Effects Of Scapular-Focused Interventions On Shoulder Range Of Motion And Strength Outcomes Associated With Throwing Performance: A Systematic Review With Meta-Analysis, Elijah S. Garcia Jan 2026

Effects Of Scapular-Focused Interventions On Shoulder Range Of Motion And Strength Outcomes Associated With Throwing Performance: A Systematic Review With Meta-Analysis, Elijah S. Garcia

Research Papers

Background

The scapula plays a crucial role in overhead throwing mechanics acting as the proximal base for glenohumeral motion and creating optimal force transfer throughout the kinetic chain. Impaired scapular control can be linked to altered shoulder mechanics, lack of mobility, and increased injury risk in athletes whose sport require overhead movements (overhead athletes) (Cools et al., 2015; Kibler et al., 2021). Scapular stabilization programs are often used in rehabilitation and performance settings, despite the fact that the magnitude of their effectiveness on shoulder range of motion and strength outcomes in throwing populations remains unclear. The purpose of this review …

Digital Colonialism In Ai-Enhanced Sustainability Education: A Decolonial Systematic Review, Matthew Sauber Jan 2026

Digital Colonialism In Ai-Enhanced Sustainability Education: A Decolonial Systematic Review, Matthew Sauber

Faculty Scholarship 2026

As artificial intelligence reshapes higher education globally, its integration into sustainability programs raises urgent questions about equity, epistemological justice, and the reproduction of colonial power structures through technological systems. Education for Sustainable Development (ESD) is premised on inclusive, justice-oriented pedagogy, yet the AI tools increasingly deployed in these programs originate predominantly from the Global North and embed Western epistemological assumptions. This study investigates how AI integration in higher education sustainability programs operates as a form of digital colonialism, creating systematic inequities that contradict ESD’s foundational commitments. We conducted a decolonial systematic review synthesizing 61 empirical studies identified through structured searches …

A Simple Statistical Tool To Correct The Daily Temperature Effect On Dielectric Soil Matric Potential Sensor Readings, Sebastián Bravo Peña, Meindert Commelin, Ole O. Wendroth Jan 2026

A Simple Statistical Tool To Correct The Daily Temperature Effect On Dielectric Soil Matric Potential Sensor Readings, Sebastián Bravo Peña, Meindert Commelin, Ole O. Wendroth

Plant and Soil Sciences Faculty Publications

High-resolution time series recorded by soil water dielectric sensors are often affected by other processes. Dielectric soil matric potential sensors, such as the TEROS 21, exhibit temperature sensitivity, resulting in deviations of readings from the true value due to soil temperature fluctuations. However, methods for correcting this effect remain limited. The objective of this study was to create a straightforward, scale-based statistical approach to mitigate the influence of daily temperature oscillations on matric potential dielectric readings. The temperature sensitivity correction function (TSCF) identifies, quantifies, and smooths diurnal fluctuations caused by soil temperature dynamics. We provide a detailed description of the …

Adversarial Robustness In Biomedical Time-Series Models, Rohan Tiwari Jan 2026

Adversarial Robustness In Biomedical Time-Series Models, Rohan Tiwari

Bioengineering Theses

This study investigates adversarial vulnerabilities in deep learning models for biomedical time-series classification across two clinically important modalities: electrocardiography (ECG) and electroencephalography (EEG). Using the MIT-BIH Arrhythmia and CHB-MIT seizure datasets, I evaluate time-domain attacks (FGSM, PGD), Fourier-domain constrained attacks, and learned spectral perturbations designed to reveal modality-specific sensitivity patterns. Across both tasks, a consistent trend emerges low-frequency components (0–5 Hz) constitute a dominant axis of adversarial vulnerability, with perturbations in this range producing the steepest degradation in classification performance. In ECG models, protecting the physiologically relevant QRS band (5–20 Hz) significantly improves robustness, whereas EEG models remain highly sensitive …

Ocean-driven basal melting of Antarctic ice shelves plays an important role in the mass loss of the Antarctic Ice Sheet. Ice shelf cavity-resolving ocean models are a valuable tool for understanding ice shelf-ocean interactions and for simulating projections of ice shelf and ocean states under future climate. Designed to assess the current state of ice shelf–ocean modelling, the second Ice Shelf–Ocean Model Intercomparison Project, ISOMIP+, consists of 12 ocean model configurations submitted with a common, idealised experimental setup. Here, we focus on the experiments Ocean0–2 (Asay-Davis et al., 2016), which are ocean models with idealised, static ice …

Skipping The Factory: Service-Led Growth And Structural Transformation In The Developing World, Michael Peters, Youdon Zhang, Fabrizio Zilibotti Jan 2026

Skipping The Factory: Service-Led Growth And Structural Transformation In The Developing World, Michael Peters, Youdon Zhang, Fabrizio Zilibotti

Discussion Papers

In today’s developing world, many economies appear to bypass industrialization and transition directly from agriculture to services. The largest rise in service employment has occurred in non-tradable consumer services, such as retail and hospitality, especially in urban areas, where many cities resemble consumer hubs built around local demand. These patterns of growth raise fundamental questions: Can service-led growth sustain improvements in living standards over time? Is service-led growth inherently biased toward affluent urban consumers? What role should policy play? To address these questions, we propose a parsimonious general equilibrium framework that incorporates non-homothetic preferences and locally non-tradable consumer services in …

Current And Emerging Therapeutic Strategies For The Treatment Of Duchenne Muscular Dystrophy, Miguel A. Lopez Perez, Noah L. Weisleder

Molecular and Cellular Biochemistry Faculty Publications

Background/Objectives: Duchenne muscular dystrophy (DMD) is a fatal, progressive neuromuscular disorder caused by mutations in the dystrophin gene, leading to the absence of functional dystrophin protein. As the largest gene in the human genome, the DMD locus is highly susceptible to mutations, contributing to a prevalence of approximately 1 in 3800–6300 live male births worldwide. This review aims to provide a comprehensive and critical synthesis of current and emerging therapeutic strategies for DMD.

Methods: We conducted a narrative review of the literature, integrating findings from clinical trials, regulatory approvals, and preclinical studies. We categorized therapeutic approaches into mutation-agnostic and mutation-specific …

Accounting For Spatial Effects And Social Norms In Making Algorithmic Law: Insights From And Applications In Urban Mobility, Jingkang Gao Jan 2026

Accounting For Spatial Effects And Social Norms In Making Algorithmic Law: Insights From And Applications In Urban Mobility, Jingkang Gao

Journal of Law and Mobility

This Article examines a prominent idea in the law and technology literature: that algorithms and big data can be used to make law dynamic and personalized. As currently envisioned by legal scholars, “algorithmic law” entails laws that adjust in real time to changing conditions and vary across individuals, improving welfare by tailoring legal rules and standards to personal characteristics.

This Article argues that this vision of algorithmic law is incomplete—and often counterproductive. Existing proposals treat personalization as a function of individual attributes alone, overlooking the fact that effects of individual behavior are fundamentally interactive. Individual behavior is shaped by spatial …

A Golden Age For Us . . . Or For The Airlines? Ensuring Robust Federal Consumer Protections To Make Flying Great Again For Everyone, David S. Nahmias, Julian Sanghvi Jan 2026

A Golden Age For Us . . . Or For The Airlines? Ensuring Robust Federal Consumer Protections To Make Flying Great Again For Everyone, David S. Nahmias, Julian Sanghvi

Journal of Law and Mobility

Flying today is not meaningfully better for passengers than it was twenty years ago—and the airlines are largely to blame. Airlines leverage opaque pricing practices and junk fees to extract greater revenue from passengers, while the quality of air travel has deteriorated. Despite its mandate to protect the flying public and the air travel market from deceptive and anticompetitive practices, the Department of Transportation has been largely captured—adopting industry-favorable regulations and procedures while cutting commonsense consumer protections. This Essay examines the airlines’ coordinated campaign to circumvent and dismantle consumer protections, and how the industry have largely captured the federal agency …

From Pixels To Semantics: A Multi-Stage Ai Framework For Structural Damage Detection In Satellite Imagery, Bijay Shakya, Catherine Hoier, Khandaker Mamun Ahmed

Research & Publications

Rapid and accurate structural damage assessment following natural disasters is critical for effective emergency response and recovery. However, remote sensing imagery often suffers from low spatial resolution, contextual ambiguity, and limited semantic interpretability, reducing the reliability of traditional detection pipelines. In this work, we propose a novel hybrid framework that integrates AI-based super-resolution, deep learning object detection, and Vision-Language Models (VLMs) for comprehensive post-disaster building damage assessment. First, we enhance pre- and post-disaster satellite imagery using a Video Restoration Transformer (VRT) to upscale images from 1024x1024 to 4096x4096 resolution, improving structural detail visibility. Next, a YOLOv11-based detector localizes buildings in …

Distilling The Complexity Of Agent-Based Simulations Into Textual Explanations Via Large Language Models, Noé Y. Flandre, Philippe J. Giabbanelli Jan 2026

Distilling The Complexity Of Agent-Based Simulations Into Textual Explanations Via Large Language Models, Noé Y. Flandre, Philippe J. Giabbanelli

VMASC Publications

Communicating the design and results of agent-based models (ABMs) to subject matter experts is challenging, which hinders participation and limits trust in simulation-based decision support. Large language models (LLMs) can communicate ABMs as textual summaries, thus complementing traditional disclosure through statistical and visualization techniques. While prior work translated the structure of conceptual models into narratives via LLMs, our extension covers the dynamics of simulation models via an automated simulation-to-text method that extracts contextual information from NetLogo ABMs, performs repeated simulations, and generates narrative descriptions (including the model’s purpose, parameters, and simulation dynamics) using mutimodal LLMs. Furthermore, four summarization algorithms spanning …

Seismicity And Stress Interactions In Western Nepal: Implications For Strain Accumulation In The Central Himalayan Seismic Gap, Priyanka Dhamala Jan 2026

Seismicity And Stress Interactions In Western Nepal: Implications For Strain Accumulation In The Central Himalayan Seismic Gap, Priyanka Dhamala

Dissertations, Master's Theses and Master's Reports

This study examines the patterns of seismicity in western Nepal within the central Himalayan seismic gap and determines whether current earthquake occurrence represents short-term stress release through clustered seismicity or long -term strain accumulation reflected by independent background earthquakes. A unified earthquake catalog was developed by combining regional and global earthquake catalogs and homogenizing magnitudes to moment magnitude (Mw). Completeness analysis based on the Stepp method indicated that this catalog is reliable for Mw ≥ 4.8. A nearest neighbor declustering algorithm has been implemented to identify clustered earthquakes from background seismicity due to long-term tectonic loading. Frequency-magnitude analysis shows b-values …

Geochemical, Tectonic, And Temporal Evolution Of The Southeastern Superior Craton: Insights From The Three Lakes Region, Michigan, Helen Ann Foldenauer

Dissertations, Master's Theses and Master's Reports

The geodynamic processes associated with the onset of global plate tectonics remain a contentious topic in Earth Sciences. The Superior Craton of south-central Canada is the largest preserved area of known Archean material, and study of this area has contributed greatly to our understanding of these early Earth processes. The study area near Three Lakes, Michigan, was designated by the USGS as part of the Earth Mapping Resources Initiative (EMRI) program. No complete, detailed geologic map currently exists for the assigned area, and by contributing to mapping efforts, this study was able to assess both the Archean tectonic evolution and …

Machines In The Marsh: Struggles Of Peatland Rehabilitation Following The Shutdown Of The Irish Industrial Peat Industry, Maeve Mcgroary Jan 2026

Machines In The Marsh: Struggles Of Peatland Rehabilitation Following The Shutdown Of The Irish Industrial Peat Industry, Maeve Mcgroary

Student Theses 2015-Present

As the EU and the Irish government focus on shifting to green energy and becoming carbon neutral, there has been a growing concern about the use of Irish peatland. For centuries, Irish people have cut and dried peat for the purpose of burning. This would traditionally be used for heating and cooking but as electricity became increasingly popular in the 1960s, companies like Bord na Móna helped industrialize the process of harvesting peat as part of their expansion of several peat-fired electricity stations. Chapter one discusses how decades of overharvesting has caused extreme damage to peatlands and their wildlife. Chapter …

Implementing Culturally Responsive Teaching: A Qualitative Content Analysis Of Emerging Themes, Stephanie Yelder-Stovall Jan 2026

Implementing Culturally Responsive Teaching: A Qualitative Content Analysis Of Emerging Themes, Stephanie Yelder-Stovall

Doctor of Education (EdD)

Culturally responsive teaching (CRT) is a research-grounded pedagogical approach for educational equity centering cultural knowledge to make learning meaningful and relevant (Gay, 2002). However, a persistent gap remains between CRT as a concept and classroom implementation. Research suggests translating the principles of CRT frameworks into classroom practice remains challenging (Gay, 2000, 2010; Sleeter, 2012). Guided by the research question and using Schreier’s (2012) qualitative content analysis approach, I analyzed a dataset of 14 varied sources through a deductive coding frame derived from four theoretical frameworks: (a) Gay’s (2000, 2010) CRT, (b) Hammond’s (2015) ready for rigor, (c) Paris and Alim’s …

Evaluation Of Critical Shear Strength Of Soils In Nebraska Based On Revised Cpt, Chung R. Song, Bashar Al-Nimri, Basil Abu Al Sha'r, Dhurba R. Pandey, Jongwan Eun, Seunghee Kim

Nebraska Department of Transportation: Research Reports

This study evaluated the “Fully Softened Shear Strength (FSSS)” of soils in Nebraska based on a revised Cone Penetration Test(CPT) method. FSSS is a unique strength condition that soils show substantially reduced strength during rainy seasons, eventually causing failure of slopes and other structures.

The revised CPT was adapted to inject water at targeted depths, inducing controlled moisture infiltration and capturing real-time soil softening over designated intervals of 30, 60, or 90 minutes. Through tip resistance (qc) and sleeve friction (fs) measurements under “in-situ” and “wet” conditions, the test effectively identified fully disturbed/low strength zones around the sleeve. Simultaneous sampling …

The Use Of Recycled Plastic In Asphalt Pavements: Feasibility Study, Isabella Bueno, Robert Rea, Jamilla Teixeira Jan 2026

The Use Of Recycled Plastic In Asphalt Pavements: Feasibility Study, Isabella Bueno, Robert Rea, Jamilla Teixeira

Nebraska Department of Transportation: Research Reports

The plastics industry has been actively exploring new end-market opportunities for the more than 35 million tons of waste plastics generated annually. The use of recycled WP in asphalt presents an opportunity to improve pavement performance while reducing the growing amount of WP being landfilled or released into the environment. However, the use of WP in asphalt mixtures poses challenges due to variations in plastic composition and the presence of non-plastic contaminants. The absence of standardized procedures has resulted in inconsistent integration methods and unclear roles of WP within asphalt concrete (AC) mixtures. Therefore, the goal of this multiphase study …

The Divide Of Women’S Health: Systematic Thinking Of Women, Tasfia T. Howlader Jan 2026

The Divide Of Women’S Health: Systematic Thinking Of Women, Tasfia T. Howlader

Honors Theses

Women’s health has constantly been changing- from public health infrastructure to health policies, and even medical advancements. Yet, the struggles are persistent within the gaps present in women’s health. The Socio-Ecological Model (SEM) explains interactions between different levels of relationships, which result in health outcomes that vary from individual factors to environmental factors. Applying the SEM to describe health disparities can help explain how the relationships an individual has influenced their health. This project serves to exemplify these different levels while discussing the tailoring of services to the needs and the importance of populations based on their experiences. Specifically, adhering …

Does A More Functionally Diverse Top Management Team Make The Financial Statements More Comparable?, Md Mahmudul Hasan, Audrey Wen-Hsin Hsu, Sayan Sarkar, Tsung-Hsuan Joey Yang

Accounting Faculty Publications

We examine whether top management team (TMT) functional diversity affects financial statement comparability. Drawing upon upper echelons theory and the information sharing perspective in diversity research, we argue that TMT functional diversity produces more comparable financial statements due to better information sharing and integration. Using a sample of US firms, we find that financial statement comparability is positively associated with TMT functional diversity. We also find that the positive relationship between TMT functional diversity and comparability is more pronounced in firms with a poor information environment. Our findings remain robust after addressing endogeneity concerns. This study contributes to the existing …
