particularly due to historically high failure rates of static subsea cables. It is essential that design and analysis of dynamic power cables is accurate, to mitigate …

Recent Advances In High Surface Area Porous Materials For Electrochemical Energy Storage Devices, Anu Prathap Mylamparambil Udayan, Balwinder Kaur, Anandhakumar Sundaramurthy, Kirtanjot Kaur, Baljit Singh
Research Outputs: 2025-Present
Electrochemical energy storage devices can be classified into two categories: supercapacitors and rechargeable batteries. These devices are designed to store and release energy, finding applications in both portable electronics and electrical vehicles. To remain competitive, a material must possess high energy density (Ed) and power density (Pd), allowing for higher mileage, faster charging, and slower discharge. Another crucial factor to consider is the overall weight/volume reduction and the material's high mechanical strength. Recently, porous carbon-based materials and multifunctional materials with high mechanical strength, flexibility, and electrical properties have garnered significant attention. This review summarizes recent developments in high surface area …

For Whom The Tale’S Told: Multilevel Perspective On Narrative And Identity In Information Ecosystems, Jihye Song
For Whom The Tale’S Told: Multilevel Perspective On Narrative And Identity In Information Ecosystems, Jihye Song
Graduate Studies Theses and Dissertations 2026
In contemporary online information environments, narratives do not merely convey facts. They organize meaning, signal identity, and guide collective sensemaking. During periods of crisis and uncertainty, these processes become especially salient, as individuals and communities turn to social media to interpret unfolding events. At the same time, these environments are shaped by complex sociotechnical dynamics, including platform affordances, algorithmic amplification, elite influence, and grassroots participation. These dynamics form ecosystems in which narratives and identities are constructed, contested, and stabilized. Drawing on theory and empirical analyses of COVID-19 discourse on Twitter, this work develops and applies a multilevel framework to explain …

This work presents the implementation and experimental evaluation of the CHIRP communication algorithm on resource-constrained ESP32-S3 microcontrollers, bridging the gap between simulation-based validation and real-world deployment. CHIRP is a lightweight, fully decentralized peer-to-peer protocol designed for IoT networks with dynamic node membership, enabling runtime node join and leave operations without centralized coordination or global reconfiguration. The implementation comprises two main components: C-based node firmware running on FreeRTOS [1, 2], which implements the full CHIRP protocol including peer discovery, round-robin pairing, and firefly-inspired phase synchronization, and a Python-based experiment controller that orchestrates network experiments and collects per-node metrics without influencing protocol …
A Sensor Fusion And Optimization Framework For High-Resolution Power Outage Detection And Energy Asset Allocation, Elizabeth Trader
A Sensor Fusion And Optimization Framework For High-Resolution Power Outage Detection And Energy Asset Allocation, Elizabeth Trader
Graduate Studies Theses and Dissertations 2026
Existing power outage datasets lack the spatial and temporal resolution required for neighborhood- level risk assessment, and conventional energy system design optimizes for cost without accounting for community-level demand - resulting in inefficient and inequitable asset de- ployment. This dissertation presents IONCORTEX, a framework integrating three technical contributions: a heterogeneous sensor fusion pipeline combining social media signals with municipal infrastructure records for intersection-level outage detection at six-hour tempo- ral resolution, maintaining detection capability during telecommunications disruptions; a techno-economic analysis pipeline evaluating photovoltaic, battery storage, hydrogen, and diesel portfolios using NREL’s System Advisor Model with Monte Carlo uncertainty quan- tification; and …
Abig4l: A Semantic Reasoning Engine For Verilog Via Abstract Interpretation, Alicia Thoney
Abig4l: A Semantic Reasoning Engine For Verilog Via Abstract Interpretation, Alicia Thoney
Graduate Studies Theses and Dissertations 2026
Modern Electronic Design Automation (EDA) flows treat structural and semantic reasoning as separate concerns. Synthesis structurally optimizes RTL, while dedicated verification teams validate functional behavior through testbenches and formal methods. This organizational divide means designers have no automatic, sound way to understand what their RTL does at the moment they are writing it. This thesis introduces AbIG4L (Abstract Interpretation of Generic 4-valued Logic), a static analysis framework that bridges this gap by delivering sound semantic reasoning automatically, directly within the hardware design loop.
The framework operates on a language-agnostic intermediate representation to compute sound over-approximations of hardware behavior across 0, …

Cfd Analysis Of A Full Heat Exchanger Between Ammonia And Supercritical Co2 In Aviation Application, Mairah Ahmed
Graduate Studies Theses and Dissertations 2026
The aviation industry’s transition toward lower-carbon propulsion systems has accelerated interest in alternative fuels, including ammonia–hydrogen fuel blends. In this work, a supercritical CO2 Brayton cycle is integrated with the exhaust stream of a turbofan engine to recover waste heat and utilize it for ammonia preheating and cracking. The recovered thermal energy raises the ammonia temperature to the level required for catalytic decomposition, enabling onboard hydrogen production. The proposed architecture combines ammonia cracking with a high-bypass, two-shaft turbofan engine representative of the propulsion system employed on the Boeing 737 MAX 8. This approach addresses the challenges associated with onboard hydrogen …
Developing A System Dynamics Framework For Sustained Digital Transformation, Quintal Battle
Developing A System Dynamics Framework For Sustained Digital Transformation, Quintal Battle
Graduate Studies Theses and Dissertations 2026
Despite significant organizational investments, more than 70% (Ellmer et al., 2025) of digital transformation initiatives fail. The existing literature evaluates transformation mechanisms as separate factors rather than as interacting, evolving feedback systems. This dissertation addresses this gap by developing and validating a system dynamics framework for sustained digital transformation. Guided by three research questions, the study examined the mechanisms that enable or constrain transformation, identified mechanisms distinctive to digital transformation contexts, and evaluated how existing change management frameworks guide transformation efforts. The study followed a six-phase methodology that combined a systematic literature review of peer-reviewed studies, empirical cases, causal loop …
A Systematic Review And Characterization Of Privacy Noncompliance In Real-World Applications, Alexander E. Charkiewicz
A Systematic Review And Characterization Of Privacy Noncompliance In Real-World Applications, Alexander E. Charkiewicz
Graduate Studies Theses and Dissertations 2026
Software applications increasingly rely on user data to provide their functionality, but improper handling of such data can lead to serious privacy noncompliance with applicable regulations and policies. A prominent example is the Facebook–Cambridge Analytica scandal, in which a third-party application collected the personal data of approximately 87 million Facebook users without users' consent. Despite growing attention to privacy compliance, two key challenges hinder the systematic understanding and analysis of privacy noncompliance. First, unlike security vulnerabilities, which have been systematically categorized through taxonomies such as the Common Weakness Enumeration (CWE), privacy noncompliance lacks a technical taxonomy describing how it manifests …

Design, Fabrication Modeling, And Optical Metrology Of Mwir Silicon Metalenses, Weiyu Chen
Graduate Studies Theses and Dissertations 2026
Mid-wave infrared (MWIR) optical systems require compact, broadband, manufacturable components whose performance can be predicted and measured reliably. Silicon metalenses are attractive because silicon combines high refractive index, MWIR transparency, and semiconductor-compatible fabrication. This dissertation develops a scale-bridging design–fabrication-modeling–metrology framework for MWIR silicon metalenses.
A shared full-aperture framework connects meta-atom libraries, physical layout generation, angular-spectrum propagation, point-spread-function calculation, and focal-plane energy metrics. Building on this foundation, the Dispersive Sweatt Model (DSM) incorporates meta-atom dispersion into conventional ray-tracing software, enabling broadband co-optimization of metasurfaces and refractive elements. A process-aware design framework then incorporates scanning electron microscopy (SEM)-measured height–radius relationships produced by …

An Exploration Of The Professionalization Of Graduate Students Using Rhetorical Theory, Jennifer M. Crowell
Graduate Studies Theses and Dissertations 2026
This qualitative study examines the professionalization of graduate students as a rhetorically mediated and relational process of identity development within an interdisciplinary doctoral program. While existing scholarship emphasizes institutional structures and formal mechanisms of professional preparation, less attention has been given to how graduate students experience professionalization at the individual level. This study addresses that gap by exploring how students interpret expectations, use rhetorical strategies, and construct professional identities across multiple disciplinary contexts.
Grounded in organizational rhetoric and community of practice theory, the study investigates how graduate students in the Texts & Technology Ph.D. Program at the University of Central …
An Empirical Comparison Of K-Nearest-Neighbors And Logistic Regression Classification Models, Jackson Cushing
An Empirical Comparison Of K-Nearest-Neighbors And Logistic Regression Classification Models, Jackson Cushing
Graduate Studies Theses and Dissertations 2026
This thesis presents an empirical comparison of two classification methods: Logistic Regression and K Nearest Neighbors (KNN). The primary objective of this research is to evaluate the strengths and limitations of each method when applied to real-world datasets. Several publicly available datasets on diabetes, breast cancer, heart attack risk, and cardiovascular disease, were analyzed. For each dataset, K Nearest Neighbors models were implemented in the same way logistic regression had already been applied. The results demonstrate that while logistic regression offers interpretable parameter estimates and performs well when the underlying predictor and outcome relationship is approximately linear, however KNN can …
Non-Gaussian Phenomena In Light Scattering And Applications, Shubham Atul Dawda
Non-Gaussian Phenomena In Light Scattering And Applications, Shubham Atul Dawda
Graduate Studies Theses and Dissertations 2026
Physical reality is rarely deterministic; which, when probed by electromagnetic fields that also fluctuate, leads to observables that are most efficiently modelled as statistical processes. At equilibrium, this is usually achieved by invoking the Gaussian statistics of underlying physical processes, however, in practice, one often encounters out-of-equilibrium conditions where Gaussian descriptions may not suffice. Such situations are plentiful in nature– from biology to astronomy. This dissertation addresses several non-Gaussian phenomena associated with light scattering, and includes specific models’ derivations, experimental techniques developments, and demonstrations of potential applications. The systematic presentation will consider circumstances that infringe upon specific assumptions of the …

Through the integration of experimental characterization, machine learning, deep learning, numerical modeling, and physics-informed artificial intelligence, this dissertation explores the thermal performance of polymer-derived ceramic matrix composites (CMCs) for hydrogen combustion environments. The polymer infiltration and pyrolysis (PIP) process was used to create Yttria-stabilized zirconia (YSZ)-fiber-reinforced ceramic matrix composites, which were then experimentally assessed under hydrogen torch and hydrogen combustion conditions typical of next-generation gas turbine and aerospace propulsion systems. Front- and back-surface temperature measurements were used to continually monitor thermal reactions, and post-test microstructural characterization and numerical simulations were carried out to evaluate material integrity and heat-transfer behavior. To …
Flow Field Characterization Of The Hyperreact Vitiated Hypersonic Wind Tunnel, Erik R. Fernandez
Flow Field Characterization Of The Hyperreact Vitiated Hypersonic Wind Tunnel, Erik R. Fernandez
Graduate Studies Theses and Dissertations 2026
Reliable interpretation of hypersonic ground-test data requires knowledge of the thermochemical state delivered to the test section, especially in combustion-heated facilities where the gas is chemically altered before nozzle expansion. This thesis investigates the HyperReact vitiated hypersonic wind tunnel using the effective specific-heat ratio, γeff, as an experimentally inferred indicator of the coupled chemical and gas-dynamic behavior of hydrogen-air vitiated flow. HyperReact produces high stagnation temperatures through hydrogen-air combustion before expanding the mixture through interchangeable converging-diverging nozzles. During this expansion, temperature-dependent specific heats, molecular-weight changes, finite-rate chemistry, and internal energy relaxation can modify the relationship between Mach number, pressure ratio, …

Ex Vivo Sensitivity Assays With Molecular Validation To Guide Preclinical Drug Selection For Schwann Cell Tumors, Ethan W. Hass
Ex Vivo Sensitivity Assays With Molecular Validation To Guide Preclinical Drug Selection For Schwann Cell Tumors, Ethan W. Hass
Graduate Studies Theses and Dissertations 2026
Schwann cells are the glial cell of the peripheral nervous system. They are dependent on receptor tyrosine kinase-mediated RAS signaling, cell matrix adhesion, and cell-cell contact to proliferate during nerve development and repair. These pathways become deregulated with loss of function of the merlin tumor suppressor encoded by NF2, leading to benign tumors called schwannomas. Patients with NF2-related schwannomatosis (NF2-SWN) develop bilateral vestibular schwannomas that cause hearing loss, tinnitus, and death from brainstem compression if untreated. Severe NF2-SWN causes multiple spinal and peripheral schwannomas and neuropathic pain. Schwannomas require careful monitoring, trial and error use of repurposed anti-cancer …
The Influence Of Limb Dominance On Neural Activation Patterns While Performing Different Motor Control Tasks, Kevin A. Hooks
The Influence Of Limb Dominance On Neural Activation Patterns While Performing Different Motor Control Tasks, Kevin A. Hooks
Graduate Studies Theses and Dissertations 2026
Humans interact with our environment in many ways. One of the most outward-facing aspects of this is limb dominance. The neural underpinnings of limb dominance remain in question today. The objective of this research was to use different methods to analyze neural activation while subjects performed upper extremity motor tasks while recording electroencephalography (EEG). The first experiment used decoding methods to examine whether neural signals collected from the contralateral limb could be used to train a classifier to test on the ipsilateral limb during a reach-to-grasp or reach-to-touch task. It was determined above chance level that within-subject action and direction …
Integrated Corridor Management Framework For Severe Freeway Incidents, Sanjida Afroz Iqra
Integrated Corridor Management Framework For Severe Freeway Incidents, Sanjida Afroz Iqra
Graduate Studies Theses and Dissertations 2026
Traffic incidents are a major source of non-recurrent congestion on urban freeways, generating substantial mobility, safety, and economic impacts. Severe incidents that block multiple or all travel lanes are particularly disruptive because they degrade freeway operations and propagate congestion onto surrounding arterials. Effective Integrated Corridor Management (ICM) requires the ability to identify severe incidents, estimate their network-wide impacts, and anticipate the traffic conditions and driver behaviors that contribute to instability. This dissertation develops a data-driven ICM framework to address these challenges using real-world incident, crash, detector, and connected vehicle data from major Central Florida corridors, including I-4 and SR-417. The …

Generating Boundary Conditions For Compound Flood Modeling In A Probabilistic Framework, Pravin Maduwantha Mahanthe Gamage
Generating Boundary Conditions For Compound Flood Modeling In A Probabilistic Framework, Pravin Maduwantha Mahanthe Gamage
Graduate Studies Theses and Dissertations 2026
Flooding in coastal riverine environments is often driven by the combined influence of multiple hydrometeorological flood drivers, including storm surge, rainfall, waves, and river discharge, which is referred to as compound flooding. A robust flood hazard assessment requires simulation of a wide range of flood driver conditions through dynamic compound flood models to capture the variability in resultant flooding. However, such assessments remain limited by the short length of observational records and the high computational cost of physics-based methods used to generate temporally varying boundary conditions. This dissertation develops a statistical framework to characterize compound flood drivers and generate large …
