Play For All: Financial And Legal Dilemmas In Proposing Adaptive Playgrounds, John J. Miller Dr., Jason W. Lee Jan 2026

Play For All: Financial And Legal Dilemmas In Proposing Adaptive Playgrounds, John J. Miller Dr., Jason W. Lee

The COSMA Journal

This case study examines the complexities of designing, funding, and legally complying with adaptive and inclusive playgrounds for children with disabilities. Inclusive playgrounds prioritize social integration by enabling children of all abilities to play together, while adaptive playgrounds focus on accommodating specific functional needs through specialized equipment. Both approaches support physical, cognitive, and social development and promote equitable community participation. Titles II and III of the Americans with Disabilities Act (ADA), mandate accessibility in public and private recreational spaces, yet compliance alone does not guarantee meaningful inclusion. Additionally, funding remains a significant challenge, with full-scale adaptive playgrounds often costing hundreds …

What Does Nature Mean In The Abolition Of Man? Or, The Participatory Ontology Behind The Sublime Waterfall, Chris R. Armstrong Jan 2026

What Does Nature Mean In The Abolition Of Man? Or, The Participatory Ontology Behind The Sublime Waterfall, Chris R. Armstrong

Sehnsucht: The C. S. Lewis Journal

If Lewis’s Abolition of Man is simply an argument for objective moral value, or what we have called “the natural law,” then why begin with waterfalls that demand of us certain kinds of aesthetic judgment,[1] and end by saying that technocrats who take Nature in their own hands to control others with it have stepped outside of something larger than moral law, viz. the Tao, the Real itself, and thereby lost their very humanity?[2]

What, that is, is Nature in the Abolition? Certainly, it is not nature as construed in philosophical naturalism after Jane Austen, after the advent …

C. S. Lewis And Artificial Intelligence: An Ai Ethics Problem, Justin E. Edgerly Jan 2026

C. S. Lewis And Artificial Intelligence: An Ai Ethics Problem, Justin E. Edgerly

Sehnsucht: The C. S. Lewis Journal

This paper demonstrates that the quest for safe and ethical AI is undermined by much of the philosophy, implicit and explicit, in AI literature and undergirding AI research and development. C. S. Lewis’s writings provide a prescient and penetrating critique of this philosophy and point toward a “regenerate science” that addresses the present need for wisdom in AI development. This paper contributes to the field of AI ethics by presenting several Lewisian concerns about the nature, application, and undergirding philosophy of current and future AI technologies, as well as a Lewisian perspective on the requirements for safe and ethical AI.

Defensive Publications Series

Systems and methods can quantify user journey progression in digital advertising analytics, as some static, rule-based models may not capture the non-linear nature of certain user behaviors. The disclosed technology can utilize a data-driven framework with a sequential prediction model, such as an n-gram model, to analyze user interaction data. Raw user actions can be ingested and mapped to discrete symbols, or grams, which can then be formed into chronological sequences representing user journeys. The model can process these advertiser-specific sequences to compute a transition probability table that quantifies the likelihood of a user's next action based on their recent …

Generation Of Synthetic Photographs Via Video Synthesis And Heuristic Frame Selection, Mira Leung Jan 2026

Generation Of Synthetic Photographs Via Video Synthesis And Heuristic Frame Selection, Mira Leung

Defensive Publications Series

Generating novel synthetic photographs of locations can be challenging, as some generative techniques may introduce visual artifacts or compositional inconsistencies when creating new camera perspectives. The described systems and methods can address this by using two or more source images as input for a generative video synthesis model. The model can produce a short video that interpolates or extrapolates between the viewpoints of the source images, creating a set of new, spatially coherent camera angles. This generated video may then be deconstructed into a pool of candidate frames. A heuristic, such as a feature similarity score, can be used to …

Stylespade: Realistic Image Augmentation For Robust Infrastructure Crack Segmentation Via Ensemble Learning, Jaeung Sim, Menas Kafatos, Seung Hee Kim, Yangwon Lee

Institute for ECHO Articles and Research

The rapid deterioration of global infrastructure necessitates precise and automated crack detection technologies for proactive maintenance. However, deep learning-based segmentation models often suffer from a scarcity of diverse, high-quality labeled datasets. This study proposes StyleSPADE, a novel conditional image generation model that integrates semantic masks and style images to synthesize realistic crack data with diverse background textures while preserving precise geometric morphology. To validate the effectiveness of the generated data, we conducted extensive semantic segmentation tasks using Transformer-based (Mask2Former, Swin-UPerNet) and CNN-based (K-Net) models. Experimental results demonstrate that StyleSPADE-based augmentation significantly outperforms baseline models, achieving a Crack IoU of 0.6376 …

The Esg Disclosure Paradox: Gaps In Environmental Justice Criteria, Barbara Ballan Jan 2026

The Esg Disclosure Paradox: Gaps In Environmental Justice Criteria, Barbara Ballan

UC Law Environmental Journal

Environmental Justice (“EJ”) and Environmental Social Governance (“ESG”) are terms used to address the impacts of corporate actions as well as environmental and social regulation on the people and the planet. ESG disclosure is a corporate-driven invention that aims to measure progress towards sustainability and disclose environmental and social criteria while fostering value for businesses. EJ, by contrast, emerged as a social movement that evolved into regulatory frameworks. Governmental agencies and EJ advocates are utilizing EJ mapping tools and metrics to assess inequalities in environmental impacts caused by private and public policy and decision-making. Though these concepts may initially create …

The Case For A Moratorium On Deep-Sea Mining: The International Seabed Authority, Indigenous Rights, And Marine Ecosystems In The Eastern Pacific, Afrah A. Qoqandi Jan 2026

The Case For A Moratorium On Deep-Sea Mining: The International Seabed Authority, Indigenous Rights, And Marine Ecosystems In The Eastern Pacific, Afrah A. Qoqandi

UC Law Environmental Journal

The rising interest in deep-sea commercial exploitation has sparked a powerful debate over the environmental and social justice implications of mining the ocean’s depths for valuable minerals. Deep-sea mining targets polymetallic nodules found on the seabed, containing metals critical for green technologies like electric vehicles and solar cells. The Clarion-Clipperton Zone (“CCZ”) in the eastern Pacific is estimated to hold more nickel, manganese, and cobalt than all terrestrial resources combined. As one of the last largely untouched ecosystems, deep-sea mining in the CCZ raises significant concerns about the irreversible harm to its biodiversity and the disruption to Indigenous communities reliant …

The Variation Of Eigenvalues Of The Two-Dimensional Magnetic Schrödinger Operator With Respect To The Angle Of A Flat Sector, Araz R. Aliev, Elshad H. Eyvazov Jan 2026

The Variation Of Eigenvalues Of The Two-Dimensional Magnetic Schrödinger Operator With Respect To The Angle Of A Flat Sector, Araz R. Aliev, Elshad H. Eyvazov

Turkish Journal of Mathematics

A two-dimensional Schrödinger operator with a spherically symmetric electric potential and an Aharonov Bohm magnetic field in a circular sector under Neumann boundary conditions is considered. The intervals of the angular variation of the flat region are found, where the eigenvalues of the Neumann problem for the Schrödinger operator with a spherically symmetric electric potential strictly decrease monotonically in the Aharonov-Bohm magnetic field.

Some Methods For Finding The Number Of Partitions Of N With M−Parts, P(N, M), Yusuf Soyvural, Ali̇ Bülent Eki̇n

Turkish Journal of Mathematics

P(n, m) denotes the number of partitions of n with m parts, while Pm(n) denotes the number of partitions of n with parts at most m. It is a well-known result that the number of partitions of n ≥ 0 into m or fewer parts is equal to Pm(n). In the literature, there are some results for P(n, m) and Pm(n) for some values of m. In this work, we give more compact results for P(n …

Fubini Collocation Method For Numerical Solutions Of Differential Equations With Quadratic And Cubic Nonlinearities, Kübra Erdem Bi̇çer, Havva Türkhan Jan 2026

Fubini Collocation Method For Numerical Solutions Of Differential Equations With Quadratic And Cubic Nonlinearities, Kübra Erdem Bi̇çer, Havva Türkhan

Turkish Journal of Mathematics

In this study, the Fubini collocation method is proposed for the approximate solution of nonlinear differential equations. The method utilizes fundamental relations involving Fubini polynomials and their derivatives, employing collocation points to enhance solution accuracy. Within this framework, the given differential equation is transformed into a system of nonlinear algebraic equations involving the unknown coefficients of the approximate solution. This resulting system is then solved using appropriate numerical techniques to obtain the approximate solution. The effectiveness of the proposed method is demonstrated through several test problems, with accuracy evaluated using absolute error functions. Furthermore, illustrative examples and residual-based error analysis …

Trust In Automation Causing Automation Complacency In Relation To General Aviation: A Quantitative Study, Bart Augustin Marcules Jan 2026

Trust In Automation Causing Automation Complacency In Relation To General Aviation: A Quantitative Study, Bart Augustin Marcules

Doctoral Dissertations and Projects

This quantitative causal-comparative study examined whether a relationship exists between Trust in Automation (TIA) and the potential for automation complacency in general aviation between pilots flying automated and non-automated aircraft as single pilots, while controlling for pilot generation. Autonomation can lead to automation complacency through overreliance and trust in the automation. Automation complacency may cause pilots to lose situational awareness and be surprised by automation surprises, leading to detrimental outcomes. Although automation complacency has long challenged commercial pilots, resulting in significant research on this issue, little research has focused on this issue in general aviation. The limited research is due …
