Infrastructure Deficiency Correlation With Pedestrian/Cyclist Crashes: A Data-Driven Approach, Farbod Tavakkoli Khomeini, Barbara Minsker, Michael Hahler, Janille Smith-Colin, Xinlei Wang Aug 2021

Infrastructure Deficiency Correlation With Pedestrian/Cyclist Crashes: A Data-Driven Approach, Farbod Tavakkoli Khomeini, Barbara Minsker, Michael Hahler, Janille Smith-Colin, Xinlei Wang

Civil and Environmental Engineering Theses and Dissertations

A model for identifying the impacts of infrastructure deficiency on road traffic safety is needed to help governments prioritize strategic investments to increase public safety. During the 2010-2019 period, U.S. pedestrian and cyclist fatalities rose by 44% and 36%, respectively, and previous studies have shown a positive correlation between pedestrian/cyclist crashes and low-income areas. To our knowledge, this study is the first to investigate further the reasons behind the higher probability of pedestrian and cyclist crashes in low-income areas. The proposed hypothesis is that the higher probability of pedestrian and cyclist crashes in low-income areas correlates with higher infrastructure deficiencies …

A Restrained Beam Sub-Model Assembly (Rbsa) For Progressive Collapse Analysis, Muath Alhumaidi Aug 2021

A Restrained Beam Sub-Model Assembly (Rbsa) For Progressive Collapse Analysis, Muath Alhumaidi

Civil and Environmental Engineering Theses and Dissertations

The progressive collapse failure mode occurs in buildings when a load-carrying element is lost due to extreme events such as explosions caused by terrorist attacks or vehicular impacts. Guidelines and many researches efforts have been established in order to limit and prevent total collapse of buildings after losing a load-carrying component (e.g., a column). Two famous examples of progressive collapse are the 1968 Ronan Point apartment building kitchen explosion on the 18th floor and the 1995 Alfred P. Murrah Federal Building bombing in Oklahoma City. Both examples resulted in fatalities and injuries. A small number of these …

Geometrically Complex Planar Heat Exchangers, Derli Dias Do Amaral Junior, Jose Lage Aug 2021

Geometrically Complex Planar Heat Exchangers, Derli Dias Do Amaral Junior, Jose Lage

Mechanical Engineering Research Theses and Dissertations

In this study, geometrically complex planar heat exchangers, designed in line with the Constructal Law and operating at steady-state, are investigated numerically. The work is divided into two parts, one focusing on diffusion heat transfer in a rectangular plane and another on conjugate diffusion-convection heat transfer in a circular plane heat exchanger.

In the first part, a heat generating rectangular solid volume made of a low conductivity material is cooled through a small, isothermal side-section of the domain. The diffusion cooling process is improved by distributing within the heat generating material a fixed amount of a high conductivity material. The …

Havana Impressions: Print Culture And Global Modernity In Plantation Cuba (1790-1860), Asiel Sepulveda Aug 2021

Havana Impressions: Print Culture And Global Modernity In Plantation Cuba (1790-1860), Asiel Sepulveda

Art History Theses and Dissertations

This dissertation examines the imagined worlds of the Cuban plantation system. It tells a story of print culture in a slave society. The story is based in the city of Havana, capital of Cuba, the great fortified port of the Spanish Empire, and seat of one of the largest plantation economies in the Atlantic World. The dissertation is primary concerned with what I call “Havana Impressions,” printed and mental images of the city that impressed a sense of modernity upon the viewer. These images, I argue, lay bare the struggle to define urban modernity under the cultural regimes of Spanish …

Modified Degradation Process Models And Statistical Methods For Assessing Robustness And Reliability Of Complex Networks, Yuzhou Chen Aug 2021

Modified Degradation Process Models And Statistical Methods For Assessing Robustness And Reliability Of Complex Networks, Yuzhou Chen

Statistical Science Theses and Dissertations

In this thesis, we develop a novel stochastic modeling approach based on multiple interdependent topological measures of complex networks. The key engine behind our approach is to evaluate the dynamics of multiple network motifs as descriptors of the underlying network topology. Under a framework of the gamma degradation model, we develop a formal statistical framework for the analysis of reliability and robustness of a single complex network as well as for assessing differences in reliability properties exhibited by two different networks. We validate the proposed methodology with Monte Carlo simulation studies and illustrate the utility of the proposed approach by …

Estimation Of Parameters Of Gamma And Generalized Gamma Distributions Based On Censored Experimental Data, Xiangwen Shang Aug 2021

Estimation Of Parameters Of Gamma And Generalized Gamma Distributions Based On Censored Experimental Data, Xiangwen Shang

Statistical Science Theses and Dissertations

In time-to-event data analysis, censoring is one of the unique features that restricts our ability to observe the time-to-events and poses difficulties for statistical analysis. Censoring occurs when the exact time-to-event cannot be observed for some or all observations. In this thesis, we study the parameter estimation methods for a two-parameter gamma distribution and a three-parameter generalized gamma distribution based on different kinds of censored data arising from life-testing experiments.

We first study the parameter estimation of a three-parameter generalized gamma distribution based on left-truncated and right-censored data. It is well known that the maximum likelihood estimates of the parameters …

Quantifying Hydrologic Pathway And Source Connectivity Dynamics In Tile Drainage: Implications For Phosphorus Concentrations, Saeid Nazari, William I. Ford, Kevin W. King

Biosystems and Agricultural Engineering Faculty Publications

Flowpathways and source water connectivity dynamics are widely recognized to affect tile-drainage water quality. In this study, we developed and evaluated a framework that couples event-based hydrograph recession and specific conductance end-member mixing analysis (SC-EMMA) to provide a more robust framework for quantifying both flow pathway dynamics and source connectivity of drainage water in tile-drained landscapes. High-frequency (30-min) flow and conductivity data were collected from an edge-of-field tile main located in northwestern Ohio, and the newly developed framework was applied for data collected in water year 2019. Multiple linear regression (MLR) analysis was used to evaluate the impact of pathway-connectivity …

Hepatic Cell Mobilization For Protection Against Ischemic Myocardial Injury, Shu Q. Liu, John B. Troy, Chi Hao Luan, Roger J. Guillory Ii Aug 2021

Hepatic Cell Mobilization For Protection Against Ischemic Myocardial Injury, Shu Q. Liu, John B. Troy, Chi Hao Luan, Roger J. Guillory Ii

Michigan Tech Publications, Part 1

The heart is capable of activating protective mechanisms in response to ischemic injury to support myocardial survival and performance. These mechanisms have been recognized primarily in the ischemic heart, involving paracrine signaling processes. Here, we report a distant cardioprotective mechanism involving hepatic cell mobilization to the ischemic myocardium in response to experimental myocardial ischemia–reperfusion (MI-R) injury. A parabiotic mouse model was generated by surgical skin-union of two mice and used to induce bilateral MI-R injury with unilateral hepatectomy, establishing concurrent gain- and loss-of-hepatic cell mobilization conditions. Hepatic cells, identified based on the cell-specific expression of enhanced YFP, were found in …

Methane Emissions From Stormwater Ponds, Brianna Pollard Aug 2021

Methane Emissions From Stormwater Ponds, Brianna Pollard

Theses

Methane (CH4) is a powerful greenhouse gas that has a global warming potential 28 times larger than carbon dioxide (CO2) on a 100-year horizon. Methane emissions from inland freshwater sources are not as well understood as those from other sources; however, current estimates suggest that they account for a significant portion of global CH4 emissions. Emissions from inland waters are difficult to measure due to their high spatiotemporal variability, leading to high levels of uncertainty and a need for more CH4 flux data from these freshwater systems. Increased runoff associated with urbanization has led to construction of man-made inland waters …

Classification Of Explainable Artificial Intelligence Methods Through Their Output Formats, Giulia Vilone, Luca Longo Aug 2021

Classification Of Explainable Artificial Intelligence Methods Through Their Output Formats, Giulia Vilone, Luca Longo

Articles

Machine and deep learning have proven their utility to generate data-driven models with high accuracy and precision. However, their non-linear, complex structures are often difficult to interpret. Consequently, many scholars have developed a plethora of methods to explain their functioning and the logic of their inferences. This systematic review aimed to organise these methods into a hierarchical classification system that builds upon and extends existing taxonomies by adding a significant dimension—the output formats. The reviewed scientific papers were retrieved by conducting an initial search on Google Scholar with the keywords “explainable artificial intelligence”; “explainable machine learning”; and “interpretable machine learning”. …

Scale-Dependence Of Hematite Nanoparticle Sulfidation, Uma Lad

Earth Sciences Theses and Dissertations

Iron (oxyhydr)oxides are widespread in the environment and have a disproportionate effect on the fate of metal(loid)s in groundwater. Numerous studies demonstrate the effect of iron-sulfur dynamics on contaminant sequestration, and particle size further impacts the reactivity of iron (oxyhydr)oxides, including their capacity for sorption and precipitation. This study examines the role of particle size on the sulfidation of iron (oxyhydr)oxides. Synthetic hematite nanoparticles with approximate diameters of 7.1 nm and 104 nm were coated onto quartz sand and reacted with bisulfide by advective flow.

Characterization of these nanoparticles revealed hydroxyls present at the hematite surface, with large particles having …

Reducing Power During Manufacturing Test Using Different Architectures, Yi Sun Aug 2021

Reducing Power During Manufacturing Test Using Different Architectures, Yi Sun

Computer Science and Engineering Theses and Dissertations

Power during manufacturing test can be several times higher than power consumption in functional mode. Excessive power during test can cause IR drop, over-heating, and early aging of the chips. In this dissertation, three different architectures have been introduced to reduce test power in general cases as well as in certain scenarios, including field test.

In the first architecture, scan chains are divided into several segments. Every segment needs a control bit to enable capture in a segment when new faults are detectable on that segment for that pattern. Otherwise, the segment should be disabled to reduce capture power. We …

A Call For A Better Understanding Of Aquatic Chytrid Biology, Davis Laundon, Michael Cunliffe Aug 2021

A Call For A Better Understanding Of Aquatic Chytrid Biology, Davis Laundon, Michael Cunliffe

School of Biological and Marine Sciences

The phylum Chytridiomycota (the “chytrids”) is an early-diverging, mostly unicellular, lineage of fungi that consists of significant aquatic saprotrophs, parasites, and pathogens, and is of evolutionary interest because its members retain biological traits considered ancestral in the fungal kingdom. While the existence of aquatic chytrids has long been known, their fundamental biology has received relatively little attention. We are beginning to establish a detailed understanding of aquatic chytrid diversity and insights into their ecological functions and prominence. However, the underpinning biology governing their aquatic ecological activities and associated core processes remain largely understudied and therefore unresolved. Many biological questions are …

A Fast Method For Computing Volume Potentials In The Galerkin Boundary Element Method In 3d Geometries, Sasan Mohyaddin Aug 2021

A Fast Method For Computing Volume Potentials In The Galerkin Boundary Element Method In 3d Geometries, Sasan Mohyaddin

Mathematics Theses and Dissertations

We discuss how the Fast Multipole Method (FMM) applied to a boundary concentrated mesh can be used to evaluate volume potentials that arise in the boundary element method. If $h$ is the meshwidth near the boundary, then the algorithm can compute the potential in nearly $\Ord(h^{-2})$ operations while maintaining an $\Ord(h^p)$ convergence of the error. The effectiveness of the algorithms are demonstrated by solving boundary integral equations of the Poisson equation.

Statistical Mechanics Of Nonlinear Waves: Growth And Decay Of Coherent Structures Interacting With Random Waves, Yuanting Chen Aug 2021

Statistical Mechanics Of Nonlinear Waves: Growth And Decay Of Coherent Structures Interacting With Random Waves, Yuanting Chen

Mathematics Theses and Dissertations

High-amplitude coherent structures have been observed in many nonlinear wave systems, ranging from fluids, plasmas to optical waves. In this dissertation, we explore the interaction of Rayleigh-Jeans distributed low-amplitude random waves with coherent solitary structures in a nonintegrable and non-collapsing version of the nonlinear Schr\"odinger equation. We try to understand if such an interaction enhances or erodes the coherent structures with the method of statistical mechanics. We find the threshold of the growth and decay of the coherent structure by equating the phase frequency of the coherent structure to the chemical potential of low-amplitude weakly nonlinear random waves. If the …

The rapid development of Yogyakarta has made city development increase. This construction continues to expand the reach of impervious surfaces. As a result, surface runoff and maximum discharge have increased, overflowing up to urban drainage. This study aimed to analyze the maximum discharge of the watershed based on design storms with 2, 5, 10, and 25-year return periods, used for flood control considerations. The urban flood was modelled using HEC-HMS. The results showed that the contribution of discharge flow in each segment is influenced by the dominance of land use, in which the segment dominated by dense settlements has a …

Compassion Satisfaction, Burnout, And Intent To Stay Among Nurse Leaders, Lisa D. Surby Aug 2021

Compassion Satisfaction, Burnout, And Intent To Stay Among Nurse Leaders, Lisa D. Surby

Dissertations

Nurses in leadership roles have a substantial influence on the quality of the work environment and on safety, quality, and patient outcomes. However, compassion satisfaction (CS) and burnout (BO) have historically been understudied, and evidence is lacking regarding the existence of a relationship between CS, BO, and intent to stay among nurse leaders. The purpose of this cross-sectional descriptive study, guided by Stamm's theory of CS and compassion fatigue (CF), was to determine if there was a relationship between CS and BO and intent to stay among nurse leaders. An anonymous online survey was conducted using the Professional Quality of …

Semantic Matching Evaluation: Optimizing Models For Agreement Between Humans And Autotutor, Colin Mackenzie Carmon

Electronic Theses and Dissertations Archive

The goal of this thesis is to evaluate the answers that students give to questions asked by an intelligent tutoring system (ITS) on electronics, called ElectronixTutor. One learning resource of ElectronixTutor is AutoTutor, an instructional module that helps students learn by holding a conversation in natural language. The semantic relatedness between a student’s verbal input and an ideal answer is a salient feature for assessing performance of the student in AutoTutor. Inaccurate assessment of the verbal contributions will create problems in AutoTutor’s adaptation to the student. Therefore, this thesis evaluated the quality of semantic matches between student input and the …

Evaluating Mine Design Alternatives For Social Risks Using Discrete Choice Analysis, Kwame Awuah-Offei, Sisi Que, Atta Ur Rehman Aug 2021

Evaluating Mine Design Alternatives For Social Risks Using Discrete Choice Analysis, Kwame Awuah-Offei, Sisi Que, Atta Ur Rehman

Mining Engineering Faculty Research & Creative Works

As with other engineering design tasks, mine design involves setting design objectives and constraints (the feasible solution space) and finding the optimal design alternative. Mine engineers often struggle to incorporate the preferences of local community members into their evaluation of mine design alternatives because the mining literature lacks tools to quantify such risks during mine planning. This paper presents an approach to evaluate community acceptance (i.e., community preferences for the alternatives) using discrete choice models and decision-based design during mine planning. Using discrete choice models and a rigorous framework, engineers can estimate the cost of social risks as a function …
