The Use Of Isbared/Ishaped And Elimination Of Reviewing Patients’ Chart Before Handoff To Decrease Incremental Overtime, Sheila Bucao
The Use Of Isbared/Ishaped And Elimination Of Reviewing Patients’ Chart Before Handoff To Decrease Incremental Overtime, Sheila Bucao
Master's Projects and Capstones
Problem: Incremental overtime was found to majorly impact the financial well-being of a stroke unit. From an allocated budget of 22 hours per pay period, the unit’s incremental overtime averaged 40 hours. The stroke unit had skilled-mix competencies, further complicating handoffs. The absence of a standard reporting method means that reviewing patients’ charts takes approximately 10 to 15 minutes, extending what should be a quick, but thorough nurse knowledge exchange.
Context: The body of evidence reviewed indicated that pertinent information to patient care is not left out or missed when a standardized tool is used during handoff. Based on Lean …
Efficient Crispr/Cas9 Mutagenesis For Neurobehavioral Screening In Adult Zebrafish, Dana Shaw, Mayssa Mokalled
Efficient Crispr/Cas9 Mutagenesis For Neurobehavioral Screening In Adult Zebrafish, Dana Shaw, Mayssa Mokalled
Open Access Publications
Adult zebrafish are widely used to interrogate mechanisms of disease development and tissue regeneration. Yet, the prospect of large-scale genetics in adult zebrafish has traditionally faced a host of biological and technical challenges, including inaccessibility of adult tissues to high-throughput phenotyping and the spatial and technical demands of adult husbandry. Here, we describe an experimental pipeline that combines high-efficiency CRISPR/Cas9 mutagenesis with functional phenotypic screening to identify genes required for spinal cord repair in adult zebrafish. Using CRISPR/Cas9 dual-guide ribonucleic proteins, we show selective and combinatorial mutagenesis of 17 genes at 28 target sites with efficiencies exceeding 85% in adult …
Interdependence With Our Most Forgetful Elders: Alzheimer's In The Anthropocene, Christine Heller
Interdependence With Our Most Forgetful Elders: Alzheimer's In The Anthropocene, Christine Heller
Electronic Theses and Dissertations
This dissertation uses autoethnography and critical psychological and philosophical theories to explore what people with Alzheimer’s disease teach us about being, forgetting, and dying in the Anthropocene. The author collected personal memory data from her lived experience of being with her mother while she had Alzheimer’s disease, and organized these memories into a series of vignettes. Each vignette was analyzed with critical psychological and philosophical theories to illuminate intersubjective themes of denial, things, ancestors, place, dying, and time. These themes connected the personal to the epochal and articulated the wisdom that our most forgetful elders can share in the Anthropocene, …

A lack of new drug targets and drug mechanisms, coupled with drug-pipeline attrition, represent significant problems in oncology drug discovery. Towards addressing this challenge, “fully-functionalized small-molecule probes” (FFSMPs) have been established, which are compounds that can be immediately used as “bait” to capture their protein targets under the same assay conditions used for oncology-based phenotypic screening. Specifically, each FFSMP library member contains one or more structural-diversity elements to promote interactions of the probe with different protein targets in living cells, an electrophile or photoreactive functional group for covalent attachment of the probe to interacting proteins via affinity or photoaffinity labeling, …

Exploring The Impact Of The Achievement Gap On Shame And Resilience In African American College Students, Brittany R. Thomas
Exploring The Impact Of The Achievement Gap On Shame And Resilience In African American College Students, Brittany R. Thomas
Electronic Theses and Dissertations
The achievement gap refers to the stark difference that occurs between racial or gender groups, as one group performs significantly higher than the other. An achievement gap has the propensity to produce psychological distress, as well as buffering techniques that are necessary for survival and success. Growing research shows that African American college students experience unique levels of trauma, shame, hardship, macro, and micro-aggressions, suggesting that these students learn to self-preserve as early as 10 years old. This study used a Pearson correlation, Independent T-Test, and a Moderated Multiple Regression to explore the impact of the achievement gap on shame …

The E-hook of β-tubulin plays instrumental roles in cytoskeletal regulation and function. The last six C-terminal residues of the βII isotype, a peptide of amino acid sequence EGEDEA, extend from the microtubule surface and have eluded characterization with classic X-ray crystallographic techniques. The band position of the characteristic amide I vibration of small peptide fragments is heavily dependent on the length of the peptide chain, the extent of intramolecular hydrogen bonding, and the overall polarity of the fragment. The dependence of the E residue’s amide I ν(C=O) and the αCOO− terminal ν(C=O) bands on the neighboring side chain, the length …

Cost Considerations For Estimating Smallsat I&T, Rachel Sholder, Kathy Kha
Cost Considerations For Estimating Smallsat I&T, Rachel Sholder, Kathy Kha
Small Satellite Conference
In the early phases of project formulation, mission integration and test (I&T) costs are typically estimated via a wrap factor approach, analogies to similar missions adjusted for mission specifics, or a Bottom Up Estimate (BUE). The wrap factor approach estimates mission I&T costs as a percentage of payload and spacecraft hardware costs. This percentage is based on data from historical missions, with the assumption that the project being estimated shares similar characteristics with the underlying data set used to develop the wrap factor. This technique has worked well for traditional spacecraft builds since typically as hardware costs grow, I&T test …

A 'Smad' Tool For Nano And Micro Satellites, Amitha Saleem, Amal Chandran, Sarthak Srivastava
Small Satellite Conference
Most of the Space Mission Analysis and Design (SMAD) tools available in the industry are geared towards small and large satellites. The relationships for satellite mass, power, volume, pointing accuracy, design life versus cost available in the literature are primarily from satellite platforms 100 kg and higher, built for 3+ years mission life. Nano and microsatellites use a very different design philosophy leveraging Commercial-Off-The-Shelf (COTS) components, minimal redundancy, higher risk, have rapid development times and shorter mission durations. Here, we present a nano and microsatellite mission design tool built on a database containing about 140 earth-orbiting satellites. The database contains …

SmallSat’s offer low-cost solutions to traditionally high cost, high SWaP mission areas including GEOINT, space domain awareness (SDA), and science missions. While initial engineering may offer intriguing cost vs. performance value, it is important to evaluate space vehicle and payload interactions in order to understand their impact on overall on-orbit mission performance. Many space vehicle and payload desires are in direct conflict and require careful allocation, requirement management and performance evaluation to ensure the SmallSat offering lives up to its mission goals. Lessons learned from large satellite design can be directly applied to SmallSats, while allowing flexibility to meet the …
School Choice Considerations Of Black Parents Of Students With Dis/Abilities, Jaleah Robinson
School Choice Considerations Of Black Parents Of Students With Dis/Abilities, Jaleah Robinson
Electronic Theses and Dissertations
Forty-four states and Washington, D.C. have passed legislation to expand school choice options for students and families (Cardine, 2019). In addition to a student’s assigned neighborhood school, one may enact choice by way of tax credits, charter schools, vouchers, relocation, and through other means, depending on where one lives. The act of choosing a school has been simplified by some to economic principles of competition and consumer satisfaction. What research has shown, however, is enacting school choice is much more complex and commonly intertwined with concepts of race, class, and ability (Ellison & Aloe, 2019). Academic quality (Mavrogordato & Stein, …

Development Of A Microfluidic Viscoelastic Hemostatic Assay For Real-Timeviscosity Measurements Of Blood, Shay Kent
Electronic Theses and Dissertations
Blood coagulation disorders are malfunctions in the body’s ability to control blood clotting. It can result in either insufficient clotting causing an increased risk of bleeding or excessive clotting obstructing blood flow. The rapid and accurate diagnosis of coagulopathies is an important, unmet need in the clinical setting. Rapidly identifying the source of bleeding, either acquired or inherited, is critical to reduce the risk of major blood loss and deliver personalized hemostatic therapies. Viscoelastic hemostatic assays, or VHAs, deliver an effective solution to the diagnosis of coagulopathies by evaluating global hemostatic function using whole blood rather than plasma. VHAs are …
Development Of A Combined Feedforward-Feedback Quality Control System For Extended-Release Granules Using A Quality By Design Approach, Yuxiang Zhao
Electronic Theses and Dissertations
Objectives
For a fluid bed film coating process to consistently deliver quality products, its control system needs to be robust against the variability of input materials and environmental disturbances. Presently, limited studies have been reported to understand the effects and interactions of the material attributes, environmental variables, and process parameters on the product in vitro drug dissolution. A control system can be developed with a proper understanding of the coating process, by adjusting the process parameters in feedback and feedforward manners to compensate for the undesired effect caused by disturbances, and ensure consistent product quality.
Methods
The control system was …

Underactuated Attitude Control With Deep Reinforcement Learning, Matteo El Hariry, Andrea Cini, Alessandro Balossino
Small Satellite Conference
Autonomy is a key challenge for future space exploration endeavors. Deep Reinforcement Learning holds the promises for developing agents able to learn complex behaviors simply by interacting with their environment. This work investigates the use of Reinforcement Learning for satellite attitude control applied to two working conditions: the nominal case, in which all the actuators (a set of 3 reaction wheels) are working properly, and the underactuated case, where an actuator failure is simulated randomly along one of the axes. In particular, a control policy is implemented and evaluated to maneuver a small satellite from a random starting angle to …

Small Satellite Conference
This poster presents an update on the development of the Optical Periscopic Imager for Comets (OPIC) instrument [1], which will be hosted on one of three spacecraft making up the Comet Interceptor ESA-JAXA mission [2]. OPIC is a compact ( < 0.5 kg) monochromic camera for taking images of the nucleus and coma of either a long-period or dynamically new comet, or an interstellar object for mapping, reconstruction and localisation purposes. The camera will operate in a harsh environment with continuous dust impacts throughout its multi-day operation; therefore, the instrument is equipped with a periscope, which protects optics from high-velocity impacts. The probe is spin-stabilised at 4-15 RPM and will be parked in Lagrange point L2 (launched with ARIEL telescope) and depart at a suitable time to intercept a target at velocity 10-70 km/s. The closest approach is approximately 400 km.

The nascent field of fractionated satellite architectures provides an opportunity to improve spacecraft modularity and afford greater flexibility, adaptability, and upgradeability to spacecraft constellations. Satellite modules within a coherent formation can be replaced without facing the challenges of manufacturing, assembly, or disassembly in the harsh space environment (e.g., satellite modules conducting electromagnetic formation flight (EMFF) are not physically connected such that one module may be replaced with potentially less risk of damaging or degrading the performance of the other modules). Conventionally, the depot for constellation replenishment is located on Earth, however, minor augmentations to spacecraft formations cannot be conducted economically …

Satellite Reliability Model Supporting End-Of-Life Operations Success, Anton Roig, Christophe Etcheverry, Karine Etienne
Small Satellite Conference
The increasing number of satellites in orbit and the upcoming deployment of constellations of hundreds of small satellites raises the problem of orbital debris and saturation of main LEO and GEO orbits. Currently, about sixty percent of satellites are deorbited at their end of life, including thirty percent deliberately with a propulsion system. The increase in the number of debris has led to the implementation of preventive and corrective actions at an international level to ensure the availability and safety of these orbits for future space projects. It therefore appears necessary to guarantee with the best estimate possible the operations …

Developers of small satellites face the challenges of a short development schedule, incomplete information about parts from vendors, and limited budgets. The situation is complicated by the need to use commercial electronic parts rather than radiation hardened parts to meet performance and budget constraints. Fortunately, a number of organizations are standing up new modeling and data resources that are available for free online. Motivation for sharing models, part data, and lessons learned include shorter development times, increased mission success likelihood, and training the next generation of space professionals. The purpose of this paper is to make these resources and their …
